services for Vesta C. Barrans were held Thursday, Oct. 11, 1990 at Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Lenox with Rev. Carl Cummings officiating. Burial was in West
Fairview Cemetery, Lenox, Iowa.
Vesta C. Barrans was born October 27, 1895 at New Market,
Iowa. She was one of four children born to George and Cora McAlpin Clark. The family moved to Bedford while Vesta was
still an infant. She attended Bedford schools and graduated in 1913.
Vesta accepted Christ as her Saviour in her teens during a
revival at the Bedford Methodist Church. She attended Sunday school, church,
Junior and Epworth League regularly. She also assisted as church organist.
Vesta was employed as a cashier by the Thompson Mercantile in Bedford for many years.
Vesta was married to Fred J. Barrans on January 1, 1956 at
the Presbyterian Church in Lenox. They enjoyed several years of marriage until
Fred died January 23, 1969. She was also preceded by two sisters Stella and
Pearl and a brother Glenn.
Vesta died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 1990 at the Greater Community Hospital in Creston at the
age of 94 years, 11 months and 12 days.
She
is survived by a sister-in-law, Edith Notz of Lenox;
nephew Richard Notz and wife Linda of Lenox; great
niece Annette Paxton and great nephew Jeff Notz; and
cousin Viola Shaffer of New Market.

Dolly
Elizabeth Boham was born to Ephram and Scena Jenkins Boham February 25, 1930 in Conway, Iowa. She died November 21, 1990 in Creston, Iowa.
She
was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Helen Davis.
She
lived in Lenox for many years caring for her father. She moved to Creston 20
years ago to live with her sister Ruth Gowey, and
then moved to the Afton Care Center in February, 1988.
She
attended the Christian Church.
Left
to cherish her memory are sisters Mildred Davidson, Lenox, and Ruth Gowey, Creston; brother. Lloyd Boham,
Ohio; several nieces and nephews.

Helen Radeane Ferguson -
Services
were held for Helen Brokaw Sunday, November 11, at the Lenox United Methodist
Church. Burial was at Fairview Cemetery. Rev. Paul Grandon officiated the services. Music was by Katherine Wilson.
Helen Radeane (Ferguson) Brokaw, daughter of George and
Mary (Recknor) Ferguson was born March 4, 1938, in
Taylor County and died at St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska on Thursday,
Nov 8th, 1990 at the age of 52.
She
grew up in the Lenox community, attending rural school and graduated from Lenox
High School in 1956. From there she went to Tele-type school and worked for the
Teletype Co. in Topeka, Ks. for nine months.
On
November 24, 1957 she was united in marriage with Paul Brokaw at the Lenox
Methodist Church. The union of this marriage was blessed with four children,
the family lived in the Lenox community all through the years. Helen was a very
active part of the Lenox community. She worked for numerous Lenox businesses.
The highlight of her working career was owning and operating the Tiger Den for
10 years. It brought Helen great joy knowing that she provided a place for the
youth of the Lenox community. Helen will long be remembered for her
faithfulness in many volunteer and service organizations. She was a loving
wife, mother, and grandmother, the center of a loving family.
She
was preceded in death, by her parents, sister, Georgia Stoaks,
grandson, Jordan Robert Brokaw, and brother-in-law, Walter (Ollie)
Brokaw.
Survivors
include her husband, Paul, one daughter, Paula and husband, Doug, of Lenox,
three sons, Tim and wife, Kim, of Fort Worth, Tx.,
Tom,
stationed in Karlsrune, Germany, Bob and wife, DeeAnn, of Iowa City, Ia., six grandchildren, Abbie Horton, Blake Horton, Josh Horton, Nathan Brokaw,
Taylor Brokaw, Cassie Brokaw, four sisters, Merle Beggs and husband, Don, Marjorie Evans and husband, Leo, Thelma Boltinghouse and husband, Rollie, Jaunita Sweeney and husband, George, brother-in-law, Don Stoaks and many other family members and many, many friends.
To
know Helen was to love her. During the last three years of her life she was
brave and valiant in her battle with cancer. Truly her life has been an
inspiration to all and she will be missed.

