Arends, Wyatt Jr -
Wyatt Arends Jr., age 58, of Maloy,
formerly of Jewell, died Friday, May 23 at his home in Maloy of a heart
attack.
Funeral services were Tuesday, May 27, 1997, at 1:30 p.m. at the Community
Church in Kamrar with Pastor Craig
A. Bex and Pastor Gerald Naber officiating. Burial will be in the First Presbyterian Cemetery in Kamrar.
Wyatt
was born June 21, 1938, in Webster City to Wyatt W. and Margaret (Tempel) Arends. He married Rita
R.
Madsen
on February 4, 1956, at the Little Brown Church in Nashau.
Wyatt had lived in the Kamrar and Jewell area until 2
years
ago when he moved to Maloy. He was a farmer and
antique dealer. His interests were mechanics, hunting fishing,
Indian
artifacts history and antique cars.
He
is survived by his wife, Rita of Maloy; a son,
Shannon W. Arends and wife Chris of Diagonal; 2
daughters, Carrie
Ann
Robb and husband Richard of Iowa Falls and Kellie Jo Arends and friend Lorn Cavan of
Jewell; 3 grandchildren,
Breann Marie, Logan Wyatt, and Baylee Nichole Arends; a brother, Eldon G. and wife Carolyn Arends of Jewell; his mother,
Margaret Arends of Webster City; several nieces and nephews.
He
is preceded in death by his father Wyatt in 1961. Visitation was held Monday,
May 26th at the Becker Funeral Home
in
Jewell.

Eugene Blake was born May 16, 1929 in rural Taylor County near Conway, Iowa to
George and Irene
Phillips
Blake and entered into rest at the Lenox Care Center at the age of 68 years, 1
month and 9 days.
Howard
spent all of his life in Taylor County except for the time spent in the Panama
Canal Zone serving in
the
Signal Corps during the Korean War.
Howard
was engaged in farming and took great pride in his cattle and grain crops.
On
August 19, 1968 he was united into marriage with Lillie Million in Maryville,
Mo. He was a member of the Lenox
American
Legion and was baptized by the Reverend Al Rusk.
Surviving
to honor his memory are; his wife Lillie Blake of Lenox, two brothers James
(wife Martha) of North
Pole,
Alaska and Allen (wife Norma) of Charleston, South Carolina, three sisters;
Dorothy B. Coulthard of West Des
Moines,
Marian Howes of Eagleville, Missouri, Ava (husband
Dale) Wearmouth of Lorimor,
Iowa as well as many
nephews
and nieces.
He
was preceded in death by his parents; George and Irene Blake, mother-in-law;
Barbara (Padget) Millon,
sister-in-law;
Lela (Million) Kitterman, brother-in-law; Lela Howes, nephew; Allen Doyle Blake and niece; Rebecca
Blake.
Services
were held Friday, June 27, 1997 at 10:30 a.m. at Larkin and Shelley Funeral
Home. Officiating was Rev. Al
Rusk,
Pastor at Sharpsburg United Methodist Church.

Hobert C Briggs, 88 of Gravity, Iowa died Friday night, June 27, 1997 at his rural
Gravity home.
He
was born May 13, 1909 at Guss, Iowa, the son of H.F.
(Todd) and Pearl Grace Fidler Briggs. On January 26,
1935
he married Elizabeth Mary Ziehe who preceded him in
death on June 13, 1993.
They
farmed in Adams and Taylor counties where they raised their family.
Hobert Briggs is survived by three children, Robert G. Briggs and wife Donna of
Clarinda, Iowa, Marguerite
Davis
and husband Rex of Gravity, Iowa and Karen Sue Larson, Gravity, Iowa. There are
seven grandchildren and
ten
great grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother, Lowell Briggs, Camdenton,
Missouri, three half brothers, Ralph
Briggs,
Clearfield, Iowa, Floyd Briggs, Winchester, Kansas, Frank Briggs, Farragut,
Iowa and a half sister, Mary Gohn,
Madrid,
Iowa.
He
was preceded in death by parents, wife, and brothers, Ernest, David and Emory.
Funeral
services were held Tuesday, Jury 1, 1997 at Walker Merrick Funeral Home with
Rev. Tracey Chamberlain
officiating.
Burial was in the Maple Grove Cemetery at Guss.

