Brown, Darrel Stanley -
Funeral
services for Darrel S. Brown were held Wednesday, May 17, 1989 at the United
Methodist Church in Lenox, Iowa with Rev. Paul
Grandon officiating. Interment was at Stringtown Cemetery,
Adams County, Iowa.
Darrel
Stanley Brown was born July 29, 1915 at Witty, Mo. and passed away May 14, 1989
at the Creston Hospital of a heart attack.
He
was the son of Virgil S. Brown and Mary Doran Brown.
Darrel
attended school in Missouri in his early years and then moved with his parents
to the Cromwell, Iowa area in the fall of 1926 and finished school in Cromwell,
graduating from the Cromwell High School in 1933.
On
April 1, 1939, Darrel was united in marriage to Marie Burkhalter and had just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary the first week of April
this year.
This
union was blessed with two children, Carene Sullivan
and Roger Brown.
In
the early days of their marriage, Darrel held a variety of jobs and was a
welder at the shipyards in Vancouver, Wash. during 1942 and 1943. He and his
brother, Roscoe, formed the partnership of Brown Brothers in 1945 and did heavy
construction and land conservation work in Nebraska and Texas.
In
1952, Darrel and Marie moved to their farm northeast of Lenox where they farmed
until 1973 and then moved to Lenox. He then drove the Southern Iowa Trolley for
five years.
Darrel's
interests included fishing and camping, gardening, growing fruit trees and
enjoying his grandchildren.
He
was a member of the United Methodist Church.
Besides
his wife Marie, he is survived by his daughter Carene Sullivan of San Diego, Calif, and his son Roger and
wife Shirley of Indianola, Iowa; his grandchildren Cristina and Don Sullivan,
Ryan, Quenten and Jessikay Brown; two brothers, Delman and Roscoe
Brown
and two sisters, Thelma Blinker and Wilma Boswell and numerous nieces and
nephews and a host of friends.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, one infant sister, Lorene and one
brother, Austin.
Darrel's
friendly smile, and warm personality will be missed by all who knew him.

Funeral
services for Dorothy Alice Bubb were held Tuesday,
June 27, 1989 at the United Presbyterian Church in Lenox with Rev. Marcia Smith
Wood and Rev. Naizghi Zekarias officiating. Burial was at Stringtown Cemetery.
Dorothy
A. Bubb, daughter of Alonzo and Elsie Einfeldt Bubb, was born in Lenox,
Iowa on July 15, 1926. She died at her home in Clarinda, Iowa on Friday, June
23, 1989 after a short illness.
She
attended grade school and high school at Lenox and was a telephone operator
there for about 14 years. Following that she did child day care in West
Liberty, Iowa, enjoying that very much. She moved to Clarinda, Iowa in 1980. In
her later years she liked bird
watching
and did genealogy research. She kept in touch by mail with many relatives and
friends and will be greatly missed. She was cheerful and brave and thoughtful
of others.
Preceding
her in death were her parents; three sisters, Lela, Esther and Clara; and three
brothers, Everett, Leonard and Doc.
Surviving
are Harland Bubb, brother in Bellflower, Ca.; Lola
Bernard, sister and her daughter Valri and her
husband, Dr. Rob Davidson of
Danville,
Ca.; and Irma Jeanne Braymen and her husband, Paul of
Bedford, Iowa; and their daughter, Barbara Braymen of
Golden, Co. There are also two sisters-in-law, Bessie Bubb of Lenox and Virginia Pickron of Winterset, Iowa and
many nieces, nephews and
friends.

Funeral
services for Anna Mildred Craft were held Tuesday, July 11 at Stringtown Community Church with Rev. Elmer West and Rev.
John Murphy officiating. Interment was at Stringtown Cemetery.
Anna
Mildred Agnew, daughter, of Lon B. and Margaret Williamson Agnew, was born at
Bridgewater, Iowa on September 12, 1910 and died July 8, 1989 at the age of 78
years. She had been in failing health and had made her home at the Lenox Care
Center for
the
past 5½ years.
She
was married on January 8, 1929, to John Leo Craft who died October 2, 1976.
They farmed in the Kent and Stringtown
communities
all of their life. Mildred was a member of the Stringtown Community Church, Stringtown Ladies Aid, and the
Grant Community Workers.
Surviving
are two daughters: Dorothy Margaret Rectenbaugh and
husband Robert of Norfolk, Va.; Alice Joanne Piercy and husband Ronald of Lenox; four grandchildren and one great grandchild;
sister Lois Arbuckle of Monon, Ind.; brother Robert
Agnew of
Golden,
Colo.; as well as several nieces, nephews and many friends.
Preceding
her in death were her husband and three brothers: Ben, Bruce and Brant Agnew.

