Arnold, Flora Ferguson -

Flora Ferguson Arnold, 89, of Des Moines, Iowa died April 7, 1990 from respiratory ailment. Graveside services were held in Lenox, Iowa. Burial in Fairview Cemetery.

Flora was the sixth child born to Janet and George Ferguson on a farm south of Lenox where she spent most of her early life.

She taught school many years before entering the military service. She served three years as a WAC. Most of that time in the European Theatre under commandership of General Dwight D. Eisenhower in World War II.

Flora made her home in San Francisco, Calif. eight years. After she married O.P. Pete" Arnold of Lenox she moved to Des Moines, Iowa.

Flora was a member of the Highland Park Christian Church, Auburn Eastern Star, Daughter of the Nile.

She was preceded in death by her husband Pete, four sisters and three brothers.

Survivors include a step son Jay P. Arnold and a host of nieces and nephews.

The family suggests any memorial contributions be made to the United Presbyterian Church of Lenox.

Barrans, George -

Funeral services for George Barrans were held at the United Methodist Church in Lenox February 23, 1990 with Rev. Paul Grandon officiating. Burial was at West Fairview Cemetery, Lenox, Iowa.

George Barrans, son of William and Marge VanHouten Barrans was born January 20, 1902 on the family farm called "Clovermead" south of Lenox, Iowa and entered into rest at the Clearview Home in Clearfield, Iowa at the age of 88 years and one month. [Feb. 20, 1990]

His childhood was spent on this farm where he attended rural school through the eighth grade and then attended and graduated from Lenox High School.

On December 21, 1930 George was united in marriage with Edra Litteer at Bedford, Iowa. Two children were born to bless this union. They made their home at Clovermead where they engaged in farming and later moved to Lenox to open a filling station, trucking

service and grain elevator in addition to continuing to farm.

He was a long-time member of the Methodist Church at Lenox, and also served several years as mayor of Lenox. He was a kind and generous man and quietly shared with others his worldly goods and helpfulness. He loved children and animals and derived much

pleasure from his family, his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

After his retirement, George and Edra continued to live in Lenox until failing health made it necessary for him to move to the Clearview

Home in Mt. Ayr, Iowa in 1983, and later that same year to the Clearview Home at Clearfield, Iowa where Edra joined him in 1985. They received love and care, and even with his many health problems George always kept his keen sense of humor.  Edra passed away in 1986 but he still had "family" with his sister being at the Clearview home also.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Edra, and infant brother and a brother William Barrens.

George is survived by his children, William Barrans and his wife Marion of Lenox, Iowa, and Wilma Hughes and her husband Glen of Conway, Iowa; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; his sister, Nellie McGrath of Clearfield, Iowa; two brothers, Clifford of Chewelah, Wash, and James of Hawaii; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Bloom, C L (Kelly) -

On May 3, 1990 Mr. C.L. "Kelly" Bloom, age 68, passed away in New Jersey where he lived. He was in Hospital Research work. Burial was in New Jersey.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Nellie and Earl Bloom, Sr.; a brother Dennis and two sons, Mark and Scott.

He is survived by a daughter Kathy in California; her three sons, Brent and twins Chris and Vance; and grandchildren; his wife Mary in New Jersey; three sisters Eileen Lilly, Fannie Kapfer and Doris Marleta Bloom of Greenfield; three brothers, Earl Bloom Jr.

in Kansas; and Warren and Wayne in Iowa.

Brown, Francis -

Francis Brown of Prescott, Iowa died February 3, 1990 at Mercy Hospital in Corning, Iowa.

Mr. Brown was born November 24, 1900 in Adams County to Frank and Anna Vetterick Brown. He married Vera Grouse on March 18, 1925 at Corning, Iowa. He was a lifelong resident of Adams County,  moving to Prescott in 1977. He was a farmer and stockman.

He is survived by one daughter, Radene and husband Wilbur Rasmussen of Prescott; five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, two sisters and two grandchildren.

Services were held February 6, 1990 at the Prescott United Church with Rev. Jeanne Groom officiating. Burial was at the Mt. Zion Cemetery in Prescott.

