Obituary - Brian James Radke, infant son of Mr and Mrs James Radke of Clarinda, died Wednesday morning at University Hospital in Omaha where he had been taken after his birth at Municipal Hospital May 28.

Besides his parents, James and Brenda Joyce Rine Radke, he is survived by grandparents, Mr and Mrs Albert Radke of New Market, and Mrs Mae Rine of Clarinda. Mrs Bertha Drennen of New Market is a great grandmother.

Private family graveside services will be held for the infant at Memory Cemetery at New Market with Walker Funeral Home making arrangements.

Obituary - Mrs Leta Radke, 68, of Clarinda, formerly a New Market resident died Tuesday evening, November 26, at Municipal Hospital after a long illness.

She was born October 10, 1923, near Guss, the daughter of Vanzo and Bertha Ross Drennen Sr. On August 25, 1942 she was married to Albert Radke who preceded her in death March 11, 1982.

Mr Radke graduated from New Market High School in 1941. She was a substitute clerk at the New Market Post Office and later a traveling clerk for State of Iowa Liquor Commission for several years and later managed the New Market and Bedford Stores. She retired in 1981.

She is survived by a son Jim and wife Joyce Radke of Clarinda and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by parents, husband, infant grandson, brothers Vanzo Jr and Clifford Drennen and sister Gladys Carpenter.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 am, Friday, November 29, at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Loren Daly officiating. There is open visitation at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Clarinda Ambulance Department.

Obituary - Henry Nelson Ray, son of John and Melinda Ray, was born in Taylor county, Iowa, January 10, 1862, and died at his home in Gravity, Iowa, July 25, 1935, aged 73 years, six months and 15 days.

He grew to manhood on the old farm northeast of New Market, where he received his early education in the rural school. He later taught several terms in the rural schools of Taylor county.

On March 10, 1887, he was united in marriage to Miss Belle Brown and to this union one daughter, Neva Glenn was born. She passed away at the age of three years, on January 19, 1895.

After a few years of their married life spent on the farms of the vicinity of his old home, he moved with his wife to a farm near Ladoga and continued his residence there for many years. Leaving this farm they purchased their present property in north Gravity, moved to it in 1907, and this was his home at the time of his death.

Besides his wife he leaves near relatives as follows: One sister, Mrs Belle Feagins, of Willowe, Oregon; another sister, Mrs Lucy Drennan of near New Market; one brother, John Ray of Fremont, Nebraska; and another brother, Frank of Miniatare, Nebraska.

One sister, Mrs Nancy Easter, passed away in 1928, one brother, Isaac, died in 1888 and another brother, T.J. Ray passed away in 1917. Besides the near relatives left to mourn his going, he leaves a large number of nephews and nieces, besides a host of neighbors and friends.

Spending as he did, his entire life, more than seventy-three years, in this section of Taylor county, he has seen all the changes which have taken place in its development from a prairie wilderness to its present condition.

Mr Ray was of a deeply religious nature, and gave a large portion of his time to church work. He had definite and well defined convictions as to his duties to his God and his obligations to his fellowmen and his life indicated a sincere effort in following these convictions.

He was a good neighbor, honest, honorable, generous, and will be sadly missed by those who have known him these many years.

Sunday morning a telephone message was received stating that Rev C?b? could not conduct the service on account of the death of his brother, Chas. and Rev. Joe Green was called at Diagonal. Rev Green was a former pastor of the Christian church here and a close friend of the deceased. He conducted the funeral service, using as his text the words of Paul, "I have fought a good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith."

Some of the favorite songs of the deceased were used at the service, and sung by a mixed quartet composed of Mrs O.C. Posten, Mrs Albert Bender, George Roberts and J.S. Francis, with Mrs Claude Gray as accompanist.

The pallbearers were: J.A. Gaebler, Bruce Monahan, W.L. Chandler, M. Perdew, Ben Richardson and Nelson Savage.

The body was taken to Old Memory cemetery west of New Market, where burial was in the family lot there.

Obituary - Brief announcements was made in our last issue of the death of Mrs Norval Reeves. She had been confined to her home for many months and suffered greatly with a nalady that baffled medical skill. While her death was not unexpected, yet it came sooner than anticipated and was rather sudden. In her death the community loses a woman of many vitures and she will be sincerely mourned by all who ever came in contact with her. All her life had been spent in this immediate vicinity and her many deeds of kindness and helpful ministrations will long remain bright spots in the hearts and minds of countless numbers.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon in the M.E. church, conducted by Rev E.O. Douglass. A large attendance testified to the high regard in which she was held. Her grandson, Bruce Mason, who was called to Camp Dodge about two weeks ago, was permitted to come to the funeral. Other out of town attendants were Jas Wilson and wife of Trenton, Nebr., John Reeves and wife of Villisca, Chas Kelley and wife of Clarinda. Interment was in Memory cemetery.

Susannah A. Pace, daughter of Chas W. and Elizabeth Pace, was born in Page co, Iowa, July 15, 1857, and entered into rest from her home in New Market, Iowa, May 2, 1918, at the age of 60 years, 9 months and 17 days.

January 28, 1875 she was united in marriage to Norval Reeves who lives to mourn her departure. To their home were given two children, Mrs Arvilla Hartman and Walter Reeves. Five grandchildren, Bruce Mason, Mrs Phyllis Hill, Lois Hartman, Letha Reeves and Marybell Reeves, and one great grandchild, Mason Hill, all of whom survive her.

Mrs Reeves was converted in 1874 and united with the Methodist Episcopal church, of which she ever remained a loyal interested, earnest member. Her years of service have prepared her for the Heavenly rest and reward. May her influence linger as a fragrance in all our lives. New Market Herald, May 9, 1918

Obituary - Mary Katherine Krout, daughter of John and Nancy Krout, was born Nov 6, 1855 in Taylor county, Ia. She passed away at her home west of New Market Aug 30, 1920, after a lingering illness at the age of 64 years, 9 months and 21 days.

She was united in marriage to John Samuel Reynolds, March 11, 1885. To this union were born eight children, five girls and three boys: Sarah Vesta who passed away in infancy, Lola Miller, Millie Kirby, Ina Webb, Zelma Radky, John E., William E., Arthur E., all residing near New Market with the exception of Millie Kirby who resides at Greely, Colorado.

