Devoe's Mill - 1859
|
Amos Devoe was born in Richland County, Ohio in 1815. He married Lydia Ann Carenger there on Aug 29, 1841 and started a family. The family moved to Iowa in 1853 and lived in Greenfield Township. Amos purchased the north half of the NW quarter of Section 19 in Greenfield Township on Oct 1, 1855. An 1859 map of Warren County shows Devoe’s Mill two miles away, in section 22, on North River, so he may have owned the mill. The 1860 census lists Amos as a farmer, living in Lynn Township, P. O. Norwalk, just next door to Greenfield Township. Amos & Lydia had 8 children, the first 4 born in Ohio and the last 4 born in Iowa. They were, in order: Melissa Jane, Louisa Ann, Elwood E., Angeline, Anna, Florence Iowa, Harriett, and Francis Louella. Sometime between 1860 and 1870 the family moved to Jackson County, Illinois and remained there. Amos died in 1893 and Lydia died in 1898. Both are buried in Oakland Cemetery, Carbondale, Jackson County, Illinois.
