Butcher, Eunice -
Mrs Eunice Butcher, 72, died in her sleep about midnight, Thursday at the home of
her daughter, Dr Helen Butcher at 1810 34th St, Des Moines.
Also
surviving are 2 other daughters: Mrs Harold Wohlenhause, of Cumberland, Mrs Dick Davis of Chesterton, Ind; 8 grandchildren, and 2
sisters, Mrs Evan Brannon of Lenox and Mrs Clarence Ethington of
Diagonal and a brother, Gene Woods of Clearfield. Her husband, Dr Will Butcher
died a few years ago.
The
funeral was Monday with burial in the Woodland cemetery at Des Moines.
Attending from this vicinity were Mr and Mrs Evan Brannon, Mr and Mrs Lonnie Barker and Mr and Mrs Clarence Ethington of
Diagonal.

Last
rites for William Hays who died in Clearfield Tuesday, Oct 17 were held Oct 20
at the Varner-Crew Funeral home. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery at Bedford.
William
Hays, son of William and Susanna Mumford Hays was born July 19, 1873, and
departed this life at Clearview Rest Home Oct 17,
1961 at the age of 88 years, 2 months and 28 days.
He
was born in a log cabin 7 miles southeast of Bedford, in Jackson township. He
was the youngest of 9 children. His father died when he was 3 months old.
On
February 17, 1897, he was united in marriage to Evalena Grace. To this union were born 5 children: Verla (Mrs Frank Ecklin) of Lenox,
Sheila ( Mrs Herman Wurster)
of Clearfield, Berthel (Mrs Nelson Ledgerwood) of Bedford, Argyl of Afton and Virgil of Diagonal.
His
entire life was spent in Taylor county. He will be remembered through out the country as an old time fiddler. He started
playing before he was 9 years old.
He
patiently and faithfully cared for his wife who was an invalid for 12 years,
prior to her passing May 28, 1961.
He was
preceded in death by his parents, 6 sisters, 2 brothers and one grandson.
He
leaves to mourn his 5 children, 20 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, many
nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Johnston,
Mary Richardson -
Mary Richardson, daughter of Benjamin
and Delila Richardson, was born near Sigourney, Ia.
Dec. 2, 1867 and departed this life Oct. 27, 1961 at the home of her daughter, Mr and Mrs Clarence Downey, near
Bedford, Ia at the age of 93 years, 10 months and 25
days.
When
a small child she moved with her parents to a farm in Taylor county, Ia., where
she grew to womanhood.
On
Feb 22, 1883 she was united in marriage to E J (Bud) Johnston and to them six
children were born: William F, May, Hazel, Mannie,
Emma and Winnifred. Mrs Johnston and
her companion in life lived on a farm in the Oak Hill community near Gravity
for many years. Here the church provided the spiritual guidance for this home
as together they received from the soil of Mother Earth the results of their
daily efforts, always sharing with family, friends and neighbors the blessing
of helpfulness as all were welcome at any time in their home.
Mr Johnston passed away Jan 18, 1961 after almost 78 years of married life together.
She leaves to share in the sorrow of her passing, one son Mannle Johnston and his wife of Lenox; one daughter, Mrs Emma Downey and her husband of Bedford; 9 grandchildren, 13 great
grandchildren, 4 step-great granddaughters, 4 great great grandchildren and 2 great great step grandchildren, a
sister, Mrs. Ella Laird of Colorado Springs, Col., a sister and brother-in-law, Mr and Mrs John Frey of Westminister, Colo. and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Mrs Johnston was a loving mother and a kind and considerate neighbor. She will be
missed by family and friends.
Funeral
services were conducted by Carl Cummings at the Methodist church in Gravity
Tuesday afternoon, Oct 31 with burial to Washington cemetery. Due to serious
illness Mrs Mannie Johnston
was unable to attend.

