Bill
Bennett, 54, died of a sudden heart attack Tuesday afternoon at the Greater
Community hospital in Creston.
Mr.
Bennett was a farmer of the Lenox area.
He
was born Nov. 19, 1923 at Lenox, Iowa, the son of Granville and Ida Cochran Bennett.
He
was married at St. John's Catholic Church in Omaha Jan. 17, 1943.
Survivors
include his wife, Marge and four children Tom Bennett of Colorado, Mick of
Creston, 2 daughters, Linda (Mrs Richard Notz) of Lenox and Judy Cink of
Sioux
Falls,
South Dakota. Seven grandchildren, Johnnie, Tommie and Jason Bennett, Annette
and Jeff Notz, Leslie and Delcey Bennett, one brother, H. R. Bennett of Creston
and one sister, Irvel Chaney of Des Moines who also mourn his loss.
Funeral
services will be held at 10:30 Friday morning at the St. Patrick's Catholic
Church in Lenox with Father Daniel O'Connell officiating. A Rosary will be said
at the
Larkin-Bender
Funeral Home in Lenox at 8:00 o'clock tonight (Thursday).

Bill
Bennett, a farmer of the Lenox community, died suddenly at the Greater
Community hospital in Creston on Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 28.
Mr.
Bennett, son of Granvllle and Ida Cochran Bennett was
born Nov. 19, 1923 at Lenox. He graduated from the Lenox high school with the
class of 1941.
On
Jan. 17, 1943, he was united in marriage to Margaret Mary Riebscblager at St. John's Catholic Church in Omaha, Nebr., where he lived for several years
and was employed
by Prucha Transportation Co.
In
the spring of 1952, he with his family moved to the farm where he resided until
the time of his death.
Left
to cherish his memories are his wife Marge, sons, Tom, Mick, daughters Linda
and Judy, sons-in-law Richard and Phil, daughters-in-law, Rosie and Barb, seven
grandchildren, Johnny, Tommy, Jason, Annette, Jeff, Leslie and Delsey whom were the idol of his life, one brother, Robert
and his wife Alberta of Creston and one sister, Mrs. Irsell Chaney and her husband Robert of Des Moines nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles,
a host of friends and neighbors.
He
was a kind and loving husband and father. His untimely death brings sadness and
sorrow to the hearts of his loved ones and friends.
Rosary
services were held at the Larkin-Bender Funeral home Thursday evening.

Mass was held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church at 10:30 Friday morning with
Father Daniel O'Connell officiating.
Organist
was Mrs. James Hughes.
Interment
was at North Fairview cemetery, Lenox.
Casket
bearers were Dr. John Thomson, Clyde Davis, Art Kuipers,
Bill Barrans, Lanny Douglas
and Dick Walters.

Harry
Dunn, 73, a farmer from rural Lenox, died Friday, January 10th at the Iowa
Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines where he had been a patient for several weeks.
Thomas
Henry (Harry) Dunn was born March 6, 1902, at St. Anthony, Iowa, the son of
James E. and Nellie Jordan Dunn.
He
and his wife, Mildred, moved to the Lenox-Sharpsburg area about 7 years ago,
where he was engaged in farming. His wife preceded him in death in July, 1974.
Left
to mourn his passing are two sisters, Mrs. Joe (Nellie) Megan of St. Anthony, Ia and Mrs. Gale (Laura) Oswalt of Minneapolis, Minn.
A
step-daughter, Mrs. John (Betty) Kitzman of Lenox, 6
grandchildren, Mrs. Roger Brown, Mrs. Stan Curtis, Mrs. Dick Boulden, Ron and Kathy Kitzman all of Lenox and
Steve Kitzman of Enid, Oklahoma, 3 great grandsons, Mikel and Mark Curtis and Ryan Brown and 2 nieces, Mrs.
Irvin Cockerham of Story City, Iowa and Mrs. Donald
Vollmer of Denver, Colorado, also survive.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and a brother, Dan Dunn.
Funeral
services were held at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lenox Monday
morning, Jan. 10 at 11 a. m., with Father Daniel O'Connell officiating.
Music
was furnished by Mrs. James Hughes.
Bearers
were Leo Evans, Dale Purdum, Elvin Miller, Earl
Baker, Melvin Williams and Roland Boltinghouse.
Interment
was in North Fairview cemetery.
A
memorial fund has been established for Renal Dialysis Department, Iowa Lutheran
Hospital, Des Moines, Iowa.

