Abel, Gladys Olevia Wellington -
Gladys Olevia Abel was born Sept. 23, 1901 in Kingsville,
Mo., the only daughter in a family of seven children. Her father was John
Wellington Worden and her mother was Hattie Bertha (Boston) Wellington. At age
13, her family moved to Olathe, Kansas, and later to Squires, Missouri.
On
June 20, 1920, she married Abner Earl Abel. Eight
children were born to this union. They moved to Silver City in 1920 where they farmed.
They moved several times in Iowa, First in 1928 to Oakland, and then in 1931 to
Walnut. In 1945, they moved to a farm one mile north and 1/2 cast of Cromwell.
In 1960, they moved to Creston.
Gladys
was a homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a special
friend.
She
was a member of the Cromwell Congregational United Church of Christ, the
Cromwell women's Fellowship, the S.S.S. Club of Creston and a volunteer at
Greater Community Hospital in Creston.
Gladys
died Feb. 4, 1998, at Greater Community Hospital in Creston at the age of 96
years, 4 months, 11 days.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Earl, daughters: Evelyn Abel
and Beverly Mohr, six brothers George, Guy,
Russell, Raymond, Richard and Carl; a grandson Michael Abel and a son-in-law
Gaylord Doonan.
Those
who are left to cherish her memory are her children: Kenneth Abel and wife
Darlene of Creston; Chester Abel and wife Betty of Creston,
Loretta Doonan and friend Arnold Petersen of Harlan,
Mary Anne Bryant and husband Bud of Lenox, Bertha Purdum and husband Dale of Lenox, Carol Anderson and husband Jack of Manhattan Beach,
Calif., a son-in-law Bill Mohr of Creston; four sisters-in-
law;
23 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and 8 great great grandchildren; as well as numerous other relatives and friends.
Funeral
services were held Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Cromwell Congregational United
Church of Christ with Rev. Lucretia Parks
officiating.
Burial
was in the Maple Hill Cemetery at Cromwell.
Dorothy
McIntire as organist and Mary Lou Judd as vocalist provided the music.
Pallbearers
were Jamie Doonan, Dennis Abel, Craig Bryant, Mark Purdum, Rodney Abel, Rick Anderson and Brian Mohr.

Bryant,
Willard Eugene (Bud) -
Willard
Eugene Bryant was born January 23, 1928, in Creston, Iowa, one of seven children
of Noah Willard and Margaret (Kay) Bryant. Bud as he was affectionately known,
graduated from Orient High School in the class of 1945. Following his
education, he farmed in the Cromwell area.
He
was married on October 2, 1949, at the Cromwell Congregational Church to Mary
Anne Abel. To their union was born two sons: Craig and Scott.
In
1952, Bud enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during the Korean Conflict.
Following his time spent in the Army, they moved to the Kansas City area where
he worked as an appliance salesman. In 1974, the family moved to Lenox. They
operated the hardware and
furniture
store until 1986. Bud then became a fiber optic installer while a member of the
Iowa Union Operators Engineers
Local
234 in Des Moines.
He
was a member of the Christian Church, first in Kansas City, then in Lenox, the
Parkinson Post #250 of the American Legion in Lenox, a former member of the
Lenox Chamber of Commerce.
Outside
of work, his interests revolved around working in his shop where he was an
accomplished woodworker.
Bud
died March 13, 1998, at this home in Lenox at the age of 70 years, 1 month and
20 days.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Mildred Bryant and a nephew
Larry Riley.
Bud will
be forever remembered by his wife Mary Anne Bryant of Lenox, Sons: Craig Bryant
of Lenox and Scott Bryant and wife Jackie of Kansas City, MO; six
grandchildren: Brandy Sue, Christopher Craig and Travis James Bryant, all of
Lenox, and Kaylie Marie, Derek
Scott
and Nikole Lea Bryant all of Kansas City, MO;
brothers: Paul Bryant of Lenox, and Robert Bryant and wife Katie of Utah;
Sisters: Lottie Riley and husband Leroy of Afton, IA, Alberta Mellow and
husband Norman of Merced, CA, and Lucille Dillenburg and husband
Junior
of Creston, special friend Jan Beach of Lenox, as well as other relatives and
many friends.
Funeral
services were held Monday, March 16 at 11 a.m. at the Lenox Christian Church
with Rev. Dena Woldruff officiating.
Burial
was in the North Fairview Cemetery. Visitation was held Sunday at Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Lenox.
Active
pallbearers were Lonny Riley, Denny Abel, James Doonan,
Rodney Abel, Brady Abel, Mark Purdum and Steve Purdum. Honorary pallbearers were Dale Collins, Fred
Haynes, James Hewitt, Fred Helm, Reed Helm, Wayne Christensen, Marvin Reed and
Dan
Carruthers.

