Obituary - Brief mention was made last week of the death of Mrs I.W. Abbott, which occurred on the 22d. She had been an invalid for many years and had suffered much, but throughout it all she was sustained by her great faith in the Lord. She was one of the early settlers of this community and was known and loved by all for her womanly character and untiring efforts in behalf of the community and church. She will long be remember for the good she accomplished.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at her late home, conducted by Rev Goodwin of Red Oak. Interment was in Memory cemtery.

Margaret Elizabeth Hayes, daughter of John W. and Priscilla Epps Hayes, was born at Hudsonville, Mississippi, July 27, 1846, and died at New Market, Iowa, March 22, 1921, aged seventy four years, seven months and twenty-five days.

At the age of 6 months she came with her parents to Salem, Henry county, Iowa, where her early life was spent.

August 30, 1863, she was married to Isaac Warren Abbott. They made their home in Lee county until the year 1868 when they moved to Taylor county. Into their home came 14 children, four of whom preceded their mother in death. The ten surviving children are Frank W. Abbot, of Coal Creek, Colo., Edward F. Abbott of Kansas City, Mo., Mrs Mary Gardner of Boulder, Colo; John I. Abbott, Bowling Green, Ky; Chas F. Abbott of Kansas City, Mo., Mrs Daisy Pinkerton of Shambaugh, Ia; Waldo L. Abbott, Loveland, Colo.; Mrs Clarice I. McPherrin, Loveland, Colo.; Geo A. Abbott, Santa Barbara, Calif.; and Arthur G. Abbott, Des Moines, Ia. She is also survived by one sister, Mrs W.H. Rose of Oskaloosa, Ia., and by two brothers, P.E. Hayes of North Platte, Nebr and W.F. Hayes, of Salem, Ia. These with the bereaved husband, fifteen grandchildren and one great grandchild unite with a wide circle of friends and neighbors to mourn her passing.

She united with the Cumberland Presbyterian church at Dunn school house in this county in 1868 and when they came to New Market she and her husband entered the fellowship of the Methodist Episcopal church here of which she has remained a faithful, consistent and earnest member. Together with her husband, she helped to bear the work of the Kingdom in the community. She loved the church and the pastor always found in Brother and Sister Abbott confiding friends, whose home was always open, and whose hearts were always warm.

Sister Abbott was a devoted wife and mother. The home was the center of her interest and there her unselfish heart poured itself out in ministering care. Her mother love overflowed even the bounds of the home circle and she mothered every little child which came around her. The very atmosphere of her household was fragrant with the home spirit and no one ever came within the home without being conscious of the rare spirit which presides over the home. She leaves to her family the precious heritage of a life rich in character and rare in the beauty of its personal Christian quality.

Calm and unafraid, her heart stayed on him to whom she had committed her trust, she slipped away into that rest which awaits the Masters own. She has gone where are the fountains of Eternal youth.

Adams, Amanda Ethel -

Obituary - Amanda Ethel Adams was born March 15, 1894 in Taylor County, Iowa to Barton and Laura Hazelbaker Adams. She entered into rest Monday, June 30, 1980 at the Bethesda Care Center in Clarainda, Iowa where she had been since early in May of this year.

She grew up on the family farm in Taylor County and attended Frog Valley school. She continued living there in her adult life, caring for her father until his death. For several years she and her brother, Loyd have lived in New Market, Iowa, where he and her many friends and relatives cared for her during her long illness. She had been bedfast for six years.

She was a member of the Church of Christ in New Market, Iowa. She had been a member of the Valley Sunshine Club when her health permitted her attending.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, one half-sister, three brothers and one infant brother.

She is survived by one brother, Loyd, of Bethesda Care Center in Clarinda, Iowa. Nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, July 5th at the Church of Christ in New Market with Jon Palmquist and Loren Daly officiating. Music was furnished by Lois Moore and Shirley Larson.

Casket bearers were Gordon Rainforth, Dean Moore, Merle Harland, Carroll Stamps, Bob Malcom and Bob Hardee. Burial was in Memory Cemetery near New Market.

Adams, Cora Ethel - Cora Ethel Adams, the daughter of Roscoe Dowden Savage and Ella Jane Fitz Gerald was born Oct 13, 1884. She passed away Jan 6, 1978 at the age of 93 years 2 months and 24 days.

She spent all of her life in the New Market area with the exception of two years in Weeping Water, Nebr where she went in a covered wagon and lived in a sod house. Cora was united in marriage by her grandfather, The Rev T.J. Fitz Gerald at the home of her parents south of New Market on Oct 2, 1902 to John Manford Adams. John preceded her in death July 9, 1970, after 67 years of marriage. Eleven children were born to this union. Survivors include four sons, two daughters and one brother; Raymond Adams of Gravity, Harold Adams of Colorado, Warren Adams of Oregon, Keith Adams of Kansas, Helen Parks of Gravity, Dow Savage of Colorado. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and ten great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, five brothers, one sister, four sons, Leslie, Kenneth, Ronald, and Claude Babe Adams and one daughter Theo Greenway.

She was a member of the Christian Church, Rebekah Lodge and American Legion Aux. Services were held at 3 o'clock January 9 at Walker Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa. Burial was at Old Memory Cemetery, New Market, Ia. She was the most loved of Mothers and will be greatly missed by loving sons and daughters, grandchildren, friends and neighbors.

Adams, Ethel - Mrs Ethel Adams, 93, of New Market died Friday morning at Bedford Manor Nursing Home in Bedford.