She leaves to mourn her loss a kind and faithful husband, seven children, one brother, Milton Krout of Estes Park, Colorado, and seven grandchildren, one daughter, father and mother; two brothers and three sisters preceded her to the Heavenly home.

She was united with the Baptist church in early womanhood and was a devoted Christian during her life. New Market Herald, Sept 9 , 1920

Obituary - Funeral services for Leroy Albert Ridnour, 78, of New Market, were held February 17, at Shum - Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford. Mr Ridnour died at Pearl Terrace Manor in Bedford on February 15, 1972. Interment was at Memory Cemetery, New Market.

Leroy Albert Ridnour, son of Samuel Wilson Ridnour and Annie Belle Meads Ridnour, was born November 24, 1893 in Page County Iowa.

He was united in marriage to Edna Lorene Whitstine in 1916 and to them were born seven children.

Albert followed the occupation of a farmer in this and neighboring areas and he was living near Parnell, Missouri at the time of his recent illness.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife who died March 18, 1934 and a daughter Melvena Opal (Mrs Elvin Miller).

He was united in marriage to Ada Allen Jan 13, 1958 at Maryville, Mo.

Left to cherish his memory are his children: Kenneth Albert, Keith Alman, Cleo Arvilla Anderson, Donald Wayne, Esther Lavone Miller, and Dean Earl; 15 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; three sisters: Myrtle Ellis, Hattie Geer, Bertha Harland; other relatives and many friends.

He was a member of the Masonic Order; and he will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Ridnour, Albert, 79, died last Tuesday at Terrace Manor in Bedford after he had suffered a stroke a week before. He had been a patient at the home for about a year.

Mr Ridnour lived all of his life in Taylor County, farming in the Gravity and New Market areas besides around Bedford.

Six children are Keith, Kenneth and Dean of Clarinda, Donald of Gravity, Mrs Cleo Anderson of Medford, Ore, and Mrs Esther Miller of Lenox.

He is survived by three sisters, Mrs Bertha Harland and Mrs Arthur Geer of the Dallas community, and Myrtle Ellis of St Joseph.

Services were held Thursday from Shum - Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford with burial at Memory Cemetery near New Market.

Obituary - Mr Neely Ridnour, 89, of New Market died Sunday, December 29, at St Francis Hospital in Maryville, Mo after a long illness.

He was born April 5, 1902, near Guss the son of Benjamin Belle and Hannah Elizabeth Head Ridnour.

On July 4, 1927 he was married to Thelma Viola Stevens who survives.

Mr and Mrs Ridnour farmed in the Shambaugh area until retirement.

He is survived by his wife Viola of the home and four children, Lyle Ridnour, Yuma, Az; Mrs Charles (Phyllis) Singleton, Covington, Ky; Mrs George (Mary Lou) Doughit, Clarinda; and Mrs Dwight (Marcia) Hickman, Mt Ayr. There are nine grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Mrs Gladys Ridnour of Shambaugh is a daughter-in-law. Mrs Paul (Beulah) Boelling of Creston is a sister.

He was preceded in death by parents, son Stanley, four sisters and three brothers.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 pm Thursday, Janaury 2, 1992 at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Gary Patterson officiating. Burial will be in Memory Cemetery at New Market.

Visitation will be from 7-8 pm, Wednesday at the funeral home.

Obituary - Wilse Ridnour for nearly thirty years a resident of this community passed to the great beyond last Saturday. He had been in failing health for some time and only two weeks before his death had returned from Rochester, Minn., where he had gone to consult the Mayos. They pronounced his malady cancer and told him nothing could be hoped for. He suffered a great deal, but bore it without complaint. He was a good citizen, a kind husband and indulgent father, and his death will be a great blow to his immediate family. The entire community will mourn his death.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in the M.E. church , conducted by Rev J. Owen Smith.

The burial service at the cemetery was conducted by the Masonic order of which deceased was an honored member. Interment was in Memory cemetery.

Samuel Wilson Ridnour was born May 1, 1859, in Fayette county, Penn. He removed with his parents in early life to Page county, Iowa, where he grew to manhood, and on the second day of February, 1881, he was united in marriage to Annie Meads of Page county, Iowa. To this union were born twelve children, three of whom preceded the father to eternity.

While young he confessed faith in Christ and united with the United Brethern church.

In 1894 he settled on a farm one mile northwest of New Market where he resided to the the end of life.

He was a member of A.F.A.M. 453, New Market.

Brother Ridnour renewed his convenants of faith in Jesus Christ, celebrated the Lord's Supper and united with the Methodist church of New Market and kept the faith to the end.

He departed this life Feb 25, 1922, aged 62 years, 9 months, 24 days. He leaves to mourn their loss, his wife, Anna Ridnour of New Market, John W. of Gravity, Ia., Levi C. of New Castle, Neb., Flora Whetstine of Republican City, Nebr., Goldie Geer of New Castle, Neb., Maud Schoonover of Conway, Ia., Albert Ridnour of New Market. Obituary - Harry Theodore Rine, born March 4, 1885, in Nebraska died 3 am, Monday at West Heights Manor where he has been a resident since Feb 20.

Had made his home with daughter-in-law, Mae Rine for five years at her home at 614 N 13th. He had been a farmer in Page and Taylor County.

Surviving is a son, Marion of Otis, Colo, and daughter, Mrs Arthur (Margaret) Gerig of Gillette, Wyo and daughter-in-law Mae Rine. He has 13 grandchildren. A son, Alva, died in 1967.

Services at Walker Funeral Home, 2 pm, Thursday. Burial in Memory cemetery, New Market, the Rev Gary Hinkle officiating.

Obituary - Services for Mrs Matthew (Jessie) Rine, 78, were being held this Monday at First Baptist church in Shenandoah and burial in New Market's Old Memory Cemetery. She died Friday at Shenandoah.

