Earlham, IowaBetty Jane Shepherd, 87, of rural Stuart passed away at her home on Saturday, February 16. Visitation will be held on Friday, Feb. 22 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at the Johnson Family Funeral Home in Stuart. Memorial service will be on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 1:30 pm at the Stuart Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church in Stuart. Private family burial will be held at the Jefferson Center Cemetery in rural Stuart. Memorial contributions may be made to the Stuart Rescue Unit, in care of Johnson Family Funeral Home, Stuart, Iowa.
Betty was born on December 23, 1925 to C. Everett and Esther Mae (Fritz) Varley in rural Adair County. She attended rural grade school followed by Menlo High School, graduating with the class of 1944. On December 25, 1945 she was united in marriage to George W. Shepherd at the Jefferson Center Church. This union brought them three children: Nancy, Everett and Judy. The family moved to the farmstead in 1953, where Betty continued to live throughout her life.
Betty was an active member of the Jefferson Center Church. She was an artist for more than 30 years selling both originals and prints. Betty enjoyed entertaining the family and guests on Sunday afternoons. She enjoyed baking pies and cookies, gardening and tending to her flowers.
She was preceded in death by her parents; loving husband, George; and daughter Nancy Allen.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory her children: Everett (Julie) Shepherd of Stuart and Judy (Rich) Roger of Indianola; son-in-law Art Allen of Stuart; siblings Beulah Nevitt of Stuart, Glenna (Kenneth) McAtee of Kimberly City, MO, Charles (Ilah) Varley of Stuart; sister-in-law Mildred Kness of Des Moines; 7 grandchildren Benjamin Carter-Allen, Nathan Allen, Sara Shepherd, Greg Shepherd, Tony Rogers, Timothy Rogers, Sean Rogers; 6 great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and friends that will miss her greatly.
