Emery, George R. and Diantha (Mclntire)
(Marvin Wicks)
George Ried Emery was born at Thompson, Ashtabula Co., OH, 27 Nov 1822 to Dr. George Reed and Candance (Willey) Emery. George was the second of their four children. Candance (Willey) Emery, his mother, died at Thompson 3 Apr 1832 after a long illness and was the first person buried in that cemetery. His father then married Polly Stevens 9 Jul 1832 and there were four children born of that marriage. The early Emery family sailed from Southampton in 1635 and settled in Massachusetts. George's father, Dr. George, was born at Walpole, NH. He started for Ohio in 1816 with five dollars and arrived with a sixpence. He was licensed to practice medicine in Ohio 1 Apr 1816.
The family moved to Spencer, OH in 1833 and 15 Jul 1839 they left for Illinois arriving one month and a day later at their new home west of Rockford. George was 17 years old. They traveled with two wagons, one pulled by horses and the other by oxen. They also had 12 head of cattle. Roads were poor and they crossed one 7 mile stretch of swamp on a corduroy road. (Roads made by placing logs side by side.) One horse and one cow died on the way. Soon after arrival George's father secured a post office and set about his medical practice. Postage then was 25 cents for one sheet of paper sealed by wax, no envelope and no stamps. The letter could be sent without payment in advance or if paid by the sender the letter would be marked paid. There was little income from his medical practice and the post office was an accommodation for neighbors but in ten years they had managed to build a seven room house with a large basement for a school room and for church services.
George married while in Illinois and had one daughter named Caroline who was born in 1848. In 1849-1850 George, his daughter Caroline and his brothers Omri and Bartlett, all came to Winneshiek Co. George probably came in 1850 and settled in Bluffton Twp.
George Emery married Diantha Mclntire 9 Feb 1852. Diantha was born 30 Nov 1834 in Ohio to Aaron W. and Emeline (Bates) Mclntire. The Mclntires arrived in Canoe Twp. 3 Jul 1849 and put out a washing the next day. They quickly threw up a log cabin. Then, before the doors or windows were in the parents returned to Ohio for another load of provisions. Diantha, 15 years old, and an older sister were left to care for the home and the younger children until their parents returned. Aaron Mclntire died in 1865 and is buried in Russell Cemetery, Canoe Twp. Emeline died at her home on Franklin Prairie 12 Jan 1883.
George had obtained 160 acres along the river on land that would later be part of the hospital farm in Sec. 14 of Bluffton Twp.; that farm was to be their home for many years.
There were 13 children born of this marriage: Ambrose (1853), Candance (1855 m. Jacob Dinger), Milo (1857), Wells (1859), Henry (1861), Melissa (1862 m. Joe Groat), Diantha (1865-1865), Mathilda (1867 m. James Donlon), George (1869), Mary Julia (1871 m. Peter Olson), Omri (1873), Aaron (1875), and Eunice (1878 m. Albert DeLay). The children recorded the following comments about their