Mrs Rine is the last of 12 children in the family of the late Thomas Jefferson and Sarah Van Pelt Osburn. She was born in New Market on June 20, 1894. Her parents died when she was young and she made her home with her sisters, Mrs John (Ella) Campbell, and Mrs Perry (Alma) Beal. She spent all her life in Page and Taylor counties.

She was married to Matthew Rine at Shambaugh on Dec 24, 1912, and they were able to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Nine children were born to them, five daughters surviving her. A son, Harold, was killed two years age in Arkansas, and her husband died Nov 18, 1968.

The daughters are Mrs Ben (Ruth) Shipers of Omaha, Mr Wilfred (Ruby) Good of Shenandoah, Mrs K.E. (Dorothy) Bennett of Seward, Neb., Mrs Earl (Darlene) Baker of Shenandoah and Mrs Dave (Helen) Glaze of Omaha. She had 22 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

The Rev Lucas Buttry officiated at the services. Mrs Gary Maffin was soloist, Miss Terri Sorensen organist, Mrs Warner Malmberg cared for the floral tributes. Ushering were J.O. Obituary - Lint H. Roberts, 90, native of Guss vicinity and lived all but 10 years in Taylor County, died at 2:25 a.m. Saturday at his home here after failing health since Dec 1. He had lived in New Market since 1945.

Memorial service was held at Walker Funeral Home in Clarinda this Monday with Rev George White of the New Market Methodist Church in charge. Organist was Miss Aletha L. Hutchings, and casket bearers were Paul Adams, Jim Clark, Vanzo Drennen, Wesley Glassgow, Ralph Borden and Cliff Drennen. Burial was at the side of his wife in the Memory Cemetery near New Market.

He was the son of Mr and Mrs Warren Roberts. His wife, Nancy Alice Sparks, died four years ago. He had been a member of the Odd Fellow Lodge.

He is survived by five children, Elmer M. Roberts of New City, Ariz, Mrs Vera Mueller of New Market, Mrs Marjorie Brouillette of Westminster, Calif, Mrs Birdie Butcher, Shenandoah, and Don O. Roberts of Omaha. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. A son Harry, preceded him in death several years ago. Obituary - James E. Ross, an old and respected citizen of this county passed away at the home of a relative near Sharpsburg on Tuesday of last week and was buried in Memory cemetery Saturday. Funeral services were held in the Methodist church conducted by Rev Penn.

James E. Ross was born in Benton township, Taylor county, Ia., on July 10, 1859, and died July 19, 1921, aged 62 years and 9 days. He grew to manhood and spent nearly all his life in the county in which he was born, most of the time being spent at farming. In 1883 he was married to Jenny Combs, who preceded him in death April 1, 1907. To this union three children were born, two of whom still survive. They are Earl of Boulder, Mont., and Mrs Pearl Langlois of Butte, Mont. He also leaves three brothers, four sisters, three grandchildren, many other relatives and a host of friends. Obituary - Brief mention was made in our issue of last week of the death of Wm. H. Rowe. Mr Rowe had been a resident of New Market for more than thirty years and was universally respected by all who knew him. He was a splendid citizen, an exemplary husband and indulgent father. He had been ill for a long time and while his death was not entirely unexpected yet when the final summons came the family were unprepared for it. He had served his country well and honorably as a soldier and his memory will long be cherished by his surviving comrades.

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon in the M.E. church, conducted by Rev J. Owen Smith. Interment was in Memory cemetery.

Wm Henry Rowe was born in Franklin County, Ind., March 31, 1842, where he resided until 13 years old, when he came with his parents to Des Moines county, Iowa. Here he grew to manhood. In 1864 he enlisted in Co D First Iowa Cavalry, served two years in the Union army. Was mustered out of army service at Austin, Texas in Feb 1866. One year later, Feb 5, 1867, he was united in marriage to Mary E. Armstrong of Des Moines county, Iowa.

To this union were born 6 children, one of whom, Elmer, at age of 6 years preceded his father to eternity.

In 1876 he came to Taylor County and settled on a farm two miles northwest of New Market, and on March 5, 1890, moved to New Market where he resided until his death.

Under the ministry of Carder he confessed faith in Christ and united with the Methodist church of New Market, and has been a consistent member ever since.

He was a member of Upton Post 248 G.A.R.

He departed this life March 1, 1922, at his late home in New Market, aged 79 years, 11 months, and 1 day. He leaves to mourn their loss his wife, Mary Rowe, and 5 children as follows:

Obituary - Mrs Florence Mae Rucker, 72, of Clarinda died Saturday morning at Bethesda Care Center where she had been a resident for the past three years.

She was born Aug 29, 1907, at New Market, the daughter of Roy and Jose Mae Orme Bramble. She was married to Clarence Everett Rucker who preceded her in death in 1957.

Mrs Rucker is survived by five children; Clarence Lowell Rucker, Clarinda; Mrs Boyd (Betty) Waltermeyer, Las Cruces, N.M.; Robert Rucker, Clarinda; Mrs Max (Patricia) Macrander, Ashland, Ne; and Keith Rucker, Broomfield, Co. There are 26 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Sisters are Mable Ogden, Red Oak, Ia; Lulu Bramble, Clarinda; Beulah Viney, Clarinda; Leona VanSant, Marro Bay, Ca.

She was preceded in death by two sons, two brothers, and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held this Monday afternoon at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Rev Jerold Irvin officiating. Joan Archer was soloist and Grace Perry organist. Casket bearers were: Larry, Tim, and Patrick Rucker, Mike Baker, Terry Macrander, and Leslie Lawson.

Burial was in Memory Cemetery at New Market.

Obituary - Funeral services for Marvin Runyan, age 88 of Des Moines, formerly of New Market, Iowa, who died Friday, March 15, 2002 were held Monday, March 18, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Bedford with Pastor Russ Clark officiating. Interment was held in the Memory Cemetery in New Market. Memorials can be given in Marvin's [name]. Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford.