Bryant sang, "Amazing Grace," and "And My Heart Will Go
On." Jan Beach as organist provided accompaniment as Tim Kinkade
sang,
''Wind Beneath My Wings" and "Because he Lives, I Can Face
Tomorrow".

Frahm, Linda -
A
man suspected of murdering his wife near Prescott was found dead on Saturday
with apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds.
Henry
C. Frahm, 52, was wanted for questioning in
connection with the shooting death of his wife, Linda Frahm,
47.
Henry Frahm was found dead in a vacant farm house near Burchard, Neb. That community is located in Pawnee County,
southeastern Nebraska.
The
home was reportedly the former residence of Henry Frahm's late mother.
Law
enforcement officers had been searching for Henry Frahm since Thursday when Linda Frahm was found dead in the
Williamson farm house. Williamson is located northeast of Prescott.
The
discovery of Mrs. Frahm's body came when the Prescott
Fire Department responded to a fire at the farm house late Thursday morning.
Mrs. Frahm's body was found after the fire was
extinguished, and it was later determined that she had been shot.

Beatrice Denhart -
Beatrice
Hewitt, 90, of Taylor Ridge Estates, Lenox, passed away Wednesday, February 4,
1998, at Greater Community Hospital.
She
was born August 8, 1907, near Diagonal, the daughter of George W. and Lura (Spencer) Denhart. She
attended rural schools through the eighth grade. On November 24, 1926, she
married Ray C. Hewitt at the Methodist parsonage in Creston.
She
farmed with her husband for more than 69 years on a farm northeast of Lenox
before moving to Taylor Ridge Estates in 1995, was a member of Grant Center
Church until her marriage, Prairie Star Church until it closed in 1947 and
United Methodist Church in Lenox for more than 50 years. She was also a member
of the Methodist Ladies Quilting Club, Prairie Star Ladies Aid, and various
neighborhood card clubs.
Mrs.
Hewitt is survived by her husband, Ray C. of Lenox; two daughters, Virginia
(husband Keith) Davis of Huntsville, Ala., and Phyllis
(husband
Dale) Ferguson of Atlantic; one son James (wife Lois) Hewitt of Lenox; ten
grandchildren; 20 greatgrandchildren;
and
a brother-in-law, Duane Knittle of Shenandoah.
She
was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Lloyd and twins in infancy; and
sisters, Georgia Denhart, Lorene Nielsen and Dori
Knittle.
Funeral
services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 7 at the United Methodist

Bayfield, Colo., passed away in her hometown on Feb. 4, 1998.
She
is a former Lenox resident and a 1939 graduate of Lenox High School. Her father
was Harry Teatsworth,
who
was employed at the Ford Garage in Lenox.

Services
for Leland E. Maharry were held March 18 at the Lenox
United Presbyterian Church with Rev. Tim Maxa officiating.
Leland
was born April 6, 1923 at Clearfield, Iowa the son of Cecil and Mary Pearle
(Hewitt) Maharry.
After
graduating from Clearfield High School he attended Iowa State University in
Ames.
He
served in the United States Navy until June of 1946.
On
February 22, 1948 he was united in marriage to Lucille Gripp in Murray, Iowa. To this union was born two sons and one daughter.
He
farmed in the Kent area for a while after marriage and then moved to
southeastern United States where he worked as a
custodian
for many years. He returned to Lenox in February of 1998.
Survivors
include his wife of Creston; sons, William Maharry of
Lenox and Frederick Craig and wife Robin Maharry of
Maquoketa,
Iowa;
and daughter Sandra Harris of Creston; two brothers, Gerald and wife Hazel of
Lenox, and Dr. James and wife Rita of Whittier,
California,
and six grandchildren.
Preceding
him in death are his parents and a son-in-law, Dr. Dan Harris.
Interment
was in the Fairview Cemetery in Lenox.
Military
rites were by the Theodore J. Martens Post #1797 of the VFW, of Creston.

