Ashman of Oskaloosa, husband of the former Minnie Wurster,
died at the Iowa Methodist Medical
Center
in Des Moines on Sunday, Oct 28 after a lengthy illness.
Survivors
from Lenox include Mrs. Ashman's brother, Russell Wurster;
her sisters, Mrs. Vernon Crisp and
Mrs.
George Reynolds; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Mary Wurster.
Services
are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30 in Oskaloosa.

August 26, 1984.
He
is survived by two daughters, Beverly Fuller and Leona Orman,
both of Des Moines, Iowa.
The
family requests memorials to the cancer fund in lieu of flowers.
They
will meet friends at Stoaks Party room following the
services.

Charlie Berton Atkin, son of
Charles Barton Atkin and Nancy Jane Nicola Atkin, was born Oct. 27, 1899
in
Adams county, near Lenox, Iowa. He died
Sunday, Aug. 26, 1984 at Regency Care Center, Norwalk,
Iowa.
Charlie
spent most of his life farming in Taylor county, until retiring in 1975. After
his retirement, he
moved
to Marion, Iowa.
Charlie
was married to Viola Short Oct. 1, 1919. Four children were born to this union.
Survivors
include two daughters, Leota Orman and husband, Morris of West Des Moines, Iowa and Beverly
Fuller
and husband, Gerald also of Des Moines; two grandchildren, Kathleen Schmidt and
husband, Ted
of
Des Plaines, Illinois and Cadet Vernon C. Fuller of West Point, New York; two
sisters, Verna Schroeder of
Newberg,
Oregon and Mildred Smith of Idaho Falls, Idaho; and several nieces and nephews.
He
was preceded in death by his wife, two infant sons, his parents, five sisters
and three brothers.
Graveside services were held Sept 1 at
the West Fairview Cemetery in Lenox.

Walter Milo (Ollie) -
Walter
Milo Brokaw, the son of Charles and Mae Jones Brokaw, was born July 18, 1926 on
the family farm
located
in Adams county, IA. He died Monday, Dec. 3, 1984 at his home north of Lenox,
IA at the age of
58
years, four months, and 15 days.
"Ollie",
as he was known to everyone, attended rural schools until the fifth grade when
he transferred to
the
Lenox schools. He graduated with the Class of 1944. Following graduation, he
worked various jobs
around
Lenox before entering the Armed Forces as a paratrooper in 1949.
"Ollie" was a farmer and moved
to
his present home in 1954.
He
was united in marriage with Lola Inman in 1953.
"Ollie"
was a member of the Lenox .United Methodist Church, Parkinson Post #250 of the
Lenox
American
Legion, Rotary Club International of Lenox, and Tremont Lodge #343
A.F.&.A.M. In his earlier
years,
he played on and managed the town baseball team. His enjoyment of the sport
never lessened and
he
was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs. He also enjoyed bowling, playing cards
with his friends and
traveling
the country.
Survivors
include his wife, Lola of Lenox; his children, Martin Brokaw and wife Sheila of
Lenox. Debra
Holtan and husband Randy, Gail Neff and husband Tim, and Michael Brokaw, all of whom
live in Montana;
eight
grandchildren, his father, Charles Brokaw of Lenox; three sisters, Lucille Roe
of Stuart. IA, Lois
Brown
of Lenox and Catherine Gavend of Denver, CO; five
brothers, Glenn of Lenox, Harold of Des
Moines,
IA. Frank of South Bend, IN, Charles of Decatur, IL, and Paul of Lenox; as well
as many other
relatives
and friends.
Services
were held Thursday, Dec. 6 at 10:30 a.m. at the Lenox United Methodist Church
with Reverend
Lester Hesseltine, pastor, officiating.
Music
was by Norma Paymal, organist, who played "The
Battle Hymn of the Republic". Jon Brokaw. soloist,
sang
"The Lord's Prayer" and "The Wind Beneath My Wings".
Casket
bearers were Don Black, Orvin Bush, Herman Haering, Don Trost, Ralph Zabcl. and Dr. G. Keigh
Howland.
Graveside
services were conducted by Tremont Lodge and the Lenox American Legion Post.
Interment was in the North Fairview
Cemetery at Lenox.

