Beck, Melvin Albert -
Melvin
Albert Beck of Lenox died Sunday, July 29,1984 at the age of 58 years, six
months and 28 days. The second son of
Albert
and Esther Olsen Beck was born on December 31, 1925 at Sharpsburg, Iowa.
He grew
to maturity in the Sharpsburg area and was united in marriage with Iona Jones
on June 19, 1949. This union was
blessed
with the birth of two children, Mark Alan and Cindy Renee.
Melvin
farmed in the Lenox area until 1963 when the family moved to Fort Collins,
Colorado. He returned to Lenox in 1972
and
has resided here since. He was preceded in death by his parents.
He
is survived by his son, Mark and wife Kosol of
Germany; his daughter, Cindy Moran and husband Mike of Carrollton,
Texas;
two brothers, Donald of Lenox and Duane of Sharpsburg; nieces, nephews and
other relatives and friends.
Graveside
services were held Saturday, August 4 at 9 a.m., with Reverend Don Fisher of
the Presbyterian Church of Lenox
officiating.
Interment was in Fairview Cemetery at
Lenox.

Gerald
Paul Carruthers, son of Frank S. and Dessa Robinson Carruthers, was
born near Lenox, Iowa on November 9, 1913. He
died
at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa following a short illness
on Wednesday, July 4, 1984 at the age of
seventy
years, seven months and twenty-five days.
He
was a lifelong resident of Lenox and a member of the Christian Church where he
served many years as a deacon.
Mr. Carruthers was also a member of the Lenox American Legion,
Parkinson Post #250, VFW Post #1797, past member
of
Rotary, and served several years on the Lenox City Council.
Gerald
attended school in Lenox and worked with his father until entering the Army in
January, 1942. He served in
the
Southwest Pacific until October, 1945 when he returned to Lenox to take over
the family business.
Gerald
was united in marriage with Margery Ward in Lenox on September 20, 1950.
He
was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. He was always willing
to help those in need and enjoyed being
active
in his church, his business and with his hobby of steam engines which he shared
with his son.
Preceding
him in death were his parents and a nephews, Randy Williams.
Survivors
include his wife Margery of Lenox: two daughters, Mrs. Donald (Nancy) Steinick of Ankeny and Barbara
Carruthers of Des Moines; his son, Daniel, of Lenox: two grandchildren, Kristottor and Amanda Steinick; a
brother,
Kenneth Carruthers of Los Angeles, California; a sister, Mrs.
Glen (Margaret) Williams of Ozark, Missouri; five aunts,
Mrs.
Elsie Carruthers of Cypress, California, Mrs. Grace Thuem oi Crowley, Texas, Mrs. Eva
Smith, Mrs. Edith Robinson,
and
Mrs. Lulu Robinson, all of Lenox; two brothers-in-law, Edward Ward and Glen
Williams; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy
Ward
and Norma Flynn: several nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
Services
were held Saturday, July 7 at 1:30 p.m. at the Christian Church in Lenox.
Pastor Don Jensen officiated.
Music
was by Mildred Walter, organist; and vocalists, Billie Jean Barker and Marilyn
Beck. Selections were "How
Great
Thou Art" and "Beyond The Sunset".
Casket
bearers were Earl Rohwer, Keith James, Bob Reynolds,
George Kohlway, Rudie Sabotka, and Harold Carey.
Honorary
bearers were Max Bales, Arnold Trepka, John Szpijnowski, and Ernie Campbell.
Military
rites were conducted by VFW Post #1797. Interment was in the North Fairview
Cemetery at Lenox.

Abi Van Houten Dawson of
Federal Way, Washington died Monday, May 14, 1984 at the age of ninety-eight
years, seven months and
seven
days. The daughter of Selina and George Van Houten, Abi was born October 7, 1885 on a farm south of Lenox,
Iowa. She
was
the last surviving member in a family of twelve children.
Abi graduated from Lenox High School with the Class of 1912 and then taught
in country schools around Lenox for a number of years. She was united in marriage
with Robert Dawson on November 26, 1911 at Anacortes, Washington. The
officiating minister was former
Lenox resident, Warren Eckels.
Abi continued teaching school following her marriage, completing thirty-six
years in the profession before retiring.
Survivors include her three children, Ethel Dasso of Mercer Island, Washington, Harold Dawson of Yelm,
Washington
and David Dawson of Juneau, Alaska; seven
grandchildren, nine greatgrandchildren, and a number
of nephews and nieces,
including George Barrans and Nellie McGrath of Lenox.
Lenox Time Table, Lenox, Iowa Wednesday June 6, 1984
Jessie Dey Ermand, age 95 of
Naples, Florida, died at a nursing home there Monday, June 25. Mrs. Dey Ermand was
a teacher
in the Lenox school system for many years and also served as the principal part
of that time.
Her
husband, Bill, was a clothier on Lenox for many years.
She
will be cremated and the ashes shipped to Lenox for interment in the East
Fairview Cemetery.