Howard Eno, of Lincoln, Nebraska, died recently in that
city. He was an uncle of Mabel Boltinghouse of Lenox.
Funeral

Glen
M. Hughes, 80, died Wednesday morning in the Rosary hospital in Corning. Mr.
Hughes had made his home here in Lenox the past 8½ years, having retired from
fanning in the Conway area.
Mr Hughes was the son of Isaac Newton and Elizabeth Bruner Hughes and was born
Dec. 16, 1894 at Conway. He was united in marriage to Pearl Cavner Feb. 23, 1923 at Bedford.
Survivors
include his wife, son Glen I of Lenox, three daughters, Mrs. Willis (Darline) Ernest and Mrs. Virgil (Dorothy) Kirby both of
Conway and Mrs. Orlan (Luetta) Kinman of Omaha, Neb. Ten grandchildren and 3 great
grandchildren also survive.
Funeral
services will be at the Larkin Bender Funeral Home in Lenox Friday afternoon at
2:00 with Rev. Floyd Newbrough, pastor of the United
Methodist Church officiating.
Military
graveside rites will be held by the Conway American Legion Post No. 591, of
which Mr. Hughes was a charter member.
Burial
will be in the Conway cemetery.

Glen
Milo Hughes of Lenox, Iowa, son of Isaac Newton and Mary Elizabeth Bruner
Hughes, passed away at the Rosary hospital in Coming, Iowa, on Jan. 29th,
1975. He was born Dec. 16, 1894 near
Conway, Iowa. He spent his entire life in this community, except for the time
he was in service for his country. In 1918 he was called and went overseas to
France
with
his 108th Hospital Co. Later he became a charter member of the Conway American
Legion Post, No. 591, and honorary member of the Lenox Post.
In
early life he joined the United Methodist Church at Conway.
On
Feb. 23, 1921, he was married to Pearl Cavner and
they farmed near Conway until moving to Lenox, Iowa, 8 years ago.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Grace Opal, and an infant
grandson, Joseph Kirby.
Left
to cherish his memory are his wife, Pearl, son and wife, Glen I. and Wilma
Hughes, daughters and sons-in-law, Darline and Willis
Ernest, Dorothy and Virgil Kirby,
Luetta and Orlan Kinman,
grandchildren Joyce and Robert Hoepker, Cleota and Art Tapken, Jolene and

Dean Norton and Doyle DeVoe.

bearers were Roy Johnston, Cecil Ewart, Ed Clipston, Martin Erickson, William Slough, Ben Goecker, Glen Ernest, Robert Hoagland and Herby Hammer. All
were
members
of his World War I unit.

rites were conducted by Conway Post No. 591, American Legion.

was in the cemetery at Conway.

Layne, Verlee -
Word
has been received by the Tyler family from Donald Layne of Omaha, of the death
of Verlee Layne at Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Jan.
6th.
Verlee Layne was the first child born in Sharpsburg, Ia., Sept. 2, 1885, daughter of
Francis Thomas Layne and Mary Wilkin Layne. In later years the family moved to
Lenox
where Verlee attended Lenox Public schools and was a
member of Lenox United Presbyterian Church.
She left
Lenox in 1955, after residing in the same home here for 52 years, to live near
her brother, Frank Layne and family at Albuquerque, New Mexico and sister,
Jeanette
Taylor
of Truth or Consequences, who survive along with nieces and nephews.
She
was a cousin of Jennie Wilkin Tyler, Donald Tyler's mother, and assisted in
securing information for the Wilkin geneaology published in 1962.
She
will be remembered by her friends here as having been a telephone operator for
many years at Lenox Telephone Co., and later employed in the Lenox post office.
Funeral
services and burial were held in Truth or Consequences, N. Mexico Jan. 8th.

Longfellow, Kenneth Larry

Dr.
Kenneth Longfellow, of Clearfield, was killed Friday, when the truck he was
driving left the road near Clearfield.
Dr.
Kenneth Larry Longfellow, son of Wilson and Deloris Burns Longfellow, was born
April 24, 1942 at Bedford, Iowa, and departed this life Jan. 31st due to a
truck accident on an icy road west of Clearfield. He was 32 years, 9 months and
7 days old at the time of his death.
Mr Longfellow graduated from the Lenox high school with the class of 1960.
On
August 5, 1961, he was united in marriage to Carolyn Kay Swank at Lenox, Iowa,
and they lived on a farm near Bedford for four years. He attended Northwest
Missouri
State
University for a year prior to transferring to Iowa State University at Ames,
Ia., where he graduated with a Degree of Veterinarian Medicine with Honors. In
his senior
year
he was honored with the Phizer award. He was a member
of the Phi Zeta Honor Society of Veterinarian Medicine. He had been associated with the Clearfield
Veterinarian
Clinic
since 1971.
Dr.
Ken, as he was known, was an energetic workman and took great pride in doing
his work well, whether it was in the practice of his profession or at their
farm home.

