Bailey, Timothy -

Timothy Bailey, 80, a longtime resident of Clearfield, died at the Greater Community hospital at Creston Tuesday morning. He had been a patient there

since Nov. 14th.

Mr. Bailey had been employed by the Iowa Southern Utilities Co., and by the telephone company in Clearfield until his health failed.

Survivors include his widow, Gladys, two sons, Richard of Clearfield and Bill of Portand, Ore., two daughters, Mrs. Vernelle Posten of Perry and Mrs.

Leona Mae Sheets of Creston, six grandchildren and three grand children.

His body is at the Varner funeral home in Clearfield.

Funeral services are pending.

Blood, Fred Douglas -

Fred Douglas Blood, 78, longtime resident of Sharpsburg, died January 20th at the Rosary hospital in Corning.

Mr. Blood, son of Henry and Anna Duckett Blood, was born in Newton, Iowa, July 1, 1891, and died at the age of 78 years, 6 months and 19 days.

Mr. Blood's father died when he was about 3 years old and his mother later married Charles Boyden of near Sharpsburg.

He spent the remainder of his life in and near Sharpsburg.

Mr. Blood was married to Olive Gertrude Nixon on September 15, 1920. To this union two children were born, Leona Maxine Stewart of Sharpsburg, and Jack O. Blood of Guthrie Center.

He was preceded in death by his mother, his father, a sister, Ethel and a half brother, Herman Boyden.

Left to mourn his passing are his wife, two children, eight grandchildren, two great grand children, two half sisters, Pearl Dice and Glenna Nicholson of

Omaha, Nebr., and a half brother, Howard Boyden of Englewood, Colorado, many other relatives and friends.

His entire adult life was spent working for the betterment of the town and community of Sharpsburg.

He was a Veteran of the first World War and served with the Headquarters Company, 351st Infantry, 88th Division.

In 1966 he was baptized and confirmed a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. After serving in the Aaronic Priesthood as Deacon,

teacher and Priest, he became an Elder in the Melchizedrk Priesthood of the Church in which capacity he served faithfully for the remainder of his life.

He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Case, Ray Earl (Tiny) -

Earl (Tiny) Case, 64, a lifelong resident of the Lenox vicinity, died Sunday morning at his farm home south of town.

Mr. Case was born March 14, 1905 in the Stringtown vicinity and was united in marriage to Helen Calvin in 1931. Survivors include his wife and two brothers,

Roy of Prescott and Lloyd of Utah.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon, January 21 from the Christian Church in Lenox with Rev. Donald Briley officiating.

Music was furnished by Sandy Barker, with Irma Wilcox accompanist.

Bearers were Carl Cordell, Howard Elder, Louis Brown, Howard Blake, Dick Brammer and Raymond Dill.

Interment was in the North Fairview cemetery in Lenox.

Case, Ray Earl (Tiny) -

Ray Earl Case, son of John W. and Alta V. Case, was born in Mercer township in Adams County on March 14, 1905 and passed away unexpectedly at his farm home Sunday, Jan. 18, 1970 at the age of 64 years, 10 months and 4 days. He grew to manhood in the same community of his birth and at an early age was baptized a member of the Stringtown Federated Church.

He was united in marriage to Helen Calvin on Feb. 19, 1931. They moved to a farm south of Kent, Iowa where they lived for 2 years, then moved to a farm

east of the Lenox Lake where they resided for 9 years. In 1942 they purchased the farm where he spent the rest of his life.

Surviving him are his devoted wife, Helen, 2 brothers, Lloyd of Bay, Utah., and Roy of Prescott, Iowa, many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He was known as "Tiny" to all, a kind and loving husband, a good friend and neighbor to all who knew him, always ready to lend a (helping hand to anyone in need.

Eckels, Warren Ellsworth -

Warren Eckels, 86, a longtime resident of this area, died January 1, 1970, following a lingering illness.

Warren Ellsworth Eckels, son of James Thomas and Elizabeth Stephens Eckels, was born on a farm in Adams County, Iowa on December 20, 1883 and passed away January 1, 1970, at the  age of 86 years and 12 days.

Mr. Eckels spent most of his life as a farmer in Adams County except for a few years in the Hardware and Undertaking business in Wilsonville, Nebraska

and 7 years on a farm near Raymore, Missouri.

