Bechtel, Susan C.
(1835 Jun 12-1864 Feb 16)
This is Susan C. (Bechtol) O'Neil, w/o
Charles O'Neil. (R.O.)
Becking, Mae Cassidy (1899 Aug 08-1935
May 16)
Mae L. (Cassidy) Becking is buried in Gethsemane,
not Lycurgus. Lycurgus Church records show funeral
services there, but burial in Gethsemane. I believe she
was wife #2 of William Becking. (R.O.)
Blanchard, James (1833 Apr 22
1904 May 22)
-I believe this is actually James Sweeny
(1833 Apr 15 - 1904 May 22). He was Married to Anne
(O'Donnell) Sweeny d. 1911. Source: Allamakee Journal
obit. (R.O.)
Carwinske, Mary E. (1887 Feb
15-1959 May 01)
Sweeney, Mary McCroden (1887-1959
May 01)
These entries are for the same woman: Mary
(McCroden) Sweeney Carwinske. She died at
Charles City, Iowa & there was an obit in the Waukon
Democrat for her. Mary McCroden married twice, first
to Peter Sweeney, second to Paul Cerwinski (d. 1967,
buried Calvery Cemetery, Alta Vista, Chickasaw County,
IA). She is buried with Peter. (R.O.)
Connor, Albert C. (1906 Oct 30-1932 Jul
30)
Correct surname is Collins. The dates
are correct. He also has another entry as Albert Collins
in Woodmansee. Death Certificate gives cause of death as
skull & femur fractures from being hit by a truck;
s/o William K. & Mary (Plein) Collins. (R.O.)
Connor, Lucille Bridget (1908 Jun
07-1973 Feb 05)
Connor, Mary Plein (1868-1955 Oct 19)
Connor, William K. (1866 Jun 13-1933 Aug
26)
Correct surname for all is Collins. Mary
Plein was w/o William K. Collins. (R.O.)
Condon, Mary Ann (1852-1912 May
22)
-Allamakee Death Records have an entry for Mary Ann Casy
(d. 1912, buried Lycurgus), and there is an obit for Mary
Ann Casey in the Allamakee Journal. Mary Ann
Condon and Mary Ann Casey are the same person. According
to census records, she was the niece of Bridget Casey and
lived with Bridget from childhood. In 1860 census
she was enumerated with the surname Casey. By 1885
she is going by the name of Condon, but marital status is
single. In 1900 she is still Mary Ann Condon,
single. Its possible that she did marry
as a young woman, but her birth name likely was always
Condon. (R.O. & S.F.)
Connors, ? ;(Mrs. John); 1877 Jan 06 -
1919 May 24
-I've found out that Anna M. Whalen, daughter of
Thomas Whalen and Elizabeth Shortt Whalen, was the second
wife of a John H. Connor. The 1925 census indicates
that his first wife was Esther Ward (her daughter is in
John's household and Esther is named as her mother)
But I couldn't find her in Woodmansee's entries for St.
Mary Cemetery, Lycurgus. But there is a Connor
whose name is unknown and it notes that she is "Mrs.
John". That could possibly be Esther
Ward Connor. (M.W.)
Deeney, Ellen (1852 Oct 02-1929 May 21)
Correct dates for Ellen (Coyle) Deeney are 10/2/1852 -
5/21/1925. (R.O.)
Deeny, Mary (1885 Dec 01-1886 Nov 17)
Correct dates per her gravestone: Nov. 30, 1865
- Nov. 17, 1866. (R.O.)

Rose in 'Woodmansee'. Name on gravestone is Roseanne

Fenelon, John
Fenelon, Mary nee Brennan
-John Fenelon & his wife Mary Brennan Fenelon are
buried in St. Mary's Lycurgus, but neither name appears
in Woodmansee. Their gravestones are still
readable and the church shows no records of them. Mary's
obit has been posted on the Allamakee co. Obituary Board.
Their headstones read:

died 10/18/1867, aged 31y. Margaret Catherine (Thurow)
was Jacob's 2nd wife. She died in LaCrosse, WI.
Floyer, John (1830 1917 Mar 21)
-Surname is Floegel, not Floyer. John is
mentioned in the Postville newspaper as far back as 1876
when he was in the meat business as Wagner &
Floegel. A search of the archived Postville paper
returns a half dozen blurbs, all spelling the surname as
Floegel. Census records spell his surname with various
similar spellings. He died at the Allamakee County Home.
(R.O. & S.F.)
Frank, ? (died 1876)
Frank, Katherine (1833 Dec 03-1905 Jun 17)

