Lacey Cemetery History

LACEY CEMETERY is located in the southwest quarter of the northwest quarter of Section 8 of Belmont Township. The address is 14495 200th St., Belmont Township, Warren County, Iowa. In an 1872 Map of Warren County, Harriet E. Lacey owned 80 acres of land surrounding Lacey Cemetery. Harriet and her husband, Amos H. Lacey, are buried in Milo IOOF Cemetery.

On March 16, 1864, Hardridge H. Sandy and his wife, Martha A., sold to the Trustees, one acre and twelve and one half rods to be used for public burying ground. This is recorded in Deed Book 2, page 381. In Deed Book 1, page 502, A.H. Sandy and his wife, Martha Ann, sold to the Belmont Township Trustees, one acre to be used for a burial ground in Section 8 of Belmont Township. It is dated June 7, 1869.

Fairview Methodist Episcopal Church Cemetery – previous name of Lacey Cemetery
The obituary of George W. Chittenden, who died in 1882 and buried in Lacey Cemetery, states that his funeral services were held at the Fairview M. E. Church and the body was laid in the cemetery south of the church. Looking for a record of the Fairview M. E. Church, page 525 in the 1879 History of Warren County, Iowa mentions a history of Belmont Township where “Fairview Methodist Episcopal Church is an organization, dating back many years, and had the following original members: Elizabeth Conrad, S. W. Conrad, F. Conrad, B. C. Conrad, E. J. Conrad, J. B. Guy, James Gilbert, Ellen Gilbert, Jno. Ball, Samuel Westerfield, Nancy Westerfield, John Long, Jane Long, James Proctor, Elizabeth Proctor, Sarah A. Surbaugh.  The frame church was built in 1871, at a cost of $1700, and was dedicated during the same year by Rev. Dr. Burns.  Messrs. Sheets, Murphy, Eckles, Guyer, Brown and Barton, have been its pastors, and its present membership number about sixty.  Its condition may be said to be fairly flourishing.”
Below are maps showing the church (and a school) located in the southwest corner of section 5, Belmont Township, and a half mile south (the SW ¼ of the NW ¼ of section 8),  is the church cemetery (now called Lacey Cemetery).