He was united in marriage to Eleanor Huxtable of Kansas City, Missouri March 6, 1912. To this union five children were born, a son, Lew, of Lenox and

a daughter, Flora of Chillicothe, Missouri, a son, Donald, who died in World War II, and a son and daughter who died in infancy.

Mr. Eckels united with the Lenox Presbyterian Church in 1896. He was ordained an Elder of the church in 1926 and served in that office until 1951. He

was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 343 A. F. and A. M. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, Rev. A Raymond, Ed and Clyde, and 1

sister, Dora Chute.

Surviving, in addition to his son and daughter, are his wife, Eleanor, a daughter-in-law, a son-in-law, 8 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and 2 sisters,

Lillian Scott of Grand Island, Nebraska, and Anna O'Riley of Waseca, Minnesota, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Mr. Eckels was a kind and loving husband and father. His grandchildren were his Joy and he will be greatly missed by all.

Funeral services were held at the United Presbyterian Church in Lenox and burial in Fairview Cemetery with Rev. W. H. Sinning of Corning officiating.

Masonic services were held by Tremont Lodge, No. 343, AF and AM of Lenox, with Austin Brown, of Prescott, in charge of the service.

Pallbearers were Dean Eckels, Dunne Spicer, Richard Saccaro, Roger Saccaro, John Saccaro and Jim Saccaro.

Fulk, Mary E Badgett -

Ralph Fulk received word Tuesday of the death of his mother, Mrs. Mary E. Fulk, 88, of Winston Salem, North Carolina.

Mrs. Fulk lived at one time in the early 1900's in the Blue Grove neighborhood.

Other survivors include three daughters and two sons. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. F. Fulk and two sons, both of whom died in 1969.

A brother, Robert Badgett, of Corning, also survives.

Mrs. Fulk had been a visitor in the Lenox and Coming areas on several occasions in the past ten years.

Mr. Fulk left by plane Wednesday morning to attend the services which will be held at Southern Pines, North Carolina.

Hegwood, Ernest J -

Ernest J. Hegwood, 83, an uncle of Leland Hegwood, Irma Wilcox and Erla Barker, all of this area, died November 5th at the hospital in Omaha, Nebraska.

Ernest J. Hegwood was born Oct. 23rd, 1886 to Elizabeth  Knott and, Jason Hegwood in their fawn home southwest of Lenox, Iowa.

He departed this life Nov. 5, 1969 at Archbishop Bergen Mercy Hospital at Omaha, aged 83 years and 13 days. He had been in failing health for several years.

He was married to Clare Jones on Dec. 29th, 1909 in her parents home near Sharpsburg, la. They became parents of 5 children, 3 of whom died in infancy.

The surviving children are Russell Hegwood and Kathryn Hickey, also Helen Hegwood, Charles Hickey and a grandson, Robert Edward, all of Omaha.

He was preceded to death by his wife Clare, a grandson Kevin Charles Hickey, his parents, his brother Al in 1965, and a sister-in-law, Josephine, on Oct. 29,

1969. He was married to Sadie Myers who also passed away in 1965.

He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Eva Sheffield of Staten Island, N. Y., 2 sisters-to-law, 2 brothers-in-law, several nieces and nephews and their families and

other relatives and a host of friends.

He attended Pines No. 6 school and was a member of the United Methodist Church of Sharpsburg.

He farmed for many years and the family raised horses and like his brother, Al,  liked to reminisce about those years.

He and his family moved to Omaha in 1944 where he worked as a carpenter, a painter and in a defense plant.

His hobby was his yard and garden and making others happy. He remained very active until Oct. 31st, when he suffered a severe heart attack. He was a special friend of children of all ages and races, a very generous and warm hearted man who will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Hegwood, Marion Josephine Gordon -

Mrs. Josephine Hegwood, who had been a patient at the Lenox Nursing Home for several years, died Wednesday, October 29th.

Marion Josephine Gordon was born in Peoria, Ill., on Jan. 22, 1885, to William K and Marion Livingston Gordon. She was the 2nd of three daughters. The family came to Iowa when she was 3 years old and she has lived in and around Lenox during her lifetime.

She was married to Al Hegwood on October 25th, 1905 in her parents home in Creston, Iowa. They became parents of 4 children:  Mrs. Dwight (Irma) Wilcox of Lenox, Mrs. Jesse (Erla) Barker of rural Conway, Lester Leroy of Kansas City, Kansas, Leland Allie of Lenox.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Al, a son-in-law, Dwight Wilcox, a sister, Mrs. Cora Gladden, and her parents.

