Funeral services for Mrs. Jeff (Vernie) Bass, 87, long time Dayton
area resident were held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 19 at the McGuire
United Brethren church near Dayton. The Rev. Dale Key officiated and burial
was held in the McGuire Bend cemetery.
Mrs. Bass passed away Thursday morning, October at the Colonial Acres Nursing
home in Gowrie where she had been a patient the past four months. She had
been in ill health for several years.
Vernie Culver, daughter of George and Jane Rucker Culver, was born October 4,
1881, at Burnside, IA. She was reared and educated at Burnside and resided
with her family for a brief time in Kansas.
She was united in marriage March 14, 1901, to Jeff Bass, and the couple farmed
the Mineral Ridge community in Boone county. In 1918, the family moved to a
farm northeast of Dayton where they lived until 1932, moving then to a farm in
Yell township, Webster county.
Following the death of her husband October 2, 1957, Mrs. Bass made her home
with a daughter, Mrs. Jess Osborn of Lehigh, later moving to Fort Dodge.
In addition to her husband, she was preceeded in death by one son who died in
infancy, by a daughter, Mrs. Regina Long, who died in 1960; by parents,
several brothers and sisters.
She is survived by six daughters and one son: Mrs Charles (Bessie) Stanberg,
Fort Dodge; Mrs. Oscar (Myrtle) Georg, Knierim; Mrs. John (Opal) Iles, Dayton;
Arthur Bass, Fort Dodge; Mrs. Kenneth (Nellie) Stanberg, Clara City, MN.; Mrs.
Jess (Dora) Osborn, Lehigh; and Mrs. Ione Long, Webster City.
Also surviving are 33 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren; one great-
great-granddaughter; one brother Clyde Culver, Fort Dodge; and several nieces
and nephews.
Mrs. Bass was a member of the McGuire Bend United Brethren church.
