and a member of the Modern Woodman, Decorah Lodge #205. The family were all very active and hospitable, entertaining in their home at 812 Maple Ave. They traveled often and visited family in Minneapolis, Aurora, Michigan and Chicago.

After the children married and settled in other areas (Ruth in New Orleans; Charles, Pittsburg, PA; Sarah, Saskatchewan, Canada and Medford, OR; Matilda in Missoula, MT) it became the custom for all to return to Decorah for the 4th of July. The family celebration climaxed with an elaborate display of fireworks that were set off on the south lawn.

M.H. Montgomery retired due to poor health but maintained his interest in the community and gardening, especially his rose garden. Sarah died 20 Jul 1920 after a long illness. M.H. died 20 Jan 1927. They and their son Charles are buried in the Montgomery plot, Ruth M. Day is buried in the Day plot and Sarah M. Reum is buried in the Frank Reum plot, all in Phelps Cemetery.

Moore, Archibald and Anne (Orr)

Archibald ‘Archie” Moore, second son of Thomas and Mary Dean Moore, was born 12 Aug 1848 at Antrim, North Ireland. Anne was born in county Antrim, North Ireland 2 Mar 1850, the daughter of Samuel and Nancy Orr. Archie lived in Calassauqa, PA. Anne Jane Orr lived in Philadelphia, PA. They were married at Philadelphia 14 Oct 1875 conformably to the ordinance of God and the laws of the state of PA.

Archie came to America in 1870. For a number of years he was employed in the steel mills in the Pennsylvania area until strikes closed the mills. Archie filed for citizenship papers in Lehigh Co., PA and became a citizen in Howard Co., IA 12 Oct 1896. Anne came to America in 1870 and lived in PA.

Archie and Anne headed west and made their home in Fremont Twp., Winneshiek Co., IA. They originally lived near the Minnesota state line on a farm owned by the parents of George Kessell MD. Archie cleared the land in Fremont Twp., using a grubbing machine powered by horses. The machine was manufactured in Cresco, IA.

Archie and Anne moved to Cresco in May 1922. Archie passed away 27 Jul 1940. Anne passed away 20 Dec 1941. They were members of the Presbyterian Church and later joined the Methodist Church when they lived in Fremont Twp. They are buried in the Eddy-Kendallville Cemetery in Winneshiek Co. They had 4 sons and 4 daughters: Samuel, Robert, Amos, Ernest, Nettie, Lillie, Mary and Margaret. They had 4 grandchildren: Hall Goldsworthy, son of Nettie and Joe Goldsworthy; Arthur Curtis, son of Lillie and Linus Curtis; Charles E. Moore, son of Ernest and Berneta Fullen Moore; and Donald E. Moore, son of Samuel and Elizabeth Williams Moore.

Moore, Charles O. and Gustava (Erickson)

Charles Oscar Moore, son of James R. and Lucia (Morse) Moore, was born 30 Mar 1845 in Belvidere, Boone Co., IL. He came to Decorah from IL in 1850 with his parents who were among Decorah’s first settlers. The trip to Decorah by the Moore family was by covered wagon. Charles Moore married Gustava Erickson at the bride’s home at Springwater, Canoe Twp, Winneshiek Co. 7 Aug 1867. Gustava was born 16 May 1850 at Hakedalen, Norway, the daughter of Jens and Ingeborg (Hanson) Erickson Ness. She immigrated to Winneshiek Co, with her parents in 1854 (see Jens Erickson Ness).

Charles O. Moore

After their marriage Charles and Gustava farmed for about 50 years on the 160 acre farm that his parents preempted from the U.S. Government in 1850. The farm was located in Decorah Twp., Winneshiek Co., about 2 miles northeast of Decorah. They retired from farming in 1911 and moved to Decorah where they lived for about 25 years, after which they moved back to the family farm. They celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary in 1927 in Decorah. Charles died on the home farm 16 Feb 1936 at age 90. He had served 6 years as a member of the Winneshiek Co. Board of Supervisors and was a member of the Masons. Gustava continued to live on the home farm with her son John Lewis. She died 25 Jan 1943 at age 92. Charles and Gustava are buried at Phelps Cemetery in Decorah.

They were the parents of 3 children: Ida, Henry and John Lewis. Ida M. (b. 1868) married Frank Jewell in 1891 in Decorah and lived in Decorah. They had 3 children: Emma, Nellie and Charles Jewell. Henry Wallace fb. 1870) married Anna Pehl Walker. Henry died in 1903 at age 33. They had 2 children: Kathryne and Robert Wallace Moore.
