Grey, Zella Bowdre -

Zella Grey, 80, a long-time Taylor County resident, died August 3th, 1975 at the Rosary hospital in Corning.

She was born February 1st, 1895 at Selma, Iowa, to Frank and Lydia Bowdre. She was baptised in the Christian Church at Lenox, Iowa in 1915 by Rev. McCallen.

Mrs. Grey lived her early childhood in eastern Iowa, later moving to southwest Iowa.

She was married to Harry Grey January 26, 1912, and to this union was born a son, George Grey, with whom she made her home the last several years.

Survivors include a son, George Grey, daughter-in-law Edna Grey of Lenox, a sister, Eva Swisher of Kansas City, Kansas, granddaughter Georgia and husband Ed Morey,

two great grandchildren Lisa and Mike of Clarinda, Iowa, a number of nieces, nephews, two sisters-in-law and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and one sister.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, August 5th at 2:00 p.m. from the Larkin-Bender Funeral Home in Lenox with Pastor Don Jensen officiating.

Music was furnished by Ruth Boltinghouse, organist.

Bearers were Herman Haering, Barney Miller, George Reynolds, Loren Hinshaw, Ted Bruington and Orvin Bush.

Interment was in West Fairview cemetery.

Hayes, Carrie -

Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at 1:30 for Carrie Hayes, 87 who had been a resident of the Lenox Care Center the past two and one-half years.

Mrs. Hayes died July 17th at St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska.

Carrie Hayes, daughter of Charles E. Hayes and Mary Catherine Fender, was born January 19, 1888 on a farm near Imogene, Iowa. The early part of her life was spent on

different farms in Fremont and Page counties,

In her early adult life she had a millinery store in Essex, Iowa. Most of her adult years were spent in Kansas City, Missouri where she was employed in homes as domestic help.

After her health failed she was moved to the Lenox Care Center in February, 1973.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters.

Remaining to mourn her passing is one nephew, Gerald Boydston and one cousin, Mabel Grimm of Sharpsburg. 

Rev. Floyd Newbrough, pastor of the United Methodist Church officiated at the services, held at the Larkin-Bender Funeral Home.

Music was furnished by Norma Paymal, organist.

Bearers were Bob Donaldson,  Karl Sundell, Bing Miller, Alvin Leaver, Thurman Curphy and Paul Chitty.

Interment was in Washington cemetery at Gravity, Ia,

Henderson, Cora -

Cora Henderson, formerly of Clearfield and Villisca, died Thursday at Midway City, California. Miss Henderson had graduated from the Clearfield high school and Tarkio

college, and taught in Clearfield until 1926. She later instructed students in English at Huntington Beach, California until retirement. She also helped support the Clearfield

United Presbyterian Church until 1940 and later taught Sunday School in her church in Midway City, California and worked at keeping the church going financially and membership-wise.

She never married but helped her nieces and nephews financially and with advice relative to their education. Cora showed a lot of interest in all of her nieces and nephews and

took them to proper activities and tried to show them good times.

Graveside services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the East Fairview cemetery in Lenox with Rev. Wallace Nelson, pastor of the United Presbyterian Church of Lenox

officiating.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews in the Lenox area.

Leach, Glenn Freeman -

Glenn Freeman Leach, a brother of Mrs. Lloyd Chandler and Mrs. Ruby Shawler of Lenox, died at the Greater Community Hospital in Creston July 17th at the age of

68 years, 6 months and 13 days.

He was born near Eldorado Springs, Mo., Jan. 4, 1907, the son of Wesley H. and Nellie Florence Fitzgerald Leach.

When a very small boy, his family moved to Iowa in a covered wagon and settled near Lenox where he spent his youth. He attended and became a member of the Lenox Christian Church, later transferring to the First Methodist Church in Creston where he attended faithfully until his health failed.

He was married to Opal Howie on November 14, 1954.

He is survived by his widow, a daughter, Joan Holdren, son-in-law, Hilton Holdren; 2 grandsons, 2 great grandchildren, two brothers and sisters-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin

Leach, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Leach all of Creston, 2 sisters and brothers-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd (Thelma) Chandler and Mr. and Mrs. Bert (Ruby) Shawler all of Lenox.

His parents and one brother, Harold, preceded him in death.

Glenn operated the Gamble Store in Corning from 1941 until 1951. Later he operated a restaurant in Coming until 1958. He and his wife, Opal started operating the East

End Grocery store on East Howard Street in Creston in 1958. During the 11 years until 1969 when the store was closed he was a friend to everyone in the neighborhood,

and to those coming into the store. His past time was drawing pictures of the children, happenings and other items of interest around the store. He held membership in the

Elks lodge and the Eagles lodge. He was presently treasurer of the Eagles lodge.