She was born October 13, 1884, near New Market, the daughter of Roscoe and Ella FitzGerald Savage. On Oct 29, 1902 she was married to Manford Adams who died July 9, 1970.

Mrs Adams had been in her own home in New Market until recent months when health forced her to be cared for in the nursing home.

She is survived by six children, Mrs Lester (Helen) Parks of Gravity, Ray Adams of Gravity, Harold Adams of Alamosa, Colo., Mrs Margie Knapp of Blue River, Ore., Jack Adams of Portland, Ore., and Keith Adams of Oswatomie, Kan. Dow Savage of Alamosa, Colo is a brother.

Mrs Adams was preceded in death by sons, Kenneth, Claude, and Ronald and a daughter Theo Greenway, also five brothers and one sister.

Funeral services were held this Monday afternoon at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Loren Daly officiating. Maynard Burch was soloist and Grace Perry organist. Casket bearers were: Harold Adams, Keith Adams, Ray Adams, Gary Knapp, Bruce Buckingham and Abel Greenway Jr.

Burial was in Memory cemetery at New Market.

Adams, Gladys - After an illness of two weeks little Gladys Adams passed away Monday morning and was laid away in Memory cemetery Tuesday afternoon. Funeral services were held at the home, conducted by Rev Roper.

Gladys Mary Adams was born in New Market, Taylor county, Iowa, April 8, 1917, and departed this life September 9, 1918, aged 1 years, five months and one day. She was the youngest child of Bert and Clara Adams. She leaves to mourn her loss, father, mother, two brothers, Paul W. and Johnnie E. and two sisters, Mildred E. and Shirley E., other relatives and a host of sympathizing friends.

Little Mary was sick just two weeks and suffered great pain but was patient to the last and never refused any treatment that was offered her. Always gnetle, always loving, she was the sunbeam of the home and her presence will be sadly missed.

After loving hands did all they could, God's call came: "Suffer Little Children to Come unto Me." She is safe in the arms of Jesus, where we hope to meet her some day. New Market Herald, Sept 12, 1918

Obituary - Gladys Adams, age 92, died Friday, February 2, 2001, at her home in Clarinda, Iowa. Funeral services were held at 10:30 am, Monday, February 5, 2001, at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa with Daniel Wallace and Reverend Alvin Trusty officiating. Visitation with the family was Sunday, February 4, 2001, at the funeral home from 6:00-7:00 pm. Burial was in Memory Cemetery, New Market, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the Omaha Home for Boys or to the Little Indians in South Dakota. Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa, was in charge of arrangements.

Gladys Adams was born November 28, 1908, in Taylor County, Iowa, to Ira and Elsie (Stewart) Rankin. Gladys was a graduate of Hopkins High School, Hopkins, Missouri. She was united in marriage February 25, 1927 to Claude (Babe) Adams. He preceded her in death February 25, 1973. Gladys took LPN training in 1951. She was a supervisor at the Mental Health Insitute of Clarinda, Iowa, retiring after thirty-five years. Gladys worked as a coordinator of the Clarinda Meal Site.

Survivors include her daughter, Betty Jo Maley of Clarinda, Iowa and grandson, Jim Maley of Castlerock, Colorado. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, Bobby Don Adams, age 2, and sister Audrey Haarstick. Clarinda Herald-Journal, Feb 07, 2001

Adams, William - Funeral services for William R. Adams, 88, of Clarinda were held May 25 at Walker Funeral Home in Clarinda with Mr Carl Cummings officiating. Mr Adams died May 23, 1969 at West Heights Manor Rest Home in Clarinda. Interment was at Memory Cemetery, New Market.

William Rodney Adams, son of Levi and Mary Jane Adams, was born near Bedford in Taylor County, Iowa, January 26, 1881.

He was one of a family of seven: two sisters and four brothers.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, sisters, Julia Brown, and Bessie Farrell, brothers, Wiley and Clarence.

He spent most of his life on a farm near Gravity until the death of his mother at which time he made his home with his sister, Julia, until her death two years ago.

In December he came to make his home with a great niece, Lillian Freuck at Essex, Iowa until his last illness April 11.

He is survived by his brothers Manford and wife of New Market and Jess of Athena, Oregon; sister-in-law, Faye Adams of Gravity and brother-in-law, John Farrell, Sheridan, Mo.; a host of nieces and nephews.

He was a good friend and neighbor to all who knew him.

Aid, Nellie - Nellie Marjory, the little three year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Roy Aid, passed away early Saturday morning from that dread disease, diphtheria. She had been ill only a few days and it was not until Friday that the disease fully developed. That afternoon antitocsin was administered, but the disease had taken too firm a hold and the little one succumbed to its ravages. Little Marjory was a winsome child, exceptionally bright and was the life and joy to the now bereaved and saddened home. The patter of her little feet and cheerful voice are stilled forever on earth, but in that great realm above we doubt not her little spirit is one of the brightest in His diadem. Burial which was private, was in Memory cemetery Saturday afternoon.

Nellie Marjory Aid was born in New Market on Jan 18, 1918, and died Oct 29, 1921. All of her life was spent in the town of her birth.

This is the second visit of the death angel to this home during the present year, an infant son answering the summons last spring. In this second loss the sorrowing parents have the sympathy of all. New Market Herald, Nov 3, 1921

Alexander, Hazel Irene - Mrs Hazel Irene Alexander, 83, a native of Coin, died March 19 at Jefferson Manor in Jefferson, Ia. Prayer services were held March 20 in Jefferson and graveside services were held March 21 at Old Memory cemetery at New Market [Iowa].