Lansing Ridge cemetery. (R.O.)
Gilson, Evirt C. (1904 Jul 07-1904 Dec
23)
Death Certificate (familysearch) indicates this is Evert
Charles Gilson 7/7/1904-12/25/1904, who is
buried in the Cleveland cemetery, likely
without a gravestone (R.O.)
Haas, Catherine Schreiber (1871 Jul
02-1965 Jun 16)
Haas, Ferdinand (1871 Jul 02-1965 Jun
16)
Ferdinand & Catherine (Schrieber) Haas. Ferdinand's

Hammond, Sarah (1798-1875 Sep 22)
Not buried in Lycurgus, is buried in Mt. Hope cemetery.
Woodmasee also has a correct entry for her in Mt. Hope.
(R.O.)
Harkins, Bridget (1827-16
Nov 1882)
-Bridget Harkins is in the 1880 census with John Harkins
and her two stepsons James and Barney, brothers, I
assume, to the Neil mentioned in the obituary. She is
listed as being 82 years old. Her obituary is dated a few days after the
funeral, so would appear that the date of death was
November 10, which is the Friday before the obit was
written. Her date of birth would be closer to 1797
than 1827. (M.W.)
Harkins, John (1855-1882 Jun 22)
Woodmansee indicates no gravestone, but he does have one.
His father, also John Harkins (died 5/17/1887) is not
listed in Woodmansee but also has a stone. (R.O.)
Hawthorne, Mary Helen Brophy (1860 Apr
14-1922 Apr 27)
-Mary Elen Hawthorne is buried in St. Mary's Catholic
cemetery, McGregor, Clayton co. IA. Death cert. gives
name of husband, John C. Hawthorne & parents as John
& Esther (Blau) Motherall. Unknown why 'Brophy' is
included with her Woodmansee entry. (R.O.)
Henry, Leo E. (1901 Jul 08-1963 Apr 18)
-DOD in Woodmansee is incorrect. His gravestone is
inscribed 1901-1984. Researchers should
confirm month & day of death. (R.O.).
Hert, Peter (1804 Oct 20-1868 Jan 05)
The entry for Peter is correct, but he shares a
gravestone with Elizabeth Hert, 2/5/1805
- 4/6/1862. She is not listed in Woodmansee. (R.O.)
Hird, Henry (no dates)
Hirth, ? (1829-1893 Nov 18)
Hirth, Henry (1829-1893 Nov 18)
Allamakee Death Records, pg 74, for Henry Hirt
give DOD 11/18/1893 and burial in Lycurgus; gravestone
gives age 65y 2m 9d, but spells surname as Hird.
He had an obit in the Allamakee Journal where
his surname was spelled Hirt. The other
entry for ? Hirth could be for Henry's wife Louise,
giving his dates in error. Confirmation of her name &
dates is needed. (R.O.)
Hoffman, Mathias (1808 May 21-1881 Mar
14)
Hoffman, Mathias (1810-1893 Mar 14)
Both entries are same man. Gravestone for Mathias Hoffman

in Lansing Ridge cemetery. 'Woodmansee'
also correctly lists her in that cemetery, same dates.

Lowe, William J. (1880 Dec 23-1881 Jul
24)