He always had a smile and hello for everyone. He will be missed by a host of friends and relatives, both young and old.

His spiritual faith, joy in living and cheerfulness were an inspiration to all who knew him.

Services were held Sunday, July 20th at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church. Rev. James W. Morris officiated.

Burial was in Graceland cemetery at Creston.

McClaren, Eleanor -

Mrs. Eleanor McClaren, 63, of Colfax. sister of Jack Williams of this city, died of a sudden heart attack Saturday afternoon at her home.

Mr. and Mrs Williams had gone to Colfax for the week end to visit his three sisters all of whom reside there.

Other survivors besides her brother include a daughter and her husband, Mr. and Mrs Nick Nikolish, two sisters, Mrs. Clyde Johnson and Mrs. J. D. Chambers, a grandson,

Kevin Nikolish all of Colfax, and several nieces and nephews.

The Jack Williams, her niece and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Gary Hartford and nephew, Kelly Williams were in Colfax Tuesday where they attended the funeral services.

Ranck, Edna Heaton -

Edna Ranck, 82, died Tuesday, July 23rd at the Colonial Manor in Corning, Iowa.

She was born June 22, 1893 close to Sharpsburg in Taylor County, Iowa, the daughter of James and Minnie Heaton. She was 82.years and 1 month of age at the time of her passing.

Mrs. Ranck lived in Taylor and Ringgold counties all of her life. In December of 1968 she moved from her home in Lenox to the Northgate Colonial Manor in Corning. She

resided there until her death.

She was married to Dorris P. Ranck on December 15th, 1920 at Sharpsburg, Iowa. To this marriage were born two sons and two daughters. Dorris and Edna farmed in Ringgold

and Taylor counties prior to moving to Lenox in 1945.

Survivors include a daughter, Audrey Fisher of Sioux City; two sons, Stanley and James of Corning; four grandsons, Lowell Ranck, Randy Ranck, Stanley Fisher and Roger Fisher; one great grandson, Chad Ranck and nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dorris, who passed away December 23, 1955; a daughter Helen Louise who died in infancy in 1939; her parents James and Minnie

Heaton; a brother, Glenn and two grandsons, Marvin Lee Drorbaugh and Bobby James Drorbaugh.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, July 26th at 1:30 p.m. from the United Methodist Church with Rev. Floyd Newbrough officiating.

Music was furnished by Lori Evans, organist and Mildred Walter, vocalist.

Bearers were Dale Lewallan, Dean Weller, Gerald Zollers, George Reynolds, Robert Reynolds and Leonard Knott.

Burial was in Washington cemetery at Gravity, Iowa.

Rankin, Charles Lyle -

Funeral services were conducted Monday for Charles Rankin, 48, who died Saturday at the Rosary Hospital.

Charles Lyle Rankin, son of Charles Lyle and Emma L. Baker Rankin, was born at Council Bluffs, Iowa on Nov. 19, 1926, and passed away at the Rosary Hospital in Corning,

Iowa on August 9, 1975 at the age of 48 years, 8 months and 20 days.

"Bud", as he was known by his family and friends, was baptized into the Presbyterian Church in Council Bluffs, Ia., at an early age. He was a veteran of the United States

Navy having served in World War II; Bud had joined immediately after his graduation from school, feeling a deep sense of commitment to his country.

He had worked in the "Music Shop" in Council Bluffs for the last 20 years. In 1970, he moved to Lenox where he had made his home. He had worked and helped farm while

living here.

He is survived by a son, Brad Rankin and his wife Noreen of Council Bluffs; his mother, Mrs. Emma L. Rankin of Lenox; and a sister and brother-in-law, Lester and Kitty

Day also of Lenox; other relatives and friends, all of whom will mourn his passing.

The 1:30 p.m. services were held at the Larkin-Bender Funeral Home in Lenox, with Rev. Floyd Newbrough, pastor of the United Methodist Church officiating.

Music was furnished by Norma Paymal.

Burial was in the Cedar Lawn cemetery at Council Bluffs.

Sawyer, Maurees Kenyon (M K) -

Maurees Kenyon Sawyer, son of John G. and Maude Whittington Sawyer, was born in Bedford, Iowa, March 19th, 1905 and died at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital on June

7, 1975.