Bruington, Tedford L -
Tedford L. Bruington, 87, of Lenox, Iowa died May 30, 1997 at
his home.
Tedford was born June 21, 1909 east of Lenox, to Harry Bruington and Blanch Tedford.
He
was married to Gertrude Belle Hale on May 26, 1934 at Clarinda, Iowa.
He
farmed South of Lenox before moving to town later. He traveled with Hale's
Shows of Tomorrow till 1950.
They
moved to Kansas City, MO and worked as a Mixologist at Guston-Baron until retiring in 1972. Moved
back
to Lenox and did painting for a while and mowed yards for family and friends.
Survivors
include two sons, Gordon "Skip" and wife Mardoe Bruington of Lenox and Wayne Dale and wife
Julie Bruington of Kansas City, MO. Daughter Gloria Jean
and Husband Tony Arnone of Jupiter, Florida. Four
grandchildren,
4 stepgrandchildren, 6 greatgrandchildren and 8 step-great grandchildren. Preceded in
death
by wife Gertrude in 1996, a brother Ray and sister Grace.
Services
will be held Wednesday, June 4 at 11:00 a.m. at the Lenox United Methodist
Church with Pastor
Audrey Westendorf officiating.
Kathryn
Wilson as organist will provide, the music.
Pallbearers
are Alvin Brown, Mark Bruington, Brent Bruington, Fred Helm, Michael Copeland, and Reldon
Huntington.
Burial

Callahan, Robert S -
Robert
S. Callahan was born September 15, 1916 to Florence and Alfred Callahan in
Shenandoah, Iowa and
entered
into rest in Madrid, Iowa at the age of 81 years, 9 months, and 10 days.
He
spent his early years in Imogene, moving to Shenandoah at the age of twelve
after the death of his father.
Bob
attended Shenandoah High School where he lettered in football, basketball and
track. However, it was after a
group
of bullies tried to beat him up that he found his true calling; boxing.
Determined to never to be picked on again
Bob
learned how to box and became one of the finest Bantamweight boxers in the midwest. Fighting under the
name
"Irish Bobby" Callahan would eventually win Golden Glove and CYO
titles in Omaha, Des Moines, Cedar
Rapids,
Chicago, and Kansas City.
At
the height of his boxing career he was asked to compete in the National Team
Trails in Kansas City where he
finished
as a runner-up and invited to fight on the National Golden Gloves Team in
Oklahoma City.
After
graduating from Shenandoah High School in 1936 Callahan was invited to move to
Lenox and train with
the
local boxing team prompted by Ralph Hayes and headlined by George Hayes.
Throughout
most of his life Bob was a very involved in the Knights of Columbus and the
Catholic Church. He
served
several years as the Grand Knight of the Corning Chapter and for many years
worked for the Retarded
Association
and was a fixture in the annual Tootsie Roll Drive.
After
moving to Lenox Bob met his wife-to-be, the former Ruby Gray. Bob and Ruby were
married on November
26,
1939. Ruby died in 1983.
Bob
farmed south of Lenox for many years, and he and Ruby had five children.
Surviving
to honor his memory are; Mary Patricia (husband Dale) Young of Madrid, Iowa,
Robert (Mike) (wife Kathy) Callahan of
Salina,
Kansas, Kevin (wife Karen) Callahan of Landberg,
Pennsylvania and Stacy Brown of St. George, Kansas, 16
grandchildren
and 6 great grand children.
Preceding
him in death are his parents, wife Ruby Callahan in 1983 and daughter Margaret
Ann Schmidt.
Services
were held Saturday, June 28, 1997 at St. Patricks Catholic Church. Officiating was Father Dan
Siepker,
Pastor St. Patricks Church.
Casket
Bearers were Terry Young, Jerry Young, Ron Wurster,
Clyde Belding, Mike Callahan, Gary Freeman,
and
Harry Freeman. Music was provided by Bonnie Halligan and Marilyn Rychnovsky.