Gertrude Phyllis Dunbar Swanson -
Gertrude
Phyllis Dunbar Brown, the daughter of Edgar Clyde and Ethel Edna Beadel Dunbar, was born
in
Lenox, IA on Mar. 15, 1921. She died at her home in Phoenix, AZ Sunday, Nov.
25, 1984 at the age of
63
years, 8 months and 10 days.
Phyllis
was raised in the Lenox community. She was a graduate of Lenox High School with
the Class of
1939.
She later received her teaching degree from Peru State in Peru, NE and began
her teaching career in
Lenox.
She also taught school in Red Oak, IA and in Phoenix, AZ where she retired from
the Washington
School
District in 1983.
In
1945, she was married to Byron C. Swanson of Red Oak. Following his death, she
was united in marriage
with
Bert Brown of Phoenix. He also preceded her in death.
Phyllis
was a member of the Lenox Christian Church, later transferring her membership
to the Christian
Church
in Red Oak.
Others
preceding her in death were her parents, three brothers, Lyle, Donald and Dick;
and two
sisters,
Dorothy in infancy and Maxine Schneider.
Survivors
include two sisters, Lenore Bailie of Lenox and Olive
Sutton and her husband, Kenneth of
Ottumwa,
IA; a brother, George Dunbar of Lenox; several nieces and nephews, and many
friends.
Services
were held Wednesday, Nov. 28 at Shadow Mountain Mortuary.

Burkhalter, Esther Marie -
Esther
Marie Burkhalter, third child of William and Louise Burkhalter, was born Feb. 13, 1910 near Council Bluffs. IA.
She died
Saturday,
Nov. 17, 1984 at the Greater Community Hospital in Creston, IA at 74 years of
age.
Esther
attended rural schools near Council Bluffs, was confirmed and joined St. Paul's
Evangelical Church there.
She
moved near Corning with her family in March, 1923. Esther attended Fairview
Church where she was an active worker.
She
was also active in the community until 1935 when she moved to the Mercer Center
area with her family. There
she
attended the Mercer Center Church and taught Sunday School for many years.
After
her mother passed away in 1945, she cared for her father and maintained the
family home. When her father retired
in
1948, they moved to Creston. She was a member of the United Methodist Church
and taught second and third
grade
in the Sunday School Department. Esther was honored recently for 35 years of
teaching. She was employed as secretary bookkeeper by A.V. Boyd and Sons,
retiring from that position in 1977.
Not
content to be idle and because she loved working with children, she began half
day employment at the Child Care Center
where
"Aunt Esther" was loved by all the children as well as the staff. A
broken wrist and hand surgery forced her to retire
from
the Day Care Center this past summer.
Esther
enjoyed gardening and raising flowers.
Following
her father's death in 1967, she remained in the family home until 1977 when she
moved to Regency Park where she
was
one of the first residents in the new apartment complex.
Esther
remained the hub of the family, recording all the births, weddings, deaths,
reunions, and interesting news items concerning
the
family. She was a favorite aunt of all her nieces and nephews.
Esther
was also a member of the Guild, Business and Professional Women's Club and the
Chamber of Commerce.
Preceding
her in death were her parents, one sister and two brothers-in-law.
Survivors
include three brothers, Arthur and wife, Merle, Edwin and wife, Eleanor and
Arnold and wife, Lavetta, all of Creston;
four
sisters, Rosenia Hunter of Burlington, IA, La Verne Bovaird and husband, Don of Prescott, Marie Brown and
husband, Darrel,
and
Lillian Brown and husband, Roscoe, all of Lenox; 32 nieces and nephews, 56
great nieces and nephews, as well as other relatives
and
friends.
Services
were held Tuesday, Nov. 20 at the United Methodist Church in Creston. Reverend
Roger Russell officiated.
Interment
was in the Graceland Cemetery at Creston.

Casket
bearers were Bob Reynolds, George Reynolds, Dale Purdum,
Dean Larimer, Terry Kolthoff, and Ralph Zabel.

Mrs.
Cain, the only child of Joel and Addie Baker, was born October 19, 1906 in
Texas. She died at the
Lenox
Care Center on Sunday, August 12 at the age of seventy-seven years, nine months
and twenty-three days.
Marjorie
had been a resident of the Care Center since April, 1984.
She
was united in marriage with Joseph Cain at San Diego, California November 10,
1946. They made their
home
in San Diego all of their married lives.
Marjorie
was employed as an abstractor at Union Title Company in San Diego until
quitting work to care
for
her husband when his health failed. He preceded her in death on May 14, 1968.
She moved to Lenox in
1977.
Survivors
include her brothers-in-law, Raymond Cain and wife, Thelma and Paul Cain, all
of Lenox; a
sister-in-law,
Mary Starry of Creston; their families; an aunt, Ethel Griggs of El Cajon,
California; three cousins;
and
many friends.

