Daggett, Janette Arlene Donaldson -
Janette Arlene Daggett, 63, died of heart failure on April 18, 2000, at her home in
Duluth, Ga. Janette was born on Nov. 12, 1936 to Robert and Mildred Grimm Donaldson
near Sharpsburg, Iowa. She was a graduate of Lenox High School, where she was best
remembered for her excellence in basketball.
On Oct. 1 ,1955, she was married in the Little Brown Church to Bradford I. Daggett of
Prescott. After their marriage they lived a short time in Prescott, where Brad worked for
D.M. Green Hardware. For Brad to further his college education they moved to New York
\City, where Janette worked as a receptionist for the Continental Can
Company. As Brad's career advanced they moved from New York City to Kansas City, then
to Washington D.C., Pittsburgh and finally to Atlanta.
Janette made lasting friendships everywhere she lived and always seemed to find the
bright side of everything she did. She was an inspiration to so many. Janette was a member
of the nation's largest Presbyterian Church, the Peachtree Presbyterian Church of Atlanta,
where she served for a number of years as a greeter of new members. At the time of her
death she was working as a greeter for the Sweet Tomatoes Restaurant Duluth, Georgia,
bringing a welcome greeting to their daily customers.
Their marriage was blessed with two children, son Michael Daggett of Duluth and their
daughter Cheryl O'Brien of Lawrenceville, Ga. They were also blessed with two
grandchildren, Dillon and Darcie O'Brien of Lawrenceville.
Janette is survived by her husband Brad; her son Michael of Duluth; and her daughter
Cheryl, son-in-law Kevin, and grandchildren Dillon
and Darcie O'Brien of Lawrenceville; her mother Mildred; her brother Donald and
his wife Betty of Sharpsburg; brother-in-law Max Daggett and his wife Doris of Des
Moines; and sister-in-law Ruth Daggett of Creston.
There are many nieces and nephews in the immediate family. They include Craig and
Becky Donaldson with their children Deanna and Chelsie; John and Sandra Donaldson
with their children, Emalie and Samuel; David and Donette Bush; Dennis and Cindy
Daggett with their children Justin, Joshua, Jordon and Jeremy; Lon and Debbie
Soukup with their children Jaci, Lori and Seth; Doug and Ellen Daggett with
their children Clayton, Krystal and Bryanna.
Her father, Robert and brother-in-law Horace Daggett preceded her in death.
A memorial service will be held in Lenox in early summer.

Ewalt, Marjorie Isabelle Wittwer -
Marjorie Isabelle Ewalt was born Sept. 8, 1915 at Glenwood, Minn.. She was the
daughter of Edgar and Florence Wuest Wittwer.
She passed away on April 8, 2000 in Clearfield at the age of 84.
Marjorie graduated from High School and went on to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester,
Minn. where she earned a degree as a Registered Nurse in 1939. She would make
health care her lifelong career; she worked several years at the Ringgold County
Hospital in Mount Ayr. She had lived near Clearfield since 1949. The past 25
years she had spent winter time in Texas.
Marjorie was married to Jack Gerlach, Millard "Bill" Ewalt, Sam Hanson and
Charles Dinwiddie.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husbands Jack, Bill and Charles.
Left to mourn her passing are her children Jerry Ewalt and wife Pat of Clearfield;
Jay Ewalt of Liberal, Kansas; 9 grandchildren, Frank! Staton and husband Bill, Chadler
and Amanda Colgan, Chris Ewalt, Jayme Applebee and husband Gordon, Larry "Nicky"
Wittwer, Jr., Lisa Pitlick and husband Lance, Lee Wittwer and wife Laura and Lucas
Wittwer; 5 great grandchildren, Cody and Jared Staton, Austin and Andrew Applebee
and Rem Pitlick; a special nephew Larry Wittwer and wife Linda of Eagan, MN; one brother
LeRoy Wittwer of Glenwood, MN; two sisters Laverne Philpot and husband Harry of
Lawrenceburg, TN and Ione Olson of Grand Forks, MN; nieces, nephews and friends.
Memorial services were held April 12, 2000 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist
Church in Clearfield with the Rev. Alan Rusk officiating. Music was provided by
Maralene Longfellow and Kathy Nelson. Honorary pallbearers were Franki Staton,
Amanda Colgan, Jayme Applebee, Lisa Pitlick, Chad Colgan, Chris Ewalt, Nicky
Wittwer, Lee Wittwer and Lucas Wittwer.

