Beach, Bill Lee -
Bill
Lee Beach, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Spencer Beach, was born on
July 19, 1925 in Taylor County, Iowa. He
suffered
a massive heart attack and passed away on March 25, 1983, in the Rosary
Hospital, Corning, Iowa.
Bill
attended rural school in Grove Township and graduated from Lenox High School
with the class of 1942.
He
was united in marriage to Patricia McLaury in 1945,
and to this union were born nine children, one of whom, Jerry
Dale,
died in infancy. Bill ran the family farm in Grove Township in his early life;
then the family moved to their present
home
in Sharpsburg, Iowa. He operated a grocery store and locker plant for several
years and started a T.V.
Antennae
and Sales business, which he operated the rest of his life. He started working
for the U.S. Postal Service
as
Postmaster in Sharpsburg in 1961, transferring to a Rural Letter Carrier out of
Lenox in 1965. He received the Iowa
Outstanding
Carrier Award in 1980.
Bill
was a member of the Sharpsburg United Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge, and
the Order of the Eastern
Star
of Lenox, in which he was presently serving as an officer in each of these two
organizations; he was also a member of the
Rural
Letter Carriers Association. He was serving as City Clerk of Sharpsburg, was a
member of the Volunteer Fire
Department,
and has always helped in many capacities in the Community.
Bill
was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Eula Page Beach, one sister,
Luella Chandler, and four brothers,
Robert, Haldene, Donald, and Dale Beach.
He
is survived by his wife, Patty, and eight children, Robert of Houston, Texas,
Linda and husband, Fred Woolley of Lenox; Kathy and husband, Harold Kruzan of San Diego, California; Raelene and husband, Denis Best of Indianola, Iowa; Susan Beach of Independence,
Missouri,
James Beach and wife, Karen of Lincoln, Illinois; Jan and husband, Craig Bryant
of Sharpsburg; and Tim Beach, a student at NWMSU in Maryville, Missouri; a
brother, Walter Beach and wife, Dorothy of Dallas, Texas; three sisters,
Josephine and husband, Julian Walter of Lenox; Elizabeth and husband, Raymond
Brown of Lenox; and Marjorie and husband, Walt Steinke of Spokane, Washington;
fourteen grandchildren, Renee and Mandy Beach; Michelle, Mike and Kim Woolley;
Michael and Matthew Best; Randy, Jennifer, Lisa and Sherry Kruzan;
Jill Beach; and Brandy and Christopher Bryant; his mother-in-law, Ruth McLaury of Lenox; and
many
nieces, nephews and other relatives, as well as a host of friends.
Bill
took great pride in his family and was always ready and willing to help anyone
in need. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Services
were held Tuesday, March 29, at the United Methodist Church in Lenox with
Reverend Lester Hesseltine officiating. Pallbearers
were Ira Long, Gene Mains, Alfred Mattes, Richard Long, Fred Scott and Henry Arkfeld, with the Lenox and Sharpsburg
Postal
employees and rural carriers serving as honorary pallbearers. Music was
provided by Karole Jeanne Knapp.
Dean Posten conducted Masonic Rites at the gravesite;
interment was in the East Fairview Cemetery in Lenox.
A
memorial fund has been established and will go to the Sharpsburg Volunteer Fire
Department and the American Heart Association.