Marvin Lee Runyan was born September 24, 1913 in rural Stratford, Texas the son of Lester Runyan and Etta Snively Runyan. As a young child, his parents moved to Gravette, Arkansas, where he lived until the age of eighteen. He then moved to Bloomfield, Nebraska where he met and married Rosa Adelia Harrison on September 19, 1934 in Yankton, South Dakota. In 1940 they moved to College Springs, Iowa and continued to farm several different farms in the New Market, Iowa area. They purchased their own farm near Conway, Iowa in 1948, continuing to farm, plus being a dairy farmer. He retired in 1977 and moved to New Market, Iowa where they lived until their health failed and they moved to the Luther Park Health Center in Des Moines, Iowa in June 1997.

Marvin attended John Brown University as a young man. He attended church regularly all of his life and was a member of the Church of Christ in New Market. His favorite hobby was pitching and playing horseshoes and he won many trophies. He enjoyed his big family of relatives and visiting with all of this friends and nieghbors.

Marvin is survived by all of his five children, Rosa Lee Jamison Pollock of Anita, Iowa; David Runyan and wife Eileen of Federal Way, Washington; Ione Kaminski and husband Richard of Albuquerque, New Mexcio; Inez Mathews and husband Robert of Kansas City, Kansas; and Ada Kay Cavin of Des Moines, Iowa; a sister, Eva Belle Hill of Casper, Wyoming; thirteen grandchildren, Ivalene Kindred, Galene Schwab, John Lee Jamison, Jolene Johnson, Malvin W. Jamison, Steven Wilson, Lisa Stillan, Shad Mathews, Steve Huettel, Michael Huettel, Deborah Luxem, Denise Metzger and David Cavin; seventeen great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Marvin was preceded in death by his wife Rosa Adelia; his parents Lester and Etta; two sisters, Mary Ruth Kuhlman and Pauline Cabbage; two brothers, Ross and Keith Runyan; two sons-in-law, John Jamison and William H. Obituary - Funeral services for Mrs Haven (Daisy) Savage, 73, of New Market were held February 10 at Walker Funeral Home in Clarinda with Carl Cummings officiating. Mrs Savage died February 7, 1972 at Ringgold County Hospital in Mt Ayr where she had been a patient for two weeks. Interment was at Memory Cemetery, New Market.

Mrs Daisy Vylena Savage, the daughter of Jessie K. and Nettie Moore Savage was born January 16, 1899.

She spent her childhood and attended school near New Market, Iowa.

In 1934 she was married to Calvin Brown of Siam. Mr Brown died in 1943.

In 1945 she was married to Lawrence Cole of Blockton who died in 1956.

She was married to Haven Savage who died in 1971.

In addition to her husbands, her mother and father preceeded her in death.

She is survived by three step children; three uncles, Roy Moore, and Frank Savage, of New Market and Glen Savage of Clarinda; two aunts, Myrtle Hipsley of Clarinda, and Della Parsons of Lenox, and a host of relatives and friends.

Daisy was a kind and helpful neighbor and friend, always willing to help in sickness or sorrow. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Obituary - Little Dorothy, the only daughter of Mr and Mrs Ben Savage, was wafted to her eternal home Tuesday morning when the Death Angel touched her with his chilling breath. Dorothy had been ill with croup a week or two ago, and had apparently recovered, but she had a relapse, and despite all that medical skill, coupled with tender and loving care, could do, the paralyzing hand of death reached out and claimed her for his own.

Dorothy was an extremely bright and winsom child, the pride and joy of the home, and her taking away leaves a void which nothing can fill. None of us can fathom the ways of Providence and when death visits the home and snatches the apple of their eye, it is hard for the parents to believe that He doeth all things for the best. But in his own good time the veil will be torn from our eyes and we shall understand.

Mr and Mrs Savage, in their hour of trial and grief, have the heartfelt sympathy of the whole community. Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday afternoon and the little form was laid away to await the great day when all tears shall be wiped away.

Viva Dorothy Savage, daughter of Mr and Mrs Ben Savage, was born Dec 24, 1914 and departed this life Nov 15, 1921, aged 6 years, 10 months and 22 days. She leaves to mourn their loss a father, mother, 5 brothers, 2 grandmothers, one great-grandmother, aunts, uncles and cousins together with all who knew her. Obituary - Funeral services for Mrs Nora Savage, 81 of Clarinda will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Rev Jerold Irvin officiating.

The family will meet friends at the funeral home, 7-8 p.m., this Monday evning.

Mrs Savage died Sunday morning at Municipal Hospital after a few weeks illness.

She was born July 19, 1897, near Siam, the daughter of Edward and Sarah Maxwell Arthur. On April 6, 1913 she was married to Paul Savage who preceded her in death in 1968.

She was an active member of the United Methodist Church in New Market when she lived there. After the death of her husband she moved to Clarinda where she has made her home.

Mrs Savage is survived by five children: Edward Savage, Maryville, Mo., Mrs Walter (Elma) Prather, Clarinda, Mrs Harold (Erma) Watkins, Calipatria, Calif., Mrs Donald (Elaine) Sharpe, Clarinda and Eldon Savage, Fort Collins, Colo. There are nine grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. Five sisters survive, Pearl Pierson, Bedford, Ia., Opal Crawford, Woodbine, Ia., Ethel Mackey, Clearmont, Mo., Nellie Arthur, New Market and Velma Plowman, Sharpsburg, Ia.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one grandchild, one great grandchild, two brothers and three sisters.

Mary Anderson will be organist. Casket bearers will be: Don Clayton, Terry Orr, Raymond Moore, Dean Moore, Otis Wood, and Bill Bix.

Burial will be in Memory cemetery at New Market.

Obituary - Death came at noon this Monday to Orie Haven Savage, 68, of Gravity who has been ill for several months with cancer and has been under care at the West Heights Manor.

Mr Savage has been a maintenance operator for Taylor County until his health failed. His wife is Daisy Savage at the home in Gravity, and children Mrs Bob (Eleanor) Bonfoey of Eugene, Ore, Harley Savage of Rhinelander, Wisc. and Mrs Todd (Carol) Sheldon of Massachusetts. Brothers are Fred of Duluth, Minn and John R. of Golden, Colo.

He was born in Oklahoma on May 30, 1902 to Fred and Cora Bryan Savage.

Obituary - Funeral services for Vickie Lynn Sefrit, 31, of New Market will be at 10:30 am, Saturday at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home.