Manroe, Benjamin Clark -
Benjamin
Clark Manroe, former Lenox resident, passed away
December 31, 1997, at Mercy Hospital in San Diego, CA, at the age of 79 years,
9 months, and 29 days.
Clark
was born March 2, 1918, in Lenox, IA the son of Fred and Elfleda (Drake) Manroe. He graduated from Lenox High School
in 1935.
Clark
and Donna Luella Hetz, daughter of Christian and
Nellie Lorena (Beach) Hetz, were united in marriage
March 10, 1939. To this union their son, Donald Clark, was born.
In
1941 they moved to San Diego, CA. Clark joined the Navy in 1944 and served in
the Philippines at Samar, aboard an LST.
Upon
returning home, Clark opened his plumbing business, continuing to operate it
until his retirement in October 1982, at which time
he
and Donna started traveling in their motor home and enjoying relaxing weekends,
fishing on their boat.
Clark
and Donna Lou enjoyed 21 years of square dancing with Clark serving as
President of the Swinging Eagles Square Dance Club.
On
March 10, 1998 Clark and Donna Lou would have celebrated their 59th wedding
anniversary.
Clark
is survived by his loving wife Donna Lou, their devoted son Donald Clark and
wife Kay, grandson Ronald Clark Manroe, wife
Kimberly, grandson Robert Clark Manroe, wife Dawn,
and two great granddaughters, Elizabeth Frances Manroe and Katharine
Ann Manroe daughters of Ronald and Kimberly.
Also
mourning his passing are: brother and sister-in-law Phillip Lee and Allene Manroe of Potrero, CA; brother William (Bill) Frederick
Manroe of La Mesa, CA; sister-in-law Vivienne Beach Boyles and her husband Floyd
Boyles; brothers-in-law Norman Beach Hetz, and
Clifford George Hetz and his wife Wanda Hetz, all of San Diego; and many nephews, nieces, and
friends.
He
was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Bonnie Belle Manroe and Rose Emma (Manroe)
Moore.

Don
served his country in the U.S. during WWII.
He
died Feb. 4, 1998, at his home in Orient at the age of 70 years, 6 months, 15
days.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Wilbur Marxen,
a brother-in-law Bill Butcher, and a grandson Donald Driver.
Don
is survived by his wife Norma Marxen of Orient,

E. Miller was born on April 14, 1911 near Lenox, Iowa, the son of Frank and

January 26, 1998 at the age of 86 years, 9 months, 12 days.
Frank
grew to maturity in the Lenox area, where he attended rural schools. In 1933 he
was united in marriage to Inez Bush in Omaha,
Nebraska,
the this union a daughter, Shirley was born.
Frank
moved to Shenandoah where he worked for the Highway Commission. In 1943 he
moved to Clinton, Iowa going to work for the
Alcoa
Aluminum Company as a Maintenance Unit Supervisor in 1947. His wife Inez died
in 1967, and in 1968 he married Catherine Cox in Bettendorf, Iowa. Frank worked for Alcoa for over
22 years retiring in 1971, at which time he and Catherine moved to Fairfield
Bay, Arkansas where Frank worked as a building inspector for 25 years. Catherine
died in 1993 and in 1994 he moved to Lenox, where he resided at the time of his
death.
Survivors
include his daughter, Shirley and husband Bill Ellsworth of Durant, Iowa; a
step-son Jerry Cox of Baudette, MN; a step-daughter Judy and husband Bud Moorehead of Baudette, MN; four sisters, Hazel Stoaks, Lela and husband Bud Spoonemore,
Wilma and husband Dick Gray and Alberta and husband James Calvin all of Lenox;
sister-in-law Pauline Miller of Lenox; several grandchildren
and
great grandchildren.
Frank
was preceded in death by his parents; his wives Inez and Catherine; six