Jones -
Martha
Merle Borland, the youngest daughter of John A. and Catherine Cummings Jones,
was born January 15,
1901
on the family farm in Adams County, Iowa. She died at the Lenox Care Center in
Lenox, Iowa on Saturday,
February
19 at the age of eighty-two years, one month and four days.
Merle
graduated from Lenox High School and was a member of the Lenox United
Presbyterian Church. She also taught
school
for several years in Adams and Union counties.
On
November 14, 1929, she was united in marriage with John Madden Borland at
Creston, Iowa. They lived in
Creston
for several years before moving to the Jones farm north of Lenox. They later
moved to a farm south of Lenox
where
she resided until she entered the Care Center on January 26, 1983.
She
was a kind and devoted mother who was proud of her family.
Preceding
her in death were her parents; her husband on February 24, 1970; a daughter,
Shirley Stringham; a brother,
Ed
Jones; and three sisters, Janette Jones, Mae Brokaw, and Bertha McFee.
Survivors
include her son, John and wife, Mary of Lenox; a daughter, Katy of Bedford; a
sister, Nellie (Mrs. Cecil)
Maharry of Lenox; five grandchildren, John Borland and wife, Carole of Lenox, Deb Reed
and husband, Chuck of Oakland,
Iowa,
Tom Borland, and David and Donna Stringham of Afton,
Iowa; two great grandchildren, Doug and Jodi Reed of
Macedonia,
Iowa; as well as nieces, nephews and other relatives.

were held Tuesday, February 22 at the United Presbyterian Church in Lenox at
1:30 p.m. Reverend Don Fisher
officiated.
Music
was by Roberta Lockhart, organist, and Gwen Maynes,
soloist. The selections were ''Rock of Ages'' and ''How
Great
Thou Art".
Casket
bearers were Bob Cain, Merton Hood, Wayne McFee, Kenneth McFee, Glenn Brokaw, and Bart Everman.
Interment
was in the East Fairview Cemetery at Lenox.

Drexel
Lee Dukes, 58, of Piano, Texas, formerly of Villisca, died Saturday, March 5,
1983 in Plano.
He
was born October 29, 1924 at Sheridan, Missouri to Lesslia Ralph and Elsie Mae Byrns Dukes.
On
April 26, 1948. he was united in marriage with Deloris LaVonne Gulick.
Mr.
Dukes was a retired truck driver.
Preceding
him in death were an infant son, Jerry, his parents, one brother, a
half-sister, and three half-brothers.
Survivors
include three sons, Michael Leroy of Essex, Drexel Lee (Chuck) of Red Oak and
Gary Dee of Topeka, Kansas;
three
daughters, Marilyn (Bunny) Shadbolt of Villisca,
Marlene (Penny) Dukes of Loveland, Colorado and Monica (Candy)
Shadbolt of Lafayette, Colorado; nine grandchildren; two brothers, Russel and Ray, both of Lenox; and a sister, Mrs. Don
Starlin of Diagonal.

were held at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Villisca on Thursday, March 10 at 1:30
p.m. Reverend Clair Kerns

Firkins, George Washington
-
George
Washington Firkins was born on February 22, 1890 to Mary Elizabeth Taylor and
George Anson Firkins. He
died
on February 10, 1983 at the Rosary Hospital in Corning, Iowa after a short
illness.
He
attended county school at Mt Pleasant in Taylor County, Iowa and grew to
manhood in the Guss vicinity.
He
married Gertie Branan in
her home near Guss on February 18, 1914. Five children were born to this union, Cecil Howard,
Ethel Darlene, Viola Verlene, Vernita, Ania Vergene and Bessie
Leda.
George's
father homesteaded on a farm east of Guss. Here
George stayed and farmed with his father, each having a team of
horses.
They had a big orchard, with lots of raspberries and strawberries. They had
wonderful neighbors. gathering together
to
cut ice for the ice house and later enjoying freezers full of ice cream or
banding together to do the threshing or to make hay.
After
his parents' estate was settled in 1942, George bought 40 acres east of Bushville. Here, George and Gertie lived and
enjoyed
their grandchildren and great grandchildren.
George
loved to go fishing, play cards. checkers and dominoes. They went to church at the Ivyville Methodist and
enjoyed
many parties there, games such as Blind Man's Bluff, Old Man Tucker and Ten
Little Indians were played and
later
passed on to their children.
Preceding
him in death were his parents, George and Mary; brothers, John, Charles, Everett,
and Clifford; his wife,
Gertie;
two daughters, Vernita and Anita; one granddaughter,
Sheri Lynn Imel; and one great granddaughter, Pretty
Brand.
Surviving
are Cecil, of the home; Ethel and Clarence Findley of Antiock,
California; Verlene and Carl Brand of
Sharpsburg,
Iowa; Leda and Marvin Imel of Safford, Arizona;
fourteen grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and two
great-great
grandchildren; two sisters, Eva Crowell and Alta Henniger of College Springs, Iowa.
George
Washington Firkins was a kind and considerate husband and father, a good neighbor
who will be missed by
all
who knew and loved him .
"So
when George passed on, the gates opened wide and someone said, 'Why George,
your red carpet is layed right
down
this aisle and, haven't had it layed but a little
while."

