Jabez Bower
Native of Wilsthire, Eng., And Pioneer of This Section Is Laid To Rest
Jabez Bower was born in Wiltshire England, on August 2, 1845. He departed this life April 6, 1920, attaining the age of 74 years, 8 months and 4 days.
In infancy the deceased was christened in the church of England. At the tender age of two years he was taken by his mother from England to Canada where they resided a short while before coming to the States.
Mr. Bower was united in marriage to Mary E. Springer on March 11, 1869, locating on a farm two miles south of Watkins where he resided until the year 1914, when he moved to Blairstown.
Mr. Bower leaves to mourn his loss a wife and six children: Mrs. Hettie Sieke, Mrs. Jane King, of Malcom, Will Bower, of Mount Auburn, Mrs. Alice Newton, of Vinton, Mrs. Emma McDonald, of Watkins and Miss Belle Bower, of Blairstown. One daughter Anna died at the age of three years. There are also fifteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, and one brother, William, of Washta, Ia.
The departed was a man who was a student of affairs and kept in close touch with the best interests of the community and state in which he lived. A kind and loving husband and father, a good neighbor, a most excellent citizen possessing a pleasing personality beloved by all who knew him.
He leaves his children the heritage of an honest name and to his friends the memory of a big hearted hospitality and true man.
The funeral which was conducted by Rev. C. S. Burnard of the Methodist church occurred on Thursday, April 8, at 1 p. m. Brief services were held at the house followed by a sermon at the Presbyterian church in Watkins. Interment was made at Mound cemetery, Watkins.