Ferguson, Thomas Claire -
Funeral services for Thomas Claire Ferguson of 2208 Prospect Ave., West
Des Moines, Iowa, were held Friday, April 7, 2000 at the West Des Moines
United Methodist Church with burial at Resthaven Cemetery.
Tom was born on a farm south of Lenox. He attended rural schools and
graduated from the Lenox High School in 1958.
After graduating from AIB in Des Moines he worked for Farmland Insurance
Company for 35 years. He retired from their finance department in 1997.
Growing up he was very active in the Calvary Go Getters 4H Club. As a young
man he was active in the Des Moines
Jaycees. At the time of his death, he belonged to the Iowa Polio Survivors
Group and was on the Board of Directors at Izaak Walton.
Tom entered the hospital, March 26, where they found cancer throughout his
body. He died a week later at Hospice Kavanah House.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara; two daughters, Lori Whitehead and Cindi
Ferguson, and a son-in-law, Doug Whitehead all of West Des Moines, and a
sister Sarah Stephens, her husband Dale of Scranton, four nieces, along with
a host of friends.
Memorial contributions may be made to Iowa Polio Survivors Group or
Hospice of Central Iowa.

Frame, Floyd F -
Floyd F. Frame 94, son of Clarence M. and Mary Overmire Frame was born Nov.
6, 1905 in Taylor County, Iowa and departed this life on April 10, 2000 at
Clearview Nursing Home in Clearfield
He married Zelda Monk on July 29, 1925 in Bedford, Iowa. They lived in
Diagonal, Iowa where he worked on the Burlington Railroad.
In 1936 he rented and later bought a farm northwest of Clearfield. He lived
there until October 1997 at which time he entered the Clearview Home in
Clearfield.
He was a good provider and took pride in keeping his farm and crops looking
nice.
Floyd and Zelda both enjoyed family, especially his grandchildren and also
enjoyed fishing.
He is survived by three sons, Floyd Jr. and wife Gloria of Fort Collins, Colo.
Marvin and wife Martha of Pahrump, Nevada and Dean and wife Deanna of
Ankeny, Iowa; two daughters, Donna and husband Harold Hancock of Bedford
and Janice and husband Ron Rogers of Lenox; 16 grandchildren, 25 great
grandchildren and 1 great great step granddaughter and a brother-in-law
Don Monk of Las Vegas.
Floyd was preceded in death by his parents, wife Zelda, two grandchildren,
two sisters and three brothers.
Services were held on Friday, April 14, 2000 at 10:30 am at the United
Methodist in Clearfield Iowa with the Rev. Alan Rusk officiating.
Music was provided by Maralene Longfellow and Kathy Nelson.
Casketbearers were Kyle Frame, Wayne Frame, Brian Rogers, Dan Hancock,
Doyle Hancock, and Darin Hancock.
Burial was in the West Fairview Cemetery at Lenox, Iowa.

Funeral services for Jean M Miller, age 72, of rural Lenox were held May 24,
2000, at the United Methodist Church in Lenox with Rev. Al Rusk officiating.
Interment was in West Fairview Cemetery, Lenox. Casket bearers were Travis
Garey, Bob Nixon, Tim Fehrle, Melvin Konfrst, Justin Miller, Mike Miller, Scott
Miller and Dennis Nelson.