Keith, John -
John
Keith, 83, a former resident of Lenox, died Sunday evening at the home of his
son, Frank Keith in Red Oak. Two other sons survive: Lee of Burlington, also,
and Albert of California; one daughter, Mrs. Ola Warner of Moorhead, Minn., and
a number of grandchildren.
His
wife died a few years ago and he had lived with his son four years. Mr. Keith
was a former town marshal of Lenox.
Services
were Wednesday afternoon at the Bender Funeral Home, with the Rev. James Eddy
officiating. Burial was in the Walnut Grove cemetery at Corning.

Knotter, L T (Ted Jr.) -
Mr and Mrs A I Gray rereived word this week of the death of the Rev L T Knotter, Jr, 36 who died Sept 28 in an automobile accident in
Dallas, Tex.
Ted Jr was the son of the Rev and Mrs L T Knotter, Sr, former
pastor of the First Presbyterian church here.
He
was the minister of the Mesquite Presbyterian church which he established
recently near Dallas.
He
had lived in Phoenix and Globe, Ariz before going to
Texas. He was a graduate of Western Seminary, Pittsburg, Pa. He was returning
to his home after taking his wife, a registered nurse to work at Veterans
hospital, Dallas.
Besides
his parents, he is survived by his wife, Anne, three sons, LT III, David and
Paul; a daughter, Michele Ann and a sister, Mrs S O
Clark of Phoenix.

Estella -
Mrs Estella Manroe of Des Moines died there Monday night.
The funeral will be at St Ambrose Cathedral, Des Moines, Thursday morning with
burial here that afternoon.
Mrs Manroe was a sister of Mrs Marybelle Finn of Boone. She had several cousins here.

Roy
(Jie) Manroe, died Saturday
in Kansas City, Mo. He had worked in his barber shop as usual last week and had
entered a hospital for eye surgery.
Services
were conducted from the Bender Funeral home Tuesday afternoon with the Rev. A J
Clements officiating. Burial was in the
Lenox cemetery.
Obituary-
LeRoy,
the son of Franklin F and Emma O Manroe, was born in
Lenox, Iowa, May 21, 1886. He died in the Osteopathic Hospital, Kansas City,
Mo., October 21, 1961, at the age of 75 years and 5 months.
He
lived all his life in Lenox where he followed his profession as a barber since
1912. He was baptized in the Lenox Christian Church in March, 1915, and has
been a member of that church ever since.
He
was preceded in death by his, wife Lula, and his daughter Lola.
He
married Mrs Lola Moffett May 29, 1945. He leaves to
cherish his memory his wife Lola; three sons, Weldon and Charles of Kansas City
and Robert of Lenox; one daughter, Mrs Betty Webb of
Creston; two stepsons, Bill Moffett of Buena Park, Calif,
Earl Moffett of Mid Way City, Calif, two step
daughters, Mrs Weldon Manroe,
Kansas City, Mrs Delores Ambrose of Gravity; 7
grandchildren; 12 step grandchildren; his sisters, Mrs Dollie Turman of Clarinda, Mrs Mae Munson of Des Moines, Mrs Jennie Consolver of Cedar Rapids; his brothers, John
and Ben of Lenox and Fred of San Diego, Calif, also
many other relatives and friends.

Pennebaker, D S -
D S Pennebaker, 93, died
Monday morning at the Creston hospital. He was taken there only a few days ago.
Mr Pennebaker was born in Pennsylvania and came
to Iowa to 1894. He lived on a farm near Sharpsburg until 8 years ago when he
built a home in Lenox. His wife died since their retirement.
Services
are being held Wednesday afternoon at 2 p m at the Presbyterian Church, in
Sharpsburg, with the Rev James Eddy officiating. Burial will be in the Conway
cemetery.
Six
children survive: five sons, Dr E R Pennebaker,
Lenox; Dell Pennebaker, Clearfield; Harry Pennebaker, Sharpsburg; Charley Pennebaker of Ottawa, Ill; Dr J C Pennebaker of Corning; one
daughter, Mrs Faye Heller, who had been living with
him; also 13 grand children, 36 great grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Mrs Edna Ranck and daughter, Mrs Audrey Fisher, returned last week from McMinnville, Ore., having been called
there by the death of Mason Ranck, a brother-in-law.
Mason Ranck was a former resident of this community.