Miss Sefrit died early this Thursday morning, Jan 3, 1985, at University Hospital in Omaha following a long illness.

She was born Oct 30, 1953 at Clarinda, the daughter of George and Daisy Pace Sefrit.

She was a beautician before her health forced her to quit working.

Survivors include her parents of New Market; three brothers, Randy of Cameron, Mo; Carroll of Omaha, and Frank of New Market. Grandparents are Mrs Alena Pace and Mr Frank Sefrit of New Market.

Burial will be in Memory cemetery at New Market.

Memorials may be directed to the leukemia fund.

Obituary - Rev Charles K. Shackleford, 69, pastor of the Baptist church in New Market for five years, died at his home there Sunday morning at 8:35 after a lingering illness of 12 weeks. Funeral services will be held at the Baptist church in New Market Tuesday morning at 10:30 conducted by Rev Pruitt. Burial will be in Memory cemetery.

Rev Shackelford, who had been a member of the Masonic lodge for the past 30 years, had lived in New Market for the past eight years. He is survived by a son, Howard, of Chicago, Ill, two daughters, Mrs Verla Blunt of chicago, Ill, and Betty Robinson of Los Angeles, Calif, also a sister, Mary Tucker of Kansas City, Mo, and a half brother, Will Shackelford of Algona, Iowa. Obituary - Funeral services for Mrs Floy V. Sharpe, 84 of Clarinda will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Carl Cummings officiating.

Mrs Sharpe died Wednesday night at Bethesda Care after a long illness. She was born April 15, 1894, the daughter of Joseph and Susan Hay Peterson. She was married to W.O. (Bill) Sharpe who preceded her in death in 1963.

The Sharpes lived in Shenandoah prior to Mr Sharpe's death. Following his death Mrs Sharpe lived with her son and family until entering the rest home.

Survivors include her son and daughter in law, Mr and Mrs Donald Sharpe of Clarinda and one granddaughter, Judy Hayes of Clarinda. Fae Nesmith of Bettendorf is a sister. Mabel Sharpe of Cedar Rapids is a daughter-in-law.

She was preceded in death by a son Duane in 1976 and one great-grandchild.

Burial will be in Memory Cemetery at New Market.

Obituary - Coryl Nevin Shields, 88, formerly of New Market, passed away Thursday, October 10, 1991 in Wyoming, Mn at the home of her daughter Doris Van Horn.

She was born to Harry and Irene Nevin on August 30, 1903 at New Market. She was married to Dewey Shields of Siam on March 1, 1922.

Coryl and Dewey lived in the Siam and New Market area being engaged in farming. Coryl became a member of the Siam Church of Christ in 1926. Later Coryl worked in this area caring for many people in their home who needed assistance.

After moving to Minnesota she continued her work by helping older people until forced by illness to reitre. Since moving to Minnesota she made her home with her daughter and husband.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and her brother, Coleman Nevin. She is survived by her son Dennis of Leavenworth, Ks; her daughter and husband, Doris and Val Van Horn of Wyoming, Mn; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, a sister-in-law, Helen Shields of Clarinda and many nieces and nephews.

Obituary - Fred Shields, 72, of Clarinda died Saturday morning at Municipal hospital following a long illness. He was a farmer of the Siam area before moving to Clarinda in February of 1976.

Mr Shields was born April 28, 1905, near Shambaugh, the son of Joseph Milton and Amelia Walter Shields.

On Dec 7, 1940 he was married to Helen Harper who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs Albert (Nancy) Schlensig, Dunlap, Iowa and Mrs Dean (JoAnn) Thompson of New Market. There are 3 grandchildren.

Dewey Shields of New Market is a brother and sisters are Viva Fine of New Market and Elsie Hulpiau of San Bernardino, Calif.

Mr Shields was preceded in death by six brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services were held this Monday afternoon at Walker Funeral Home with Loren Daly officiating. Janice Hardee was organist and singers were Pat Gant and Carolyn Hughes.

Casket bearers were Ernest Gray, Eldon Miller, Dale Crawford, George Stanley, Eldon Fine and Reid Shields. Burial was in Memory cemetery at New Market.

Obituary - Ethel Minnie Farrell Slaight daughter of Benjamin and Celista Barnum Farrell, was born on a farm in Page County, Iowa, on June 18, 1893.

She was united in marriage to Claud Earnest Slaight on March 5, 1913. He preceded her in death on January 31, 1966.

She was the last member of her own family of nine children. Her husband, parents, eight brothers and sisters, one daughter, and one grandson preceded her in death.

Left to cherish her memory are one daughter Mrs Gilbert (Darlene) Yearous and her husband of New Market, Iowa, three grandchildren: Mrs Ronald (Sharon Rae) Foster and her husband, Mrs Carl (Sandra) Lee and her husband of Clarinda, Iowa, Gary L. Beckett and his wife of Des Moines, Iowa; 11 great grandchildren, and one great, great grandson, other relatives and friends.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of New Market, Iowa.

Her family and friends will remember her as a kind and loving wife, mother, grandmother, friend and neighbor, and she will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Slaight, Ethel - Mrs Ethel Slaight, 85 of New Market died early Tuesday morning at home in the New Market Housing Units where she had lived since Sept 1.

Funeral services will be at 2 pm., Friday at Walker-Merrick Funeral home with Carl Cummings officiating.The family will meet friends at the funeral home from 7:30 - 8:30 p.m., this Thursday evening.

Mrs Slaight was born June 18, 1893, in East Page County, the daughter of Benjamin and Celesta Barnum Farrell. She was married to Claude Slaight who preceded her in death in 1966.

Mrs Slaight is survived by one daughter, Mrs Gilbert (Darlene) Yearous of New Market and three grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a daughter Evon Seals and one grandchild.

Burial will be in Memory Cemetery at New Market.

Opal Lavone Hutcheson was born November 2, 1917, at Braddyville, Iowa to Fred Brown and Stella (Wilson) Brown. She was united in marriage to Howard Homer Hutcheson and later married Carl Sleep, who preceded her in death May 19, 1982. Opal worked as a waitress and was cook at Goldenrod Manor. Opal was the caregiver for her Grandmother, Renee Brown. She enjoyed needle-work, fishing, gospel music, Wheel of Fortune and enjoyed sports on T.V. in her later years. Opal loved to dance. She loved her family dearly.