to cherish his memory are his wife, Carolyn Kay and two children, Jody Lee and
Bobbi Lou, his parents, two sisters; Sharron Howes and her husband David of Red Oak, Iowa, Mary Jo and her husband Larry Simms of
Omaha, Nebr., and a brother, Dr. Jack I. Longfellow and his wife, Dr. Diane
Longfellow of Broken Bow, Nebraska, a grandmother, Mrs. Norma Burns of Bedford,
Iowa, and his father and mother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Swank of Lenox,
Iowa, and three bothers-in-law, uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, other
relatives, colleagues, and many friends who were numbered by all who were
acquainted with him.
He
was a kind and loving father and his untimely death brings sadness and sorrow
to the hearts of his loved ones and friends for he will be sadly missed by all
who knew
and
loved him.

were held Sunday, Feb. 2, 1975 at 2 p.m. from the Christian Church in Lenox
with Rev. Carl Cummings officiating.

McPherren, Laura May Reed -
Laura McPherren, 77, a resident of Lenox for many years,
died Sunday Dec. 22 at the Rosary Hospital in Corning, Iowa.
Laura
May Reed, daughter of David and Etta Hodges Reed, was born in Lenox, Ia., on
October 8, 1897. She had two brothers, Charlie A. Reed and Ross R. Reed,
and one
sister,
Alma Becherer.
She
joined the Christian Church in Lenox at Easter time in 1912. She went to the
Lenox school. She was with the Class of 1917 graduates. She taught school 14
years in
Taylor
County. She married George McPherren Dec. 14th, 1932.
Mr. McPherren died July 9, 1955.
She
was a member of the Christian Church and the Rebekah Lodge, and was honorary member of the Navy Mothers organization.
She
leaves a host of nieces and nephews to remember her.
Funeral
services will be held Thursday at 2:00 in the Christian Church with Rev.
Christine Hershberger officiating.

Pennebaker, Adelbert Leroy -
Adelbert Leroy Pennebaker, 86, a resident of the Lenox Care
Center, died January 18, after a gradual failure in health.
Mr. Pennebaker, the son of Doris and Lida Souder Pennebaker, was born near Eden, Illinois
September 15, 1889.
He
grew to maturity in the Sharpsburg, Iowa area and later the Clearfield area
where he was engaged in farming until he retired six or seven years ago.
He
was active in school, church, Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star. Recently he
received his 50 year membership award in the Masonic lodge, which had been his
long awaited
goal.
He was a member of the Clearfield Methodist Church where he attended regularly
until the health of both he and his wife began to decline.
February
14, 1917 he was united in marriage to Flossie Deaver.
To this union, two daughters were born, Anabel Louise
and Ethelmerle.
July
14, 1927 he was united in marriage to, Elizabeth M. Travis.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Flossie, daughter Ethelmerle and her husband Olin W, Smith, two great
grandchildren who died at birth and three brothers,
Jobe,
James and Roy.
Left
to cherish his memory are his wife Elizabeth, a resident of the Lenox Care
Center, daughter Anabel and her husband, Thurman Curphey, five grandchildren, Alan Curphey
and
his wife Jane of Sharpsburg, Sheryl and her husband Harry Sprague of Lenox,
Sandra and her husband, Garvin Greene, Yorktown, Indiana, Lloyd Curphey and his wife, Avis of Sharpsburg and Eula Ruth
Smith of Coffey, Missouri. Eight great grandchildren, three brothers, Harry Pennebaker of Sharpsburg, Charles Pennebaker of Ottawa, Ill., now residing in Florida and Everett Pennebaker and a sister Faye Heller, both of Lenox, a number of nieces and nephews also
survive.
He
enjoyed his many friends and hobbies included raising flowers, traveling,
gathering, cutting and polishing rocks.