Crouch, Veryla Lou Henderson -

Veryla Lou Crouch, 59, of Bloomington, Ind. died Thursday, March 1, 1990 at a hospital in Bloomington, Ind. Funeral services and burial were at Bloomington.

Veryla Lou Crouch was born December 21, 1930 in Taylor County to Earl McKinley and Susie Fearnot Henderson. She graduated from

the Lenox High school and attended a Business School in Omaha, Neb., later moving to Bloomington, Ind. where she had employment at RCA.  She married Richard Crouch in Indiana.

Survivors are her mother, Susie M. Henderson at Clearview Nursing Home at Clearfield; one daughter, Susie G. Henderson of Bloomington; and one son, David E. of Bloomington.

She was preceded in death by her father, and a brother, Melvin E Henderson.

Jensen, Donald LaVerne -

Funeral services for Donald L. Jensen were held Wednesday, March 14, 1990 at the First Christian Church in Lenox with Rev. Carl Cummings officiating. Burial was at North Fairview Cemetery, Lenox, Iowa.

Donald LaVerne Jensen was born June 13, 1914 in Defiance, Iowa, the son of Peter Christian and Mette Kirstina Gregersen Jensen. He died Sunday, March 11, 1990 at his home at the age of 76 years, eight months, and 28 days.

He graduated from Defiance High School and on May 27, 1936, he married Ruby A. Wetzel at Defiance. They lived in Defiance from 1936 to 1941, Buck Grove from 1941 to 1944, Irwin from 1944 to 1951, Bloomfield from 1951 to 1957 Audubon from 1957 to 1979,

when they moved to Lenox.

Don farmed, worked in a steel fabrication plant, and ministered in several churches. He retired in 1979. He was a member of the Lenox Christian Church, a Green Valley Hospice volunteer, and a member of the care committee at the Lenox Care Center.

He is survived by his wife Ruby of Lenox; three daughters: Lois E. and Larry Hoch of Des Moines; Janice L. McCombs of Phoenix, Az.; Rose Ann and Clark Kester of Aurora, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and a sister Edna Smith of Harlan, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and four sisters.

Johnston, Lavida Mae Soudek -

Funeral services for Lavida Mae Johnston were held at Keating-Lindsay Golden Rule Funeral Home in Creston April 30 officiated by Rev. Shirley Lockard. Burial was at Graceland Cemetery. She died April 27, 1990.

Lavida Mae Johnston was born May 16, 1911 in Creston, Iowa to Andrew A Fredricksen and Anne B. Soudek. She married August Delmar Johnston August 17, 1930. She lived most of her life in Taylor and Ringgold Counties until moving to Creston in 1976. She was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Platte Center Presbyterian Church, past president of Prairie Star Ladies Aid Society, Kent, past president and treasurer, Lenox Band Boosters.

Those left to cherish her memory are one daughter, Mary Ann Richardson (Merwyn), Omaha, Neb.; two grandchildren and two great

grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Helen Overholzer (Stanley), Diagonal, Iowa.

Lillie, Susan Kay -

Susan Kay Lillie, 33, Lenox, died Thursday, March 16, 1990 at Greater Community Hospital in Creston. Graveside services were 11

am. Saturday, March 17 at North Fairview Cemetery Lenox. The Rev. Paul Grandon officiated.

Miss Lillie was born July 20, 1956 in Corning to Earl and Bessie (Lewis) Lillie. She graduated from Lenox High school and was a homemaker.

Survivors include two children, Jennifer and Jason, both at home; her parents, Earl and Bessie Lillie of Lenox; two sisters, Barbara Shehan, Lenox and Virginia Swank of Chillicothe, Mo; and a brother, Michael Lillie of Lenox.

Lloyd, Katharine Findley VanHouten -

Katharine Findley Lloyd, who shaped a love for poetry with her husband and who was an early supporter of the Kah Tai Lagoon Park project, died May 10 in her Port Townsend home. She was 96.

Mrs. Lloyd was born Feb. 24, 1894 at Indianapolis, Ind., the daughter of Ida May and John Findley. She grew up in Indianapolis, attending Shortridge High School and Butler College, graduating in the class of 1916.