Rupe, Mary Jane Wilson -
Mrs Mabel Rupe, 78 died at her home here Thursday
morning. Services were Saturday at the Methodist church, Rev A J Clements
officiating. She was preparing to go to spend the winter with her son.
OBITUARY
Mabel
Jane Rupe, daughter of Frank E and Bessie Wilson, was
born July 4, 1883, near West Branch, la., and passed away Dec 7, 1961 at
Lenox. She moved with her parents to
Greenfield in 1885. In 1902 the family moved to Ellis, Mo., where she met her
future husband.
Mabel
Wilson and Claude Rupe were married in 1903. They
moved to Kansas City where their three children were born: Laura M, Carl L.,
and Frank, who lived only two hours. They moved to Holt, Mo. in 1919 and Mr Rupe passed away in 1926.
Mabel
moved to Lenox and lived with her mother until her death. Laura passed away
April 27, 1948.
Mabel
joined the Methodist Church, Jan 20, 1903 and has remained in this faith all
her life.
She
leaves her son, Carl L Rupe and wife, Ruth, of Dunnell, Minnesota; granddaughter, Doris June Ballard and
husband, Robert of Inglewood, California; granddaughter Janet Nelson and
husband, Robert of Dunnell, Minn;
and five great grandchildren, Charlotte and Danny Ballard and Michael, Danny
and Patricia Nelson. Also a son-in-law, Charles Alexander of Leadore, Idaho.
She
also leaves a brother, Bert R Wilson, Red Oak, Iowa; a sister Nelle Butler and niece Hazel, Lenox; a brother, Fred Wilson
and wife, Frances, Lake Crystal, Minn; and sister,
Bertha Maharry and husband Frank of Lenox, and
nieces, Genevieve Hughes, Kathleen Harover, Dorothy Cramblit and Mildred Larson and their families. She
also leaves many loved friends and dear neighbors, and she was dearly beloved
by all who knew her.

Schafroth, Grace Hill -
Grace
Hill Schafroth, daughter of Jack and Lucy Hill, was
born Aug 8, 1884, in Taylor county, la., and passed away Oct 30, 1961 at her
home at the age of 77 years, 2 months and 22 days. She spent her entire life in the Lenox and
Corning communities.
She
was married Feb 25, 1914 to Joe B Schafroth who
survives her. She also leaves her 3 children: Owen Schafroth of Corning; Lucille Reynolds of Des Moines, and Mynne Poindexter of Ottumwa, her daughter-in-law, Hattie Schafroth,
sons-in-law, James Reynolds and Rod Poindexter, 9 grandchildren, 6 great
grandchildren, 2 sisters, Mrs Claude Swartz of
Gravity, and Mrs Wes Miller of Corning, and a host of
relatives and friends. She was a wonderful mother an adored Grandma and a
friend to everyone.
She
was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Bert, Otto and Edd Hill, and one sister and three brothers who died in infancy.
Funeral
services were held Nov 1, 1961 at 2 p. m. in the Methodist church in Lenox,
la., with the Rev A J Clements officiating. Pall bearers were her grandsons
David, Stephen and Lynn Schafroth, Ronnie Symonds and
Joe and Jimmie Poindexter. Duane Eigenheer was
honorary pall bearer. Interment was in Lenox cemetery.

