to Iowa settling in the Locust area where there were many people from France. On 11 Apr 1884 he married Elizabeth Hillman who was born 7 Jan 1857 in Hanover, Germany. They settled on a farm one and a fourth miles east of Locust. They had 4 children: Wilhelmina Marie (Minnie) b. 28 Mar 1885; George William b. 18 May 1889; Louisa Christina b. 25 Feb 1892 and Julia b. 22 May 1894.
Mr. and Mrs. John Harter
In 1913 John and his wife joined a group returning to Alsace to visit friends and family. While in France their son George had an accident while mowing hay which severely injured his leg. He was taken to the LaCrosse, Wl hospital and while there he was making a remarkable recovery when he suffered a blood clot and died.
On 3 Feb 1915 there was a sale of livestock and machinery at their farm known as the “Pleasant Ridge Fruit Farm”
John was very active in the development of new and improved varieties of apples and grapes winning many awards especially for an improved variety of the Wealthy apple. After selling the farm and leaving his large orchard, he moved to a home on Pleasant Ave. in Decorah. Here he continued his work of grafting and working with improving old varieties and developing new ones. His orchard was quite large and extended from Ravine St. to the Phelps Cemetery.
With advancing age and declining ability, he was forced to sell his beloved orchard and move to a residence on Decorah Ave. He lived there until his death on 30 Mar 1938.

Emilie Wilhelmine Sydow was born 21 Sep 1872 in Conover, IA. She was the daughter of Charles F and Mary A. (Klein) Sydow. Emilie married George A. Harvey 20 Sep 1898. George was born in Alpine, Ml. They lived in Missoula, MT during 1899. They had 2 children: Carl A. and Gretchen Bertha. Emilie died 8 Feb 1947 in Spokane, WA. George died 29 Jun 1947 in Deer Park, WA and is buried in Spokane.
Carl was born 6 Oct 1899 in Missoula. He died 22 Aug 1901.
Gretchen was born 12 Jan 1904 in Missoula. She married William F. Krohn of Putte, Germany 28 Jul 1926 in Salem, OR. She died 30 Aug 1973 in Spokane and is buried at Deer Park, WA. Gretchen and William had 4 children: William G., Shirley, Gretchen P, and Daniel. William G. married Carole J. Perrins 27 Nov 1953 at Coeur'd Alene, ID. They had 4 children: William S., Connie R.., Brent A., and Cathie.

Paul Morris Hasvold was born in Watertown, SD, the son of Morris and Ruth Hasvold. His father was born in Flandreau, SD 15 Jan 1901, to Norwegian-Ameri-can immigrant parents. His mother was born in Worth Co., IA 10 Sep 1900. Her parents were children of Norwegian immigrants. They were married by Ruth’s father, Pastor John Levorson, at Irene, SD 11 Jul 1928. Paul was born while Morris and Ruth were living in Garden City, SD where Morris was the Superintendent of Schools. Paul was their only son.
Paul married Carol Ann Williams who was born in Beloit, Wl, the daughter of Richard and Elinore Williams. Her father was born in Boone Co., IL22 Sep 1908. He was the grandson of very early Norwegian immigrants. Her mother was born in Algonquin, IL 27 Apr 1914. Her father was the son of Swedish immigrants and her mother had both German and English ancestry.
Paul and Carol were married 29 Dec 1958 at Jefferson Prairie Lutheran Church, near Clinton, Wl. The are the parents of two sons, Peter and Thomas.
Peter Morris was born in Minneapolis, MN where his father, Paul, was a student at Luther Theological Seminary and his mother, Carol, a student at the University of Minnesota.
Peter was Valedictorian and a National Merit Scholar at his high school graduation in Decorah. He has a B.A. from Luther College with majors in mathematics and physics, a B.S. from Washington University, St. Louis, MO in mechani