She was born Jun 26, 1901 in Page County [Iowa], the daughter of Thomas and Lottie Austin Weaver. She was raised and attended school in Coin. She then helped her mother in the local telephone exchange. When her mother moved, she remained as chief operator.

On Nov 1, 1945, she was married to Leslie G. Alexander at Hiawatha, Ks. The couple lived in Coin, pursuing their hobbies together of woodworking.

After her husband's death in 1957, she moved to Jefferson. She did practical nursing at hospitals, nursing homes and in private homes in Jefferson and Des Moines.

She was a member of the First Methodist Church of Coin and a member of the Royal Neighbors Lodge there.She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and one sister.

She is survived by a sister, Mrs Harold (Mildred) Mears of Jefferson; a sister-in-law, Mae Weaver, also of Jefferson and nieces and nephews.

Alkire, Mary Etta - Mary Etta Alkire, daughter of George and Ida V. Prickett was born on a farm in Dallas township, Taylor County, Iowa, October 4, 1878, and passed to her eternal reward at her home in New Market, Iowa, June 22, 1953 at the age of 74 years, 8 months and 18 days. All of her life was spent in and near New Market with the exception of six years when the family resided in Colorado.

She was united in marriage to Thomas M. Alkire at Clarinda, Iowa, April 5, 1899. To this union were born four daughters. They are Letha Radke of Clarinda, Lola Irwin of Yakima, Wash, Ethel of Medical Lake, Washington, and Dorothy White of Clarinda.

She is survived by her husband and four daughters, one sister, Mrs Hollie Mickle, of Denver, Colorado, one brother, Oscar Prickett, of Casper, Wyoming, eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

She united with the Church of Christ in early youth and remained faithful to her profession of faith to the end. Mrs Alkire was a devoted reader of the word of God. For a number of years she taught a Bible school class in the Church of Christ in the community in which she lived. Her life was a living testimony for Christ.

Funeral services were conducted at the New Market Church of Christ at 2:00 pm Wednesday, June 24, 1953 with the Rev I.E. Stickelman in charge. Vocal music was by Carol and Thaine Cabbage. Pianist was Mrs Opal Brown. Casket bearers who carried her to her final resting place in the Old Memory Cemetery were: Merle Harland, Harry Harland, Harry Nevin, Doyle Cooper, Darrell Pratt, and Newt Jones. Honorary bearers were : Leslie Pratt, Roy Pratt, and Ralph Pratt.

Obituary - Tom Akire, 84, a long-time Taylor County farmer, died Thursday at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital, where he had been taken with a heart ailment.

He had lived his entire life in the New Market vicinity until coming to Clarinda three years ago. He had lived with a daughter, Mrs Ernest (Letha) Radke, at 310 N 14th St.

The funeral was held this Monday afternoon at the Walker Funeral Home, the Rev I.E. Stickelman clergyman in charge. Burial was to be in Old Memory Cemetery at New Market.

Mr Alkire had a brother, Wilse Alkire of Athelstan, Ia, and three other daughters, Mrs Lola Irwin of Yakima, Wash, Mrs Ethel Fine of Medical Lake, Wash, and Mrs Dorothy White of Clarinda. His wife, Etta, died in June 1953. Clarinda Herald Journal

Obituary - Glocile McAlpin, daughter of Willie and Amanda Weaver McAlpin was born near New Market, Iowa March 27, 1903, and passed away July 20, 1937 at Brown hospital in Clarinda at the age of 34 years, 3 months and 23 days.

When she was but 4 years old, the home was left motherless and for a number of years she was cared for by her grandmother McAlpin. Later she again returned to the parental home and resumed her school work in the rural school and entered high school at New Market later.

On June 21, 1921, she was united in marriage to Harvey Anderson. To them were born four children, Deloris, who has been a constant companion to her mother, Harold, Lois Arlene and Donna Lee, who with the husband are bereft of a devoted wife and mother.

Her first consideration always was her family and her home which was made attractive by her efforts and handwork. Of a quiet and unassuming nature, only those who knew her best could appreciate the finer qualitites of character molded into a life that made her the true wife and noble mother that she was.

Her church preference and associations were with the Church of Christ at New Market. She was a member of the Loyal Sisters class in which she took an active part when health and conditions permitted her to do so.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her father dying two years ago. Together with her husband and children she leaves three brothers, Earl and Dennis McAlpin of New Market and Russell of Villisca; a half-brother, Eugene of Pomona, California; three sisters, Mrs Orville Slaight, Mrs Worthy Werts and Mrs Albert Holland; two half-sisters, Mrs Floyd Dougherty and Norma Jean McAlpin and her step-mother, Mrs Effie McAlpin, all of New Market.

Rites were Sunday afternoon, July 25 from the Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev Mr Shackelford. Interment was in Old Memory cemetery. Clarinda Herald Journal

Anderson, Henry - William Henry Anderson died at his home in north New Market on Thursday, Nov 21, 1918 from pneumonia following an attack of the flu. Funeral services were held Friday at Memory Cemetery where interment took place.

Deceased was the son of Mr and Mrs Tom Anderson and was born in New Market on Feb 14, 1891. At the time of his death he was 27 years, four months and five days old. He leaves a wife and three small children to mourn his loss, besides his father, mother, several brothers and sisters. They have the sympathy of the community in their loss. Anderson, Margaret - Mrs James Anderson passed away Sunday at the home of her son Edgar northeast to town. She had been in poor health for the past year, but it was not thought she was dangerous. About four weeks ago she went to the home of her son Edgar for a visit and the next day after arriving there she was taken very ill and grew gradually worse until death came to relieve her suffering. All that medical skill and loving hands could do for her was done, but to no avail. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon in the Christian church, conducted by Rev Snodgrass and interment was in Memory cemetery.