Charles
K Shoenhair, 85, died at the Greater Community hospital
in Creston on Thursday, Oct 26. He had been ill the past 2 years.
Funeral
services were Saturday day at Creston with David Lenhart and Jay Wilson officiating. Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.
Mr Shoenhair was born Oct 24, 1876, at Dittigen, Wurttenburg, Germany.
He came to the United States with his parents in 1880 when he was 4 years old.
He lived in the Lenox vicinity until 1928 when he moved to Creston.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, 1 brother and 1 daughter, Erma
May.
He
was married at Sharpsburg, Feb 1, 1910 to May Duckett who survives. Also surviving are 2 daughters, Mrs A L
(Fern) Knight of Davenport and Mrs. Eldon (June) Griffin of Cedar Rapids, 3
sons, Charles W Shoenhair of Kansas City, Mo., Carl R Shoenhair Of Tulsa, Okla,
and Kenneth Shoenhair of Creston, 9 grandchildren, 3
great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mr Shoenhair was a farmer in the Lenox community until
he retired and moved to Creston in 1928. He was a member of the Christian church.
Relatives
attending the funeral from Lenox were Miss Linnie Heath, Miss Julia Stremmel and John Schoenhair, also Mrs Otis Wall of
Clearfield.

Walker, Ethel Baird -
Mrs Ethel Baird Walker, 88, a native of Carroll county, died Friday, Nov 3 at a
rest home in St Louis. She had been ill since suffering a stroke last June.
Reared
in the Mandeville and Bogard communities, Mrs Walter was the last of six children of Dr W C Baird and
Janie Earickson Baird. Her father was a pioneer
physician in the Bogard area and became an ordained
minister at the age of 59. He built a wide reputation in both the practice of
medicine and as a religious leader.
Mrs Walker was born Jan. 19, 1873 and grew to womanhood in the Bogard vicinity. She was the widow of Edmond S Walker, who preceded her in death in
1917. After the death of her husband Mrs Walker lived in Lenox several years then moved to the
St Louis area in 1922.
Most
of the time since she made her home with a daughter, Miss Mary C Walker, in
Webster Groves.
Mrs Walker was a member of the Methodist church in Webster Groves and a charter
member of Bogard Chapter 271, Order of the Eastern
Star. She was honored by the OES several years ago with the presentation of a
lifetime honorary membership. She was a past matron of the chapter. Her
membership at death was with Salome Chapter No 264, Lenox.
She
is survived by these children: Miss Mary C Walker of the home; Mrs Henry A Miller, St Louis; Jack H Walker, Salt Lake
City, Utah; Victor E Walker, St Louis and Baird G Walker, Portland, Oregon. The
family also includes 12 grandchildren, eighteen great grand children and 2
great great grandchildren.
Her
son, W W Walker of Lenox preceded her in death Jan
10, 1948.
As a
young woman, Mrs Walker was an early day music
teacher in Carroll county and paid visits to her many pupils by riding
horseback.
Services
were held in St Louis Sunday, Nov 5, after which the body was taken to the
Dickerson-Rice mortuary at Bogard.
A
memorial Eastern Star service was held at 2 Monday, Nov 6 at the Dickerson-Rice
chapel. Graveside rites and interment were at Smith cemetery where Mrs Walker's husband is also buried.
Mr and Mrs Ray Cheese of Lenox and Mr and Mrs Henry Walker of Greeley, Colo,
attended the Bogard service. Mildred Cheese and Henry
Walker are grandchildren of Mrs Walker.

Wallace, Doris Jean
Anderson -
Mrs Chester Wallace, 37, of Benton, died Sunday afternoon at the Creston hospital
after an extended illness. She leaves her husband and seven children; 6 girls
and one boy, Samuel; the oldest one, Betty entered ISU this fall and the
youngest, Wanda is 5.
Mrs Wallace was the former Doris Jean Anderson. She was born in Nebraska but moved
to Iowa when 19 years of age. She was a member of the Mt Ayr Methodist church, OES No 356, also a past noble grand of the Benton Rebekah lodge.
She
was a sister-in-law of Mrs C E Dixon. The funeral was
Wednesday at Mt Ayr with burial at Benton.

Whipp, Nettis Jane Loudon -
Mrs G H Whipp, 88, of College Springs died Tuesday in a
nursing home at Clarinda. Close relatives in this area are her son, Lloyd and grandson
Forrest and families. Two sons, two daughters five grandchildren and 18 great
grandchildren survive. The funeral was Wednesday at the Methodist Church at
College Springs.