He spent his boyhood in Oxford, Nebraska, returning to Bedford, Iowa. in 1920, where he was graduated from the Bedford high school in 1921.

Mr. Sawyer attended Iowa State University where he was graduated in 1925 with a degree in Industrial Engineering.

An accomplished trombonist he played first trombone in the Iowa State marching band, concert band and symphony orchestra. He later pursued this interest by conducting

the Municipal band at Boone, Iowa, and organized a Baptist Church orchestra there, which he also conducted. He continued to use this talent and organized and conducted

a Baptist Church orchestra in Bedford.

On July 21, 1925, he was united in marriage to Vivian Scott at Des Moines, Iowa. They are the parents of eight children—Elise (Mrs. James) Tranbarger of Sumner, Iowa;

John G. Sawyer of Middlesbrough, England; William E. Sawyer of Lenox, Iowa; Kay (Mrs. James) Dinsmoor of Bloomington, Indiana; Charles H. Sawyer of Onawa, Iowa;

Sondra (Mrs. Lowell) Parman of Marion, Iowa; Robert N. Sawyer of Rolla, Missouri, and Tom W. Sawyer of Littlefield, Texas.

After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Sawyer resided in Boone, Iowa, and Ames, Iowa where M. K. was employed by daily newspapers. In 1932 they moved to a farm near

Bedford where they have continued to live.

Maurees joined the Baptist Church in Oxford, Nebraska as a small boy, later transferring his membership to the Bedford Baptist Church. He was a member of Taylor Lodge

No. 156, A.F. & A.M. Well known throughout the area Mr. Sawyer was active in newspaper work from 1934 until his death—from 1934 to 1939 with the Taylor County Herald, from 1939 to 1943 as editor and publisher of The Lenox Time Table and as local correspondent for surrounding city daily papers.

He served as Taylor County Assessor from 1955 to 1971 when he retired.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother, Halbert.

He is survived y his widow, Vivian, his eight children their spouses and 18 grandchildren.

His determination to overcome a serious physical handicap and continue to be a good and useful citizen has been an inspiration to his family and friends.

Funeral services were held from the Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford Tuesday, June 10th at 2 p.m. with Carl Cummings officiating.

Music was furnished by C. Ray McCain and Mrs. Sydney Vogel.

Bearers were Steve Sawyer, Tom Parman, Larry Sawyer, Scott Sawyer, Rob Dinsmoor and Larry Sawyer.

Burial was in Fairview cemetery at Bedford.

Mrs, Arthur Steele of Henderson, Iowa, sister of Laura Harover, passed away July 11, at the Mercy hospital in Corning.

Funeral services were held at Carson Iowa July 15.

Several ladies accompanied Mrs. Harover to the services.

Stevens, Edna Mary Cavett -

Edna Mary Stevens, 86, a former Lenox resident, died May 19 at 8:18 p.m. in the  Greater Community Hospital at Creston. Mrs. Stevens lived in the Lenox community until

moving to Creston about 1945.

She was born Aug. 15, 1888 at Lenox, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. Cavett and was united in marriage to Clark Stevens at Corning, Iowa March 18, 1908.

One infant son preceded her in death as well as her parents, husband, and 2 sisters.

Survivors include nieces and nephews, several sisters-in-law and 1 brother-in-law.

She served as a housekeeper for 13 years, at Greater Community Hospital until her retirement. She was a member of the Christian Church and the Women's Club.

A memorial has been established to the Christian Church in Creston.

Funeral services were conducted from Keating-Lindsay Funeral Home in Creston Wednesday, May 21 at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Lester Pearson officiating.

Burial was in Fairview cemetery at Lenox.

Stoaks, Estella Maude Atkin -

Estella Stoaks, 90, died at the Rosary hospital in Corning Monday.

Survivors include one son, Raymond Stoaks of Ames; 3 daughters-in-law, Mrs. Hazel Stoaks of Lenox, Mrs. Berniece Stoaks of Lenox and Mrs. Ruth Martin of St. Joseph,

Mo.; one brother Charles Atkins of Clearfield; 2 sisters, Mrs. Verna Schroeder of Denver, Colorado; and Mrs. Mildred Smith of Iona, Idaho, 14 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren  and  3 great great grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. at the Methodist Church in Clearfield with Rev. Floyd Newbrough, pastor of the Lenox United Methodist Church officiating.

Burial will be in the Lenox cemetery.