Jean M. Miller, daughter of Ralph Edgar and Elsie Mae Wilmeth Miller was born
Dec. 24, 1927 in Union County, Iowa.
She entered into rest on May 21, 2000, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des
Moines, at the age of 72 years, 4 months and 10 days.
Jean grew up in the Prescott area and graduated from Prescott High School in
1946. She worked in the Creston and Des Moines area until she was united in
marriage to Donald Dean Miller on Feb. 24, 1950. They had four children. Jean and
Donald made their home in Afton until 1961 when they moved to Lenox.
Jean was active in Order of Eastern Star and twice served as Worthy Matron of
Salome Chapter 264. She enjoyed her grandchildren, going to the Iowa State
Fair, and playing cards and marbles.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Margaret and Gladys; sister-
in-law Glenna Miller; brothers-in-law Roy Kilgore, Maurice Porter, and Lyle Nelson;
and daughter-in-law Cindy Miller.
Jean is survived by her four children, daughter Jolene (husband Randy) Garey of
Manson, Iowa, and sons Randy (wife Jackie) Miller of Sharpsburg, Dan (wife Sandy)
Miller of Creston, and David Miller of Claremore, Okla.; six grandchildren, Angela
Miller, Jennifer Miller, Justin Miller, Rachel Miller, Tammy Garey, and Travis Garey;
a stepgrandchild, Tim Fehrle; one great-grandchild, Jake McKenna Slatten-Miller;
her brother, Francis Miller of Des Moines; her sisters, Irene Nelson of Lenox and

Funeral services for Jade Guthrie Perez, age 19, of Creston, Iowa were held May 9
at the Powers Funeral Home in Creston with Rick Titus conducting services.
Jade was born May 8, 1980, in Fort Carson, Colo., to Larry Guthrie and Raeleen Smith.
He lived most of his life in the Creston and Lenox area. After battling cancer, he
passed away on Thursday, May 4, 2000, at University of Iowa Hospital.
Survivors include father, Larry Guthrie of Fairbanks, Alaska; mother Raeleen Smith
of Creston; Stepfather Juan (wife Patty) Perez of Lenox; maternal grandfather Max
(wife Julie) Smith of Creston; maternal grandmother Donna (husband Ron) Edwards of
Creston; paternal grandparents Al (Wife Dee) Guthrie of Grants, N.Mex.; great
grandmother Evelyn Conley of Creston; great grandparents Darrell (wife Pearl) Moore
of Creston; and sister Angle Perez of Creston.
Burial was in Graceland Cemetery in Creston.

Alice Rice, 70, of Creston died April 23, 2000, at the Greenfield Manor.
Survivors include her husband, Verlyn Rice of Creston; a son, Greg (wife Peggy) Rice
of Creston; a sister, Isabelle (husband Eldon) Jenkins of Lenox; and four grandchildren.
Services were held April 27 at Coen-Beaty Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Jeanne Groom
officiating. Burial was in Bohemian National Cemetery in Adams County.
Memorials may be directed to the Williamson American Legion, Greenfield Manor
or Bohemian National Cemetery.
Mrs. Rice was born August 20, 1929, in Orient to Earl and Charlsey (Clayton) Thompson.
She graduated from Creston High school in 1947. On August 31, 1948, she married
Verlyn Rice in Creston.
She was a homemaker and worked at Jefferson Developmental Center for several
years. She lived in Creston and Adams County most of her life. She was a member
of the Williamson American Legion Auxiliary, Prescott United church and Nevinville
Methodist Church and a former 4-H leader.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

Services for Pauline Sickels were held at United Methodist Church in Clearfield with
Rev. Alan Rusk officiating.
Casket bearers were Paul Herrmann, Jim Hanshaw, Clyde Spencer, Clifton Hanshaw,
Jason Hanshaw and Rex Wyckoff.
Music was provided by Mrs. Jean Huffman, organist.
Arrangements were by Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home.
Pauline Sickels was born March 10, 1922 at Clearfield, Iowa. She was the daughter
of Basil & Nellie (Soma) Herring. Pauline died at her home in Bedford, Iowa on
May 8, 2000.
Pauline grew up at Clearfield and graduated from Clearfield High School. She was
a proud member of the girls' basketball team. After high school she received her
teachers certificate from Maryville, Mo. and taught country school at
Werks country school.
On Feb. 16, 1944, she was united in marriage to Gene E. Sickels in Bedford and to
this union, five children were born, Betty Lou, Patricia Ann, William John, Alan Dean,
and Kathy Ilene. Pauline and Gene lived in El Paso, Texas and Wilmington, North
Carolina while he military and returned to Bedford around 1946. Together they
operated Sickels Appliance Store in Bedford until Gene's death in 1979.
Pauline always valued education and saw to it that her children went to college.
She also valued the classics and loved listening to various classical music. She
also loved sports, college basketball, the Iowa Hawkeyes, and Chicago Bulls.
She loved her home, garden, flowers, and making sure her yard was beautiful.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Gene, 2 children; Betty Lou
and Alan Dean; and two brothers Rupert and Donald Herring.
Left to cherish her memory are her children; Pat Herman and her husband Paul
of Wheaton, Ill., Bill Sickels of Iowa City, and Kathy Morris and her husband Jim
of Bedford, sister Hazel Price of Amarillo, Texas and brother, Roily Herring of
Clearfield, Iowa.