Creston. He was preceded in death

Riley, Richard Edwin -
Richard
Edwin Riley, was the son of Raymond Martin and Elsie Madden Riley and was born
April 2, 1934 in Adams County, Mercer
Township,
Iowa. Richard died January 21, 1998 of cancer at his home in rural Corning,
Iowa.
Richard
attended country schools in Mercer and Grant Townships and was a 1952 graduate
of Lenox High School. In 1953 he enlisted in
the
U.S. Air Force and served four years. Two and one-half years of his enlistment
were spent at Eleison Air Force Base near Fairbanks,
Alaska.
On
January 9, 1955 he was united in marriage to Shirley Fulk in the Christian Church in Lenox, Iowa. Shirley then joined him Alaska. To
this
loving union two sons were born, Russell and Keith. Following his release from
the Air Force in February 1957, the couple returned to the farm, living 2 1/4
miles east of Mercer Center. This farm had once belonged to his grandfather,
W.H. Riley. In the
1980's
he and his older son, Russell, formed a trucking company and he spent many
hours on the road.
He
was a member of the Salem Church of the Brethren and American Legion Post #250
in Lenox. He was a devoted husband and father
who
encouraged and supported his sons in their endeavors. They were the light of
his life.
His
grandchildren were a great joy and each one held a special place in his heart.
He loved to rough house with them when they were small tots.
Survivors
are his loving wife Shirley of Corning; two sons, Russell and his children,
Deena, Ryan and Karlee of Corning and Keith and wife
Vicki
and their children Megan and Kevin of Le Claire, Iowa; one brother-in-law,
Ronald and wife Susan Fulk of Lenox; a nephew, Dallas Fulk of St. Paul, Minnesota and several cousins.
Richard
is preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Elsie and his father and
mother-in-law, Ralph and LaNeta Fulk.

for Edna I. Shelman was held January 28, 1998 at the
Christian Church in Sheridan, Missouri with Rev. Jason Hawk officiating.
Edna
Iona Shelman was born November 3, 1910 in Clarinda, Iowa to Lee Ander and Anna Marie
(Rains) Ellison. During her adolescent
years,
she lived around Clarinda and Burlington Junction.
On
March 21, 1931 she was married to Clyde Nesbitt Shelman.
In this union they were blessed with two sons, Harlan and Leroy.
Edna
worked beside her husband while farming in Missouri and Iowa. In 1966 Edna and
Clyde relocated in Colorado where they were
employed
at Colorado Boys Ranch as collage parents. After eighteen years of dedication they retired.
She
belonged to the Rebecca Lodge and was a devoted member in the Christian Church,
where she spent time quilting and giving
a
helping hand to others. In 1992 they retired to Lenox. She continued her loving
care to Clyde when they relocated to the Clearview
Nursing
Home in Mt. Ayr, Iowa.
Edna
was preceded in death by her husband Clyde, parents Lee Ander and Anna Marie
Ellison; son Harlan; three sisters Clara Bennett,
Edith
Kelley, and Ruth Long; two brothers Ray Ellison and Henry Ellison.
Left
to cherish her memory is her son Leroy of Independence, Missouri; grandchildren
Vickie Nickens, Linda Poage,
Joe and Jim
Shelman and Trudi Goddard all of Portland, Oregon; Kevin Shelman of Mount Ayr, Iowa and
Diane Stephens of Sheridan, Missouri; twelve great-grandchildren and one
great-great grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and
friends.

was in the Isadora Cemetery at Grant City, Missouri.

Jean
Stone daughter of William E. Campbell, Sr. and Anna Campbell was born at
Marengo, Iowa, September 16, 1911 and departed this life February 21, 1998 at
Lenox, Iowa at the age of 86.
She
lived in Lenox and grew to maturity in Bedford where she attended the public
school and Presbyterian church.
On
April 18, 1936 she was united in marriage to Robert F. Stone at Maryville,
Missouri and they lived various places in Iowa and in Arizona. She was employed
as a housewife.
She
was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, 2 brothers and two sisters.
Left
to cherish her memory are her brother William E. Campbell and wife Helen; a
niece, Susan Fuhrmeister; nephew, Bill
Campbell;
nephew, Bo Lower and family and great niece, Erin Campbell.
She
loved animals and enjoyed feeding stray cats and birds. She will be missed by
her friends at Sunrise apartments and by her family.