Susie
Alice Brown, eldest daughter of Albert and Effie Thompson Taylor, was born in
Taylor County near Bedford on November 24, 1896. She passed away on October 21,
1990 at the Lenox Care Center at the age of 93 years, 10 months, and 27 days.
Susie
worked as a telephone operator in Lenox for several years. On June 30, 1942,
she was married to Guy Brown of Sharpsburg. They
lived
on the farm near Sharpsburg until 1964, when they retired and moved to Lenox.
In 1987 Susie moved to the Lenox Care Center.
Susie
was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Lenox.
She
is survived by a sister Helen Hamblin and husband Lloyd of Lenox; two
step-children: Irene Brown Vaclavika and her husband
Joe of Inkster, Mich.; Harold Brown and wife Lea of Westland, Mich.; and their
children and grandchildren; three nephews: Gary Hamblin of Avoca, Iowa; Richard
Hamblin of Loveland, Colo.; William Martin of Hickory, N.C.; a niece Karen
Martin Hasman of Evanston, Ill.; and
several
great nieces and nephews.
She
was preceded in death by her husband Guy, her parents; two sisters: Vera Martin
and Ruby Speelman; and her brother Clark Taylor.

Cordell, Cecil Troy -
Funeral
services for Cecil Cordell were held October 2, 1990 at Shum-Novinger Funeral
Home with Rev. Carl Cummings officiating. Interment was at Bedford City
Cemetery.
Cecil
Troy Cordell, son of Isaac Henry Cordell and Clara Ann Tackett Cordell was born
and raised near Athelstan, Iowa and lived his entire lifetime in Southwest
Iowa. He was born July 13, 1917 and departed this life September 29, 1990 at
the Greater Community Hospital in Creston, Iowa at the age of 73 years, two
months and 16 days.
He
was united in marriage to Minnie Bell Shepherd in 1939 and together they raised
seven children; they have 16 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Nephews Wilbur and Harold Durfey also made their home
with Minnie and Cecil for several years.
Cecil
worked for over 40 years as a custom butcher driving all over Southwest Iowa
and Northwest Missouri. In addition to this he did farm work; raised and
trained horses; worked in two elevators and was town constable of Clearfield,
Iowa for 12 years.
He
was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Mabel, Lillie and Evelyn;
his brother Carl and his beloved grandson David Haidsiak.
Left
to mourn his passing are his wife of over 50 years Minnie; sons: Eugene of
Creston, Iowa, Albert of Des Moines, Iowa and Richard of Byhalia, Miss, and
their families; daughters: Ann Haidsiak of Red Oak,
Kay Bolinger of Lenox, Elinor Lumbard of Diagonal, Iowa, and Carol Cordell of Ames,
Iowa and their families; his sister Mary Smith and family of Florence, Texas
and his sister Cordys Newby and
family
of Bedford, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many, many friends.
Cecil
was a kind and considerate person and he will be sadly missed by all those who
knew and loved him.

Donaldson, David Harold
(Duke) -
David
Harold "Duke" Donaldson, son of John and Elizabeth Swindle Donaldson
was born May 3, 1911 in Vona, Colorado. He passed
away September 14, 1990 at Greater
Community Hospital in Creston, Ia. He
was 79 years old. [Buried West Fairview/Lenox]
When
he was 2-1/2 years of age his parents moved to the farm in Taylor County. "Duke" attended Grove #3 until
eighth grade. His nickname "Duke" was given to him in country school.
In
October of 1942 Duke joined the U.S. Coast Guard where he specialized in
training patrol dogs for coastal protection.
Duke
met Thelma Lillie on leave and they were later married in Oregon. They returned
to Taylor County after his discharge from the
military.
Along with his farming he became a breeder of German Shepherd dogs. He retired
after 17 years with the Postal Service.
Duke
is survived by his daughter Dianna White and husband Ronald of Lenox and granddaughter
Sheri Hatton of Omaha, Nebraska. He was preceded in death by his wife Thelma,
daughter Donna Rea; parents, brother, Robert, and sister, Evelyn.
He
was a lifetime resident of the Corning area, a member of the American Legion
Post #117, and a 49 1/2 year member of the Instruction Lodge #275 A.F. and A.M.
in Corning. In 1947 he advanced and was accepted to the Orient Arabic Order of
the Nobles of
the
Mystic Shrine.
Duke
was always proud of his heritage and his family farm was recognized as a
Century farm in 1973. Ownership of the farm still remains in the family.
Duke
loved his family and he enjoyed having them with him. He saw the beauty in
antiques and loved being with his friends to recall the "old days."