Derma
Jean Keller was born January 14, 1930 to Glenn and Opal Waddell Keller at Tingley, Iowa. She was the
fourth
of eight children.
While
Jean was growing up she and her family lived in Diagonal, Kellerton,
and Shannon City, Iowa.
On
April 16, 1953 she was united in marriage to Dale Martin Campbell in Des
Moines, Iowa. To this union was born
seven
children.
During
Jean's life she and her family lived in Mount Ayr,
Iowa; Clearfield, Iowa; Wyoming, Nebraska and even in
British
Columbia, Canada.
Jean
was preceded in death by her father Glenn, mother Opal, infant brother Glenn,
brother Donald and her
father-in-law
Joe Campbell. Left to mourn her memory are her husband Dale of Clearfield,
Iowa; children Jody Turnhull
and
husband Steve of Alpina, Arkansas; Jack Campbell and
wife Cindy of Clearfield, Iowa; Jerry Campbell of El Paso,
Texas;
Jill Breach and husband Roger of Sharpsburg. Iowa; Jimmy Campbell of Des
Moines, Iowa; Joey Campbell of
Clearfield,
Iowa; Jay Campbell and wife Teresa of Maryville, Missouri and step-daughter,

She
had a positive attitude to end of her battle with cancer and departed this life
on June 13, 1997 at Clearview Home,
Clearfield,
Iowa at the age of 67 years.

services were held Monday, June 16, 1997 at 2:00 p.m. at the Sharpsburg
Presbyterian Church with the
Rev.
Tim Mara officiating.
Music
was provided by Linda Spring, Beverly Bender and Rev. Tim Maxa.

Cox, Judy A Morris -
Judy
A. Cox was born January 7, 1941, in a farmhouse east of Bedford, the daughter
of Vilas and Ruth (Salen) Morris. She passed
away
on June 23, 1997, after a several year battle with cancer.
Judy
grew up on a farm near Athelston and attended the Blockton Community School through her junior year and
graduated from Bedford Community School in 1959.
Upon
graduation she briefly attended college in Cedar Falls before eloping with her
high school sweetheart, Don Cox.
Don
and Judy were married September 29, 1959, in Casper, Wyoming. To this union 3
sons were born, Donald, David and Douglas.
After
she and Don married, Judy devoted herself to being a wife and homemaker. She
was a member of the United Methodist
Church
in Bedford, a member of the Golden Rule Rebekah Lodge
No. 134, and Chairman of the Taylor County Unit for the American
Cancer
Society. In 1995 Judy initiated and founded Bedford's Self-Support Cancer
Group. She devoted time to the Bedford Booster Club during her sons' high
school years.
One
of Judy's passions was her antique collecting, a love she and Don shared for
over thirty years. Together they founded D & J Antiques where she served as
Vice-Presidcnt.
Judy
is survived by her husband Don; three sons, Donald and wife Cindy of
Emmetsburg, David and wife Joy and their children Carmen
and
Meghan of Clarinda, and Douglas and wife Peggy and their children Christian and
Dalton of Aberdeen, S.D.; two brothers, Jim Morris and with Cathy of Bedford,
and Vilas Morris Jr. and wife Elvira of Cedar Falls; two sisters, Joanne Scroggie and husband Gary of Bedford and Jillene Casey and husband Larry of Centerville and many
friends.
Judy
was preceded in death by her parents, Vilas and Ruth Morris, two brothers, John
who died at 2 years of age and Jack who died in a car accident in 1958.
Funeral
Services were conducted by Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford on Thursday June 26,
1997 at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Bedford, with Rev. Paul Evans
and Rev. Paul Hutchins officiating.
Providing
music were Mildred Stacy, Jodi Lawrence, Marvel Melvin and Mary Weaver.
Pallbearers

Floyd
attended country school north of Stringtown, Iowa. On
January 25, 1934 he was united in marriage with
Zelda Costin and she preceded him in death on March 27,
1976.
Floyd
"Dutch" lived a full and rewarding life with a steadfast belief in
the goodness of the earth and faith in those
who
tilled the soil.
Surviving
him to honor his memory are his nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Pauline Grimm the youngest daughter of Jeff and Anna Turner Hayes was born on
May 8, 1911 in Creston,
Iowa
and entered into rest at Mercy Hospital in Corning, Iowa on May 19, 1997 at the
age of 86 years and 11 days.
Gladys
received her education at the Bedford School. She was united in marriage with
Harlan Grimm of Sharpsburg, on February 23,
1932
in Rock Port, Missouri. This union was blessed on August 21, 1940 with the
birth of a son, Jack Louis Grimm.
Gladys
worked in restaurants for many years and at the Smart Shop for five years. She
loved playing bingo and assembling puzzles. She
was
a member of the Christian Church of Lenox.
Surviving
to honor her memory are; her son, Jack Grimm of Des Moines; two sister-in-laws, Maysel Boltinghouse of
Lenox and
Mildred
Donaldson of Sharpsburg, two brother-in-laws, Wyatt and his wife Arlene Grimm
of Lenox and Bobby and his wife Mary Ann
Grimm
of Scottsdale, Arizona and two nieces Garland Townsend and Thelma Potts of
Creston.
Preceding
her in death are her husband Harlan Grimm on September 14, 1981, her father in
1945 and mother in 1946, three brothers and three sisters.

