HARTMAN - JARED - SCRIVNER

Looking for information about the Hartman - Jared - Scrivner families, all
from and near Bedford, Taylor Co., IA.  Family members are buried at
Fairview Cemetery in Bedford.

Ted Hartman married Mabel Jared, they were my great grandparents.  I have
been told that Edward James Hartman (Ted) was a member of the City Council
in Bedford.  Would like to know what years he served and other information
regarding his service in this office.

I am also looking for the names of his siblings.  I know that he had
several, but only have the name of a brother for sure, Julius Lawrence
Hartman (Doodle).  If anyone knows who his other siblings were, I would
appreciate the help.  His parents were Peter Julius Hartman and Katherine
Kelly who lived in Detroit, Michigan.  I have several letters written to my
grandmother (Doris Hartman) from Katherine which mentions several names,
but I do not know how they are connected exactly.

Thank you in advance for helping me sort this out.

The following letter written by Eliza Thompson to her brother-in-law, Addison Rousel Anson Thompson. Taylor Co., Iowa March 25, 1852 Dear Brother, I embrace this opportunity of sending you a few lines to inform you of my present situation and of the circumstances which have occured since writing to you last. Your letter of November last has been received.  Mr. Thompson wrote to you in January last.  As stated in that letter we sold our farm here and moved to Arkansas, but not liking there we were on our return to this place, when in Jasper Co., MO cold weather overtaking us and some of the children being sick we stoped to winter, while there our whole family were sick, and Mr. Thompson in particular had a severe spell, but after some three weeks he recovered so as to be able to walk about, and thinking he would feel better traveling, he concluded to commence again our journey, which we did about the middle of February, but the journey was too fateagueing for him in his feeble condition, the weather being damp and chilly at that time.  We suceeded in reaching Jackson Co., MO when he, again, was taken ill with the winter fever.  He lay sick for seventeen days, when upon the eighth day of this month he died leaving me alone, among strangers, with none but my little children.  No tongue can describe the feeling of my heart at this time.   I there buried him among strangers and I have suceeded in making my way to my Fathers, how I can hardly tell.  I expect to remain here or near here.  I wish you to write me as often as you can and let me know how you all do.  The children send you alla their love and best wishes. Give my wishes to all. Yours affectionately, Eliza Thompson A. R. A. Thompson and family The following penciled note was added later, probably by Sally Ann Thompson, Lucinda Fletcher Brewer, or Leona Lindsey:  "A. R. A. Thompson's brother died and was buried in an orchard."  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Eliza's husband (the Mr. Thompson of the letter) was Russel Loyd Thompson.  I am seeking any information relative to this family. Thanks

LAIRD
Pat -- My compliments on the improved page.  I looked at all the Lairds in the
newspaper index and was blown away by the detail.  I've been casually
researching this branch for a few years and the detail in that index was
breathtaking.  It was a treasure trove of new information.  I have done
similar projects before, and they are monumental undertakings.  Thank you!!

I wanted to submit a new query:

LAIRD --  John, Edward, and Levi Laird and their families were among the
original settlers in Gravity and Holt Township.  I have done a lot of research
on the origins of this family prior to emigrating to Iowa, as well as during
their early time in Taylor County, and would love to make contact with any
Laird descendant in Taylor County or of this branch.  Please e-mail me!  Thank
you. JohnLaird@aol.com

Lower - Heller - Bentley - Babcock

I am looking for any information on the Frederick and Elizabeth Morrison
LOWER family.  I have some info, enough to know that they were in the
Page/Taylor county area at the time of the 1870 census.  They had been
in Elizabeth twp, Miami county OH in the 1860 census.  It appears that
Frederick died in 1915 in Hawleyville and Elizabeth died in 1918 near
New Market.  I believe they are buried in the Guss Cemetery.

One of their sons (my great grandfather), Harry LOWER married Martha
Elizabeth HELLER 11 Nov 1890 in Nodaway, Taylor IA.  Harry and Martha's
daughter Grace Ellen LOWER married James Beryl BENTLEY 18 June 1919.
They lived all their lives in the area and were living in Clarinda when
they died.  I believe their daughter Madalene BABCOCK and her daughter
Teresa (BABCOCK?) still live in Clarinda.

Harry and Martha and at least one of their sons, Clarence Cyril LOWER
(my grandfather), moved to southern California (Riverside) around 1920.
Another son, Shelby, died in California.

I would like to find someone who knows the history of the family.  I am
particularly interested in finding out about Frederick's father
Christian LOWER.  He apparently died in Ohio before Frederick moved to
Iowa.  The census records indicate Christian was born in Germany.

Thanks for any help.
