Previous Page 138 Next gling artists. Glen Oyloe was placed in charge of purchasing the musical instruments and a benefit dance scheduled to pay for them. The original band members were: Robert Montagne, Bart Powers, Arnold Barthelme, Palmer Johnson and Ralph Anderson—clarinets; Thearon Hauge, Norman Brown and Gletus Schneberger—saxophones; Lyle Holder and Wilbur Peyer—cornets; Robert Holder, Ralph Cornell, Francis Watne, Rodney Nicholson Jr. and Arthur Mehsling— alto horns; Bert Dessel, Joseph Staska and Richard Klein—trombones; Gustav Rogness —baritone; and Marcel Barthelme—tuba. The band's first presentation was at the Parent-Teachers Association meeting on April 12, 1929. A card party and a dance were held early in the year to raise funds for band uniforms. Over three hundred people attended the benefit and there was a net profit of $150. The uniforms, consisting of white trousers, dark sweater jackets and white caps, presented a very pleasing appearance. The first open air concert was presented in the summer of 1929. Glen Oyloe acted as bandmaster. Following the performance, Monte and Cleo Cahill gave each of the youngsters a quarter for treats. The ages of the members ranged from eight to twelve years. A proposal to assess a two mill levy to support the Boys Band was on the ballot in 1930. It carried with ease—225 to 101. A new bandstand was erected on the livery hill adjacent to Scholz & Sand's pharmacy. This 12' X 20' structure was supported by cement pillars. Two years later, it was moved to the rear of the Citizens §tate Bank. The Boys Band was still active during the early 1930s: Mysterious Everett, the eminent magician (Everett Gross) appeared at the opera house for a benefit in 19315 an item of 1932 notes that they will play every Saturday night this summer; Leo Timp gave free musical lessons to all potential band members in 1933; the next year, the boys were treated to a banquet at the hotel by the businessmen in appreciation of the concerts held that summer. A municipal band was organized in 1938 under the direction of Jud Miller, a music teacher on the school faculty. Several girls were among these musicians. The personnel included: John Andresen, Raymond Hemesath, Thearon Hauge, Ole Hendrickson, Virgil Anderson, William Hemesath, Dennis Zweibohmer, Philomena Gerleman, Irene Hanson Betty Gilbert, Gustav Rogness, Frank Hemesath, Marie Hendrickson, Bert Dessel, John Hemesath, Irvin Fosaaen, Heine Hemesath, Pauline Barthelme and Silas Sevatson. This reporter served as bass drummer of the municipal band for a period during the middle 1930s. Our group of musicians varied from week to week, but some of the members we recall were: Bert Dessel, John Hemesath and Cyril Geskin—trombones; Wilbur Peyer, Lyle Holder and Frank Hemesath—cornets; Bill Hemesath, Thearon Hauge and Norman Brown—clarinets; Gus Rogness—bass horn; and Buster Ryan—snare drum. Our band conductors included Rube Bills, Leo Timp, Virgil Anderson—whoever was available. WWII marked the end of the era of municipal bands in Ossian. The schools gradually took over this entertainment in our community. THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUSAbout one hundred members of the Knights of Columbus met in the community room for the purpose of forming a local chapter. This organization to be known as the Ossian Council. The following officers were chosen: Dr. J. P. Schneberger, grand knight; T. F. Schmitz, deputy; Alfred Bink, financial sec'y; R. J. Sullivan, recording sec'y; E. H. Klisart, treasurer; M. J. Klein, chancellor; L. A. Meyer, advocate; William Mullaney, warden; Leo Dessel, lecturer; Philip Barthelme, inside guard; Herman Schulze, outside guard; and A. F. Dessel, George Cooper and Wm. J.
