JANUARY MARKETS

The public school declamatory contest, held at the opera house, found Esther Rogness winning 1st in the dramatics category; Dorothy Gilbert, 1st, and Ruth Bothel, 2nd, in humorous. These girls placed high in the county competition. Once again, ,Ossian retained possession of the’Ben Bear cup.

The teachers hired for the coming school year were: Fred Mastin, superintendent; Goldie Rathbun, principal; Mrs. L. A. Klisart, domestic science; Miss Loretto McGary, rrammar; Miss Gerda Hanson, intermediate; and Miss Minnie Christianson, primary.

The high school graduates this year were: O. H. S.—Dorothy Gilbert, Marian Teckham, Melvin Hauge and Percy Bullard. De Sales—Doris Sobolik, Viola Broghamer, Ruth Schweinifus and Margaret Lynch.

A parent-teachers association was formed with the following elected as officers; Irs. H. J. Mayer, president; Mrs. W. E. Cornell, 1st vice president; Mrs. J. W. lynch, 2nd vice president; Mrs. L. A. Klisart, secretary; and Mrs. Mary Gunderson, treasurer. The thirty charter members stated that their goal was to establish a working medium between home and school.

M. J. Carter, a young man of seventy years, challenged any lawyer, doctor, or editor to a three round boxing match. The contest to be held on Main street during the day of the Peace Jubilee. Mr. Carter indicated that he would be willing to lengthen the fight, but is confident no opponent from the indicated professions could survive a longer bout.

THE PEACE JUBILEE

The town held a celebration this year to honor returning veterans of WWI. In that was probably the most generous act ever undertaken by the people of Ossian, everything was furnished free to discharged servicemen and their families.

This Peace Jubilee was a grand affair. The day began with a band conceit, presented by the Liberty Band. They were joined at noon by the Castalia Cornet Band. The Red Cross Ladies served a 12:00 mess for all men in uniform and guests. After this lunch, Corporal H. O. DeGraff and Captain Edwin Lee delivered splendid addresses to the assembly.

A large parade, headed by Marshal of the Day, Dr. J. A. Havirland, formed at the Catholic Church, and marched to West street, and thence to Brooks. The order
