Mark
Churchill, 31, of Bedford, was killed Monday morning in a two-vehicle accident
five miles north of Maryville.
Churchill,
the father of two young children, was enroute to the
first day of class in Northwest Missouri State University's spring
semester
at the time of the accident. A passenger in the car, Lea A. Scroggie,
20, of Bedford, suffered a fractured shoulder in the
accident.
The
fatal accident occurred within 30 minutes of another serious accident on
Highway 146 north of Maryville. That earlier
accident,
which left a Maryville man seriously injured, played a role in the sad set of
circumstances that led to Churchill's mishap.
Churchill
and Miss Scroggie were enroute to college classes when they discovered the road was blocked from the earlier
accident.
They
apparently reversed direction at the Highway 148-Route CC curve just north of
Maryville and were northbound when the accident occurred.
A
1972 Dodge pickup truck driven by Linda K. Smith, 24, Pickering, was the other
vehicle involved in the fatality accident.
According
to the Missouri State Patrol accident report, Mrs. Smith was southbound on 148
when she was forced to swerve her pickup in
an
attempt to miss another turning vehicle. The Smith pickup then skidded sideways
into the northbound lane into the path of the
1974
Toyota driven by Churchill.
The Nodawuy County Sheriffs Department received a report of the accident at 7:59 a.m. (the Missouri State
Patrol report and several
media
reports incorrectly indicated the accident occurred before 7 a.m.
Churchill,
who was most recently employed at Bedford Super Valu grocery story, was pronounced dead on arrival at St. Francis Hospital in
Maryville. Both he and Miss Scroggie were wearing
seatbelts at the time of the accident, according to the accident report.
Travis
Smith, a passenger in the pickup truck and husband of the driver, was seriously
injured. The accident report indicated he suffered a concussion, fractured
right leg, fractured back and fractured right arm.