Jack
Wallace Cutbirth was born on March 22, 1920 in Van Burean, Ark., the first and only child of Leroy and
Elizabeth (Wallace) Cutbirth.
Jack
spent his early childhood days in Van Burean, Ark.,
Heavener, Okla., and DuQueen, Ark. Jack graduated from
Van Burean High School in 1935. He attended Westark Junior College and graduated with an Associate of Arts Degree in 1941. He
graduated from
Ouachita
University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1947. Jack attended Southern
Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. and received his Bachelor of Divinity
Degree from Southwestern Seminary in Ft. Worth, Tx.
in 1964. Jack spent 10 summers attending Princeton from 1975 to 1984. He
received his Doctorate of Ministry Degree from Drew University in Madison, N.J.
in 1982.
Jack
was ordained in 1945. He served Crossroads Baptist Church in Luann, Ark.;
Calvary Baptist Church in Barnwell, S.C.; Palestine Baptist Church in
Greenwood, Ark.; Van Burean Christian Church in Van Burea, Ark.; First Christian Church in Corning, Iowa and
First
Christian Church in Lenox, Iowa.
Jack
was an enlisted man in the U.S. Army from 1942 through 1945 and served in North
Africa and Italy with the First Armored Division. Jack later returned to the
Army from 1952 until 1962 where he served as a Chaplain in Tuley,
Greenland, Korea, and Thailand.
While
serving in Korea Jack received the Bronze Star.
Jack
is survived by Frances Watkins and Wallace Williams of Van Burean,
Ark. and many, many good friends who grieve his passing.

Orville
Edwin Fitzgerald, the son of Elza and Ethel Williams
Fitzgerald, was born December 10, 1910 on a farm in Adams County. He died
June
19, 1989 at the Lenox Care Center at the age of 78 years, six months and nine
days.
At
the age of 2, they moved near Tingley, where he
attended school. In 1932, he moved to Taylor County and started farming near
Gravity.
That
same year he was united in marriage to Winnie Miller, a school teacher from
near Mt. Ayr. Two children were born to this union:
Barbara Joan and Richard Lee. They farmed near Sharpsburg until retiring in
1973. At that time they moved to Lenox where he resided
until
entering the Care Center in May of this year.
Preceding
him in death were his parents, brothers John and Roy, sister Buelah, daughter Joan and grandson Dennis Cordell.
Left
to cherish his memory are his wife Winnie of Lenox; sister Edna Leighton of the
Lenox Care Center; son Richard and wife Jean of rural Lenox; six grandchildren:
Kathy Cordell McCall and husband Jim of Dotham, Ala.;
Patricia Cordell of Dotham, Ala.; Sharon
Cordell
Dalton and husband Quint of Sharpsburg; Ron
Fitzgerald and wife Susan of Conway; Chris Fitzgerald Irvin and husband Mike of
Bedford; and Brian Fitzgerald of Lenox; 10 great grandchildren and many nieces,
nephews and friends.
He
was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather and will be remembered
by all who knew him as a good neighbor, friend and one who loved his home and
community. He will be greatly missed by
all.

Edna
Johanna Grant, 86, Lenox, died Wednesday evening, April 5, 1989 at Mercy
Hospital in Corning. Memorial services will be held at a later date following
cremation. The Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Lenox has
charge of arrangements.
Mr.
Grant was born June 24, 1902 in Creston to Fred and Marie (Rosenthal) Krueger.
She lived in several cities in the United States. She worked as a nanny and
also at the Lenox Care Center for 10 years before retiring.
She
was the last of her family having been preceded in death by her parents, three
sisters and three brothers.
She
moved to Lenox in September, 1967 to retire, after living in several states and
did lots of traveling.
She
is survived by nine nieces and nephews, Melba Graby Palma of Lenox; Ruth Bradley Rubertt of Renton,
Wash.; Virginia Bradley
Rambald of Renton, Wash.; Theresa Bradley Wheeler of Kent, Wash.; Lucille Bradley
Reason of Lenox; Robert Bradley of Montclair, Calif.; Larry Bradley of Lenox;
Felix Bradley of Spokane, Wash.; Bernard Bradley of Jeffers, Minn., besides a
host of great nieces and nephews, great, great nieces and nephews, and great,
great, great nieces and nephews.