Evans,
David E -
The
life of a Lenox man was claimed Tuesday, Nov. 6, in an auto accident two miles
northwest of Malvern on U.S. Highway 34.
David
Evans Sr., 43, of Lenox, died as a result of injures received in an a two car
accident, resulting from icy road conditions.
The
driver and passenger of the other vehicle, Mr. and Mrs. Butt, Clarinda, were
also killed in the accident.
According
to Mills County Sheriffs officials, Butt was driving westbound and had just
topped a hill when he apparently lost control on the slush and snow covered
road. The Butt vehicle then swerved into the eastbound lane where it was struck
in the passenger side by the oncoming Evans vehicle.
Evans
has lived in the Lenox community since 1976. He was a conductor and brakeman
for the Burlington Northern Railroad. Besides his wife, Janice, he is survived
by two daughters, Reva Evans of Lenox, and Mrs.
Dennis (Dawn) Swanger of Logan, Iowa; and a son,
David Evans, Jr. stationed at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida.
Funeral
services were held for Evans Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Raynor Funeral Home. Interment was at Martin Chapel Cemetery, Pacific
Junction,
Iowa. Memorials to Lenox High School Athletic Department.

E. Evans, Sr., 43 years of Lenox, Iowa passed away Tuesday afternoon following
an automobile accident on Highway 34 one
mile
west of Malvern. He was born in Red Oak, Iowa and had lived in the Council
Bluffs and Pacific Junction area before moving to Lenox in 1976. Mr. Evans was
a conductor and brakeman for the Burlington Northern Railroad. He served four
years with the United States Air Force. He and his wife, Janice (Profeda) were married nineteen years. Besides his wife,
Janice, he is survived by two daughters, Reva Evans
of Lenox and Mrs. Dennis (Dawn) Swanger of Logan,
Iowa; son, David Evans, Jr. stationed at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida; five
sisters, Darlene Evans of Council Bluffs, Malinda Evans of Council Bluffs,
Della Anglen of Omaha, Ne., Deanna King of Glenwood,
and
Denise Evans of Pacific Junction; six brothers Delbert Evans of Sussex, Wi., Donald and Dale Evans both of Glenwood, Darwin Evans
of Aurelia, Iowa, Dennis and Darrell Evans both of Council Bluffs; seven
grandchildren; aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in
death by his parents Russell and Selma Evans.
Funeral
services were Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Raynor Funeral Home. Rev. Paul Grandon, pastor Lenox
Methodist Church officiated at
the
services. Family received friends at the Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Lenox, Friday evening front 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Interment was at
the Martin Chapel Cemetery, Pacific Junction, Iowa. Military graveside services
were conducted by Glenwood American Legion. Memorials to Lenox High School
Athletic Department.

Wilma
Lewis, former Lenox resident, passed away Sept. 23, 1990 at Shasta Convalescent
Hospital in Redding, California, where she had been a long time resident.
She
was preceded in death by her husband, Walter C. Lewis. Surviving her are two
sons, William of Redding and Carlton of Moumonth
Illinois.
Also three grandsons and five great-grandsons.
The
Lewis family moved to Lenox in 1926 when Walter became manager of Hawkeye
Lumber Co. They were quite active in local civic and social affairs along with
their church work, later moving to California in 1940.