Ives, Richard C -
Richard
C. Ives was born April 29, 1926 in Diagonal, Iowa, to O.R. (Pete) and Faye
(Brown) Ives and departed this
life
on May 5, 1997 at his home in Miami, Florida at the age of 71 years.
Dick
grew up in Diagonal attending the local school. He graduated with the class of
1943 where he was outstanding in
sports.
He continued his education at the University of Iowa where he earned
All-American Honors in basketball
in
the years 1944, 1945, and 1946. He led the Hawkeyes in scoring during these
three years. His best season was his
freshman
season when he averaged 18.2 points per game. Included in that season was a 43
point game against Chicago.
Dick's
freshman scoring average remains the best in Iowa history. He was inducted into
the Iowa High School
Basketball
Hall of Fame in 1979.
Upon
graduation from college he married Joan Newton and managed a hardware store in
Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Soon
after
the birth of his daughter, Susan, they moved to Miami where he went to work at
the Ready Potato Company. He
retired
and sold his portion of the business after 42 years of service. Even after his
retirement in February of this
year
he continued to assist in the operation of the company.
Dick
was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, O.R. (Pete) Jr. and Max.
Left to mourn his passing
are
his daughter, Susan and husband John Parilla;
granddaughters, Deanna and Emily Parilla; and
grandsons,
John
and Anthony Parilla, all of Coral Springs, Florida;
and his companion of 14 years, Paula Horton of Miami, Florida.

were held at the United Church of Diagonal on May 9, 1997.

Harold
Wayne Kerns was born July 8, 1902 at Gravity, Iowa to Joseph Spencer and Carrie
Ellen Barton Kerns and passed away on May 19, 1997 in Corning, Iowa at the age
of 94 years.
Harold
was united in marriage on September 15, 1926 to Maurine Cecile Nickle in Clearfield. To this union were born two children:
Donald
and Norma Lee.
In
the early years, he lived in Colorado and worked at a floral shop there. The
family moved back to Clearfield in 1949 and
remained
there until 1976 when Harold and Maurine retired to Lenox. While living in
Clearfield, Harold farmed and did carpentry work, as well as work at the Clearfield
Hardware Store and help the Varners at the funeral
home for 18 years. Harold became a resident of the Clearview Home in Clearfield in 1996.
He
was a member of the Christian Churches of Clearfield and Lenox.
Harold
was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Maurine on May 28, 1993, a
great-grandson Timmv Richey, a grandson, Dennis
Kerns, five brothers: Ray, Walter, Guy, Fred and Harry and five sisters: Amy
King, Helen O'Neal, Nellie Huber, Nora Grace and Ruby Atkin.
Left
to mourn his passing are his son, Donald and his wife, Vivian Kerns of Grimes,
Iowa and his daughter, Norma Lee Black of Lenox, Iowa; his grandchildren: Steve

Lela
Esther (Million) Kitterman was born June 17, 1946 to
Barbara Ellen (Padget) and Clifford Allen Million in
Sharpsburg,
Iowa and passed away on June 11, 1997 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.
Lela
attended Sharpsburg Grade School and graduated from Lenox Community High School
in 1964. She then
attended
and graduated from the American Beauty School in Des Moines, becoming a
licensed beautician.
In
1965 Lela was united in marriage to John Kitterman and to this union two sons were born, Kenneth and Keith.
Lela
and her family lived in Des Moines and later moved to the community of Norwalk,
She became a medication aid
at
the Regency Care Center in Norwalk.
Lela
is survived by her husband John of Norwalk; Kenneth and wife Ann of Des Moines;
Keith of Phoenix,
Arizona;
Sister Lillie and husband Howard (Mick) Blake of Lenox, Iowa; as well as other
family members and
other
dear friends,
Lela
worked with within the Al-Anon support group touched the lives of many people
through the various
offices
she held and she most recently served as the director of the Spiritual Retreat.
Lela
was a member of the Methodist Church and Veritas.