She married W.C. VanHouten of Lenox, Iowa, in Indianapolis June 25, 1926.  Their first home was in Lenox where Mr. Van Houten was an

attorney. He died in a New Year's Day 1938 automobile accident. She continued living at Lenox until 1946 when she moved to Cheney, Wash. On Nov. 8, 1947 she married Allen Henry Lloyd, a long-time resident of Port Townsend, formerly of Indianapolis and Butler College. Mrs. Lloyd had been  a close friend of Mr. Lloyd's first wife who died in 1939. Mr. Lloyd died in 1982.

The Lloyds shared a love of poetry, expressed to friends in the couple's annual Christmas letter. A number of Mrs. Lloyd's poems won awards and were published in a variety of anthologies. Many were collected and published in 1985 in time for her 91st birthday in a

book, "Love Is The Meaning", edited by her daughter Helen.

The couple, at ages 80 for Katharine and 88 for Allen, traveled to Kenya, Africa in 1974.

Mrs. Lloyd was an active member of the Unitarian Fellowship of Port Townsend, was a member of the Great Books Club and the Port Townsend Garden Club. She enjoyed the expansive view from her Port Townsend home, maintaining it was the "beat spot on earth."

Her concern for the environment was reflected by her work to get Kah Tai Lagoon Park established.

Surviving are her three children, Helen Van Houten now working in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; John Van Houten of Livingston, Mont., and Mary Conitz of Deary, Idaho; three stepchildren, Edward Lloyd of Solatia Beach, Calif., Helen Call of San Diego, Calif., and Iris Lloyd

of Reston, Va.; nine grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and two step grandchildren, a brother, Albert Paul Findley, and a sister,

Helen Findley Gillman, preceded her in death.

Burial was May 12 in Washelli Cemetery, Seattle. A memorial service is scheduled May 17 at 2 p.m. in Kosex Funeral Home, Port Townsend, with a reception following at the Lloyd family home in Port Townsend The family suggests memorial contributions to Jefferson County Land Trust, P.O. Box 1610, Port Townsend, Wa. 98368 for the Lloyd memorial.

McCall, Hugh Ira -

Funeral services for Hugh Ira McCall were held Tuesday, May 29 at the First Christian Church in Lenox, officiated by Rev. Carl Cummings. Interment was at North Fairview Cemetery, Lenox, Iowa.

Hugh Ira McCall, the son of Hugh and Eugenia Sheeder, was born December 20, 1917 on a farm near Diagonal and died May 26, 1990 at his home in Lenox after a long illness.

He was 72 years, four months and 26 days of age.

On Sept. 9, 1940 Hugh was united in marriage to Maxine Payne at Grant City, Mo. To this union three children were born: Hugh Franklin,

Gary Eugene and Maria Ray.

Hugh was a farmer and a carpenter for all of his life. He lived as a young boy in the Diagonal area. He attended country school in the grades and Diagonal High School and graduated with the class of 1936.

Hugh received a lot of joy from the sport of hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed visiting his sons and grandchildren in Texas and Colorado.  He had been in failing health for the last 12 years.

Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Maxine, his two sons, Hugh and wife Ardith of Dallas, Texas; Gary and wife  Bobbi of Fairplay, Colo.; four grandchildren, Shannon, Chad, Damon and Sean; brother Mac and wife Nina and sister Myrtle Hukill of Des Moines; also

surviving are many other friends and relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter.

Smith, Lawrence M (Larry) -

Lawrence "Larry" M. Smith, 45, died Saturday, March 10 in Newport, Oregon. He was born in Philadelphia on April 21, 1944, and lived and attended schools in many locations while his father was in the United States Navy.

He received a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Iowa State University in 1966. He attended Oregon State University, then transferred to the University of Iowa where he received his doctorate in physical organic chemistry.