Survivors include her children: Gary Hutcheson and wife Julie of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Alan Hutcheson and wife Dixie of New Market, Iowa, Kila Larsen and husband Leon of Yorktown, Iowa, nine grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, one great, great grandchild, brothers; Duane Brown of Clarinda, Iowa and Marvin Brown of New Market, Iowa. Obituary. - Frances L. Smith a former resident of this community died at Dallas, S.D., Feb 10th and his remains were brought here Wednesday for interment. Services were held Wednesday afternoon in the Baptist church, conducted by Rev Osborn, and interment was in Memory cemetery.

Frances Lew Smith was born at Salem, Iowa, November 24th, 1868 and died at Dallas, S.D., February 10th, 1918, aged 49 years 2 months and 17 days.

He leaves a father and two sisters, Mrs Lydia Brown and Mrs A.H. Mann all of Hamburg, Iowa, two brothers, E.R. Smith of Omaha, Nebr., and T.J. Smith of Dallas, S.D. His mother passed away some years before. New Market Herald, Feb 14, 1918

Obituary - Martha Jane Hulse was born in Greene county, Tennessee, April 3, 1883. She was united in marriage to Thomas Tullock June 5, 1898. To this union were born ten children, two of whom preceded the mother to eternity, also Mr Tullock who died in 1917.

She was married again June 28, 1919, to Ebb Smith. To them were born two children, one dying in infancy, the other only a few days old is being cared for by friends. Mrs Smith was a member of the Methodist church. She departed this life Sunday morning April 16, 1922, at her home in Clarinda, at the age of 39 years and 13 days.

She leaves to mourn their loss her husband and infant son, also nine children by her first husband, Bertha, Carl, Emma, Bessie, Lillie, Albert, Donald and Beryl; one brother, Willie E. Hulse of Hepburn, one sister Mrs Eli Manley of Excelsior Springs, Mo., and her father, John Hulse of Tennessee.

Funeral services were held here Monday afternoon in the M.E. church, conducted by Rev J. Owen Smith, and interment was in Memory cemetery. New Market Herald, April 20, 1922

Obituary - Valda Viola Smith, 80, widow of Ebb Smith, died at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital at 10:28 pm Friday, after having been hospitalized for about a week.

She was the daughter of the late Miles and Ella Jane Moody Walker, and was born on a farm near Gravity. She was a Clarinda resident for 48 years, her home since 1934 being at 618 E. Garfield St. She was employed for many years at the Swift and Company plant and she worked at the Linderman Hotel. Her husband died Aug 27, 1961.

Suriviving her are nine children, Wayne Smith of Shenandoah; Leona Chambers of Sterling, Ill; Margaret Stone of Rock Port, Mo; Thomas Smith of Clarinda; Viola Chambers of Rock Port, Mo; Irvin Freeman of Tacoma, Wash; Glenn Freeman of Tacoma, Wash; Bobbie Parrott of Clarinda, and Cleo Ames of Vallejo, Cal.

Funeral services were conducted from the Walker Funeral Home at 2 pm this Monday, with D.L. Roberts in charge of the services.

Soloist was Horace Richardson, and organist was Miss Aletha L. Hutchings.

Casket bearers were Enedino Valdivia, Charles Chambers, Wayne Smith, Thomas Smith, Dennis Stone, Orville Chambers, and Charles Leroy Smith.

Obituary - Alonzo C. Snodgrass passed away at his home in this city, Wednesday morning, March 17, 1920. The funeral was held at the Christian church in this city Friday afternoon at 1:30, conducted by Rev. W.A. Chapman of Pickering, Mo. Interment was in Memory cemetery, near New Market. The following is the obituary of Mr. Snodgrass:

"Alonzo C. Snodgrass, son of Joseph and Jane Snodgrass, was born in Taylor county, Iowa, March 7, 1854. On June 12, 1877, he was married to Mary L. Elkins. There were born to them one son and one daughter. The son, Howard Burch Snodgrass, resides at Blackfoot, Ida.; the daughter, Mrs Flo Miller is the wife of S.E. Miller, near Shambaugh. With the exception of some three or four years he lived in Missouri, practically his whole life has been spent in Page county, and within a few miles of the old homestead. His health has not been very good for several months and on March 8, he was stricken with paralysis and remained in a state of semi-consciousness until Sunday, March 14, when he lost consciousness, and on Wednesday, March 17, he passed away in death, at his home in Clarinda. He was of a bright, cheerfrul disposition, carrying sunshine wherever he went; was of good moral character, and well respected by all who knew him. He engaged in farming all his life, until four years ago, having by industry and good business management, gained a competence, he retired from the farm, moving to New Market. In August, 1917, he came to Clarinda where he has since lived. Besides his wife, son and daughter, he is survived by two brothers; A.B. Snodgrass of Clarinda and M.M. of Denver, Colo. These are all that remain of a family of seven, he being the third of the family to die within a year, one brother dying at his home in Star, Ida., just six weeks ago Friday.

The late Mr Snodgrass was an uncle of Rev R.C. Snodgrass, pastor of the Christian church of this city and Rev. R.E. Snodgrass, pastor of the Christian church of Savannah, Mo."

Obituary - Funeral services were held in Clarinda Dec 29, 1984 for Ivan Walter Sparks, 74, of the New Market area, who died Dec 26, 1984 at Municipal Hospital in Clarinda.

He was born Oct 22, 1910 at Hopkins, Mo, the son of Grover and Myrtle Lammers Sparks. On Nov 23, 1932, he was married to Pauline Holland at Maryville, Mo. They farmed in the Bedford and New Market areas.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Clarinda, where services were held, with Rev Ray Draper officiating.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Jack and Virgil.

Survivors include his wife, Pauline; one brother, Eldon, of Jackson, Mn, and four sisters, Ruth Bulkee of Tacoma, Wa; Ruby Detty of Casey, Ia, and Darlene Beck and Nellie Scott, both of Sharpsburg, Ia.