Stoaks, Estella Maude Atkin -

Estella Maude Atkin, daughter of Charles E. and Nancy J. Nicola Atkin, was born in Lenox, Iowa, February 16, 1885 and departed this life at the age of 90 years, five

months and thirteen days at the Rosary Hospital in Corning, Iowa, where she was a patient for 5 weeks.

She grew to womanhood and attended schools in the Lenox and Blue Grove community.

At an early age she became a member of the Lenox Christian Church and was an active and faithful member in all associations. In 1942 she transferred her membership to

the Methodist Church in Clearfield, Iowa.

On September 27, 1905, she was united in marriage to Fred A. Stoaks and they established their home on a farm 1½ miles south of Stringtown in the Salem vicinity, where they

lived for 35 years. Here their five sons were born, Raymond, Lyle, Cleo, Max and Rex (twins).

In 1940 Fred and Stella moved to a farm 3 miles southeast of Clearfield. There they resided for nearly 24 years. On October 8, 1964 they moved to the present home in Clearfield.

In 1943 infant twin grandchildren, Max and Marge Stoaks came to live with them. As the children grew up the grandparents felt the responsibility of seeing that they received an education, attending all school activities with them and sharing their problems as well as their joys.

Stella was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Fred, who died December 4th, 1964, and four sons, Lyle, Cleo, Rex and Max, a daughter-in-law, 3 sisters and two

brothers.

She leaves as her survivors a son, Raymond and his wife Mildred, 3 daughters-in-law, Hazel and Bernice of Lenox, and Ruth Martin of St. Joseph, Mo. 14 grandchildren, 26

great grandchildren and three great, great grandchildren 2 sisters Verna Schroeder of Denver, Colorado, and Mildred Smith of Iona, Idaho and 1 brother, Charles B. Atkin

of Clearfield, nieces, nephews along with other relatives and many friends.

In her past few years, even though failing health come to her, she kept her love and sense of humor for all the young people and especially her grandchildren for whom

her love was ever present. She was a kind and considerate wife, mother, grandmother, sister, friend and neighbor.  She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Funeral services were held Thursday, July 31st from the Methodist Church in Clearfield with Rev. Carl Cummings officiating,

Thompson, Jessie Grace Cowan -

Mrs. Claude Reynolds received word of the death of her sister, Mrs. Jesse Thompson of Chadron, Nebraska Sunday.

Mrs. Thompson grew up in Lenox and graduated from the Lenox high school. She taught in rural and Lenox schools. She was a graduate of Northwestern University, then went

to Chadron, Nebr., and was instructor at Chadron for several years.

She married E. L. Thompson, a druggist of Chadron, and the couple has two children, Dr. Everett Thompson of Albany, New York, and Peggy Jean Merrick of Sacramento,

California. She has five grandchildren and one great grandchild. Also a brother, Everett Cowan of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Services will be held today at Chadron.

Thompson, Jessie Grace Cowan -

Born Dec. 11, 1891 near Missouri, Mo. she was the daughter of Wm. Everett Cowan .and Mary Ellen (Ella,) Easten Cowan.

In 1900 the family moved Lenox, Iowa. She graduated from the Lenox high school with the class of 1910. She then taught in rural and the Lenox schools. After graduation from Northwestern University she became an instructor in the Nebraska State Normal at Chadron. Mrs. Thompson was the widow of E. L. Thompson, who operated a drug store in Chadron for many years before retiring. He passed away in 1962.

She was active in many Chadron organizations. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, the Penwomen's Club, Midwest Chaparral Poets of Nebraska of which she was post laureate for 3 years, also PEG, Ivy Leaf Chapter of Eastern Star, Capt. Christopher Robinson Chapter of D.A.R., the National League of American Pen Women and the Chadron Culture Club.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Margaret Merrick of Sacramento, Calif., a son, Dr. Wm. Everett Thompson of Albany, New York, a sister, Mrs. Claude Reynolds of Lenox, Ia.,

a brother, Everett A. Cowan of Chauteau, Okla., five grandchildren and one great granddaughter and many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

She was a perfectionist in all her endeavors.

From our circle, a golden link has fallen, one by one the chain is lengthened in our Father's House, and we shall take our place when we have finished our service here.

Funeral services were at Grace Episcopal Church with clergyman Rev. Richard F Mills.

Interment was at Greenwood cemetery at Chadron, Nebraska.

Tully, Mazie Naomi Copeland -

Mazie Tully, 89, a resident of the Lenox Care Center, died Friday, July 4th.

Mazie Naomi Copeland, daughter of Edward and Lucy Athey Copeland, was born at the Copeland farm home four miles west of Lenox on November 17, 1885. She attended

rural school in Grove Township and moved with her family to Lenox at the age of 14.