Miller, Clara Marie Key -
Funeral
services for Clara Marie Miller were held Monday, Dec. 31, 1990 at the United
Methodist Church in Lenox with Rev. Paul Grandon officiating. Interment was in West Fairview Cemetery, Lenox, Iowa.
Clara
Marie Key, the daughter of Frank and Lillian Hyatt Key, was born on the family
farm in Taylor County on September 11, 1914. She
passed
away December 28, 1990 at Mercy Hospital in Corning at the age of 76 years,
three months, and 17 days.
She
was united in marriage to Homer Miller on December 19, 1934 in Creston. One
daughter Helen came to bless this marriage. Homer and Marie farmed in the Stringtown, Kent and Lenox areas before retiring and moving
into Lenox in 1976. After Homer's death in 1981, Marie continued to live at
home until moving to the Lenox Care Center in July, 1988.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, husband Homer, and brother Kenneth Key.
Marie
is survived by her daughter Helen and husband Clyde Belding of Lenox; four
grandchildren: Rodney Belding and wife Joan of Lenox; Jan Reed and husband Tom
of Lenox; Jolene Gourley and husband Dave of Mt. Ayr; Denise Reynolds and husband Dave of Durant; 12 great
grandchildren: Cory, Cody, Cole, Cruz and Makinze Reed; Shilo, Brooke and Amanda Belding; Justin,
Mitchell and Beth Gourley; and Paige Reynolds; two
brothers, Melvin Key and wife Linda of Atlantic; Reldon Key and wife Doris of Lenox; sister: Bonnie Trexler
and
husband Allen of Lincoln, Neb.; sister-in-law: Josephine Key of Creston; as
well as several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
She
was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Methodist Quilting Ladies, and
several neighborhood clubs. She did quilting at home for others as well as her
grandchildren and great grandchildren. Making her house a home was her joy in
life and she will be remembered as one who did so many extra things for those
she loved. Marie adored her family and they will remember warmly the visits
with her great grandchildren whom she adored so much.

Funeral
services for Ruby P. Miller were held Thursday, Oct. 4, 1990 at the First
Christian Church in Lenox with Rev. Carl Cummings officiating. Interment was in
West Fairview Cemetery, Lenox, Iowa.
Ruby
P. Miller was the oldest of the five children of David and Minnie Miller who
farmed south of Bedford. Preceding her in death were her sisters Ismay and Beulah, and her brothers Paul and Troy, and also
her daughter-in-law, Coryl Miller. [Born Nov 17,
1896]
She
always had fond memories of the friends she made while attending Bedford High
School, and also those who attended the Eagle Grove Church when she was young.
In
1919 she married Raymond Miller and they farmed near Bedford for a few years
and had two children, Raymond (Bing), of Sharpsburg, and David of Springfield,
Va. When hard times hit in the late
1920's, they were forced to give up farming and Raymond
started
selling cars, and in about 1930 bought the Chevrolet garage in Lenox. The
garage remained a family business run by Bing after Raymond's death in 1952.
Ruby
was a faithful and active member of the Christian Church all her life. For many
years she was active in the church choir and the social and study groups of the
church.
After
Raymond's death, she remained a part owner of Miller Chevrolet for a number of
years before selling her share of the business to Bing. During this time, she
had the opportunity to travel extensively with Lenox friends and also worked at
the Smart Shop. Time was
also
spent on Eastern Star matters.
During
the last years of her life she resided at the Ville de Santa Nursing Home in
Omaha where she passed away October 1, 1990 at age 93.
She
always retained the joy of meeting and talking with people, and to the end was
able to see humor in the events taking place around her.
Her
family will miss her but accept that there is a time for all things, including
death. She is survived by her sons Bing and David, David's wife Nancy,
grandchildren Chinky Eberle, Coryl Ann Creed, Steve and Eric Miller, Steve's wife
Roberta, and a number of great
grandchildren.