Heikkinen, Theodore (Ted) -
Theodore
"Ted" Heikklnen, age 67, died suddenly of a
heart attack at his home in Lenox, Iowa on Easter Sunday, April 3,
1983.
He was born November 14, 1915 in Houton, Michigan to
Jacob and Anna Forvnen Heikkinen.
Ted
served in the United States Army in the Pacific Theatre of World War II. He
worked in the coal mines of
Michigan
as a young man and in the lead mines of Colorado. After returning to Iowa, he
worked on road construction
around
the state.
Mr. Heikkinen and Opal Calvin Pantry were united in marriage
April 17, 1966. They made their home in Corning,
Iowa
and later moved to Lenox.
Preceding
him in death were his parents and one sister.
Survivors
include his wife, Opal of Lenox; a sister, Anna Lorenz of Chassell, Michigan;
two brothers, Leonard of
Duluth,
Minnesota and Walfred of Crystal Falls, Michigan;
three stepchildren, Duane Pantry of Garden Grove, Iowa, Juanita
Olney
of Des Moines, Iowa and Sharon Parker of Thor, Iowa; seven step-grandchildren;
and eight step-greatgrandchildren.
Services
were held Tuesday, April 5 at 10:30 a.m. at the Larkin-Bender Funeral Home in
Lenox. Reverend Gerald Rogers
of
the Stringtown Community Church officiated.
Music
was by Norma Paymal, organist, and Billie Jean Barker
and Marilyn Beck, vocalists. The selections were "Going
Down
The Valley" and "Beyond! The Sunset".

Holcomb, Dillion B -
Dillon
B. Holcomb of Martelle, Iowa, music teacher and
retired farmer, died Tuesday, March 22 at Mercy Hospital in
Cedar
Rapids following a lengthy illness. He was seventy-two years of age.
He
was born October 10, 1910 at Martelle. Dillon
attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois following his
graduation
from Cornell College in 1934.
On
May 26, 1940, he was united in marriage with Vivian Wild at Viola, Iowa.
Mr.
Holcomb taught instrumental music in Lenox from 1939-1942. He retired from West
High School in Waterloo
and
moved to the family farm at Martelle. He farmed until
1978 but continued private music instruction.
Holcomb
directed the Mount Vernon Municipal Band and the El Kahir Shrine Band and was a trombonist with the Cedar
Rapids
Symphony and Municipal Band.
He
was a member of the Martelle Christian Church, the Mechanicsvillc Evangeline Chapter 393, Order of the
Eastern
Star, Mount Vernon Masonic Lodge, the Cedar Rapids Consistory, the El Kahir Shrine Temple, and the Cedar
Rapids
Embassy Club.
Survivors
include his wife, Vivian of Martelle; a son, Edwin of
Altoona. Iowa; a daughter, Paula of Evanston, Illinois; and
one
grandson.
A memorial
fund has been established.