for Lela Esther Kitterman were held Saturday, June
14, 1997 at 10 a.m. at the South Town Funeral Home
Chapel
in Des Moines, with the Rev. Al Rusk of the Sharpsburg United Methodist Church
officiating.
A
graveside service was held at 3 p.m. with burial in the Lexington Cemetery
north of the Lake of Three Fires

for Ruby Ellen Parker were held May 22, 1997 at the United Church of Diagonal

Ruby
Ellen Parker was born one of 12 children to Willis and Elizabeth (Tillison) Frazier on July 16, 1910 in Salisbury, Missouri.
And on
May
19, 1997 at the Lenox Care Center, Ruby left this life as we know it.
On March
16, 1932, Ruby was united in marriage to Archibald McCulley Parker. To this union came the blessing of five children. Ruby lived most of
her life northwest of Diagonal with the exception of her time in Danville,
Indiana.
Ruby
worked as a homemaker, and she was a very active farm wife-partner with her
husband, Archie. Ruby enjoyed working outdoors with the good earth. And she was
very good at it.
Ruby
also enjoyed cooking and music.
Ruby
is preceded in death by her husband, Archie in 1964, eldest daughter, Nadine in
1994 and her youngest son, Alvin in 1995.
Surviving
Ruby in death are two sons; Kenneth (Sharon) Parker of Humboldt, Iowa; and
Calvin (Tena) Parker of Coon Rapids, Iowa.
One
daughter, Marcia Lett of Lamoni,
Iowa. Sixteen grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, and one great great grandson.
She
was laid to rest at the Rising Sun Cemetery at Diagonal, Iowa.

Spring, Joey Evelyn Duey -
Joey
Evelyn Duey Spring, daughter of Stephen and Scharlotte Finkbiner Duey was born June 19, 1914 near Graham, Missouri and
entered into rest at the Lutheran Home in Omaha, Nebraska on April 18, 1997
after a short illness at the age of 82 years.
She
moved to Iowa from Missouri in 1923 to the Lenox community and attended grade
school at Mercer Center. She moved
to
Clearfield in 1928 and graduated from Clearfield High School in 1932.
She
taught grade school in rural Iowa, Bellevue, Nebraska and at the Lewis Central
Schools in Council Bluffs. She was united in
marriage
to Harry Spring May 15, 1938 at her parent's home east of Clearfield, Iowa.
To
this union were born four children, Arlene, Colleen, Karen and Ronald.
Preceding
her in death were her husband in 1985, daughter Arlene in infancy, son Ronald
and son-in-law Raymond Hering, brother
L.J. Duey, two sisters Ethel McIntire and Rosetta Corliss,
grandson Tim Coldwell and granddaughter Marcia Hering.
Surviving
her are daughters, Mrs. Everett (Colleen) Gochenour and Karen Hering; daughter-in-law, Rosalie Spring;
grandchildren, Ann
Edenburn,
Kelly Coldwell, Cody Spring, Merilee Lank, Melinda Hemphill, Michelle Hering, Tom, Tim, Chris and Cindy Valeicka and great
grandchildren;
twin brother, John Duey; sister, Molly Johnston; many
nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Gerald Orville -
Services
for Orville Williams were held May 12, 1997 at the United Presbyterian Church
with Rev. Tim Maxa officiating.
Music
was provided by Bonnie Tyler, pianist.
Casket
Bearers were Todd Poppa, James Brown, Rick Paulson, Marlin Paulson, Richard
Paulson and LaRell Wilkinson.
Gerald
Orville Williams was born September 29, 1917 in Maple Hill, Iowa to Lewis and
Martha Wetterhus Williams and
entered
into rest at the Greater Community Hospital on May 9, 1997 at the age of 79
years, 8 months and 10 days.
He
was married to Doris Butler on February 20, 1954. This marriage was blessed
with the birth of a son, Jerry.
Orville
had many occupations in his lifetime including carpentry, painter, cement
finisher, police officer and night
watchman.
He was a concerned citizen and served one term as mayor of Lenox.
Orville
was a familiar figure around Lenox and enjoyed visiting with people at his
favorite stops.
Orville
took care of Doris during the illness that lead to her death in 1977. He
visited daily with his son, Jerry.
Orville
especially looked forward to visits from his grandson, Jayme.
Surviving
to honor his memory are; his son, Jerry and wife Lori Williams of Lenox, and
Orville's treasured
grandson,
Jayme Williams of Kansas City, Missouri. Also remembering Orville are his
nieces, nephews and many
good
friends.
Memorials
have been established to the United Presbyterian Church and the Lenox Ambulance
Service.