Homer
Ray Pugh, the sixth child of Jacob W. and Allie Rose Ingram Pugh, was born
August 3, 1903 in Adams County and died at the Greater Community Hospital in
Creston on October 15, 1990 at the age of 87 years, two months and 12 days.
At
the age of 12 he became a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Stringtown. In 1944, he transferred his membership to the
Corning Methodist Church and later in 1959 he and his family became members of
the Lenox United Presbyterian Church. He has
served
as an elder for several years.
On
July 11, 1934, he was united in marriage to Iva Struwe at her parents home six miles east of Lenox. To this
union was born two daughters: Carolyn Mae, Marlene Kay, and a son Deane Edwin
who died in infancy.
Homer
was a quiet, patient, talented man; a loving husband and father and a good
neighbor. His life was spared in 1945, 1959, and 1990 due to his faith in God
and the care of his loved ones. He spent his entire life in the Lenox area
except for 18 years as a mechanic for
Adams
County.
Preceding
him in death were his parents, infant son, four sisters: Nellie Penfold, Faye Lawrence, Erma Brown, and Vera Pugh, and a
brother Roy.
Surviving
are his wife Iva of the family farm; his two daughters: Carolyn and husband Brice
Johnson of Goodyear, Ariz.; Marlene and husband Dick King of Lemoore, Calif.;
five grandchildren; one great grandson; one step grandson; two sisters: Pearl Hetland
of
Phoenix, Ariz.; Edrie Kaiserlik of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and two brothers: Lloyd of Bandon, Ore.; and Lester of Arispe, Iowa.

Pearl
Ethel England was born December 6, 1899 at Tingley,
Iowa, Ringgold County to Joe and Margaret Shay England. She departed this life
on October 27, 1990 at Mercy Hospital in Corning, Iowa, at the age of 90 years,
10 months and 21 days.
As a
young girl she moved with her family to a farm north of Clearfield. She married
Bert A. Routh on June 14, 1919. To this union was
born one daughter, Bernadine Lavone.
She
was preceded in death by her husband, Bert, on January 16, 1981; her parents;
six brothers, Sam, Jerry, Ed, Harry, Elmer and Walter, and one sister, Gladys Routh.
She
is survived by one sister Mary Baker of Mitchellville, Iowa; daughter
Bernadine; son-in-law J.E. Ecklin; four grandchildren,
Johnny and wife Kathy, Judy and husband Ed Brewster, Joan and husband Stanley
Mattes, Jerry and wife Tina; eight greatgrandchildren,
Allen,
Sarah, Julie, Janet, Jenna, Dana, Chelsea and Jared; many nieces and nephews.
As a
young girl she was united with the Calvary Methodist Church and at its closing
she moved her membership to the Clearfield and later to Lenox.
She always lived in the Clearfield area having lived
on their home farm for 49 years before retiring and moved into Lenox. She spent
the last eight years in the home of her daughter. One of her greatest joys was
watching her greatgrandchildren.

Lee Sprague, 56, Lenox, died Monday morning, Sept. 17, 1990 at Mercy Hospital
in Corning. Graveside services were held Wednesday at the West Fairview
Cemetery in Lenox with military rites by the American Legion Parkinson Post No.
250.
Mr.
Sprague was born November 21, 1933 in Lenox to Howard E. and Martha C.
(Stapleton) Sprague. He married Sheryl Curphey on
June
25,
1961 in Sharpsburg. He lived most of his life in the Lenox area. He was
employed by Barker Implement and was a member of the American Legion Parkinson
Post No. 250.
Survivors
include his wife Sheryl Sprague of Creston; and two sons, Howard Sprague of
Iowa City and Duane Sprague of Maryville, Mo.
He
was preceded in death by his parents and an infant daughter, Sherry Lee in
1962.

Lucille Leedom -
Lucille
Wynn, 68, of Ukiah, Calif, died Saturday, Dec. 8 at
Ukiah Valley Medical Center.
Mrs.
Wynn was born May 26, 1922 in Lenox, Iowa to Roy and Edith Leedom.
She attended school in the Lenox area. She lived in Creston for several years
working at cafes and the Woolworth Store. She moved to Ukiah 31 years ago
working at the Palace Hotel and the Gobbie St.
Laundromat for the last 19 years.
Survivors
include a son Fred McAfee; five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, one
sister, Darlene Winslow of Lenox; three brothers, Donald and Leonard Leedom of Ukiah and Edward of Newton, Iowa; and a host of
nieces and nephews.
She
was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Helen.
A
memorial service was held at the Ebersole Mortuary in
Ukiah on December 13. Interment will be at the Maytag Cemetery in Newton, Iowa
at a later date.