Spargur, Ruth Noble Spargur of Glenwood died Sunday morning at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs where she had been a patient for the past two weeks.

She was born in Clarinda, Iowa, the daughter of John (Jack) and Anna Choate Noble.

She had lived in Glenwood for many years and retired from employment at the Glenwood State Hospital school.

Mrs Spargur is survived by a sister, Mrs Eulah Pease of Morris Plaines, N.J. and nieces and nephews.

Memorial graveside services will be held at 10:30 am, Wednesday at Memory cemetery at New Market with Rev John Clark officiating.

Additional services will be held later in the week at Glenwood.

Obituary - Edna Sprague, 82, of New Market, died Saturday at the Goldenrod Manor where she had been the past 2 1/2 years.

Edna was born June 21, 1909 in Fullerton, Ne. Her parents were Charles and Myrtle (Wilkerson) Dailey.

She was married to Floyd Sprague on September 18, 1926 in Red Oak. She was a member of the Siam Church of Christ.

Survivors include her husband of the home, three children, Mrs Dean (Kathleen) Teeters of New Market, sons Floyd Sprague Jr., (Bud) of Bedford, and Larry Sprague of Hastings, Ne. There are 14 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren. Sisters Ethel Nichols of Fullerton, Ne., and Marjorie Dennis of Carbondale, Ks. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.

Obituary - Funeral services were held Sunday at the New Market High School auditorium for Mr and Mrs Ermel (Crystal) Todd, victims of an auto accident near Stockton, Kans, Thursday. The Valley Township couple had been vacationing in the Black Hills and Colorado and were en route home when the accident occurred. Glen Mitchell was in charge of the service. Aletha L. Hutchings was organist.

The Todds were married July 12, 1960 living on the farm near Villisca.

Mrs Todd, the former Crystal Maxine Combs, was born Oct 1, 1916, on a farm north of New Market and was graduated from the New Market High School in 1934. She was married Dec 31, 1937 to Glen E. Spring who preceded her in death in 1960. She leaves two children, Gary and Joyce; a daughter-in-law Loleta, and two grandchildren, Jeffrey Glenn and Melanie Lynne of New Market. She is also survived by her mother, Mrs Sylvia Combs of New Market; a brother, Neil Combs of Gravity; a sister, Mrs Harold (Jean) Hartman of New Market. Her father, Harry Combs, died in March of 1964.

Burial for Mrs Todd was at Memory Cemetery near New Market. Casket bearers were Verl Wright, Elsey Guilliatt, Irvin Miller, Lloyd McCullough, Lloyd Jackson and Eddie Strong. Clarinda Herald Journal

Her parents were married Sept. 20, 1835 - 100 years ago. Her oldest brother, Sardius Ross, was born Aug. 10, 1836, died at Pensacola, Fla., in 1864; Joel Teeter, born 1838, died in California in 1863; Thomas James, 1840 - 1895, died in Minnesota. These three brothers were born in Elkhart, Ind. Jess Erastus, born in Ohio, in 1841, died in Taylor county, Iowa, 1858; Sarah Elizabeth, born in St. Joseph county, Ind., 1843, died 1851, Berrien county, Mich.; Eli Dickson, born in Ohio, 1845, died 1863, Jefferson barracks hospital, St. Lous, Mo.; Elvina, born in Michigan, 1850, died in Taylor county, Iowa, 1858; Daniel Mason, born 1853 in Michigan and died in Salt Lake City about a year ago.

She was married in 1870 to Mr. Salyards. To this marriage was born one son, James H., now living in Taylor county, Iowa.

She was again married in 1875 to J.N. Squier and to this marriage was born A.J. Squier of Clarinda and E.N. Squier of Villisca. All the children, with several of the grandchildren and one great grandson were present at the funeral. She was laid to rest in the Memory cemetery, by the side of her husband, who passed away in 1931.

She came to Iowa about 1857 with her parents, who settled on a farm west of where New Market is now. This was the postoffice and stage coach stop, her father being postmaster during the Civil War. She told many incidents of people stopping with them - even Indians. Some time after the Civil War they moved to Old Manti, near Shenandoah, being held up for about a month after they got started by muddy roads along where No. 3* is now and somewhere near Yorktown. She was over this same road a few years after the paving was put in, making the same distance now in less than an hour. She, with the family moved from Manti to near Chariton, where she was married to Mr. Squier, moving with him to Montgomery Co., near Villisca, then finally to Page and Taylor counties where she has lived for nearly sixty years, having lived in Braddyville, Bedford, Clarinda and New Market.

Two years ago last March she suffered a stroke of paralysis and was almost helpless since then. The final stroke came on Tuesday, Nov 5, from which she could not rally, passing away at 12 o'clock, noon, Friday, Nov 8, 1935. She has been a member of the Methodist church for many years and always attended services when it was possible for her to do so.

She leaves the three sons, seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren, other relatives and friends to mourn her passing. She was past 83. Services were held at the Pruitt Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. W.H. Meredith, pastor of the Clarinda Methodist church on Sunday afternoon. Pallbearers included C.C. Suckow, Clyde Tinker, Del Holbrook, Arch Young, Laurel Green and Noel Squier. Music was furnished by Mrs. J.W. Slocum, J.B.M. Pruitt and Rev. W.H. Steel, J. Robert - J. Robert Steel's final rites were held July 22 at the Shum - Novinger Funeral Home here with Rev Ollie Odle conducting the service. Burial was at Memory Cemetery in New Market.

James Robert Steel, the second of 11 children of Frank Dyne Steel and Mary Jane Sparks was born on a farm near Ft Scott, Kans., February 6, 1890 and passed away July 19, 1970 at the St Francis Hospital, Maryville, Mo.

His childhood was spent on the Kansas prairie. Two sisters and one brother died in childhood. Two brothers, Sam and Henry, preceded him in death. Those surviving are one brother, Wiliam A. Steel, four sisters, Mrs Walter Gerke, Mrs Grace McCoun, Mrs Nora Beck and Mrs Nellie Baldwin.