services for Melvin "Hondo" Henderson, Lenox, were held Thursday,

Melvin
Earl "Hondo" Henderson, 55, died June 26, 1989 of complications of
diabetes at Mercy Hospital in Corning.
Mr.
Henderson was born April 23, 1934 in Lenox to Earl M. and Susie Maye (Fearnot) Henderson. He grew
up in Lenox and attended Lenox Schools. He lived in Kansas City, Mo., for many
years and the past two years in Lenox.
He
was a self-employed trucker and worked for Hole's Shows of Tomorrow. He
attended the First Methodist Church.
Survivors
include his mother, Susie Henderson of Lenox and a sister, Verla Lou Crouch of Bloomington, Ind.
His father preceded him in death in
1966.

Houchin, Franklin Estle -
Franklin Estle Houchin was born October 18 1903 near Gravity, Iowa
and died at a convalescent hospital in Long Beach, Calif. April 1, 1989 at the
age of 85. He was the son of James W. and Mary Ellen Ellis Houchin.
In
1944 in California, he was married to Helen Laura Hanna, daughter of Carl and
Alice Hanna of Corning, Iowa. She died August 30, 1981. To this union one
daughter, Mary Alice, was born.
Frank
graduated from the Lenox High School with the Class of 1925. He worked several
years for the Ford Motor Company but retired from the Veterans Hospital in Long
Beach. He was a veteran of WW II and a member of American Legion Post 27 in
Long Beach.
He
was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, his parents, three brothers Ernest,
Ellis and Russel, five sisters, Mary and Flossie Houchin, Jane Doggett, Hester Day, and Helen Travis.
He
is survived by his daughter, Mary Alice Houchin of the home; three sisters, Mrs. Dora Reichardt of Yucca Valley, Calif., Mrs. Rena Webb of
Clarinda, Iowa and Mrs. Agnes Porter of Lenox; his mother-in-law, Mrs. Alice
Hanna and brother-in-law, Kenneth Hanna
of
Corning.
Both
Frank and his wife, Helen, died of complications of cancer.

were held May 5 in Overland Park with burial in the Johnson County Memorial
Gardens. The eulogy for the services was written and read by her daughter; Mrs.
Mike T Julie of Lenox.
Survivors
also include a son, Gary of Mission, Ks., a sister Margaret Barlow of Wichita,
Ks.; a brother, William Gibbons of Macon, Ga. and

Alvin
Hugh Leaver, son of Hugh Alvin (H.A.) and Carrie (Devore) Leaver, was born
September 28, 1904 on a farm near Greenwood, Nebraska, and passed away April 3,
1989 at his home in Sharpsburg, Iowa at the age of 84 years, six months and six
days.
Alvin
was a farmer all his life, farming near Ashland, Neb. until 1970, when he moved
to a farm east of Sharpsburg, and farmed there
until
he retired and moved to town this past fall of 1988.
Alvin
was united in marriage to Lettie Dougherty on
February 4, 1925 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. This marriage was to last for over 64
years. To this union, one son was born, Marvin Leaver of Creston.
Preceding
Alvin in death were his parents and two brothers.
Surviving
to mourn his passing are his wife Lettie, and son
Marvin and wife Dorothy Leaver of Creston; two grandchildren, Luann Zimmerman
and Mitchel Leaver; two great grandchildren, Brent
and Justin Zimmerman; three sisters, Gladys Newsham and Evelyn
Leaver