Francis
M. Folcey, the son of Melvin and Helen Stringham Folcey, was born
February 26, 1905 in Des Moines, Iowa.
He
died Friday, August 10, 1984 at the Greater Community Hospital in Creston, Iowa
at the age of seventy-nine
years,
five months and fourteen days.
He
grew to manhood in Des Moines and then moved to Creston for a year. He then
moved to Lenox, Iowa to manage
the
United Food Store which was the first self-serve grocery store in town. Francis
purchased the store several years
later,
remaining as the owner until 1961.
He
was united in marriage with Martha Hulen of
Centralia, Missouri on August 1, 1932. They made their
home
in Lenox all of their married lives.
Following
his retirement from the store, Francis sold advertising for the Wilkerson-Akers
Company of Kansas
City
until January of 1984.
Preceding
him in death were his parents; a brother, Jim Folcey and his wife, Helen.
Survivors
include his wife, Martha, of Lenox; two sisters-in-law, Geraldine Fliege of Ft. Madison and
Goldie Ethington of Council Bluffs; nieces and nephews;
other relatives and many friends.
Services
were held Tuesday, August 14 at 1:30 p.m. at the First Christian Church in
Lenox. Dr. Jack Cutbirth,
pastor,
officiated, assisted by Pastor Don Jensen.
Music
was by Mildred Walter, organist, and Janis Christensen, pianist. Selections
were "Gentle Shepherd" and
"God
Will Take Care of You".
Casket
bearers were Richard Wilson, Paul Parkhurst, Raymond
Cain, Dale Purdum, Allie Hegwood,
and Ralph Zabel.
Honorary
bearers were Don Tyler, Paul Davis, Gail Potts, Eddie Ryan, Keith Smith,

Spicer,
James Hughes, Kenneth John, Kenneth Riley, and Wayne Smith.

Lenox

LaNita Vivian Fulk, the
daughter of Homer and Annis Depree Minnick was born at Oskaloosa, Iowa September 20, 1905. She died at the Lenox Care Center in Lenox,
Iowa on Tuesday May 29, 1984 at the age of seventy-eight years, eight months
and eight days.
LaNita spent her childhood years in the Oskaloosa and
Morton Mills area and graduated from Villisca High School. She taught in rural schools near Corning for
several years.
LaNita was united in marriage with Ralph Fulk at
Guthrie Center, Iowa on May 21, 1930. The couple farmed near Coming and she
continued teaching for two more years. They moved to a farm north of Stringtown in 1943 where they made their home until moving
into Lenox in 1951.
Mrs. Fulk was a member of
the First Christian Church in Lenox and the Harmony Reading Circle. Her family
will always remember they were their mother's first concern. Home life was the
center of her devotion.
Preceding her in death were her parents and one
sister, Thelma Holt.
Survivors include her husband, Ralph of Lenox; her
daughter, Shirley Riley and husband, Richard of Corning; her son, Ronald and
wife, Susan of Lenox; three grandsons, Russell Riley, his wife, Mary, and their
daughter, Deena of Corning, Keith Riley and wife, Vicki of Aurora, Illinois and
Dallas Fulk of Lenox; two brothers, Homer Minnick of
Kent, Iowa and George Minnick of Mt. Ayr, Iowa; three
sisters, Evelyn Gem of Lenox, Dorothy George of Houston, Texas and Barbara
Horne of Mt. Ayr; as well as other relatives and many
friends.
Services were held Friday, June 1 at 1:30 p.m. at
the First Christian Church in Lenox. Pastor Don Jensen officiated.
Music was by Mildred Walter, organist; and Janice
Christensen, pianist. The selections were "Amazing Grace" and
"Precious Lord
Take My Hand".
Casket bearers were Dale Peterson, Dale Nelson,
Eldon Ewart, Kenneth McFee,
Eddie Ryan, and Raymond Brown.
Interment was in the North Fairview Cemetery at
Lenox.