J.R. or "Bob", to most of his friends, met Nelle Marie Norlin while they were attending Emporia (Kansas) State Teacher's College. They were married May 28, 1915 at the Methodist Parsonage in Manhattan, Kans. To this union were born five children, four of whom survive: John N. Steel of Cedar Rapids, Ia., Mrs Dorothea Holt, Denver, Colo., Mrs Helen Hardie, Houston, Tex., and Mrs Edith Dye, Goodland, Kans. There are 12 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. His wife, Nelle, and a daughter Mrs Jane Riedle preceded him in death.

Besides the wife and family, Bob liked people and learning. He graduated from Emporia State Teachers' College at Emporia, earned his B.S. degree at NWMS College at Maryville, Mo., and did graduate study at Kansas University in Lawrence. He taught in rural schools and high school English and Literature for more than 30 years. He was elected County Superintendent of Schools in Taylor County in 1924 to serve in that capacity until 1930. He was a life member of the National Education Association.

Love for farming remained all his life and he owned farm land from 1915 to his death. He was active in Farm Bureau work most of those years, more recently as Membership Chairman of Bedford until failing health forced reduction in his physical activities.

He joined Covenant Lodge No 463 AF & AM in New Market, Ia., serving as Worshipful Master in 1937. He also was a member of Triangle Chapter No 68 of Royal Arch Masons in Bedford, Ia., serving as High Priest in 1929.

The family joined the Bedford (Ia.) First Baptist Church April 29, 1928. Bob in recent years was active as teacher of the adult men's Sunday School class and an active member of the Senior Citizens.

Obituary - Funeral services for Mrs J. Robert (Nelle) Steel of Bedford were held Thursday, October 6, at 2 pm. at the Bedford Baptist Church. Mrs Steel died Oct 4 at Clarinda Municipal Hospital. Interment was at Old Memory Cemetery, New Market.

Nelle Marie Steel, second daughter of John and Emma Norlin, was born near Lenora, Kans., Aug 18, 1888. She was born on a farm, educated at Emporia Teacher's College in Emporia, Kansas and taught school. She was noted for her college athletic work including basketball, baseball, tennis and track. During her life at school in Emporia she attended many religious meetings of the UWCA, especially the Rocky Mountain Assoc. at Estes Park, Colo. She was a pioneer organizer of the 4-H Sewing Club in Polk township, Taylor county at the same time her husband organized the 4-H Acre Corn Contest in 1916. She also was active in the Eastern Star and Farm Bureau organizations.

On May 28, 1915 she was united in marriage to J. Robert Steel and to this union five children were born. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and one daughter.

She is survived by her husband, Robert; one son, John, Cedar Rapids, Ia; three daughters, Mrs Dorothea Holt, Bad Kreuzeck, Germany; Mrs Helen Hardie, Houston, Texas; and Mrs Edith Dye, Goodland, Kans.

Surviving brothers and sisters are: John Norlin, Salina, Kans.; Albert Norlin, McCracken, Kans; Mrs Mayme Riedle, Los Banos, Calif; and Mrs Minnie Britton, of Salina, Kans; 12 grandchildren and one great grandson; other relatives and a large circle of friends.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Bedford, where she taught the Gleaners Sunday School Class for over 30 years. She loved her church and enjoyed working in it. She was a wonderful and loving mother, a devoted wife, a kind neighbor, a friend of many, and always ready to help anyone as long as her health permitted. Bedford Times Press

Obituary - Brief mention was made last week of the death of Mrs F.M. Straight, which occurred Tuesday morning, May 7. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in the M.E. church, conducted by Rev Douglass. The church was filled to overflowing with friends and neighbors who came to pay their last tribute of love and esteem to the memory of this good woman. Deceased had been in very poor health for many years, yet through all her illness she maintained a cheerful disposition and bore her suffering in silence. She was an exemplary wife and mother, and was held in high regard by all who knew her.

Nancy Jane Dunn was born at Sardinia, Ohio, Feb 4, 1846, and at the time of her death was aged 72 years, 3 months and 4 days. She was united in marriage to Francis Marion Straight on Oct 18, 1868. To this union were born eleven children, seven daughters and four sons. One son died in infancy. The surviving children are Frank E., Long Beach, Calif., Chas E., New Market, Nathan, New Market, Mrs Nora Abbott, Imogene, Iowa, Mrs Emma West, Eldon, Iowa, Mrs Alice Kuhn, O'Dell, Neb., Mrs Zetta Bix, New Market, Iowa, Mrs Maude Burks, Omaha, Neb., Mrs Ethel Kreiger, Council Bluffs, Iowa, Mrs Blanche Hartman, New Market. These with the sorrowing husband, are left to mourn her loss. She also leaves thirty four grandchildren and one great grandchild.

She united with the church when but ten years of age and throughout her long and useful life remained faithful to its teachings. New Market Herald, May 16, 1918

S. Straight of Villisca came Sunday to attend the funeral of his sister-in-law, Mrs F.M. Straight. He will remain for a few days to visit relatives and friends. He makes his home with another brother on a farm near Villisca and the wife of this brother died on the same day that Mrs F.M. Straight passed away. Measles and tonsilitis was the cause of her death. She left several small children who were all down with measles. New Market Herald, May 16, 1918

Obituary - Memorial services for Edwin Nathan Strong, 65, who had been seriously ill for several months, will be held at 2 pm Friday at the Walker Funeral Home with burial in Memory Cemetery at New Market.

He was a lifelong farmer, the son of Ernest Gage and Zada Collier Strong of rural Clarinda, born June 8, 1906. In 1932, he and his wife moved to the farm a mile and half northeast of New Market which was the original home of Mrs Strong's grandparents, and this has been the family home for 39 years.

He married Helen Taylor May 3, 1927. Surviving, besides his wife, are two sons, Burton and Roger of the local area, and three grandsons. Mrs Lafayette (Helen) Boman of Clarinda is a sister, and Emoery Strong of Creston a brother. His parents and two brothers, C. Beryl and Harlan C. Strong, preceded him in death.

The Rev M. Francis Hubbel will officiate at the services with Miss Aletha Hutching organist. Casket bearers are Eddie Fidler, Charles Wilson, Henry Brown, Otis Wood, Hildred Diggs, Harold Hakes. Clarinda Herald-Journal