He married Jean Walter of Lenox, Iowa in 1968 and they moved to Beaverton, Oregon in 1976 where Mr. Smith worked on his post doctorate. He then accepted a position with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Department in Columbia, Mo. In 1986 they moved to Corvallis,

Oregon, he worked as a research chemist for the Environmental Protection Agency at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport. He was a member of the American Chemical Society, the Sierra Club and various other environmental groups. He loved the outdoors and participated in many sports. He was a loving father and a true companion.

Survivors include his wife, Jean W. Smith; his son, Danny Smith of Corvallis; daughters, Lisa Smith of Eugene and Julie Smith of Corvallis; his parents, Lawrence and Helen Smith of Cherokee Village, Arkansas; one sister, Becky Harrison of Steamboat Springs,

Colorado; and two brothers, Tom Smith of Camp Pendleton, California, and Jon Smith of Narragansett, Rhode Island.

Memorial services were held Thursday, March 15 in the chapel of the McHenry Funeral Home in Corvallis.

Smith, Mamie Louise Curtis -

Mamie Louise Curtis Smith, 94, of Lenox, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 1990 at the Lenox Care Center.

Mrs. Smith was born April 14, 1895 in Virginia, Neb. to Paul B. and Aleda C (Yarpe) Nielson. She married David C. Curtis Oct. 20, 1917 in Beatrice, Neb., and moved to Lenox in 1936. Dave died in 1948. She married Gordon Smith October 14, 1957, in Lincoln, Neb. and they lived in Nebraska. He died on April 11, 1967 and Mamie moved back to Lenox. She had resided at the Lenox Care Center for the last

five years.

She was a 60-year member of Golden Rule No. 134 of the Rebekah Lodge at Bedford, long-time member of the Methodist Church, American Legion Auxiliary Parkinson Unit 250, Eastern Star in Nebraska, UMW Women's Society of the Methodist Church, former

member of Sunnyside Club and member of Nifty-Ninety Club at the Care Center.

Mamie was a hard worker and worked many years at the former Copeland-Wells Locker Plant and for Fred and Vera Strunce when they took over the locker plant. She worked in restaurants in the area and hung wallpaper for many. The job was sure to get done when

Mamie was in charge. She always had a helping hand for anyone in need. She enjoyed giving - much more than receiving.  She was a strong and faithful service in her church and community.

One of Mamie's specialties was baking pies and bread puddings for her neighbors and friends.

She enjoyed the weekly trips to Clearfield for Congregate Meals with her many friends.

The great legacy she left behind to all that had the privilege to know her was her genuine love for all, her sunny personality, her sense of humor and her love for children.

Services were held Wednesday at 11 am. at the United Methodist Church in Lenox. The Rev. Paul Grandon officiated the service. The Rebekah Lodge had services at the church.

Survivors include two sisters, Elva Dunkle of Pottsboro, Tx. and Esther Sullivan of North Platte, Neb.; several nieces and nephews;

and her many friends who have shared their lives with her. Besides her two husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and a sister, three step-sons.

Tripp, Grace Mary -

Funeral services for Grace Mary Tripp were held Wednesday, April 25, 1990 at the United Presbyterian Church in Lenox with Rev. Don Fisher officiating. Interment was at Morgan Cemetery, Kent, Iowa.

Grace Mary Tripp, daughter of William F. and Mary Francis Tripp, attended rural and Kent Schools, graduated from Corning Academy and attended Drake University. She taught school for 14 years but gave up teaching to be a homemaker for her father and younger brother after the death of her mother. Grace lived on the farm where she was born until moving to Lenox, Iowa in 1971. She moved to the Clearfield Care Center in October, 1983. Grace became a member of the Prairie Star Church as a young girl, serving in many

capacities until her membership was transferred to Lenox United Presbyterian Church.

Her gracious influence to those who knew and loved her through the years is cognate to many. Grace's positive attitude about her church, family, community, and world touched everyone.

Family members include nieces and nephews Robert Rhoades, Frances Moyle, Florence Garrick, Jeanne Ostrem, Jean Ide, Betty Mathers and David Tripp; 15 great nieces and nephews and one great great niece and nine great great nephews and special cousin David Tripp.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Jessie Tripp and Ruth Rhoades and three brothers, Dayton, Harry and Ralph Tripp.