Denton,
Agnes Helena Sharp -
Agnes
Helena (Sharp) Denton, daughter of Jesse Barton Sharp and Jennie (Nelson)
Sharp, was born February 12, 1906
at
Severance, Kansas.
She
was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church at Denton and a former
member of Kappa Delta, Shenandoah,
Iowa
Chapter. She attended Severance, Kansas and Star Rural grade schools, and
graduated from Denton, Kansas
High
School with the class of 1924. She played center position her junior and senior
years for the champion Denton High
School
basketball team. Agnes received her teacher's certification from Emporia State
Teachers College and taught country
school.
She
was united in marriage to Chester Swartz Denton on May 3, 1925 at Severance.
Her great joy in life was her family.
Agnes
and Chester were loving parents. In addition to their own family, they were
like parents to many close relatives and
friends.
She is lovingly remembered by all as the peace maker.
Agnes
lived in farm communities in Kansas, Colorado, and Iowa, retiring to St.
Joseph, Missouri in 1973.
She
died Friday, Sept. 14, 1984 at Elm Heights Home for Senior Citizens in
Shenandoah, Iowa where she had been a resident
for
the past six years. She was 78 years old.
Preceding
her in death were her parents, Jess and Jennie Sharp; her husband, Chester
Denton; two brothers, Nelson and
Dennis
Sharp; one sister, Mary Rainwater; and one granddaughter, Cheryl Grant.
Surviving
are one sister, Mrs. Chris (Golda) Peterson of St. Joseph, Missouri; one
half-sister, Jessie Martinez of St. Joseph,
Missouri;
two sons, Byron Denton and wife, Carolyn, of LaMesa,
California and Keith Denton and wife, Jo Ann, of Bedford, Iowa;
two
daughters, Audrey and husband, Milford Gray, of Shenandoah, and Winnifred and husband, Richard Hanna, of Great
Bend,
Kansas; 10 grandchildren; and 17 greatgrandchildren.
Services
were held at the United Methodist Church in Denton, Kansas on Monday, Sept. 17
at 1 p.m. Words of comfort were
offered
by Reverend Harlan Kaden.
Organist
was Mary L. Johnson and the soloist was Crystal Connell. The memory register
was attended by Hilda Triplett.
Casket
bearers were Phillip Harrison, John Pauley, George Roberts, Tom Roberts, Gerald Scheutz, and Dennis Winchester.
Interment was in the Denton [Kansas]

DeyErmand, Don -
Don Dey Ermand, age 93, of Dalton, NE
died Monday, Oct. 1, 1984 in the Scottsbluff, NE hospital. Mr. Dey Ermand was born Dec. 28,
1890
at Lenox, IA. He was the son of Dr. William James and Lilian Healy Dey Ermand.
He
was united in marriage with Beulah Bullock Sept. 15, 1915 at Blair, NE. They
moved to Kimball, NE in 1917 where he was employed
at
the newspaper for three years. They moved to Dalton in 1920 and he was the
editor of the Dalton Delegate until 1940.
Don
became the Dalton postmaster in 1933, retiring from that position in 1960. He
was a weather observer for the U.S. Weather Bureau from 1925-1978. He received
a 50 year pin for his services when he retired.
Mr. Dey Ermand was known as Mr.
Dalton because of his longtime involvement in events and activities of that
community. He was a local
radio
announcer for a number of years, receiving the Ak-Sar-Ben Good Neighbor Award in 1961. Don was a member of
the church, the
Dalton
Fire Department, a charter member of the Dalton Lion's Club in 1945, and
publicity chairman for the Dalton Fall Festival.
Preceding
him in death were his wife and a son.
Survivors
include a grandson, Donald Dey Ermand and a granddaughter, Dorothy Dey Ermand,
both of Annapolis, MD; one
greatgranddaughter;
one brother, Leo Dey Ermand of Grand Island, NE; and a half-sister, Katherine Trotter of Philadelphia, PA.
Services
were held Thursday, Oct. 4 at 11 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Dalton. The
Reverend Don Littrell officiated. Mrs. Connie
Winkelman was the organist.