Margaret Childears, daughter of Thomas and Amanda Childears was born near Lewistown, Fulton county, Ill., Sept 5th, 1847 and died at New Market, Iowa, Nov 14th 1920, aged 73 years, 2 months and 9 days. She was married to Ruben Anderson in 1865, and to this union was born four children. Her husband having died in 1873. She was married to James Anderson in 1875. To this union was born two children. She has lived a devoted Christian for forty years.She being a member of the Christian church of New Market at time of death. While not being able to attend church in later years, she did not forget her Master and in her four weeks of intense suffering expressed her willingness to go, that she was ever ready. It can be truly said that she was a loving, kind hearted mother, nothing being too great a task for her to undertake for her family. She would always look on the bright side and meet every one with a smile, a smile that is cherished and impressed upon the memory of her children and relatives for ever. She leaves to mourn her aged husband and five children, all of whom administered to her during her illness and who were at her bedside when the summons came. One daughter, Clara A. preceded her to the better world in 1902. Those living are Chas E. Anderson of York, Neb., Nancy E. White of Washington, Kans., Ruben R. and Edgar Anderson and Ella Maxwell of New Market, 19 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

Anderson, Ross - Ross Anderson, youngest son of Mr and Mrs Major Anderson of New Market, died very suddenly Wednesday night at the home of a distant relative John Martin, at Quitman, Mo., aged 20 years. The funeral was held at the home Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Rev Dezell of the Methodist church conducting the services with burial services conducted at the Old Memory cemetery at New Market.

He had gone down to Skidmore [Missouri] and there was taken sick very suddenly. He was taken by car in order that he might return home, but life was too short after they started for him to be brought back to New Market, and he had to be taken to Quitman [Missouri] where he passed away. His death was found to have resulted from acute indigestion.

Besides his parents he leaves to survive him his young wife, daughter of A.P. Kent, who is known well around Clarinda as Gladys Kent before marriage, and several brothers and sisters and other relatives.

Henry Ross Anderson was born in New Market, Iowa, Aug14, 1903, and departed this life July 16, 1924, aged 20 years, 11 months and 2 days. He was married to Miss Gladys Kent in Bedford on Dec 15, 1923. He was a faithful member of the Christian church. The family has the sympathy of the entire community in their bereavement. Obituary - Eugene L. Bailie, 59, of rural New Market died at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital early Sunday morning where he had been a patient since Thursday.

He was born Feb 5, 1911, near Sheridan, Mo, the son of Lewis and Maude Weir Bailie. He lived six miles north of New Market where he farmed and worked for Taylor County.

On April 29, 1939 he was married to Lenore Dunbar at Savannah, Mo. Besides his wife of the home he is survived by one son Richard of Ft Dodge, and three daughters Marilyn of Des Moines, Judy of Omaha and Janet, who is a student at Peru, Neb, and one brother, William of Bedford.

Funeral services will be held at the Walker Funeral Home at 2 pm Tuesday with Loren Daly of the New Market Church of Christ officiating. Music will be provided by Shirley Larson and Lois Moore. Casket bearers will be Jim McAlpin, Max MacAlpin, Welden Jones, John Wilmes, Floyd Jobe, and Milo Whitehead.

Burial will be in the Memory cemetery, near New Market. Clarinda Herald Journal

Bean, Evelyn - Evelyn Bernice Bean was born in Taylor county, Ia., June 17, 1913 and passed away at her home east of New Market, at 6 am Feb 7, 1920.

She was next to the youngest daughter of John B. and Lucy J. Bean. Besides her father and mother she leaves to mourn her loss 3 sisters and 4 brothers, Mrs Clara O'Dell, Hobart, Earl, John, Dan, Lizzie and Pansy Bean all of New Market, all living at home except Mrs O'Dell. Besides these she leaves a little nephew and other relatives and friends.

She took her bed just 4 days before she passed away. She was always kind and patient and leaves a vacant place in her home which can never be filled, but Jesus said, "Suffer the little children to come unto me and forbid them not for of such is the kingdom of heaven."

Short funeral services were conducted Sunday by Rev Fields at the Memory cemetery, where the remains were laid to rest. New Market Herald, Feb 12, 1920

Obituary - Funeral services for Mrs Daisy E. Bennett, 88, of New Market were held Sunday afternoon from Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Rev. Ron Blix officiating.

Mrs Bennett died Thursday afternoon at the Municipal hospital following a short illness.

She was born March 20, 1890, at Leon, the daughter of Isaac and Ellen Evans Stanford. She was married to E.C. (Cap) Bennett in 1908. Mr Bennett preceded her in death on April 13, 1978.

Three children survive: Ellary Bennett of St Joseph, Mo., Mrs Roy (Louise) Johnson of Burkburnett, Texas, and Mrs Tom (Audrey) Hayes of New Market. There are 9 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, and 24 great-great-grandchildren.

Ralph Stanford of Leon is a brother.

Rosevelyn Bashor was soloist and Zella Ridenour organist. Casket bearers were Franklin Chase, Paul Depew, Lorence Hanson, Paul Golding, Ralph Bordon, and Raymond Moore.

Burial was in Memory cemetery at New Market.

Obituary - E.C. (Cap) Bennett, 85 of New Market died Thursday evening at Goldenrod Manor following a long illness.