Stanley, Leona May Riley -
Funeral services for Leona May Riley Stanley were held Saturday May 20, at
Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Corning with Rev. Roy Cook officiating.
Interment was in Walnut Grove Cemetery, Corning. Memorial are to Iowa
Kidney Foundation and Diabetes Association.
Leona May Riley Stanley, daughter of Robert and Olive (Bovaird) Riley was
born July 16, 1919 at her parents' home near Lenox. She passed away May 19,
2000 at Titusville, Florida at the age of 80 years, 9 months and 27 days.
Leona grew up near Lenox. She attended Grant #3 and Lenox High School,
graduating in 1935 at the age of 15. She attended Creston Junior College
to receive her teaching certificate May 27, 1937.
Leona began teaching students at Grant No 9, Nodaway Consolidated and
at Greenfield when she was 18 years old. She met Carl Whittier Stanley
and they were married Feb. 17, 1940 in Missouri. They had four children.
Carl and Leona were privileged to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary
with family and friends in Washington, D.C. in 1990.
The family later moved to Colorado, where Leona returned to teaching in
Grand Junction and Longmont. She then completed her degree in education
at the University of Colorado in 1962. Leona then began working for the
Fairfax County, Virginia school system. Leona retired in June 1986. She
was inducted into Delta Kappa Gamma Society, an honor society for
educators, and remained a member until 1998 when she left Harrison burg,
Va., to live in Florida.
Following their retirements, Leona and Carl completed building a home in
1987 in the Massanutten Ski resort in Virginia. Leona remained in that home
through August 1998. At that time her health forced her to move to assisted
living in Titusville, Fla., close to son Doug and his family.
Leona was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Carl.
Leona is survived by her four children: Helen Diane (husband Gary) Werner
and Robert E. (wife Dora) Stanley, all of Denver, Colo.; Douglas C (wife Sharon)
Stanley of Titusville; Deborah Stanley Davidson of Charlotte, N.C.; her brother
Elvin (wife Eula May) Riley of Lenox; 10 grandchildren and five great-
grandchildren.

Stoaks, Donald James -
Donald James Stoaks, son of Andrew and Emily Lula (Mercer) Stoaks, was born
on February 5, 1930, in Taylor County, Iowa. He entered into Eternal Rest at the
VA Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, on April 12, 2000 at the age of 70 years, 2 months
and 7 days. He joined the US Army in January 1952 at Camp Stoneman, California,
and later was stationed in Korea from April 1952 through September 1953.
On December 29, 1954, he was united in marriage with Georgia L. Ferguson at the
Methodist Church in Lenox, Iowa. This marriage was blesses with the birth of
three children: Nancy, Stephanie and Steven.
As the couple settled into marriage, Don and Georgia were sent to Germany with
the US Army. They were stationed there from February 1955 through July
1957. During their stay in Germany, both Nancy and Stephanie were born. Upon
their return to the United States, Don and Georgia were blessed with a son,
Steven. Don resigned from the Army as a Sergeant B-6 with both the Good
Conduct Medal and the Army Occupation Medal (Germany). He was preceded in
death by his parents; one brother, Vernon; one sister Veldeva; and his loving
wife, Georgia. Those remaining to mourn Don's passing include his two
daughters: his son: his brother: 7 grandchildren; 2 greatgrandchildren; many
other relatives and numerous friends.
Don's daughter Nancy Colvin currently resides in Council Bluffs, IA. and has
two children: daughter Colette, son Joseph and his daughter Katie. Don's
daughter Stephanie Stultz and husband Steven also currently reside in Council
Bluffs, IA and have one child: daughter Sabrina and her son Justin. Don's son
Steven Stoaks with wife Cynthia currently reside in Phoenix, AZ and have four
children: daughters Leanne and Lynette and sons Gregory and Garrett Don's
brother, Marvin Stoaks currently resides in Clarinda, IA.
Donald James Stoaks will be remembered as a loving husband, a caring father
and a kind and honorable man with an affable personality that touched many.
Don was laid to rest Thursday, April 20, 2000 at 1:30 p.m. in the West Fairview
Cemetery in Lenox, IA with Audrey Westendorf officiating.
Casket bearers were Gregory Stoaks,. Joseph Colvin, Ron Stoaks, Steve Stultz,
Bob Mohr, and George Sweeney. Memorials were in his name.