Bob,
the son of Augustus A. and Myrtle Devine Dunn, was born May 3, 1916 in
Washington township, Montgomery
county,
IA. He died at the Red Oak Hospital on Thursday, Nov. 22 at the age of 68
years, six months, and 19 days.
On
Sept. 20, 1940, he was united in marriage with Laurena Focht at Carroll, IA.
Bob
spent most of his life in the Villisca and Nodaway areas, holding a variety of
jobs until failing health
forced
his retirement in 1971. He served for more than five years with the National
Guard and seven
months
with the United States Army, during World War II. He was a member of the
Nodaway Methodist
Church,
having served on the board, was a past member of the Nodaway City Council and
was commander of
American
Legion Post 646 for nearly 12 years, a position he held at the time of his
death.
Preceding
him in death were his parents, a sister, Grace; and two brothers, Stanley and
Darwin.
Survivors
include his wife, Laurena; a daughter, Carolyn Sanburn of Lenox; three sons, Bobby, Jr. and wife,

Thomas
McKinley Grimm, the son of George and Sara Elliott Grimm, was born at
Sharpsburg, Iowa on Sept. 15, 1896.
He
died Monday, Sept. 10, 1984 at the Rosary Hospital in Corning, Iowa at the age
of 87 years, 11 months and 25 days.
Tom
grew to maturity in Sharpsburg. He was united in marriage with Mable Ruth Hayes
on May 25, 1922. He was a barber in
Sharpsburg
for 50 years, retiring from the profession in 1970.
He
attended the Presbyterian Church. Tom was a kind and considerate husband and
father and will be missed by all who
knew
and loved him.

him in death were his parents, two sisters, Maude Lepley and Hazel Ditto; and four brothers, Lloyd, Len, Ben,
and
Seaton.
Survivors
include his wife, Mable Ruth of Sharpsburg; three daughters, Mrs. Dora Hinton

Sluss, Helen Sarah Leckliter -
Helen
Sarah Sluss, the daughter of Oliver and Mary Ellen
Mercer Leckliter, was born Nov. 24, 1906 at
Prescott.
IA. She died Dec. 5, 1984 at the age of 78 years and 11 days.
Helen
grew to womanhood in Lenox and Des Moines. She attended Roosevelt High School
and Drake
University
in Des Moines and taught grade school there.
On
Aug. 17, 1929 she was married to Dr. Mark J. Sluss at
South Bend, IN. They moved to Lenox where
Dr. Sluss practiced medicine for 25 years while Helen
established the family home.
Following
their retirement in 1966, they moved to Sonoma, CA to live near their children,
Mary and John.
Helen
continued to be a wonderful homemaker and cook, baking cinnamon rolls, spoiling
her grandchildren
and
entertaining.
In
1973, following her husband's death, she moved to Glendale, CA and then returned
to Lenox in 1978.
Others
preceding her in death were her parents and one brother, John Glen in Oct.
1979.
Survivors
include her daughter, Mary Ann Pfleiderer and
husband, Lee of Magalia, CA; her son, John
Sluss of Glendale, CA; five grandchildren, Mark and Monte Sluss,
Lee Ann Eberle, and Mark and
Linda
Showers; one greatgrandchild, Christopher Sluss; as well as many good friends in Lenox, especially
members
of her potluck club group.

were held Sunday, Dec. 9 at 2 p.m. at the Lenox United Methodist Church.

Wiand, Francis M (Pete) -
Francis
M. Wiand, the son of Frank and Lulu Colegrove Wiand, was born near
Lenox, Iowa on Jan. 15, 1912. He died
at
Osceola, IA Wednesday, Oct. 10, 1984 at the age of 72 years, 8 months and 25
days.
"Pete",
as he was known by everyone, grew to manhood and lived all his life in the
Lenox community where he attended school.
On
Jan. 20, 1944, he was united in marriage with Inez Defenbaugh at Troy, KS. She preceded him in death on May 2, 1979.
Pete
was united in marriage with Alice Myers at Spirit Lake, IA on June 21, 1980.
They resided in Lenox and continued to be
active
in the community.
He
was a member of the Lenox United Methodist Church and was always a supporter of
the Lenox community. As a building
contractor,
he built many lovely and sturdy new homes in the area that attest to his skills
as a craftsman. The
continued
friendship with his customers stands as testimony to his fairness in his
dealings.

preceding him in death were his parents and a brother, Henry.

