Phillip was married 29 Feb 1892 to Ellen Francis Donlan. Ellen was born 29 Dec 1867 to Patrick Donlan (4 Mar 1827 -1899) and Bridget Burns (1827 -10 Dec 1916). She had 9 brothers and sisters: Mary (1 May 1851 - 18 Dec 1929); Katie (1852 - 1886) married Terrance McConnell (1852 - 1885); James married Tilda Emery; Thomas (21 May 1859 - 1 Jan 1913) married Jane McConnell (27 Sep 1859 - 21 Mar 1911); Peter married Lizzie Kelly; Sarah (7 May 1863 - 17 Nov 1918) married William McConnell (4 Sep 1861 - 12 Dec 1938); John (1865 - 1944) married Mayme Carolan (25 Oct 1865 - 24 Jan 19Q5); Frank (29 Dec 1867 - 8 Mar 1959) married Mamie Gallagher (1874 - 1946) and is a twin to Ellen; Margaret (26 Apr 1871 - 13 Jan 1953) married Tom Carolan (17 Mar 1869 - 25 Sep 1954).

Phillip and Ella had 11 children: Marv Bridget "Mae" (b. 27 Feb 1893) was married 11 Jan 1916 to John A. Cronin (17 May 1894 - 5 Jan 1929). They had 5 children: Harold (m. Muriel Headington); Mary (m. Jim Henry); Myles (m. Maxine Walsh); Phillip (killed in World War II); and John (m. Verna Rosendahi). Elizabeth '‘Bessie" (b. 23 Oct 1894) was married 18 Nov 1919 to Frank Raymond O’Brien (27 Jan 1894 - 28 Aug 1974). They had 8 children: Robert; Eugene (m. Frances Frana); Stephen (m. MaryE. Kroeger); Leonard (m. Roma Adair Schutte); Mary (m. Roger Fischer); Marcella (m. H. H. Herold and Charles Rooney); Loretta (m. Don Orris); and Rose Ellen (m. Steven Frana). Theresa (27 Jul 1896 - 29 May 1984) married Raymond Drew (13 Mar 1899 - 24 Aug 1982). They had 3 children: Daniel (m. Betty Timp); Robert (m. Irene Vine); and Raymond (married and divorced Lois Foltz). Richard (13 May 1898 -16 Dec 1965) married Bea Nolan (17 Jan 1902 - 31 Jul 1967). They had 6 children: Paul (m. Edith Gaul); Emmett (m. Caroline Larson); Gerald (m. Doris Ward); Steven (m. Marilyn Teed); Catherine; and Eugene. Peter (29 Mar 1900-8 Apr 1980) married Margaret Baumler (19 May 1914-23 Sep 1974). They had 2 children: Sandra and Phyllis (m. Karyl Scherfl. James (19 Feb 1903 - 3 Jun 1984) married Esther Hanlon (24 Sep 1910-27 May 1968). They had 5 children. In 1972 he married Esther Fish. His children are: Leo (m. Betty Reid); Howard (m. Alverta Rhines); Robert (m. Doris Rhines); James (m. Mary Ryan); and Joyce (married Floyd Baumler). William (2 Jun 1905 - 23 Jun 1978) married Frances Gaul (b. 12 Dec 1916). They had 4 children: Janice; Larry (m. Ruby Osterlei); Loren (m. Kelly Armstrong); and Kathryn (m. Wally Shearer). Ellen (1 Nov 1907 - 7 Oct 1986) married William Sutton (6 Jun 1910-5 Jun 1963) and Jerome Van Steenhuyse (11 Nov 1900 -20 Apr 1987). She had 4 children: Patricia (m. Donald Goetsch); Ronald (m. Susan Morehead); Dennis (m. Elizabeth Remington); and Rosann (m. Orville Soden). Sylvester (b. 29 Jun 1909) married Vivian Gossman (b. 12 Dec 1917). They have 6 children: Vernell (m. Richard Weis); Patrick (m. Pam Embickson); Kathleen (m. Loel Erickson; Gretchen (m. Ken Clauson); Dean (m. Sherry Sires); and Joan (m. Terry Rollins). Melvin (b. 4 Jan 1911) married Ruth Whalen (b. 11 Mar 1918). They had 5 children: Theresa (m. Orville Scholbrock); Jean (m. Richard Walsh); Gary (m. Lynn Royster); Diana (m. Paul Gartner); and Danny (m. Carol Haack). Robert (6 Mar 1904 - 21 Oct 1904).

Phillip Carolan was raised on the farm and farmed in the Burr Oak area until he moved to Decorah around 1936. He was one of the founders of the Winneshiek Co-op. Sales Commission, once known as Farmers Equity Association. Both he and Ellen were members of St. Benedict's Parish and died in 1958 at the home of their daughter, Bessie O’Brien. They are buried in St. Bridget’s Cemetery.

Phillip Jeremiah Carolan was born 8 Nov 1872. He was the son of John and Johanna (Casey) Carolan.

Phillip married Effie Marie Willson (b. Feb 1977 in Canoe Twp.) on 25 Jan 1899. Effie’s parents were DeWitt Givrtofi arid    (Cro'ian) Wtai. PWp aivd

had one son, Joseph Phillip (my father). Effie died 28 Oct 1899 - 5 days after Joseph was born. After Effie died, her sister Mary Magdalen helped raise Joseph. Effie is buried at St. Bridget’s Catholic Cemetery, Bluffton.

Phillip remarried on 15 Feb 1904 to Elizabeth ''Liz" Agnes Whalen (b. 14 Jun 1880). They had 6 sons and 2 daughters: Maria Caroline, Elizabeth, Thomas Herold, John (Jack), Phillip (Flip), Frederick (Fred), Clement (Clem) and Leonard.

In 1908 Phillip Jeremiah decided to run for sheriff of Winneshiek Co. against Tom Qually. When it came time to vote Liz was at home on her knees praying the rosary that Phillip would lose. He did by one vote! Phillip Jeremiah loved to talk and argue about religion and politics. He was a very strong Democrat.

Phillip Jeremiah died 24 Aug 1957; Liz died 16 Dec 1949. Both are buried at St. Bridget's Catholic Cemetery.