Rice, Douglas A -
Douglas
A, Rice, son of Hardin D, and Alice Van Voosh Rice was
born in Oliveh, So. Dakota on June 25, 1888, and
passed away at the Lenox Care Center on Jan. 28, 1975
at
the age of 86 years, 7 months and 3 days.
After
the death of his wife in April of 1963, he maintained his own home in Lenox
until March 18, 1974 when he entered the Care Center.
In
April of 1916, he was married to Minnie Minnick. Six children were born to this
union, all of whom survive. They are Opal (Mrs W A Goodale) of Diagonal, Lewis of Lenox, Paul of Corvallis,
Oregon, Charlotte (Mrs. Dwight Cunning) of Mt Ayr,
Betty, (Mrs. Max Brooks) of Chicago and Jorene (Mrs.
Charles Rankin) of Omaha. He is also survived by four
grandchildren 11 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, several cousins,
one sister, Mrs. Pearl Schroetar of Exira, Iowa. He
was preceded in death by one sister, Mrs. Mae Schroeter and 2 brothers, Lawrence and Fred.
As a
farmer in the areas of Ellston, Mt. Ayr, Diagonal, Clearfield, Maloy,
Gravity, Lenox and Conway he pursued the only occupation dear to him. He loved
grooming his horses and found it difficult to give them up to keep pace with
our faster age.
He
was first to volunteer his services when there was neighborhood illnesses and
rigidly firm about paying his respects when there was a death. He enjoyed his
friends and family, especially delighting in the youngest members. Always, he
took the rough end where there was disagreeable and taxing work to be done. His
presence will be missed.
Funeral
services were held in the Rhoades Wilson Home on Jan. 31 at 2:00 with the Christian
minister, Rev. Larry Squier, officiating.
Music
was provided by Mrs Robert Thomas at the organ with
Mrs. Neva Fisher and Mrs. Nathena Strange singing
"Beyond the Sunset" and "In The Garden."
Pallbearers
were nephews Raymond Rice, Hyatt Rice, Harold Schroeter,
Virgil Olesen, and grandsons, Jim Rice and Brad
Cunning.
Burial
was in Rosehill cemetery in Mt. Ayr.

Saunders, Charles Vernon -
Charles
Vernon Saunders, 57, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles R. Saunders, died
Jan. 18 at Tucson, Ariz., after suffering a massive coronary on Dec. 21st.
He
was born near Lenox on March 22, 1917. A graduate of Lenox high school, Vernon
joined the army and was a Lt. Colonel in the army reserves.
He
joined the Bozeman, Montana police force in 1946 and was named Chief of Police
in 1958. He graduated from the F.B.I. Academy in 1952 and U. S. Army
Intelligence
School
in 1966. After retiring as Police Chief in 1966 he moved to Tucson, Ariz.,
where he was Assistant Chief of Police at the University of Arizona.
He
is survived by his
widow, Dorothy, two daughters, Mrs. Verlee Christie
of Irvine, Cal., and Mrs. Bonnie Bailey of Tucson, Ariz., his brother, Donald
of Lenox, Iowa, and
three
sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Kennedy of Portland, Oregon, Mrs. Grace V. Rogers of
Kennewick, Wash., Mrs. Jean Douglas of Waterloo, Iowa and two grandchildren.
Services
were held Tuesday Jan. 21 at the Davis Monthan Air
Force-Base Chapel by the chaplain, Capt. William G. Sikes. Burial was at Tucson
Memorial Park East Lawn.
Donald
Saunders of Lenox attended the services making the trip by plane.

Sheley, Fred -
Fred Sheley of Gretna, La., son of Mrs Pauline Borden Sheley, was robbed and shot Sunday
evening by 4 males.
He
was taken to a hospital and passed away at 10:30 on Monday morning.
He
had been in the navy about 16 years. His wife and 3-year old son survive.
His
mother and 4 sisters and a half brother all live at Guthrie Center, Iowa, and
attended the services at Gretna.
Mrs.
Georgia Borden, of Sharpsburg is his grandmother.

Lloyd
H. Smith, 84, of 429 Lake St., Mukwonago, Wis., died late Friday evening, Jan. 3,
1975, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Chester Turville of 309 Hill St., Neillsville,
Wisconsin.
Services
were scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Church of Christ in Sheldon, with
the Rev. Mike Drake, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn cemetery at
Sheldon.
Mr.
Smith was born Sept 27th, 1890 at Lenox, Iowa, received his education in Iowa.
In 1920 he moved to Sheldon where he farmed until 1944 and then moved to a farm in
the Granton area. He retired from farming in 1954 and moved to
Marshfield where he was employed by Roddes Plywood
Corporation, now Weyerhaeuser Company, until retiring in 1963.
He
was married in 1916 to Audrey Abbitt, who died in
1964. His second marriage took place in
May of 1965 to the former Grace Perso, who survives
him.
Other
survivors include two daughters, Mrs Chester (Helena) Turville, Neillsville, Wisc and Mrs Arthur (Eunice) Anderson, Tucson, Arizona, 6
grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and one great granddaughter also survive.
Ten
brothers and sisters also preceded him in death.