Alberta Cathryn Young, age 82 of Atlantic, Iowa, died Friday,
Sept. 21, 1984 at the Cass County Memorial
Hospital
in Atlantic. She was a resident of the Miller Nursing Home.
The
daughter of Albert N. and Lura Casey Bush, Alberta
was born Jan. 31, 1902 in Adams county, Iowa.
She
graduated from Lenox High School with the class of 1920 and taught rural school
for a few years.
In
1920, she moved to Los Angeles, California. She was united in marriage with L. Verne
McCloud
Sept.
18 of that year. He preceded her in death Dec. 25, 1965.
Mrs.
McCloud moved to Atlantic in 1969. She was united in marriage with Floyd Young
Nov. 30, 1969 in
Atlantic.
Alberta was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Survivors
include a grandson, David Wayne Green of Ben Lomond, California; a sister,
Merle Ostrus

of Atlantic; a step-son, Donald Young of Leon, Iowa; a stepdaughter, Mrs.
Robert (Marian)
Johnson

Denise Eileen Green;

sisters, Mrs. Judson (Florence) Caskey and Mrs. Floyd
(Alta) Young; and one brother, LaVerne A. Bush.
Visitation
was held Sunday evening, Sept. 23 at the Roland Funeral Home.
Graveside
services are pending at the Rose Hills Cemetery in Whittier, California.

rites for Evelyn McCain Young, age 90, of Columbia, MO were held Thursday, Oct.
18, 1984 at 3 p.m. at the Adams
Funeral
Home. Reverend Jean Hauter of the Collegiate
Presbyterian Church officiated.
Interment
was in the Garden Grove Cemetery, Garden Grove, IA at 11 a.m. Friday. Oct. 19.
Evelyn
was born Sept. 25, 1894 in Lacona, IA to A. Ross and
Cora Thompson McCain. She died Friday, Oct. 12 at the University of Missouri
Medical Center, Columbia. She had moved to Columbia six weeks prior to her
death.
Evelyn
graduated from Lenox High School in 1912 and from Monmouth College, Monmouth,
IL in 1918. She
taught
high school in Clearfield, IA and Garden Grove.
On
June 7, 1922, she was united in marriage with Glen W. Young at Lenox. They made
their home on a farm near Garden
Grove
before moving to Osage where she was active in the church, 4-H and other community
activities. In 1947, they
moved
to Ames, IA where she was employed at Mary Greeley Hospital for 34 years.
Evelyn was a practical nurse and also
did
special nursing care. Following her retirement, she served as a volunteer at
the hospital. She was a member of the
Collegiate
Presbyterian Church and a retired teacher's organization and was active in
community affairs.
Survivors
include a son, Ross Young of Columbia; two sisters, Bessie Henderson of Lenox
and Irene Nadelhoffer of Earley,
IA;
five
grandchildren, and four greatgrandchildren.
Preceding
her in death were her husband on June 28, 1955 and a four year old daughter,
Mary Ann in 1935.

Nina Lucille Reynolds -
Nina
Lucille Young, daughter of Henry Claude and Maude Anna Miller Reynolds, was
born Nov. 30. 1920 at Lenox, Iowa.
She
died at St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska Friday. Sept. 28, 1984 at the
age of 63 years. 9 months and 28 days.
Nina
grew up in the Lenox community and attended the local schools. She was united
in marriage with George Young at the Lenox
Methodist
Church on June 28, 1945.
Nina
was a member of the United Methodist Church, the American Legion Auxiliary, and
helped organize the Navy Mother's
Club.
She was a former member of the S.N. Club and was active in the Jolly Time Club
as her health permitted.
Preceding
her in death were her parents and her step-mother, Effie.
Survivors
include her husband, George of Lenox; her son, Ronald E. Young, and his wife,
Barbara of Omaha; three daughters, Carolyn
Mauderly and husband, Jerome, of Bedford, Linda Weeber and
husband, John, of Lenox and Lois Thompson and husband, Jerry, of
Creston;
ten grandchildren, Jennifer Lea, Ronda Jean and Stephen Scott Young, Douglas
Eugene and Sarah Ann Mauderly, John Christopher, Corina Jean and Cammi Jo Weeber, and Tracey Ann and Jamey Lawrence Thompson; a
brother, George
Reynolds
and wife, Ruth of Lenox; as well as other relatives and friends.
Nina's
family was the most important part of her life. The many happy times they spent
together will always be cherished.
Services
were held Monday, Oct. 1 at 1:30 p.m. at the Lenox United Methodist Church.
Reverend Lester Hesseltine officiated.
Music
was by Norma Paymal, organist, and Mildred Walter,
pianist. The selections were "How Great Thou Art", "In The
Garden"
and
"In The Sweet By and By".
Casket
bearers were Homer Teats worth, Darrell Reynolds, Vernal Thompson, Ron Fulk, Dale Purdum, .and Lanny Douglas.
Honorary
bearers were Francis Goldsmith and Russell Dukes.
Interment
was in the West Fairview Cemetery at Lenox.
