Winnebago
County In The Civil War
Although at the start of the war Winnebago County was
sparsely settled, several men served in the Union forces
from Forest City: Cornelius Baker, Harrison Beadle, John
Beadle, Charles Church, Allen T. Cole, B. F. Densmore,
James Lackore, William Lackore, David Luts, Hiram
Landrau, and David Secore.
The Hayden Post G.A.R. roster in 1908 included J. W.
Mahoney, J. F. Thompson, William Higinbotham, John
Isaacs, C. M. Curtis, Royal Morgan, M. Barton, H.
Goodmansoa, P. H. Johnson, W. M, Olmstead, B. A. Plummer,
A. M. McEldany, C. Christophersen, Isaac Conner, L. C.
Green, J. W. Allen, Peter Hanson, and H. A. Bates.
1908 also found the following Civil War veterans buried
in Forest City cemeteries: J. W. Albright, T. J. Butcher,
Albert Bolstad, John Clemmens, A. T. Cole, Mac. T.
Garrett, Lewis Howes, Ed Johnson, Erasmus Johnson,
William Jacomson, B. B. Ketchum, C. H. Lackore, William
Lackore, Simon Masteller, Peter S. Nelson, John S. Olson,
I. M. Peters, W. R. Peters, David Secore, Isaiah Virden,
George P. Williams and R. Walts.
Buried in Madison Cemetery: A. Gross, James Lackore, John
Aitchison, Charles Church, N. R. McCallister, L. W, Chase
and John Durant.
L. C. "Lute" Green, died 1931 and A. N. Brones,
died 1934, were the last surviving Civil War vets in
Forest City. Green served in a New York infantry and came
to Winnebago County just after the war. Brones served in
the 43rd Wisconsin Infantry, and came here with his
parents at the close of the war.