He was born May 22, 1892, at Leon, Iowa the son of Hiram and Clara Holland Bennett. On August 12, 1908 he was married to Daisy Stanford who survives. The family moved to this area and farmed until retirement when they moved into New Market.

Besides his wife of the home, Mr Bennett is survived by three children: Ellary Bennett, St Joseph, Mo., Mrs Roy (Louise) Johnson, Burkburnett, Texas, and Mrs Tom (Audrey) Hayes, New Market. There are 9 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and 24 great grandchildren. Sisters are Lilly Smith and Opal Smith of Leon, Iowa.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Rev. Ron Blix officiating. Rosevelyn Bashor was soloist and Zella Ridenour organist. Casket berarers were: Vanzo Drennen, Albert Radke, Orville Ridenour, Paul Depew, Eldon Fine, and Ed Glidden.

Burial was in Memory Cemetery at New Market.

Obituary - Miss Janette Benson passed away at the home of her mother Saturday morning, after a lingering illness from cancer. She suffered greatly from the ravages of this dread disease, but during it all she never complained. Everything possible was done to ease her suffering until the final dissolution came and she was at rest with her master.

Services were held in the M.E. church Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev Penn. Interment was in Memory cemetery.

Janette E. daughter of John and Almira E. Benson was born in Washington Co., Iowa, August 18, 1859. Came with her parents to Page Co., in 1880. The family moved to New Market in 1904, where she made her home until her death, which occurred on the early morning of January 15, 1921, at the age of 61 years, 4 months and 28 days. She was converted and united with the M.E. church in Washington Co., Iowa, when 14 years of age and lived and died in the faith of the gospel. Obituary - William Benson an old and respected citizen of this community, passed away Sunday evening at his home in New Market after a lingering illness with Bright's disease.

Funeral services were held Wednesday morning in the M.E. church, conducted by the pastor, and interment was in Memory cemetery.

William Ephram Benson was born in Washington county, Iowa, July 16, 1864 and departed this life June 6, 1920, aged 55 years, 10 months and 6 days.

When a boy he gave his heart to God, and joined the Methodist church at the age of 14 years.

On December 13, 1888, he was married to Miss Florrie Wilson. Into their home were born five children, four of whom together with their mother survive him. His own mother and several brothers and sisters are also living. Mr Benson will be missed not only by his family but by a large circle of friends. New Market Herald June 10, 1920

Obituary - Funeral services for Mrs Osie M. Berger, 90 of New Market will be at 2 p.m., Thursday at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Rev William VanDam officiating.

The family will meet friends at the funeral home from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday evening.

Mrs Berger died Sunday evening at Bethesda Care Center where she had been a patient for the past seven months.

She was born June 21, 1889, at New Market, the daughter of Burr H. and Lucretia Painter Combs. In 1921 she was married to Gail Berger who preceded her in death.

Mrs Berger was the last member of a family of eight children: being preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs D.E. (Oreana) Taylor, Clarinda, three grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and 10 great great grandchildren. There are several nieces and nephews.

Burial will be in Memory Cemetery at New Market.

Obituary - Carrie E. Borden, 91, a long time resident of New Market, died at a Hospital in Red Oak, at 4:30 pm Sunday following a long illness.

She was the daughter of the late Jasper and Annie Marshall Manley, and was born in Buchanan county, Mo.

She was the widow of the late Homer Borden, who died in June 1959. She made her home at the Good Samaritan Rest Home at Red Oak about five years ago, and was taken to the hospital a week ago.

She is survived by five children: Mrs Hazel Gant, New Market; Elbert Borden, Shenandoah; Mrs Edna Wills, Kansas City, Mo; Ralph Borden, New Market; and Frank Borden, Salem, Oregon. She is also survived by a sister, Mrs Emma Stipe, Los Angeles, three grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted from the Walker Funeral Home at 2 pm Wednesday with Rev George White in charge. Organist will be Aletha L. Hutchings and burial will be in Memory cemetery near New Market.

Obituary - Elbert G. Borden, 69, died at his home in Shenandoah Sunday morning. He had lived in Shenandoah for the past two years where he owned and managed an apartment house. Before going to Shenandoah he had been in the New Market area all his life.

Funeral services for Mr Borden will be at 2 pm, Wednesday at Walker Funeral Home. Burial will be at Memory Cemetery near New Market. Mr Borden was born April 21, 1903, near New Market, the son of Homer and Carrie Manley Borden. He was married to Edith Taylor who died in 1954. Later he was married to Lettie Lintner, she died in 1971.

He is survived by two sons: Marvin J. Borden of Underwood, Ia, and Milo G. Borden of Millard, Neb. There are five grandchildren. Brothers are Ralph of New Market and Frank of Salem, Ore, and sisters are Mrs Hazel Gant, New Market, and Mrs Edna Wills of Kansas City, Mo. Clarinda Herald Journal

Obituary - Ralph Borden, age 93, of Clarinda, Iowa, formerly of New Market, Iowa, died Saturday, February 2, 2002, at the Clarinda Regional Health Center. Ralph had resided at the Eiler House, Clarinda, Iowa since September 1, 2001. Funeral services were held at 10:30 am, Tuesday, February 5, 2002, at Walker-Merrick Fuenral Home, Clarinda, with Rev Dan Wiebesiek and Rev John Clark officiating. Burial was in the Memory Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the New Market Methodist Church, First Christian Church, First Christian Church, Clarinda, Iowa or the Taylor County Historical Museum.