Sweeney, Marjorie A Knoodle-
Marjorie A. Sweeney passed away at her home on April 3, 2000. She was 73.
Mrs. Sweeney, the daughter of Ralph Emerson and Mildred Lee (Alpaugh) Knodle
was born June 24, 1926 in Prescott. She attended Grant School No. 4 and
graduated from Lenox High School in 1943.
She was united in marriage to Francis William Sweeney in Des Moines on April
24, 1947. She taught country school for two years and was a homemaker.
She lived in rural Adams County until moving to Creston in 1999. She was a
member of the Stringtown Community Church and Adams County Genealogy
Society.
She is survived by her husband, F.W. "Bill" Sweeney of Creston; five children,
Alice Reed of Creston, Kevin (wife Debbie) Sweeney of Lenox, Shelly (husband
Mike) Pettit of Norwalk, Jon (wife Debbie) Sweeney of Prescott and Larry
(special friend Phyllis) Sweeney of West Des Moines; a daughter-in-law, Peggy
Sweeney of Creston, 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services were held April 6 at the Stringtown Community Church with the Rev.
Peter Brantner and the Rev. Roy Cook officiating.
Burial was in the North Fairview Cemetery at Lenox.

C. Elsby Tucker of the Clearview Home in Mount Ayr, formerly of Creston passed
away May 1, 2000 at the Clearview Home at the age of 86.
Mrs. Tucker, the daughter of James Roy and Willena May (Standley) Summerville,
was born October 26, 1913 in Adair County.
She was united in marriage to Charles Leslie Tucker in Creston on December 25,
1933. She was a housekeeper at Greater Community Hospital, retiring in 1975.
She resided in Adams and Adair counties and moved to Creston in 1957. She was
a member of the First Baptist Church and Meet Your Neighbor Club.
She is survived by a daughter, Norma Crittenden of Mounds, Oklahoma; two
sisters, Myma L. Dodge of Mount Ayr and Carrie A. Culpepper of Portsmouth,
Virginia; seven grandchildren; eight greatgrandchildren; and seven great great
grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husband in 1965, daughter Verda
Maxine Robison, four brothers, George, James, Robert and Hugh Summerville
and sister Shirley L. Mudlin.
Services were held May 4 at the Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Creston with the
Rev. Robert Sauser officiating. Burial was in the Carl Cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to the Clearview Home.
Wayne Crittenden of Clearfield is her grandson.

Varner, Franklin C (Clay) -
Franklin C. "Clay" Varner from Little Chute, Wis., age 88 died peacefully on
Saturday, March 18, 2000.
He was born August 10, 1911 in Delphos, Iowa, the son of the late Omer and
Nina (Stephens) Varner. He was educated in Delphos, graduating from high
school in 1928. He attended Simpson College and Iowa State Teachers
College, leaving school just one quarter short of graduation.
He interrupted his education several times in order to earn enough money to
continue and taught at schools in the area, including Knowlton. When he was
offered a job with the International Harvester Company he left school and
soon thereafter purchased Decorah Implement in Decorah, Iowa. Clay spent
the majority of his life in Decorah, working as a farm implement and truck
dealer until his retirement in 1981. Many happy years were spent in Green
Valley, Arizona before moving to Kaukauna, Wis. in 1992.
Clay married the former Lelah Hanson in 1939 and the couple had five
children; Ruth Schmitt of West Bend, Wis., Stephen Varner, Roanoke,
Virginia, John (deceased), Faye (Ed) Binsfeld, Little Chute, Wis., and
William (Patricia) of Tokyo, Japan.
He took great pride in his ten grandchildren and his six great grandchildren.
He is further survived by a brother, Alvin (Galene) Varner of Coronado, Cal.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lelah, his son, John, son-in-law
John Schmitt, his brothers, Charles, of Des Moines, John of Salt Lake City
and Paul of Clearfield.
It was Clay's wish to be cremated and a memorial service was held April 20
at the United Methodist Church in Decorah.