Stover, Henry R -
McPHERSON,
Kans. The Rev. Henry R. Stover, 79, McPherson, died here Tuesday in a nursing
home where he had been since 1970.
He
was a retired minister of the Church of the Brethren and formerly was a school
administrator.
He
was born. Feb. 3, 1895, at Aultman, Ohio, He was
graduated from McPherson College in 1952 and received a master's degree in education
from the University of Kansas in 1937.
Rev
Stover held pastorates at Lenox, Iowa and Chico, Calif., and was district
secretary for the Church of the Brethren in Northeast Kansas six years.
Services
were at 2 pm in the Church of the Brethren at McPherson with burial in the
McPherson cemetery.

Dora Edith Killinger -
Dora
Edith Tripp, 84, died Thursday, Dec. 26 at the hospital in Mount Ayr, Iowa.
Dora
Edith Tripp was born on November 1, 1890 at Elliott, Iowa, the daughter of John
and Nancy Rudolph Killinger.
She
received her education at the schools in that area. She moved with her family
to Kent, Iowa, in 1914. Dora joined the Methodist Church at Elliot, Iowa, and
became
a
member of the Prairie Star Presbyterian Church at the time of her marriage to
Dayton F. Tripp in June of 1919. She was a very active church worker not only
as a Sunday
School
teacher but was serving as an elder in the Prairie Star Church at the time of
its merger with the Lenox United Presbyterian Church.
She enjoyed
nature and took great pride in her garden and flowers. She would be the first
to look for flowers in the woods in the Spring. Her entire married life was
spent at
the
same home south of Kent where she moved as a bride.
A
few months ago failing health made it necessary that she and Dayton reside at
the Clearview Nursing Home in Mt. Ayr.
Her health continued to fail and she was moved
to
the Mt. Ayr hospital where she passed away on December 26, 1974 at the age of 84
years.
Dora is survived
by her husband, Dayton, two brothers; John R. Killinger of Somerset, Kentucky and Gordon Killinger of Gainsville, Florida, three sisters-in-law, Grace Tripp of
Lenox, Iowa, Ruth Rhoades of Lenox, Iowa, and Maryellen Tripp of Kent, la. A
number of nieces and nephews also survive.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, John and Nancy Killinger and one sister and one brother, Lulu and Ralph Killinger.
Services
were held from the Presbyterian Church Saturday Dec. 28th, 1974 at 2:00 p.m.
with Rev. Wallace Nelson officiating.
Music
was furnished by Roberta Lockhart, organist and Gwen Maynes,
vocalist.
Bearers
were Jeff Mathews, Robert Lockhart, Curt Ostrem,
David Francis, Williard Campbell and Ray Hewitt,
Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery at

Underwood, Bessie Verlee Sweigard -
Bessie Verlee Underwood, oldest daughter of Walter and
Amanda Nation Sweigard, died Friday, January 31st.
She
was born in Sharpsburg, Iowa on October 13, 1893, and lived all her life in the
Sharpsburg area.
She
was educated in the Sharpsburg and Bedford schools, teaching in rural schools
near Sharpsburg.
Mrs.
Underwood was baptized in the Sharpsburg Presbyterian Church on January 20,
1895, and remained a member all her life. At the age of 13 she began playing
the piano for Church service , and continued in this capacity for over
50 years.
On
June 14, 1916, she was united in marriage to Clifford F. Underwood. To this
union were born two children, Helen and Richard.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, 3 sisters, 2 brothers, her husband and
her son and daughter.
She
is survived by her daughter-in-law, Theoma,
grandchildren, Mary and Denis Gibbs of Omaha, Patricia and David Miller of
Sharpsburg, 2 great grandchildren, Jill and Susan Miller, a number of nieces
and nephews many friends.
Mrs.
Underwood's greatest joy was watching the musical and spiritual growth of young
people in her community.
She
taught many children to play the piano and devoted many years to teaching in the Presbyterian
Sunday School.
Funeral
services were held at the Presbyterian Church in Sharpsburg, Iowa Feb. 3, 1975
at 2:00 p.m., with Rev. Wallace Nelson officiating.
Music
was furnished by Linda Spring, soloist with Donna Cribbs, organist.
Pallbearers
were Howard Elder, Leonard Knott, Frank Sweigard,
Dwight Sweigard, James McCrea and Bill Beach.
Those
in charge of the flowers were Helen Trost, Lolene Boydston and Marguerite
Barlow.
Interment was in the Conway cemetery.