Ralph R. Borden was born in Page County on a farm four miles southwest of New Market, Iowa, October 27, 1908, to William H. Borden and Carrie Manley Borden. Ralph was a graduate of New Market High School and received a scholarship to go to college in Des Moines, Iowa. On December 20, 1930, he was united in marriage to Gladys M. Guenther at Maryville, Missouri. They farmed south of New Market. Ralph raised purebred Shorthorn cattle which he showed and sold in Iowa and Missouri. He was a member of the New Market Methodist Church. Ralph was past president of the New Market Telephone Company. Ralph was a very loving care giver to many family members and friends.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Gladys, March 4, 1992; brother, Elbert Borden; sisters, Hazel Gant and Edna Wills.

Obituary - Mrs Vesta Borin, 77, of Midwest City, Okla, died Tuesday morning at a rest home there where she had made her home for five years.

A resident of Erick, Okla, she had moved to Midwest city to be near her daughter Mrs Delores Puthuff. She was born Jan 3, 1894 at New Market, the daughter of Elihu and Josephine Brewer Cade. In 1922 the family moved to Oklahoma where her husband, Alva Jones was in the furniture and undertaking business, before dieing in 1935. Later she was married to Charles Borin of Erick, Okla, who preceded her in death.

Besides her daughter she is survived by a brother, Raymond Cade of Des Moines, and two sisters, Mrs Harry Harland of New Market, and Mrs Ward McCreary of Des Moines.

Funeral services were held this Thursday morning at the Walker Funeral Home with Loren Daly officiating. Music was by Mrs Shirley Larson and Doris Damewood. Casket bearers were Keith Luellen, Verlin Cade, Doyle Cooper, Leslie Roush, Russell Slack, and Merle Harland.

Obituary - Albert Lyle Bramble, the oldest child of Lawrence and Elizabeth Bramble, was born west of Clarinda June 14, 1923, and died at the home of his parents south of New Market Sept 16, 1940, at the age of 17 years, 3 months and 2 days. Lyle attended the Page county rural schools. Since then he had been at home and worked as a hand for neighbors in the community. He was a clean and wholesome boy, willing and ready to assist wherever his help need be. Although Lyle was never affiliated with any church, he enjoyed attending Sunday school and church. He was able-bodied until April when his illness began. He entered the hospital in Iowa City in April and again in May but all help of physicians and medicine was to no avail. Lyle gave up 5 weeks ago, but never troubled his family with his ailments but shouldered the burden quietly to save his parents the worry he knew it would cause.

One infant brother preceded him to another world two years ago and he leaves his parents, Mr and Mrs Lawrence Bramble, 4 brothers, Charles, Paul, Richard, and Carroll, 3 sisters, Marie, Joyce, and Joan. His grandparents are Mr and Mrs Roy Bramble of Clarinda and Mr and Mrs Ben Welch of College Springs. One great grandmother, Mrs Mary Orme, of Clarinda, many uncles, aunts, and cousins and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held from the Walker funeral home Wednesday, Sept 18, at 2 pm, conducted by Rev T.J. Overholt of New Market. Interment was made at the Old Memory cemetery. A mixed quartet, consisting of Doyle Hicks, Bessie Godfrey, Opal Wallace and Edd Owens, did the singing. The casket bearers were Clarence Rucker, James Welch, Dano Welch, Ralph Welch, Ernest Bramble, and Eldon Fine.

Obituary - Mrs Isabelle Bramble, widow of the late James Bramble, passed to the great beyond on Saturday, Aug 26, after an illness lasting less than two hours. She had been in her usual good health up until noon of the fatal day, but immediately after dinner she was taken ill and in spite of medical skill, death claimed her for his own.

For more than fifty years she has been a resident of this community and was respected by all who knew her. She was a devout christian, a splendid wife and mother. Her death will be sincerely mourned by the older residents.

Funeral services were held at her late home Tuesday afternoon, Aug 29th, conducted by Rev E.S. Menoher of Villisca, and interment was in Memory cemetery.

Isabelle Cobb was the daughter of John and Rebecca Cobb and was born at Manchester, Ohio, Feb 22, 1846. Died at New Market Saturday, Aug 26, 1922, aged 76 years, 6 months and 4 days.

On the 14th day of Feb 1866, she was united in matrimony to James F. Bramble at Manchester, Ohio. They went to Laselle Co., Illinois, and lived until 1870, then emigrated to Taylor county, Ia., and settled on the farm 1 1/2 miles northeast of New Market where they lived 44 years, then moved to her late home in New Market. She was the mother of five children, one of whom, Ada Glassgow, preceded her mother to eternity in 1916. Her husband passed away Feb 2, 1922.

She united with the M.E. church when quite young and remained faightul till the last.

She leaves to mourn her loss, Mrs Elizabeth Fisher of Page county, Mrs Bertha Dougherty of New Market, Roy G. Bramble of Coin, Ia., Mrs Pearl Orme of New Market, 12 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. New Market Herald, Sept 7, 1922

Obituary - James Bramble, an old and highly respected citizen of this community passed to his great reward last Thursday. He had been in failing health for some time and for the past month had been confined to his bed. He was a good citizen, kind neighbor and an indulgent husband and father.

During the civil war he responded to the call of his country with valor and distinction to the end of the war.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon in the M.E. church, conducted by Rev J. Owen Smith. His comrades of the G.A.R. and American Legion attended in a body and paid tribute to the memory of their fallen comrade. Interment was in Memory cemetery.

James Francis Bramble was born at Ripley, Ohio, Sept 6, 1839, where he grew to young manhood, then moved with his parents to Marsailles, Illinois, where in July, 1861, he enlisted in the 104th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry and served during the war.