William M. Warin, of Mesa, Arizona, formerly of Mount Ayr passed away on
April 4, 2000 at his home in Arizona at the age of 56.
Bill, the son of Emmet and Pearl June (Matthews) Warin, was born April 1,
1944 in Creston. He was graduated from Mt Ayr High School in 1963 and
Iowa State Law School in 1968.
He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Ann Watson in Maloy on August 27,
1966.
He practiced law in Mount Ayr until 1981 and then in Mesa, Arizona. He was
former Ringgold County Attorney and member of St Bridget's Catholic Church
in Mesa, Arizona and National Network of Estate Planning Attorneys
He is survived by his wife, Ann of Mesa, mother Pearl Warin of Mount Ayr,
three daughters, Stephanie and husband Dr. Bradley Butler of Scottsdale,
AZ, Amy and husband Scott Haney and Jennifer and husband T.J. Casey of
Mesa, AZ; a brother Michael and wife Deanna Warin of Maloy; mother-in-law
Alberta Watson of Diagonal and two grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his father Emmet Warin and father-in-law
Elbert Watson.
Services were held April 10 at St Joseph Catholic Church in Mount Ayr
with the Rev. Thomas Dooley officiating.
Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery at Mount Ayr.

Darlene Mae Winslow, daughter of Roy and Edith (Jenkins) Leedom, was born
September 10, 1920 northeast of Lenox in Adams County, Iowa, and entered
into Eternal Rest on April 13, 2000 at the Greater Community Hospital in
Creston, at the age of 79 years, 6 months and 23 days.
At an early age Darlene was baptized at the Lenox Christian church where
she attended Sunday School and Church.
On January 29, 1937, Darlene was united in marriage to Paul Myron Winslow
in Coming, Iowa. Their entire married life was spent on the family
farm northeast of Sharpsburg, Iowa Three children blessed this union,
Connie Lou, Mary Naomi, and David Paul.
For many years Darlene worked side by side with Paul on the farm. After
the children were grown, Darlene worked as a nurses' aide at the
Lenox Care Center, until she retired.
Darlene attended the Methodist Church and was a current member of
the Lenox United Methodist Women.
Left to cherish Darlene are her three children: Connie Jensen, Mary
husband, Gail, Matheny, David Paul Winslow, all of Lenox, Iowa; seven
grandchildren: Marvin (wife Linda) Young, David (wife Becky) Snedeker,
Terri (husband Ron) Jennett, Mike (wife Rachel) Matheny, Tami (husband
Pete) Gray, Paul (wife Dana) Winslow, and Lucinda (husband Mike); Winslow-
Haidsiak; sixteen great grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 13 step
great-grandchildren; two brothers, Leonard Leedom, Misquite, Texas
and Edward Leedom, Newton, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Eldred Briear,
Burlington, Iowa, and Francis Leedom, Ukiah, CA.; one brother-in-law,
Gene Dale, Ukiah, CA.; many nieces and nephews and a host of other friends.
Services were Saturday April 15, 2000 at 1:30 p.m. at Coen-Beaty Funeral
Home in Lenox with Rev. Audrey Westendorf of the United Methodist Church.
Casket bearers were Dave Snedeker, Marvin Young, Mike Matheny, Paul
Winslow, Ron Jennett, Pete Gray, and Mike Haidsiak. Paula Sink was the
organist and soloists were Marvin Young and Mike Haidsiak.
Interment was in the North Fairview Cemetery in Lenox. Memorials to be
in her name.