Leonard, Arthur Dean -
Arthur
Dean Leonard, the son of Harry and Hazel Gillet Leonard, was born March 6, 1916 in Adams County, Iowa.
He
entered into rest at his home in Corning, Iowa on December 30, 1982 at the age
of 66 years, 9 months and 23 days.
He
attended grade school at Fairview in rural Taylor County, and graduated from
the Corning High School in 1933.
Following
his graduation, he was a buttermaker at the Corning
Creamery until November of 1942 when he was
called
into military service in World War II, serving three years in the U.S. Army.
After his discharge from the
service,
he worked five years as a buttermaker at Kimballton, Iowa. In 1950 he returned to Adams County where
he
engaged
in farming until moving to Corning in 1978. He continued his interest in
agriculture by working with Dr.
M.R.
Beemer for three years.
On
September 28, 1940 he was united in marriage with Murle Reimer at Lenox. Iowa.
Dean
was preceded in death by his parents: a sister, Dorothy; and an infant brother.
Surviving
to honor his memory are his wife, Murle of Corning;
their children, Victor Leonard and wife, Jan of San
Mateo,
California; Michel Caniglia and husband, Joe of
Omaha, Nebraska; Stephen Leonard and wife, Ann of
Templeton,
Iowa; Ann Finn and husband, Tim of Longmont, Colorado; Jane Kampsnider and husband, Dave of Littleton,

Jesse LaVerne -
Jesse LaVerne Levi was born in Gravity, Iowa on May 9, 1922 and passed away on March 9, 1983
at St Luke's Hospital in Davenport, Iowa at the age of sixty years and ten
months. He had been in failing health
for the past seven years. He was the
oldest son of Albert and Pauline Morgan Levi.
He great up in Gravity and graduated
from Gravity High School with the class of 1940. He attended Boyles College in Omaha, Nebraska
for a time. He was a Navy Veteran of
World War II. In 1972 he retired as a
bread salesman for Continental Bakeries in Davenport where he had been employed
for 25 years.
On June 18, 1941 he married Velma
Huntington in Maryville, Missouri. To
this union four children were born, Patricia, Janet, Richard Frank and Mary
Louise.
In 1953 he married Hattie
"Penny" Davis in Arkansas. To
this union four children were born, Gregory A., Marcene,
Sharon and Denise.
He leaves to mourn his passing his
wife, Penny, six daughters, Patricia and husband Larry Rogers of Lenox, Janet
and husband Greg Reed of Cumberland, Mary and husband Louis Anderson of Omaha,
Nebraska, Marcene and husband Phil Wheeler of
Bettendorf, Denise and husband Greg Coffman of Davenport and one son Gregory Levi
and wife Jennifer of Davenport, his mother, Mrs Pauline Levi and his brother Robert P Levi both of Cedar Rapids, eleven
grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held in the Runge Mortuary, Davenport, Iowa on Friday March 11 at 1
p.m. Revered William Steward of the
Grace United Methodist Church in Davenport officiated. Interment was in the Memory Park Cemetery in
Davenport.

Martha O Pearson, 311 South Elm,
Creston, Iowa, the daughter of Hugh and Mahala Dye
Dixon, was born in Unionville, Missouri on May 25, 1885. She died Tuesday February 15 at the Crest
Haven Care Center in Creston at ninety-seven years of age.
Mrs Pearson was a former resident of Adams County and Lenox, Iowa until moving to
Creston in 1953. On June 2, 1956 she was
united in marriage to Al Pearson. He
preceded her in death in November of 1960.
Martha
was a homemaker and a member of the Salem Lutheran Church in Creston,
Preceding
her in death were two husbands; her parents; two sons, Hugh Fisher and James
Brown,; three sisters; six brothers; a granddaughter, Sharon Riepe, and a great great granddaughter.
Survivors
include two daughters, Mrs Goldie Schowalter and Mrs. Evelyn Reed, both of Creston; three stepsons, Glenn
and
Gail Pearson, both of Rockford, Illinois and Wayne Pearson of Creston; seven
grandchildren; nineteen greatgrandchildren;
several
great greatgrandchildren; several step-grandchildren;
and step greatgrandchildren.
Services
were held Thursday, February 17 at the Salem Lutheran Church in Creston. Pastor
Dan Mixdorf officiated.

"The Old Rugged Cross" and "Just As I Am".