On the 14th day of Feb., 1866, he was united in matrimony to Isabell Cobb at Manchester, Ohio, and in the summer of 1870 emigrated to Taylor county, Iowa, and located on the farm two and one half miles northeast of New Market, where he resided for 44 years, then removed to his late home in New Market.

To this union were born five children, one of whom, Ada Glasgow, preceded her father to eternity in 1916.

At the age of 17 he confessed faith in Jesus Christ as his Savior and united with the Methodist Episcopal church near Marsailles, Ill. He was a pioneer of the New Market M.E. church, being one of the building committee and president of the board of trustees for 20 years also a steward in the church for many years. It can be said of brother James Bramble that he kept the faith and finished his course in the communion of the church until he was called to the church triumphant.

He was a member of Upton Post G.A.R., New Market, Ia.

He departed this life at his late home in New Market Feb 2, 1922 following an illness of four weeks, aged 82 yrs, 4 months and 27 days. He leaves to mourn their loss his wife, Mrs James Bramble and four children: Mrs Elizabeth Fisher, of Page County, Iowa, and Mrs Bertha Dougherty of New Market, Ia., Mrs Pearl Orme of New Market Ia., and Roy G. Obituary - Lawrence G. Bramble, 67, Essex constable for many years, died Wednesday morning at the Municipal Hospital after declining health for a year and half.

Funeral services are to be Friday. The body is to lie in state at the Carson-Hackett Funeral Home in Essex from Friday afternoon until taken to the Hackett Funeral Home in Shenandoah for the service at 2 pm Sunday. Burial is to be in Old Memory Cemetery at New Market.

The Rev Walter W. Miller of Shenandoah will be officiating minister for the services. Vocalists will be Jim, Joe and John Bengtson with Mrs Sam Bengtson as organist. The flowers will be cared for by Mr and Mrs Donald Moore and Mr and Mrs Marlen Carlson. Mrs French Lewis will be at the memory register.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, at the Essex home, four sons, Charles and Richard, both of Clarinda; Paul, Rock Port, Mo; Carroll, Belleville, Ill, and three daughters, Mrs Robert (Marie) Smith and Mrs Ernest (Joyce) Anderson, both of Essex and Mrs Melvin (Joann) Woehlert, Portland, Ore.

Born near New Market, Lawrence Bramble lived the greater part of his life in Page County where he first farmed and then was employed by the town of Essex for 24 years. Clarinda Herald-Journal

Obituary - Having passed the allotted age of threee score years and ten, James C. Brooks passed to his reward on Friday, Dec 28th, at his home on E. Logan Street, Clarinda, aged 91 years, 9 months and 27 days. The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, being from the home, conducted by the Methodist pastor, Rev Alfred T. Bishop D.D., interment in Old Memory Cemetery near New Market.

James C. Brooks was born March 1st, 1832, at North Somercortes, England. He came to this country in 1852 stopping first in England [perhaps means Canada?], but later coming to the U.S. where he has since been a citizen. Before coming over, he was baptized in the Church of England. He was united in marriage to Phoebe Arnold, at Benton, Ohio, May 10th, 1860. Of their six sons and four daughters, seven children are still living, three daughters, Mrs Clara Davison, Mrs Allen Davison and Mrs Nellie Carmichael, also four sons, Willis, Smith, Rome and Albert Brooks, all living not far from Clarinda or New Market. His wife is also left to mourn his death, with sixteen grand children, sixteen great grandchildren, and a host of friends, who have known Mr Brooks as one of our old and respected citizens. Obituary- Mrs Violet Faye Brooks, 82, of Zillah, Wa, died Saturday at St Elizabeth Hospital, Yakima, Wa.

She was born to James Henry and Nancy Ann McKinley June 28, 1897, in New Market, and lived in the Yakima Valley the last 16 years. She was a homemaker most of her life and was a member of the Zillah Nazarene Church.

Mrs Brooks is survived by two sons, Franklin E. McNutt, of Anchorage, Ak, and James R. Brooks, of New Market; five daughters, Mrs Edye Palmer of Seattle, Mrs Cleo Snyder of Zillah, Mrs Mildred Barlow of Anchorage, Ak, Mrs Florence Goar of Boise, Id, and Mrs Winifred Combs of Vancouver; one step-daughter, Mrs Helen Baker of Grant City, Mo; 17 grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ernest McNutt; her second husband, William R. Brooks; and a step-daughter, Mrs Gladys Tyus.

Funeral services were at 2 pm Tuesday at the Zillah Nazarene Church, with the Rev Richard Salisbury officiating.

Graveside services will be at 3:30 pm, Friday at Memory cemetery at New Market with Rev Jim Means officiating.

Walker-Merrick Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Obituary - Funeral services for Chick Brown, 80 of New Market will be at 10 am, Wednesday at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Jon Palmquist officiating.

Mr Brown died at his New Market home Sunday night.

He was born May 28, 1899, at Canton, Ill, the son of Henry and Clara Worrell Brown. On Aug 10, 1924, he was married to Dorothy Hargis who survives.

Mr Brown was a retired farmer having worked at other jobs since he left the farm.

Besides his wife he is survived by four children; Clifford Eugene Brown, Ephrata, Wa, Charles Adrian Brown, Vancouver, Wa, Betty Joan Cox, New Market, and Billy Dean Brown, Weeping Water, Ne. There are seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Robert Brown of Conway is a brother. Sisters are Alena Pace, New Market, Alice Preeo, and Bertha Stiles of Stockton, Ca.

