lumber to build frame houses, including their own, which still is standing today (1995). Many of the other homes in that area were also built from lumber from the Emery-Bowman Sawmill.

As “Merle” and “Lennie” grew to adulthood and married, each was given 80 acres of land from the old homestead. Merle married Martin G. Erickson 20 Mar 1918 and raised 8 children there. Their names are Florence Gertrude (20 Feb 1919-26 Nov 1986), Marion Amy (10 May 1920-12 Jan 1957, train-auto accident), Dale Emery, Doris Carolyn, Deane Gilbert (24 Sep 1925-24 Oct 1974, hit by truck), June Leora, Evelyn Jean, Virginia Merle. Martin passed away 1 Jan 1968, Merle 25 Jun 1982. Both are buried in the Wildwood Cemetery at Cohasset, MN.

"Lennie” married Edna Irene Hill, daughter of another early settler Elmer Nathan and Emma Murphy Hill, 4 Feb 1920 in the Cass Co. Courthouse in Walker, MN. To this union were born 7 children: Lawrence Clark, Orville Jesse, Dwight Milton, Anna Belle, Donald Byron, Clifford Earl, and Ronald Noel . All 7 children are still living (1995), all are married and have given Edna and Lennie 24 grandchildren and many, many great-grandchildren.

Lennie became one of the better farmers in that area. He helped perfect an early ripening seed corn (Minnesota #13), raised many acres of it, picked and sorted it, shelled and graded it all by hand. Then he sold it to many of the seed dealers of the Northern Minnesota area. He also raised such crops as oats, wheat, rye, potatoes, and milked holstein cows, also all by hand, and raised and sold some of the finest Belgian and Percheron work horses in that part of MN.

Leonard Clark Emery passed away 24 Apr 1973, at age 73, while wintering in Phoenix, AZ. Edna lived another 21 years, dying at the Good Samaritan Home in Pine River, MN 15 Oct 1992 at the age of 91 years, 8 months, and 25 days. She was laid to rest beside her husband in the Mildred Cemetery, Pine River Twp., Cass Co., MN. A very rich heritage was left and is being carried on by their children. They have all been active in their various communities, 2 are ministers (one now retired), Anna Belle and husband have been lifetime missionaries to the American Indians in several parts of the United States, and one taught in the rural public schools until his retirement. All in all, that rich heritage is being carried on.

Emery, Omri W.R. and Martha (Mclntire)

Omri W.R. Emery, the 4th child of Dr. George Reid and Candance (Willey) Emery, was born 27 Sep 1829 in Ashtabula, Geauga Co., OH. In 1832 his mother died and later that year his father married Polly Stevens. The family left Ashtabula and traveled by covered wagon for 32 days, arriving at the home of relatives in Winnebago Co., IL. Dr. George farmed land that he homesteaded and an additional acreage he purchased at $1.25 an acre. He continued to practice medicine while farming. Dr. George and Polly had 6 children and in 1870 moved to Kansas where both George and Polly are buried in the Ridgeway Cemetery, Osage Co., near Overbrook.

Omri W.R. Emery came to Winneshiek Co., IA 26 Aug 1849 and homesteaded 160 acres on the N.W. corner of Sec. 17 near Burr Oak. On 11 Jul 1852 Omri married Martha Mclntire, the daughter of Aaron Wells and Emeline (Bates) Mclntire. Martha was born 31 Jan 1837 in New York State.
