Bickerd, H C "Doc" -
Mr.
and Mrs. L. B. Anderson and Mr and Mrs Earl Smith received word Monday of the death of a
brother-in-law, H C (Doc) Binkerd of Whittier, Cal. Mrs Bickerd is a sister of Mrs Anderson and Earl Smith. Mr Bickerd lived in Lenox at one time and was a worker in the
Hardman Grocery store. He also farmed
several years in the Calvary neighborhood.

Brown, Lee -
Several
from this community attended the funeral of Lee Brown, 74, of Diagonal who
passed away Thursday evening in the Clarinda hospital. His body was taken to the home of his son,
Merle, formerly his home, and at 1:00 Sunday was taken to the church where
services were held at 2:30. Burial in
the Diagonal cemetery.

Cochrun, Thomas Reed -
Thomas
Reed Cochrun, son of Dr Alfred Cochrun and Damasis Reed Cochrun,
was born near Lenox on a farm March 11, 1892, and passed away at his home 2935
Missouri Ave., South Gate, California, on May 9, 1957. Memorial services were
held at Sylvan Chapel in Huntington Park, California on March 11, interment was
in beautiful Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
His
wife, Murle Ball Cochran passed away in June 1953 and
her resting place also is in Forest Lawn.
He
leaves to mourn his loss, his widow. Ethyl Kanoff Cochrun who gave him wonderful loving care during the last
two years of his illness, three sisters, nieces, nephews and a host of cousins
and friends, many of whom live in and around Lenox. The late W H Madden was a
cousin.
Casket
bearers were his associates in the office of the American Can Company where he
was employed for approximately twenty years. Tom, as he was known to all his
friends and neighbors, was a wonderful friend and will be greatly missed by all
who knew and loved him.

Last
rites were held for James Ralph Crew in the high school gym Thursday afternoon.
The local ministers, Rev. Graham, Rev. Ball and Rev. Dailey officiated.
Son
of James and Viola Crew, Ralph was born in Linn County Iowa, Aug. 11, 1886 and passed away at Greater Community hospital
in Creston Feb. 25, 1957 at the age of 70 years.
He
attended Clearfield school and graduated with the class of 1904. On July 25,
1912 he obtained certificate of licensed embalmer from Hohensehuh - Carpenter Mortuary, Des Moines,
June.
15, 19l5 he was married to Marie Grossmann. One son, Morton was born to this
union. Ed Grossmann, a brother-in-law, came to live with them in 1919 and has
been raised as one of the family. Ralph
entered furniture and undertaking business in 1912 with his father, James and
also worked closely with his brother, Ivan, of Diagonal.
He
was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Flossie. He leaves to mourn, his wife, Marie, son
Morton and wife Helen, 3 granddaughters, Tana Jean, Vee Ann and Sally Marie, brother-in-law, Dr Ed B Grossmann
and wife Dorothy and children, Edward B and Deanna of Orange City, two brothers
Ivan of Diagonal and Fred of Portland, Oreg., a
sister, Bessie Barrans of Broadvent,
Oregon and brother-in-law, Frank Ewalt of Clearfield,
several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Burial
was in Clearfield cemetery.

Funeral
services for Mrs Effie Harshaw,
long time resident of Clearfield Community, were held here last week. She
passed away at O'Dell Nursing home where she had been a patient 3 months.
The
daughter of Mr and Mrs John Bladon, Effie was born near Terra Haute, Ill., August
29, 1876. With her parents, she came to Iowa in 1893 and located on a farm
northeast of Clearfield. She was united in marriage to Hugh Harshaw on November 11, 1899. To this union two
sons were born, Floyd who died in infancy and Fred, with whom she made her
home
for many years.
She
was a member of the Methodist church of Clearfield.
Survivors
include her son Fred and wife Mary, 2 sisters-in-law, Mrs Anna Bladon and Mrs Hattie Bladon of Clearfield as well as a host of nieces and
nephews.

Joe
Holmes died at the Rosary hospital this morning, Thursday. The body is at the Bender Funeral Home. No
arrangements for services have been made. Mr Holmes
suffered a heart attack a few days ago.

Mrs Louis Moore and Mrs Dennis Mullin received word of the death of their
brother and son Maurice J Mullin, 53, formerly of Omaha, who died in a
California hospital Aug 2. He was buried Aug 6 with Requiem Mass celebrated at
Mt Mathias church in Huntingdon, Calif., burial in Holy Cross cemetery.
He is survived by
his wife Modele, two sons, Dennis and David in the
Navy, a daughter Mary, a brother Robert D Mullin and a sister Mrs Louis Moore of Kent and a daughter-in-law and two
granddaughters. Two of his nephews John Moore in the Navy at San Diego and
Robert D. Moore of Whittier, Calif., were pall bearers.

Mrs Alva Hicks received word Saturday morning of the
death of her father Lew Nickels at Quimby, Iowa, who
had been making his home with Mrs Hick's sister Mrs Ellen Pinkerton. Funeral services were held Monday at
Clarinda.

John Parkhurst,
87 a former Clearfield resident of the Maloy and
Redding vicinities died Wednesday at a nursing home in Esterville. He was survived by a son, Bill, and a
daughter, May Ray of Colo. Also a
sister, Mrs. Tom Jamison of Clearfield.

Mr and Mrs Dave Henton and son
Larry were called to Topeka, Kansas last Thursday by the sudden death due to
drowning of their nephew Lester Procter,
age 14 years. Mrs Henton remained with her sister for a few days returning home Sunday.

Funeral
services were held here [Gravity] at the Methodist church on Friday afternoon
for Mrs A J Reisdorf of Flippin, Ark. She had been ill for many months. She leaves
to mourn her passing, her husband. Al, several step children, one sister Miss
Naomi Van Nice of Los Angeles, Calif., one brother, Walter Van Nice of Omaha.
Bernice
grew up here in Gravity, attending school here, but had been away for many
months. Burial was in Gravity cemetery. Those from out of town attending were
her husband, Al Reisdorf of Flippin,
sister, Miss Naomi Van Nice of Los Angeles, Calif., Mr and Mrs Chas Reisdorf of
Clear Lake, la., Mr and Mrs Arthur Reisdorf of Duluth, Minn., Mr and Mrs Wm
Christensen and Mrs Walter Van Nice of Omaha, Mr and Mrs Herman Beemer of
Lenox, Mr and Mrs Ilo Wilson, Mrs Flo Swanson, Horace Beemer and son Jack of Bedford.
Walter Van Nice, a brother from Omaha was unable to attend on account of
illness.

Funeral
services for John Melvin Shoemaker, 60, of Des Moines were held at the United
Presbyterian Church in Clearfield Friday. Burial was in the Clearfield
cemetery. He was married to the former Hazel Brown of Clearfield.

Mrs Elsie Tallyn, 63. of Minonk, Ill., died Tuesday
morning at her home there. She was a niece of Morris Huxtable of Lenox. Mr Huxtable left to attend the funeral at Minonk Thursday afternoon.