He was preceded in death by an infant child, one sister, and two brothers.

Burial will be in Memory Cemetery at New Market.

Obituary - Francis Marion Brown, an honored and respected citizen of Taylor county, Iowa, was born in Washington county, Indiana, December 15, 1842, and died at his home in New Market, Iowa, November 3, 1924, at the age of 81 years, 10 months, and 18 days.

He came to Iowa with his parents to Agency City, near Ottumwa, in the autumn of 1850 by ox team.

In the year 1866 he was married to Susan Emily Schively in Selma, Van Buren county, Iowa. She survives him. To this union were born eleven children, Ida M., Oscar G., Francis Marion, William S., Jessie L., Gracie A., Gladys M., and Harry R., who also survive him and were present during his last illness. Daisy, Charles Wilbur and Harley Thomas, preceded their father to the great eyond.

He is also survived by three brothers, James Brown, Stephen Brown, of Clarinda, Iowa, and Wise Brown, of Page county, Iowa, nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

He came to Page county, Iowa, in 1869. Here he resided two years. He then moved to Taylor county, Iowa, and has resided here continuously until his death.

Mr Brown was a patriot, having enlisted in the Union Army August 13, 1862, at Keokuk, Iowa, in Company A, 19th Iowa Infantry, and served throughout the war, having been engaged in many important battles. He was an honored member of the Grand Army of the Republic, having served as Adjutant of Upton Post No. 248, New Market, Iowa, many years.

He was converted to Christ in early manhood, uniting with the Methodist Episcopal church, and has lived a consistent christian life until the end.

He will be greatly missed by his faithful and loving companion, who has shared his joys and sorrows through the many years of wedded life. He was a kind and loving father, an obliging neighbor and a good citizen, respected by all who knew him. He is gone. Peace with his ashes rest.

Obituary - Jesse Leroy Brown, 91, a native of New Market, died of a heart attack while visiting downtown Wednesday afternoon. He fell at intersection of highway 2 and street leading to the business district.

Born August 23, 1879 to F.M. and Susan S. Brown, he lived all his life in the New Market area.

The last of ten children he was well known in the western Taylor county town for his keen memory despite his age.

The New Market rescue unit rushed him to the Clarinda hospital but he was dead on arrival.

Funeral services are at 2 pm Saturday at the Shum Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford. Burial is in Memory Cemetery at New Market.

He had been living with his niece and family, the Larry Eighmy's, south of New Market.

Obituary - William Browning was born June 17, 1856, in Gargood, GlaMorgan Shire, South Wales. Mr Browning departed this life at Shannon City, Iowa, on March 3, 1924, aged 67 years, 8 months, 15 days. When a boy with his parents he immigrated to this country in 1871 and located in Pennsylvania; later they moved to Mahashka [sic] county, Iowa, and was united in marriage to Louisa Catherine Wortman, Aug 19th, 1880. Mrs Browning preceded her husband in death, October 3, 1922. To this union was born five children, George Browning of Edmunds, North Dakota, Rosswell Browning of Maple Hill, Iowa, Margaret Estel of Shannon City, Iowa, Emma Browning, who made her home with her father at Shannon City, and William Browning, Junior, who was killed in his father's coal mine at New Market, in 1900.

All were present, with the exception of Mr George Browning of North Dakota.

Mr Browning was one of a family of twelve children, all of whom have passed to the Great Beyond but three sisters; Mrs Robert McMarran of Oskaloosa, Mrs Joseph Reynolds, and Mrs John Reynolds, of Albia, Iowa. Two of the sisters were present at the funeral.

At an early age he engaged in the occupation of a miner and followed the same until a few years prior to his death, having owned and operated the coal mine that is now known as Pullan Coal Co., east of New Market.

In early youth he was led to believe in Christ and the church and being a great lover of music and song his greatest joy was to sing the songs of praise of his Christ and Lord in his home as well as in public services; until he was called to his reward in his last illness. He always had maintained a living faith in the Christ he loved.

Services were conducted from the Methodist church in Shannon City, by his pastor, Carl Brown, Wednesday afternoon, March 5th, and the remains were shipped to New Market on Thursday, March 6th, where services were held in the M.E. church at 1:30 pm; Rev Menoher of Corning, his former pastor, conducting the services. Obituary - Saturday morning, Oct 21st, a little daughter was born to Mr and Mrs LeRoy Bundy. The little one was christened Lauretta Helen and the world seemed bright for her and the adoring parents. But on Sunday the little one was taken sick and despite all that mortal hands could do the grim destroyer placed its stamp upon her, and on Monday at about eleven o'clock, the little life which had flutttered for so brief a time about the hearth of the doting parents, took its flight to Him who gave it. And now the home into which the coming of the little stranger had promised so much joy, is overcast with darkness and sorrow. Mere words at a time like this mean but little, but in their hour of sadness the sincere sympathy of all go out to the bereaved parents.

Obituary - Mrs Arthur (Effie) Burley, 81, who formerly lived in the area southwest of New Market, died Wednesday morning at West Heights Manor in Clarinda where she had been making her home since July 29.

Services are pending, the arrangements being made at Walker Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memory Cemetery at New Market.

Mrs Burley had moved to Clarinda soon after the death of Mr Burley. The home being at 214 South 17th St. She was formerly Effie White, born on Sept 10, 1889. She was married in 1909, and Mr Burley died May 25, 1969. Their only son, Floyd of Bedford, had died in March 1969 following an extended illness. Clarinda Herald Journal