Ruby
lived most of her life in Des Moines where she was employed for twenty-three
years as a supervisor for Look
magazine.
Her
husband, Ralph Pullman, preceded her in death.

Moines; a sister, Clora Noland of Des Moines, two
brothers,
Lavern
Collins and John Baker, both of Palm Desert, California; four grandchildren;
and her aunts and uncle, Isabel Nixon,

John Henry -
John Henry Refer, one of seven children
of John and Margaret Smith Refer, was born October 15, 1897 at Victor, Iowa in
Iowa County. He died at the Lenox Care Center, Lenox, Iowa
on Thursday February 17 at the age of eight-five years, four
months and two days.
On
June 27, 1922, he was united in marriage with Camilla Marie Conner at
Maquoketa, Iowa. Jack and Camilla moved lo
Lenox
in 1942. They operated Jack and Bob's Cafe on Main Street until retiring in
1961.
John
spent his leisure hours with his favorite pastimes of fishing, hunting, and
working in his garden until his health
failed.

Richard at the age of

Gunnar
W. Sandstrom of Creston, Iowa died at the Lenox Care
Center, Lenox, Iowa on Thursday, January 27 following
a
lengthy illness. He was eighty-one years of age.
Mr. Sandstrom was born May 31, 1901 in Erngislanvton Orsjo, Sweden to Johan Teandar and Alma Josefina Peterson Sandstrom.
He
immigrated to the United States in 1925 where he lived with his uncle and
family, Mr. and Mrs. Inar Peterson of
Creston.
Gunnar
became a citizen of the United States in 1931.
On
January 3, 1933, he was united in marriage with Viola Veatch in Omaha, Nebraska.
They farmed northwest of
Cromwell
until 1942 when they moved to their own farm. In 1977, they moved to Creston.
Gunnar
was a member of the Salem Lutheran Church.
Preceding
him in death were his parents and a granddaughter, Rosann Lyn Sandstrom.
Survivors
include his wife, Viola of the home; a daughter, Marlene Miller and husband,
Randy of Lenox; a son, Albert
Sandstrom and wife, Louise of Dallas Center, six grandchildren, Valerie and Loren Sandstrom, both of Dallas Center,

Swartwood, Rena Scott -
Rena
Scott Swartwood, the daughter of John and Sarah
Scott, was born May 22, 1897 in Maloy, Iowa. She died
March
20,
1983 at the age of eighty-five years.
Rena
moved with her family to a farm near Maloy at the age
of three. She spent her childhood there.
On
March 1, 1918, she was united in marriage with Guy W. Swartwood.
The couple lived in and near Clearfield, Iowa.
After
leaving Clearfield in 1938, Rena lived in Des Moines, Kansas City and San
Diego, California. Her retirement
years
were spent in Maloy, Bedford, and Lenox, Iowa.
Rena
maintained a high degree of independence throughout her life despite a long
history of hardships and physical
ailments.
She will be missed by her family and friends.

December, 1970; and a brother,
Ralph
Scott.
Survivors
include a son, Guy W. Swartwood of Kansas City,
Missouri; a daughter, Mary Lou Kribill of Moline.
Illinois;

grandchildren; twenty three greatgrandchildren; and
two sisters, Ruth Tamerius of Bedford, Iowa and Ruby
Soma
of
Lenox, Iowa.
Services
were held at the Wilson-Watson Funeral Home in Clearfield on Wednesday, March
23 at 11 a.m. Reverend
Jim
Turner officiated.
Casket
bearers were Eric Sage, Reed Helm, Fred Helm, Dill Rhodus,
Steve Dymond, Mike Swartwood,
Robert Swartwood,
and
Richard Swartwood.
Interment
was in the Clearfield Cemetery.