George Bowdre Grey, the only child of Harry and Zella Bowdre Grey was born May
20, 1913 near Clearfield in Taylor County, Iowa. He died at the Veterans Hospital in Omaha,
Nebraska on Wednesday May 23, 1984 at the age of seventy-one and three days.
George
grew to manhood in this vicinity and also attended school here. He was united
in marriage with Edna Van Heeswyke on May 1, 1935 at
Creston, Iowa.
George
served his country during World War II as a member of the United States Army
for two years. He operated the Skelgas
business
in Lenox for twenty-five years and was employed as a Lenox mail carrier by the
United States Postal Service until retiring from there in 1975. He was also a
long time member of the Lenox Fire Department, serving as the Fire Chief for
twenty-five years, and was a member of Parkinson Post #250 of the Lenox
American Legion.
Preceding
him in death were his parents.
Survivors
include his loving wife, Edna Grey of Lenox; his daughter, Georgia Morey and
her husband, Ed, of Harlan, Iowa; his grandchildren, Lisa and Mike Morey, also
of Harlan; several cousins and nephews, as well as many friends.
Services
were held Friday, May 25 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lenox at 10 a.m.
Father Tim Fitzgerald officiated.
Music
was by Jeri Hanzlik, organist, and Mary Halligan, cantor. Selections were "Faith of Our
Fathers" and "Amazing Grace".
Casket
bearers were George Reynolds, Leland Hegwood, Ernie Hufnagel, Ivan Lucas, Sam Haering,
and Orvin Bush.
Honorary
bearers were Barney Miller, George Dunbar, Howard Morris, Bud Spoonemore, Raymond Trost,
Kenneth Black, Harley A. Porter, Eddie Ryan, Ralph Zabel,
Jack Refer, James Hughes, Dale Purdum, Jake Larson,
and Ray Cheese.

Victor
H. Mendenhall of Fort Dodge, Iowa, formerly of Sharpsburg, died Saturday
morning, August 4 at Trinity Regional Hospital
at
the age of 64. Services were held Tuesday, August 4 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist
Church with the Reverend Gary L. Grogan officiating. Burial was at North Lawn
Cemetery in Fort Dodge.
Survivors
are his wife, Helen, his son, Allen and wife Jacque, and four grandchildren,
all of Fort Dodge; two brothers, Ivor of
San
Jose, California, and Elvis of Prescott, Arizona; two sisters, Mrs. Valnetta Kraft of Oakland, California and Mrs. Loris
Sheridan
of Lenox.
Mr.
Mendenhall was born in Hatfield, Missouri and as a young boy, moved to Maloy, Iowa and graduated from high school there in
1939.
He was on the high school basketball team that went to the State tournament
three years in a row. After graduation,
he
worked for two years at the State Hospital in Clarinda. In 1940, he married
Helen McElhiney at Papillion, Nebraska.
He
was a veteran of World War II, serving with the US Navy as a hospital Corpsman
until 1945. The Mendenhalls operated a grocery
store
and meat locker in Sharpsburg for eight years. In 1954, he began working for
Safeway Stores in Red Oak and in 1962 the family moved to Fort Dodge, where he
was meat market manager for Safeway. He was employed by Safeway Stores for 25
years,
retiring
in 1979.

Lucille
Neely of Omaha, Nebraska passed away on July 23, 1984. She was born in Lenox,
Iowa on May 23, 1920, the
daughter
of Willard and Edna Fattig.
She
was united in marriage July 10, 1940 to Keith Neely of New Market. They settled
in Cherokee, Iowa, then moved
to
Omaha where they have lived since, except for a four-year period when they
lived in Chicago, Illinois.
She
is survived by her husband, Keith; three children, Wayne, Deanna and Roger;
daughters-in-law, Peggy and Jan and
six
grandchildren.

Glen Neuhardt, son of William and Fern Noble Neuhardt, was born in Adams county, Iowa near the town of
Lenox

age
of seventy-seven years, nine months and thirteen days.
Tom
was united in marriage with Halleen Karns July 16, 1932 at Bethany, Missouri. He was a lifetime
resident of the
Lenox
area and a retired farmer.
Preceding
him death were his parents, a son, Dean Glen; a daughter, Helen; and a sister,
Leila.
Survivors
include his wife, Halleen of Lenox; a daughter,
Marilyn Lubeley and husband, James, of Phoenix,
Arizona; a
granddaughter,
Cindy Earp, and husband, Wyatt, of Des Moines; a grandson, David Hayes of Ankeny,
Iowa; two sisters,
Leota Steele and husband, Henry, of Maize, Kansas and Reva Cline and husband, Clifford, of San Leandro, California; a brother,
Joe Neuhardt of rural Lenox; and a host of relatives and
friends.
Services
were held Monday, July 9 at Larkin-Bender Funeral Home in Lenox at 10 a.m.
Reverend Elmer West officiated.
Music
was by Norma Paymal, organist; and vocalists, Billie
Jean Barker and Marilyn Beck. Selections were "Going Down
the
Valley" and "In The Garden".