See below for Catherine Purcell
Maher, Patrick (1815-1891 Sep 23)
Gravestone = died Feb 28, 1894, aged 76
yrs. The YOB is not on the gravestone. (R.O.)
Mahoney, Augusta (1838 Nov 14 1918 Aug
09)
Augusta (Kinney) Mahoney's date of death was 1915
Aug 09. Gravestone DOD appears to be 1918. ACDR, Lycurgus
Church records, Death cert. & obits in several 1915
newspapers all give year of death as 1915. (R.O.)
Meyers, Ann (1857-10/25/1925)
ACDR give burial place as Lycurgus cemetery. 'Woodmansee'
lists her in both Lycurgus and Mays Prairie cemeteries.
The notation for Mays Prairie indicates there is a Martin
Funeral Home record and the notation for Lycurgus
indicates 'no grave marker'. I have not found a obit,
cemetery record or church record for her. Additional
information is needed to verify place of burial. (R.O.)
O'Donnell, Anthony (1857-1881 Feb
06)
Shares a gravestone w/Susan. His DOB is not on the stone,
it gives his age as 75 yrs., making DOB c1806
rather than 1857. (S.F.)
O'Donnell, J. (1875-1886 May 18)
O'Donnell, John J. (1885 Jun 28-1896 May
18)
These entries are for the same child. Gravestone for John
J. O'Donnell = died 5/18/1886, aged 10y
10m 20d; there is no DOB on the stone. (R.O.)
O'Donnell, Virginia Jean (1929 Apr
22-1929 May 19)

Chicago; Illinois death record (Ancestry.com) = Daughter
of William J. & Jeanette (Murry) White. She has a
gravestone with the dates shown in 'Woodmansee'. (R.O.

Records & an obit in the Allamakee Journal
give her DOD as 12/10/1908, age 77 yrs. There may not be
a gravestone for them. (R.O.)
Regan, Leo P. (1883 Sep 19-1938 Jan 20)

11/27/1888 - 04/11/1921;

Rose, Anne (1851 Aug 15-1936 Sep 22)

Sweeney, Mary (d. 1955 Nov 11)
Sweeney, Rose Marie (1966 Apr 06-1966
Apr 06)
The 3 infants of Raymond & Monica (Burke) Sweeney
were originally buried in Lycurgus. When their mother
died in 1990 they were reburied in the same lot as their
parents in Mt. Olivet cemetery. Raymond
(1922-1990) & Monica (1922 Jan 02-1990 Jul 23). At
the time of Monica's burial, Eileen Woodmansee was
informed of the reinterments and later passed this info
to me; the parent's gravestone also includes the children's
names. (R.O.)
Troendle, Bernice Ryan (1895-1969 Dec
14)
Troendle, Gertrude A. Haas (1895 Jul 27
-1969 Dec 14)
I believe both are Gertrude Elizabeth (Haas) Troendle,
married to Benedict Troendle (his gravestone = Ben. W.
Troendle) (R.O.)
Troendle, Mary (1931 May 15-1931 May 16)
She is buried in Gethsemane cemetery,
not St. Mary's Lycurgus. Gravestone = Daughter of Mr.
& Mrs. Silas Troendle, died May 15, 1934. (R.O.)
Waters, Michael (1828 Mar -- 1891 Oct
01)
Waters, Michael (died 1894 Oct 02)
-these should be one entry in Woodmansee;
obituary in the Waukon Standard, 10/10/1894
"died last week". Gravestone has DOD =
10/01/1894 and DOB = March 1828. (R.O.)
Whalen, John - NM Lot 33
-John
Whalen with no marker in Lot 33 at Lycurgus has a
strong possibility of being the son of Thomas
Whalen (brother to my great-grandfather Patrick
Whalen) and Elizabeth Shortt Whalen. According to
the 1880 US Census he was born in 1872 but in the
Iowa State census years 1885 & 1895 his age
indicates that he was born in 1874/5. His Funeral
Mass card (right) gives birth date of March 14,
1879, which is likely not the correct year. A few
of Thomas and Eliza Shortt Whalen's sons went
west to Idaho. I had assumed John may be one of
them. I know they traveled back to Iowa to visit
family, especially the unmarried brothers.
Although John's funeral card doesn't specifically
give burial place, it would appear he was buried
in Allamakee County, because the Mortuary was
Bakke and Toner, which was in Waukon in the
1940s. John's parents and siblings are buried in
Lycurgus (as were his Whalen and Shortt ancestors
and cousins), so Lycurgus cemetery is the most
likely cemetery. The only other John Whalen
listed in Woodmansee is John Henry
Whalen buried at Wexford, a member of an
unrelated family. If there is a record of the
sale of Lycurgus Lot 33, that may be helpful.
(M.W.)
Added 2/27/2022 by D.D.: "I have the obit
for John P Whalen, who is buried in Lycurgus.
Mathew Whalen was unsure of his place of
burial."
