His achievement was covered by pictures and text in the Des Moines Sunday Register. Three other Winneshiek county boys had litters over a ton at 6 months of age. They included two Ossian area boys: Leonard Bodensteiner and Raymond Daniels. A fall festival and bazzar sponsored by the ladies of St. Francis parish was held at the opera house. The celebration raised $1465 for the Catholic Church. A historical incident connected with early movies took place near Castalia about this time. We included it in the history published by the Bloomfield Twp. Historical Society. Since this fascinating tale involves Ossian residents, it belongs here as well. "WATCH OUT FOR PAPA"Among the more interesting events during the early days of motion pictures was the filming of the comedy, "Watch out for Papa". This film was produced by the Laughagraph Film Company of Castalia. This company's personnel included Lysle Tatro, actor; Dewey Tatro, cameraman; and V. G. Bollman, director. The set for the movie was the Charles Tatro farm near Castalia and adjacent roads and fields. The main assets of the company seem to have been a new movie camera and assorted vehicles used as props. Bee editor Schmitz, proprietor of the Princess Theatre, was very interested in the filming of the comedy. We continue with his description of the shooting of one of the picture's more thrilling scenes. "Sunday afternoon, a few miles northeast of Castalia, we saw a heavily-built Hudson touring car go down a steep incline—amounting to almost a precipice. The car was driven by a young man, who apparently had it under control. However, it plunged over the cliff and dropped more than one hundred feet, completely wrecking the front of the machine. The driver sat at the steering wheel, dazed, but uninjured, a grin of satisfaction on his face, doubtless happy to have survived." | |
