Anton Bohr paid $156.41 to top the taxpayers of Military township; again there were many assessments of only fifty cents.

The present fire department officials are: A. C. Heck, president; J. E. Boyle, sec'y; A. F. Dessel, treas.; S. C. Oxley, chief; John Beardmore, ass't chief; John Redding, engineer of chemical no. 1; and A. W. Draheim, engineer of no. 2.

Cornell. The department reports it is in fine financial condition with a bank account of sixty dollars.

Through the kindness of Milwaukee Road superintendent Collins, passenger train no. 2 was stopped east of Calmar to pick up Mrs. Philip Wagner. Mrs. Wagner was very ill. She was taken to Mercy Hospital at La Crosse. A later item relates that a train was halted across from the Lansing home in Ossian to allow Miss Marie Lansing to be put aboard for transporting to a hospital. This co-operation between the railroads and public was mutually beneficial. The train crews were often given shelter at the nearest farm home when blizzards stalled their cars.

Dr. Wells has just received a fine cabinet battery on the x-ray style. The doctor is now prepared to shock, bum, look through, or probe any unfortunate who may require treatment.

The fourth and last annual street fair was held in August. The first day featured four bands totalling 84 musicians. There were only two arrests this year; both described as "ordinary jags". But the festivities were marred by the sad accident of Albert. Severson. He attempted to board a moving train at the West St. crossing, but fell beneath the wheels and sustained fatal injuries. Dr. Geist, assisted by doctors Mackin, Lynch and Belding, performed emergency surgery. They were unable to save his life. Severson was quoted as saying prior to treatment, "I know I'm bad hurt boys—just do the best you can for me."

Considerable controversy arose over the county supervisors' proposal to build a new court house at Decorah. Thirty six of the town's leading citizens, headed by Publisher Heck, offered to donate $14,700 toward the project, providing it is located at Ossian. Calmar pledged $50,000—if that town is chosen as the site of the new court house. Decorah businessmen, confident of retaining the seat of county government, pledged nothing. The Winneshiek electorate voted 2486 to 1572 to issue bonds to finance the project at Decorah.

AROUND THE WORLD IN 1902

The ladies' improvement league sponsored a simulated tour of the world as a community fund raising project. The "World Travelers" left from the "depot",

(Rosa building)—their departure serenaded by the Ossian band. Their first stop was at Norway (Andrew Lee residence) where Norwegian cuisine was served accompanied by native songs by an all male quartet of Norwegian descent.

The next country, Germany (Frank Figge home), found the travelers dining on weinerwurst and sauerkraut, while enjoying polkas played by the Farmers Band.
