The Bee reported that snow fell in Ossian on August 18, 1924. Was this an all-time record?

The town held a "tu-day" celebration in August. A bowery, 65' X 160', was erected on Lydia street; four free acts were engaged to furnish entertainment; and a merry-go-round was booked for the kiddies' enjoyment.

The grand opening of the Korbel cafe in the Figge building was declared a great success when over two hundred supper guests were served.

The contents of a storage tank at the Heinmiller garage were vandalized by the addition of buttermilk to the gasoline.

Calmar high school was awarded possession of the silver cup in this year's declamatory competition. Ossian's entries scored high with Ruth Birdsell and Delbert Witt winning firsts in humorous and oratorical, but Ruth Bills of Calmar was declared the overall winner for her dramatic presentation.

The results of the municipal election were; A. C. Heck, mayor; Henry Huinker, Henry Johnson, Gus Bakken, W. E. Cornell and John Collins--councilmen; A. S. Andre-sen, treasurer; and John Moe, assessor. Mr. Bakken failed to qualify for office and Charles Ginapp was named to fill his seat. Rolf Kvamme was appointed clerk by the council. Mayor Heck chose John Swehla for marshal and street commissioner and former marshal Grimstad was appointed waterworks superintendent and sewer inspector—a newly created office.

THE SANITARY SEWER

Ordinance no. 89 calling for the establishment of a sanitary sewer system in the corporation, was adopted at a special meeting of the city fathers in 1923-

A petition of remonstrance signed by 140 taxpayers was presented to the council at an objectors meeting held on March 22. However, the project was deemed necessary and a resolution ordering construction was passed. Contractors were invited to submit bids for the construction of a sanitary sewer.

There were representatives of 40 contractors present at the bid letting. Twenty two offers were filed with city clerk Green. Ole Johnson was successful in obtaining the contract for laying the sewer lines. H. O. Graham was low bidder on the constructing of the four disposal plants. Total costs were listed as $37,328.

If my recollection is correct, the Johnson excavating machine had a large wheel covered with an endless chain of shovel buckets. It dug a narrow trench, just wide enough to accommodate the sewer tile. The machine worked very well in unobstructed soil, but they ran into difficulty on Main street in front of the opera house.

An old stone culvert, laid by Gunder Gunderson in the 1870s, stopped the machine. Oldtimers recalled that considerable water flowed across Main street at this point, and also near the Mary street intersection, in the early years. Stonemason Gunderson was hired to solve the problem. The culverts are presently at least 8 feet below the pavement. The diggers also uncovered several earthen jugs stamped Kruger Bros, near the site of their pop factory on West street.

M. J. Carter became the first resident to connect to the new lines in June.

A resolution accepting the project was passed in October and ordinance no. 90 governing operation of the new system was adopted.

The total indebtedness of the town increased to $42,465 as a result of the newly issued sewer bonds and vouchers.

Marcella Brown of the Ossian public school won first place in the county spelling contest and went on to represent Winneshiek at the Iowa state fair.

The members of the teaching staff at the public school this fall were; J. A. Lien, superintendent; Homer Fossler, principal; Mrs. Ruth Grace; and the Misses