Tripp, Grace Mary -

Grace Mary Trip, the oldest child of William F. and Mary Francis Tripp was born on a farm south of Kent, Iowa in Adams County on August 6, 1886. She died at the Clearfield Care Center on April 21, 1990 at the age of 103 years, eight months and 15 days.

Grace attended Grant #7 in Adams County through eighth grade and graduated from the Corning Academy in June of 1907. She also attended Drake University. Grace was a teacher for 14 years but gave up her teaching career to maintain the family home after the

death of her mother.

Grace's positive attitude influenced many people and some were her students and others were family members and friends through church and community.

Grace walked six miles to vote the first time women were allowed to vote and never missed voting since that time.

Her spiritual life was important to her. Grace was a life long member of the Prairie Star Presbyterian Church and her membership was transferred to the Lenox Church when the two merged.

Grace was considered the matriarch of the family and wrote the Tripp genealogy at the age of 86.

Grace enjoyed traveling and visited Alaska, Hawaii and spent a number of winter months in California and Washington. She considered it a blessing to be an Iowa resident where she could enjoy nature.

Grace was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Dayton, Harry and Ralph and two sisters, Jessie and Ruth Tripp Rhoades. She is survived by two nephews, Robert Rhoades, Lenox; David Tripp, Kent; and five nieces, Frances Moyle, Lenox; Florence Garrick,

Tacoma, Wash.; Jeanne Ostrem, Ames, Iowa; Jean Ide, Creston, Iowa; Betty Mathers, Grimes, Iowa; 15 great nieces and nephews, one great great niece and nine great great nephews; one cousin, David Tripp of Wichita, Kan. and a number of Francis family, cousins and friends.

Funeral services were held April 25, 1990 at the Lenox United Presbyterian Church, Rev. Don Fisher, officiating. Interment was in Morgan Cemetery, Kent, Iowa

Walter, Vern -

Funeral services for Vern Walter, Corning, were held March 24, 1990 at the Corning United Methodist Church with Rev. Donald Strickler and Elmer West officiating. Burial was at Oak Hill Cemetery, Corning. Mr. Walter died March 20 at his home.

Vern Walter was born April 9, 1928 in Adams County, Iowa to Homer A. Walter and Pauline Notz. He married Charlotte Brown June 15, 1956. As a young boy he lived in Lenox, but then spent the rest of his life in the Corning area. He owned and operated his own lime hauling business for 35 years and also farmed.

To this union were born two daughters, Mrs. Judy Jones (Clifford), East Wenatchee, Wa., Mrs. Bonnie Boswell (Fred), Corning and two sons, David "Pete" Walter, East Wenatchee, Wa. and Karl Walter, Clarinda.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Corning and Corning, Prescott and Nodaway Saddle Clubs. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Charlotte; children; eight grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Coleen Wilkinson (Larell), Lenox; stepmother, Mrs. Beatrice Walter, Lenox.

Walter, Wray L -

Funeral services for Wray L. Walter were held February 28, 1990 at Salem Church of the Brethern, Lenox, Iowa. Interment was at North Fairview Cemetery, Lenox, Iowa.

Wray L. Walter was born December 6, 1899 in Adams County, Mercer Township; to Henry O. and Jessie L. Wray Walter. He married Florence M. Riley on June 7, 1922 at her parents home near Mercer Center.

He was an active member of the Salem Church of the Brethern of rural Lenox most of his life except when he spent a year in California. He lived most of his life on farms in Adams and Taylor Counties before retiring to Lenox in 1964. He still enjoyed rides in the country and checking on the crops. He always kept in contact with the farm life.

Wray passed away at the home of his daughter Carolyn on Sunday, Feb. 25, 1990 of a heart attack.

He is survived by his daughters Carolyn Herman and Barbara Wilson; sons-in-law:  Jerry Herman of Lenox and Delmar Wilson of Corning;

three grandchildren: Rosalie, Scott and Kevin Wilson of Corning; one brother: Dale Walter and his wife Margaret of Prescott; a sister Ruth Hettinger of Mesa, Az.; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Florence in 1979, and a brother Louis.