Walter,
Jennie Evelyn Fife Preston -
Jennie Evelyn Preston, the daughter of
Arthur S and Laura Ellen Gillett Fife was born in Adams County, Iowa on
September 18, 1895. She died at the Iowa
Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines on Friday March 18, 1983 at the age of
eight-seven years and six months.
Jennie grew to womanhood on her parents
farm south of Corning and attended Adams County rural schools.
On Thanksgiving Davy 1915 she was
united in marriage with Earle Raymond Preston at her parents' home. Jennie and
Earle made their home on a farm near Lenox. Their marriage was blessed with the birth of two children, Darlene and
Richard.
Following Earle's death on January 1,
1932 Jennie and the children moved to Corning where they made their home until
moving to Creston.
During the 1940's Jennie moved to Des
Moines and was a hostess at the Commodore Hotel and later Yonker's Tea Room. October 27, 1962 she was
united in marriage with Andrew A Walter. The couple made their home in Des Moines. Andy preceded her in death on August 28,
1965.
Jennie was a member of the Lenox United
Methodist Church and later the Grace United Methodist Church in Des
Moines. She was also a life member of Salome Chapter Co4, Order of
the Eastern Star of Lenox.
Others preceding her in death besides
her husbands were her daughter, Darlene on November 3, 1933, five brothers,
Floyd, John, Harry, LaVerne and Walter Fife, and her
step children, Homer Walter, Lonzo Walter, Zelma F
Walter and Esther Mae Waddell.
Survivors include her son, Dr Richard
Preston and wife, Phyllis of Des Moines, three grandchildren, Deborah, Mark and
David Preston, a brother, Otis Fife of Corning, a stepson Glendon Walter of Prescott, nine step grandchildren, several step greatgrandchildren,
three sisters-in-law, Berniece Preston Smith of
Creston, and Laura and Grace Fife of Corning, as well as nieces and nephews.
Services were held Monday, March 21 at
1:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Lenox. Reverend Lester Hesseltine, pastor officiated.
Casket bearers were Mervin Walter,
Russell Fife, Harvey Fife, Edward Fife, William Fife and Howard Spring.
Music was by Kathryn Wilson, organist
and Marilyn Beck and Billie Jean Barker, vocalists. The selections were "How Great Thou
Art" and "The Lord's Prayer".
Interment was in the West Fairview
Cemetery at Lenox.

Wurster, Clifford Lee -
Clifford
Lee Wurster, the son of John and Mary Lee Wurster, was born March 1, 1916 on a farm two miles west of
Lenox,
Iowa.
He died at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa on Wednesday,
March 30, 1983 at the age
of
sixty-seven years and twenty nine days.
Cliff
attended Grove #1 school and was a member of the Christian Church in Lenox. He
was united in marriage with
Mary
Holmes on April 26, 1941 at Maryville, Missouri.
Mr. Wurster will be remembered most for his love of farming as
well as for raising and caring for animals. He
was a
loving husband and father and enjoyed being with his grandsons.
Preceding
him in death were his parents and a son, Harold, in 1967.
Survivors
include his wife, Mary of Lenox; a son, Gary and wife, Marilyn of Colorado
Springs, Colorado; two grandchildren,
Scot
and Kelly Wurster; three sisters, Dorothy Crisp and
husband, Vernon of Lenox, Minnie Ashman and husband,
Bill
of Oskaloosa, Iowa and Ruth Reynolds and husband, George of Lenox; a brother,
Russell and wife, Irene of Lenox; two
sisters-in-law,
Martha Aigaki and husband, Charlie of Wilcox, Arizona
and Lula Thompson of Cameron, Missouri; as well as
many
nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Services
were held Saturday, April 2 at 1:30 p.m. at the First Christian Church in
Lenox. Pastor Jack Cutbirth officiated.
Casket
bearers were John Sprague, Ronnie Crisp, Jim Thompson, David Reynolds, Mark
Wilson, and Haldean Wilson.
Music
was by Mildred Walter, organist. The selections were "The Old Rugged
Cross" and "How Great Thou Art".
Interment
was in the West Fairview Cemetery at Lenox.