Earl Reed was born March 11, 1924, in Freona, Tx., the son of W.O. and Erma Belding Reed. He died July 2,
1989 at the age of 65 years, three months and 21 days.
In
1946 he was united in marriage to Betty Bartrem. To
this union were born nine children. In 1973 he was married to Betty Carnnahan.
He
raised four step-children and two grandchildren. He moved to the Lenox area and
made his home here since childhood.
He
is survived by his wife Betty, three sons: James and Tina of Diagonal, Dennis
and Shelly of Lenox, Tom and Jan of Lenox; six daughters: Linda and Larry

services for Ruth Anna Rhoades were held Monday, July 10 at the United

Cemetery in Lenox.
Ruth
A. Tripp Rhoades, daughter of William F. and Mary Francis Tripp was born in
Adams County near Kent, Iowa on April 20, 1897 and
died
on July 7, 1989 at the Lenox Care Center.
She
attended rural and Kent 10th grade schools. Ruth was married to Admiral R. Rhoades
on October 2, 1919. They made their home near Lenox, Iowa. Her entire life was
spent in Adams County until she became a resident of Lenox Care Center in May
of 1985.
Ruth
enjoyed her garden and her happiest hours were spent doing her garden and
sharing the results with family and friends. She was a homemaker who enjoyed
cooking, canning and all the benefits of being a wife, mother, grandmother and
the life of a farm person.
Ruth
became a member of the Prairie Star Church as a young girl. Her membership was
transferred to the Lenox United Presbyterian Church when Prairie Star merged
with the Lenox church.
Family
members include one son Robert Rhoades and wife Pat, daughters Frances Moyle of
Lenox, Florence Garrick and husband John of
Pacoma,
Wash., Jeanne Ostrem and husband Curtis of Ames,
Iowa; one sister, Grace Tripp of Clearfield Care Center.
Grandchildren
include Mary Moyle of Moline, Ill.; James Moyle and wife Marjean of Des Moines, Iowa, Elizabeth Cooper and husband Dean of Altoona, Iowa, Jill Bartello and husband John of Newton, Iowa Mark Ostrem of Des Moines, Linda Boettcher and husband
Zeig of Puyallup, Wash., Dawn Tharms and husband Jon of
Fort Dodge. Greatgrandchildren include one great
granddaughter and nine great grandsons.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1971, and one sister
Jessie Tripp and three brothers, Dayton, Harry and Ralph Tripp.

Funeral
services for George Schrader were held Monday, May 22, 1989 at the United
Methodist Church in Lenox with Rev Paul Grandon officiating. Burial was at North Fairview Cemetery in Lenox, Iowa.
George
Schrader was born on a farm north of Prescott, Iowa to Henry and Marie Schrader
on July 29, 1905 there he grew up and attended country school.
He
married Alma Bissell January 9, 1924 at the Methodist Parsonage in Corning, on
her parents 29th wedding anniversary. They were privileged to celebrate their
50th anniversary in 1974 and this year marks their 65th year of marriage. To
this union were born
two
sons: Don and Larry.
George
and Alma farmed north of Prescott for 12 years, then moved to a farm south of
Cromwell, and later to their present farm, northwest of Lenox, in Taylor
County, where they have lived 46 years. His main interests were farming and his
family. He continued
farming
as long as his health permitted. He had been in poor health the last two years
and spent the last four weeks in the
hospital
where he died May 19, 1989.
George
was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Louise Williams and Myrtle
Carl; and one brother, Otto Schrader, all of Prescott.
He
is survived by his devoted wife Alma; two sons, Don and wife Leona of Corning;
Larry and wife Bonnie of Lenox; eight grandchildren:
Lyle,
Kirk and wife Susan, Brent and wife Cathy, Shane and wife Renee, Todd and wife
Sandy, Tina and husband Jerry Ecklin, Troy and Shad;
nine great grandchildren: Noelie and Nicole, Hank,
Aaron, Taylor, Jennifer, and Shanna Schrader, and Jenna and Dana Ecklin;
and
a host of other relatives and friends and neighbors.

Dorothy
"Martin" Stoaks, 66, Springfield, passed
away Friday in St. John's Regional Health Center after a sudden illness.
Born
Dec. 2, 1922, in Springfield to Walter and Cecil Pursley,
she was married to Marvin Stoaks on May 4, 1975. She
retired in 1982 from Montgomery Wards, and was a
member of the Second Baptist Church in Springfield.
Survivors
include her husband, Marvin of the home; two daughters, Sherry Manies, Hartsburg, and Debbie Martin, Oakland, Calif.; a
sister, Jean Barnard, Rogersville; and two grandchildren, Scott and Melissa.
Services
were held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Second Baptist Church in Springfield, with Dr.
James Reimer officiating.
Burial was in Eastland Cemetery.