bearers were Gary Stoaks, John McCann, Doyle Flohra, Howard Stoaks, Loyal
Downing, and Jasper Ambrose.
The

Hal M. Pierce of Clearfield died Friday, July 6,
1984 at the Veterans Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of sixty-six
years, ten months and twelve days. The son of Mr.
and Mrs. Howard Pierce, he was born September 18, 1917 near
Bedford, Iowa.
Hal moved to Clearfield, Iowa at eighteen years of
age. He was united in marriage with Treva Boltinghouse on December 31,
1937.
Mr. Pierce was a veteran of World War II. He farmed
in the Clearfield community until his retirement.
Preceding him in death were his grandparents,
William and Laura Pierce; his father, Howard Pierce; and a son, Richard Haldean.
Survivors
include his wife, Treva of Clearfield; his daughter,
Jo Anne Durrett of Des Moines, Iowa; two sons, Gary
Lee Pierce of
Des
Moines and Alan Pierce of Elkhorn, Iowa; six grandchildren, Vicki Burkheimer, Doug Pierce, Lisa Pierce, Jennifer Pierce,

was in the West Fairview Cemetery at Lenox.

memorial has been established in Mr. Pierce's name.

Martin
Frank Rechsteiner entered into rest at the Greater
Community Hospital in Creston, Iowa on August 1, 1984 at the
age
of 69 years, seven months and five days. He was born in Adams county, Iowa at Nevinville on December 26, 1914, the
son
of Martin and Agatha Reich Rechsteiner.
He
was united in marriage with Pearl Luella Hill of Corning, on April 27, 1940 in
Creston, Iowa at St. Malachy's Catholic Church.
Those
surviving to honor his memory are his wife, Pearl of Lenox; a son, Tom and his
wife, Toni and their children: Shellie
(Mrs.
Mark) Reed and David of Lenox; two daughters, Loretta Hatton and her husband,
Dick and their children, Tom and Todd of Lincoln, Nebraska; and Helen Rainforth and her husband, Larry and their children, Vince
and Lance of Lincoln, Illinois.
Also
surviving are three sisters, Mary (Mrs. John) Hayes of Creston, Iowa; Rose
(Mrs. Harry) Wayman of Yuma, Arizona; and
Louise
(Mrs. L.R.) McDonald, also of Yuma; his brother and sisters-in-law: Mr. and
Mrs. Jack Hill of Corning; Mr. and
Mrs. Orlo Moore of Carroll; Mrs. Neva Hill of Lenox; Mrs. Delma Richards of Carroll; and by several nieces and
nephews and
countless
friends.
Martin
was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Father Leo Rechsteiner, O.S.B., John and Carl; and by a
brother-in-law,
Pat Hill.
Services
were held Saturday, August 4 at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with
Father James Chiaro and Father
Dennis Trausch officiating. Eucharistic minister was Paul
Longfellow. Music was by Diane Robinson, organist, and Mary
Halligan,
cantor.
Casket
bearers were Thomas Hatton, Todd Hatton, Mark Reed, Shellie Reed, Lance Rainforth, Vincent Rainforth, and
David
Rechsteiner.
Interment
was in the North Fairview Cemetery in Lenox.

Sean -
The
twin sons of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis West, 2305 South Ninth, Council Bluffs, Iowa
died at the University of Nebraska Hospital in Omaha. The twins, Danial and Sean, were born prematurely on Wednesday, May 9.
Danial died Sunday, May 20 and Sean died Saturday, June 2.
Services
were held at the St. Joseph Cemetery in Council Bluffs on Tuesday, May 22 and
Monday, June 4. Reverend

West of Lenox, Iowa, grandfather of the twins, officiated.
Survivors,
in addition to their parents, include a sister, Christy; two brothers, Jason
and Matthew, all of the home;

following an eleven month illness. She was sixty-seven years of age.
Mrs.
White was born December 26, 1916 in Des Moines, Iowa to Albert H. and Grace Corbitt Pedersen. She was united in
marriage
with Jesse James White April 4, 1943 in Des Moines.
Virginia
was a retired secretary.
Preceding
her in death were her husband, Jesse, in 1981, and her parents.
Survivors
include her daughter, Peggy White of Lenox; and nieces and nephews.
Graveside
services were held Friday, July 13 at 3 p.m. at the Dexter Cemetery. Father
James Kchiaro officiated.
