Hammondsburg Cemetery

HAMMONDSBURG CEMETERY is located in the southeaast quarter of the southwest quarter of Section 11 of Otter Township. It is the only cemetery in this township, Hammondsburg was two miles west and one and one-half miles north of Milo, Iowa.

Early settlers to Otter Township, settling about 1846, were R.N. Hightower, Levi Hollingsworth, the Bales, and Alfred Clark. Robert G. Hammond also came in 1846. He was from Tennessee.

Otter Township was named after the animal. The first birth in the township was Abagail Bales, daughter of Alex Bales, born October 22, 1847. The second child was Thomas Bales, son of James Bales.

R.G. Hammond laid out the town of Hammondsburg, which included post office and a store, in 1850. Early inhabitants of the town included Alexander Benge, T.M. Graham and the Hodgen family. The Christian Union Church of Hammondsburg was organized on October 10, 1889. The first church building was built in 1874 and repaired in 1890.

Rpbert Hammond was Probate Judge for the county in 1850 and Bailiff for the grand jury in 1851. After that, in 1852, he went to California.

In 1887 John Morgan and his wife, Lucinda, deeded 78 square rods for burial purposes. This was probably for an addition to the cemetery.

In 1879 the village of Hammondsburg was put on wheels and moved to the new railroad town of Milo. The cemetery is the only remaining landmark of the forgotten town.