She attended Lenox High school and worked in a millinery shop for some time.

She was a long time member of the United Presbyterian Church.

On October 22, 1907, she was united in marriage to Herbert Tully at her parents' home in Lenox. She and her husband made their home on the farm where she had lived as a child

and resided for 48 years then retired to their home in Lenox in 1956 and spent the following years there until his passing on October 18, 1973.

She then became a resident of the Lenox Care Center where she had many friends and acquaintances. She passed away July 4th at the age of 89 years, 7 months, and 17 days.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Herbert, her parents, one sister Mamie Hill and 3 brothers, Charles, Lewis, and Edward Copeland.

Left to cherish memories are her son Donald, daughter-in-law Mineva and two granddaughters, Gwen Maynes and husband Harold, Bonnie Schrader and husband Larry; also

12 great grandchildren, Kim, Karen, Paul, Arnold and Lyle Maynes, and Kirk, Brent, Shane, Todd, Tina, Troy and Shad Schrader, one sister, Nona Potts of Montezuma, Ia.,

nieces, nephews and many friends.

Concern for her family, friends and neighbors well-being meant much to her.

Wainwright, Leonard W -

Leonard W. Wainwright, 73, of Urbana, Ill,, owner and manager of the Hamilton Hotel, died at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 16 at Carle Foundation Hospital.

Mr. Wainwright was born June 8, 1902 at Lenox, the son of Samuel and Lydia Ann Wolfe Wainwright. He married Eva J. Jamison on Aug. 7, 1930 at Seymour, Iowa.

Surviving are his widow; a daughter, Mrs. William (Kay) Van Law, Decatur, five grandchildren; and a brother, Carroll of Syracuse, Kans.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr Wainwright had been owner and manager of the Hamilton Hotel in Champaign for the past 32 years. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church Champaign,  the Champaign Urbana Elks Lodge, The Campaign Moose Lodge, the Lions Clubs and the Urbana Town Club.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. July 19th at the funeral home in Urbana.

Warden, Glenn A -

Glenn A Warden, 59, treasurer of Taylor County, died at the Mt. Ayr hospital Monday following a lingering illness.

Mr. Warden was named to the treasurer's position Oct. 19th, 1969, later being elected to the post with his elected term starting January of this year.

Funeral services will be held this morning at 10 a.m. from the Shum-Novinger Funeral Home in Bedford.

Wanda Campbell, Deputy Treasurer, was appointed by the Board of Supervisors to fill the position until the next general election.

Warden, Glenn A -

Glenn A. Warden, son of Averill J. and Annis W. Cobb Warden, was born Jan. 22, 1916, in Worth county, Mo., and departed this life on Aug. 11, 1975, in the Ringgold county hospital, Mount Ayr.

At an early age of four years Glenn A. moved with his parents to a farm located in Ringgold county near Blockton, Iowa.

He completed his high school education at Blockton in 1930 at 14 years of age. For a five-year period he worked for Production Credit Association at Creston and Storm Lake, Iowa, as assistant Secretary-treasurer.

In 1941 he was called into military service and served his country for seven and one-half years as first lieutenant in the U.S. Army in both the Pacific and European theaters.

On April 17, 1948, he was united in marriage to Eleonore Schoener at Heidelberg, Germany. Together they came to this country and established their residence in Blockton, Iowa. To this union was born one son, Edward G.

For 25 years he was involved in a private insurance business and operating a farm. Believing strongly in the betterment of the community, he served as mayor of Blockton, was a member of Bethany Lodge No. 320, A.F. & A. M., American Legion Post No. 443, Blockton and the Bedford Lions club.

He was a member of the Tent Chapel Church of Christ.

Glenn A. very capably held the office as treasurer of Taylor county for the past five and one-half years. He loved his family dearly and will be sadly missed by his wife, son and mother also many relatives and a multitude of friends.  He was preceded in death by his father, Averill J Ward in 1959.

Glenn A's life was spent in service to others and with love for his fellowman.

Service were held Thursday August 14th at Shum-Novinger funeral home in Bedford with Rev Carl Cummings in charge.  Mrs Bernice Lynch, organist, accompanied Mrs Rexie Davis and Mrs Esse Freed.

Pallbearers were Hank Seiffert, Esse Freed, Benne Miller, Orlin Henson, Allen J. Thompson and Orville Ridnour.

Interment was in Rose Hill cemetery, Blockton, with military honors by Blockton Legion Post.
