Christensen, Jaysen Ray -

Pulham, Jaret Mont -

Roundy, Daniel Byrne -

Savage, Bradley Alan -

Heckathorn, Herman -

Perhaps you saw them around town; two nice looking, clean cut, young men dressed

in white shirts and ties wearing name tags and explaining that they were

missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Perhaps you

talked with them or they knocked on your door to ask if you would be willing

to learn more about the gospel of Jesus Christ. Their passing will never be filled.

Four missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Daly Saints, along

with an elderly man from Murray, Iowa, were killed in an automobile accident on

Friday, Jan. 28. The accident occurred eight miles west of Osceola on Highway

34 at approximately 2:30 p..m.

The missionaries were returning to Lenox from a church broadcast. Two of the

missionaries, Elder Jaysen Ray Christiansen and Elder Jared Mont Pulham were

living and serving in Osceola. Elder Daniel Byrne Roundy and Elder Bradley Alan

Savage were living and serving in Lenox.

The accident occurred when the driver of the missionary car attempted to pass

another westbound vehicle. The wheels dropped off the edge of the

pavement, and the driver overcorrected and lost control. The collision was with

a pickup truck driven by Herman Heckathorn, age 90, from Murray. Both vehicles

burst into flames, and all five perished in the accident.

It is customary from young Latter Day Saint men to voluntarily serve two years

as a missionary for their church. They often start saving money from a very early

age in order to serve a mission for their church. All of the living expenses while

they are on a mission are paid for by their own savings and help from family.

Last fall, it was found that there are a fairly large number of members of the

Church of Latter Day Saints living in this area, and many were driving long

distances to attend church. It was decided to start a branch of the church

in Lenox, and the missionaries were sent to assist. These young missionaries

will be missed by all who knew them.

Elder Daniel Byrne Roundy from Kaysville, Utah, always had a big smile. He

enjoyed joking and having fun, but was very dedicated to his religious

convictions. He was  the only son in a family of four children. His  sister

just completed serving a mission in New Jersey and was due to arrive home

on Tuesday. Elder Roundy enjoyed sports in high school. He was active in

basketball, soccer, wrestling, and enjoyed snowboarding and water skiing.

He was 19 years old and had attended one year at Rick's College in Idaho

before coming to serve as a missionary in Iowa. Elder Roundy came to live

in Lenox last fall.  Elder Savage had been living in Lenox for about one week.

He was also very dedicated to his religious convictions. Elder savage was

20 years old. He was a three-time state champion of the Utah state

high school 3 A platform diving competition. After completing his two

years as a missionary, he had a college diving scholarship waiting for him.

Elder Christiansen and Elder Pulham were serving and living in Osceola.

Both were 20 years old. Elder Pulham had a new baby brother, born a

week before the accident, who he had never seen. He had been on his

high school chess team, enjoyed ballroom dancing, and had restored a

car prior to coming on his mission. Elder  Christiansen enjoyed band in

high school and was an avid Star Trek fan.

A memorial service was held for the four missionaries and for Mr.

Heckathorn at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Des

Moines on Sunday, Feb 6.