family interment was held at the Mausoleum, Fairview Cemetery in Bedford with

Edith
Marie Spargur Wasson was born June 12, 1908, in
Hepburn, Iowa. She is the daughter of Charles and Rachel Overman Spargur.
Edith
was the ninth child out of eleven children born to Charles and Rachel.
When
Edith was only one year of age the family moved to Shenandoah where she grew up
and attended the Shenandoah
Community
School through the eighth grade.
She
worked for the Hotel Victoria and the Mount Arbor Nursery prior to her
marriage.
Edith
was united in marriage to Henry Wasson on Feb. 15, 1930, in Clarinda. To this
union seven children were born Robert, Kenneth, Phyllis, Delbert, James, Kathy
and Shirley.
Edith
and Henry lived in Lincoln. Neb., Red Oak, Clarinda, Blanchard and Coin prior
to making their home in Conway on March 1, 1945.
The
couple farmed and Edith was known as a true "homemaker".
She
was a member of the Shenandoah Methodist Church and Ladies Auxiliary of Conway.
In her later years, Edith worked at the Midway Cafe south of Shenandoah for her
friend, Wilma Reed.
Upon
Henry's death, Edith moved to Lenox where she made her home at the Sunrise
Apartments until 1993 when she moved to the Taylor Ridge Estates where she
resided until her death.
Edith
is survived by four sons, Robert and wife JoAnn Wasson of Panora; Kenneth Lee and wife Jeanne Wasson
of Kalama, Wash.; Delbert Eugene and wife Pat Wasson of Kelso, Wash.; and James
D. and wife Alice Wasson of Lenox; three daughters, Phyllis
J.
and husband Bud Jamison of Omaha, Neb.; Kathy Supinger and special friend Larry Garner of Bedford; and Shirley M. and Robert Spencer
of Stanton; two sisters-in-law, Ione Spargur of
Shenandoah and Alma Spargur of Falls City, Neb.; 30
grandchildren
and
60 great grandchildren, along with many other relatives and friends.
She
is preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Rachel Spargur;
her husband Henry in April of 1988; six brothers Clarence, Clyde,
Raymond,
Harry, Harold and Robert; and four sisters, Mattie, Grace, Edna and Ruby; four
grandchildren, Bonnie, Doug, Debbie and
Jeff;
and two son-in-laws, Marvin McMillin and Jim Supinger.
Burial
was in the Conway Cemetery at Conway, Iowa.
Services
were conducted by Ritchie Funeral Home of Bedford, Iowa.

Nellie
Alice Whitmore, the fifth child of Daniel and Mary Blanche Knox Bruner was born
September 11, 1910 on the family farm in Taylor County, Iowa. She joined our
Lord and her husband, Lester on February 27, 1998 at the Ringgold County
Hospital in Mt. Ayr, Iowa at the age of 87 years, 5 months and 17 days.
She
was raised on the family farm in Taylor County and attended Cornbread College
and later Clearfield Public Schools.
At
an early age she became a member of Greenwood Church, later joining Clearfield
United Methodist Church where she served as superintendent of Sunday School for
many years.
Alice
pursued and received her teaching certificate in Bedford and started teaching
November 11, 1927, two months after turning seventeen. She taught K-8 at Grant
Center School located one and one-half miles from her home. She often made her
trips to and from
school
on horseback.
On
May 27, 1933 Alice and Lester Whitmore were united in marriage at the Bruner
farm. They were blessed with four children: Max Eugene, Donald Bailey, Gary Lee
and Vicki Sue.
Alice
spent the next 25 years devoting her time to the care of her family.
She
hung wallpaper for 25 cents per roll, and later worked at the Variety Store,
later called the A to Z before starting as a
nurse's
aide at the Clearview Home. Alice retired after 20
years, serving as a nurse's aide and later Activities Director to care for
Lester who was in failing health.
After
Lester passed away in 1981, Alice devoted her retirement years to sewing
flannel shirts, knitting hundreds of sweaters, piecing beautiful quilts for her
children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lester, one grandson Lucas Paul,
one brother Roland and one sister, Marietta Abarr.
She
is survived by three sons, Max and wife Kathy of Donna, TX; Don and wife, Sandy
of Conroe, TX and Gary and wife, Peg of Entiat, WA;
one daughter, Vicki and husband, Ken Yoder of Iowa City, IA; one brother, Fred
of Clearfield; four sisters, Bernice Wiley of Clearfield; Ruth Sundell of Lenox; Mildred Matthews and Helen Lyddon of Clearfield, as well as 18 grandchildren and 25
great
grandchildren.
A person's wealth can be measured by the love of their children.
Funeral
services were held on Monday, March 2, 1998 with the Rev. Alan Rusk
officiating.
Music
was provided by Patty Parrish, organist for the congregation and Julie Scott,
great niece, accompanied by Barb Scott, niece.
Casketbearers were Brent Whitmore, Dan Whitmore, Paul Whitmore, Jeff Whitmore, Marty
Whitmore, Jon Whitmore, Lance
Bolton,
Greg Whitmore, and Mike Whitmore.
Interment
was in the Clearfield Cemetery at Clearfield, Iowa.
Wilson-Watson
and Armstrong Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