She is survived by her 4 children, 2 daughters-in-law, Dorothy and Helen, a son-in-law, Jesse Barker, 6 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren  and one great great grandson, one sister, Essie Gordon of Oakland, one sister-in-law, Mrs Eva Sheffield of Staten Island, N. Y., and one brother-in-law, Ernest Hegwood of Omaha and several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

8he became a member of Blue Grove Christian Church early in life and later transferred her membership to the Bandit Christian Church, where she was an active and faithful worker until she suffered a stroke which resulted in her final illness. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Funeral services were1 held from the Bender Funeral Home in Lenox Saturday, November 1st at 2 p. m., with Rev. Don Briley, pastor of the Christian Church, officiating.

Bearers were Carl Spring, Frank Stanger, George Grey, Guy Henderson, Francis Wiand and. Raymond Dill.

Burial was in Fairview cemetery in Lenox.

Laxson, Carl M -

Carl M. Laxson, 75, president of the State Bank of Earlville, died in a sudden heart attack while serving as a member of a Legion color guard at a funeral

in Earlville Friday afternoon.

Mr. Laxson was the husband of Mary Floy Overmire a former resident of Lenox, who has cousins and friends in this area.

Mr. Laxson, a banker 53 years, was Earlville town treasurer at the time of his death.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Floy, "Iowa Mother of the Year" for 1963, three sons, five daughters, a sister and 15 grandchildren.

Mr. and Mrs. Guy Henderson and Kay of Lenox are cousins, and drove to Earlville Monday to be with the family.

Mendenhall, Edna Dehart -

Mrs. Edna Mendenhall, daughter of  Mr. and Mrs. H. G. Dehart, died Christmas Day at the Lenox Nursing Home in this city.

She was born July 21, 1897 near Allendale, Missouri. She married J. Holland Mendenhall June 25, 1916 and to this union five children were born.

Mrs. Mendenhall was baptized and was a member of the Lotts Grace Baptist Church, later transferring her membership to the Lenox United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star.

The family lived in Delphos, Malay and Mt Ayr before moving to Lenox in 1943.

She joins in death her husband, parents, two brothers, Elmer and Everett, two sisters, Artie and Clella.

Left to mourn are five children, Mrs. Alpha (Val) Craft of Oakdale, Calif., Ivor B. Mendenhall of San Jose, Calif., Vic Mendenhall of Font Dodge, Iowa, Mrs. Jerry Sheridan (Loris) of Lenox and Elvis Mendenhall of Phoenix, Arizona, one brother, Lowell Dehart of Omaha, Nebr., three daughters-in-law, two sons-in-law, thirteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Eight nieces and nephews plus a host of friends also survive.

Funeral services were conducted at the United Methodist Church in Lenox Dec. 27, 1969, with Rev. Floyd Newbrough officiating.

Music was furnished by Marilyn Beck, Billie Jean Barker and Norma Paymal.

Bearers were Jack Refer, Paul Oxley, Joe Miller, Orval Plants, Herbert Dehart and Clifford Dehart, Burial was in Fairview cemetery in Lenox.

Miller, Kate -

Mrs. Kate Miller, 90, died Tuesday evening at the Lenox Nursing Home where she had been a resident over 3 years.

Survivors include her children, Mrs. Hazel Stoaks, Mrs. Wilma Gray, Mrs. Lela Spoonemore, Mrs. Edna Starks and Mrs. Alberta Calvin all of Lenox, Mrs.

Margaret Curts of Missouri, Harry Miller, Raymond Miller, Clyde Miller and Homer Miller of Lenox, Frankie Miller of Bettendorf, Iowa. Two sons, Lyle

and Albert preceded her in death. She is also survived by 21 grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren and 9 great great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the United Methodist Church in Lenox, with Rev. Floyd Newbrough, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in Fairview cemetery in Lenox.

Osiecki, Joseph -

Sunday, January 4th, Ed Osiecki received word from Minneapolis, Minn., that his brother, Joseph, had suffered a heart attack and was in the intensive

care ward in a Minneapolis hospital. Mr. Osiecki left by plane from Omaha and arrived in Minneapolis Monday morning, only to send word back here that has brother died Monday night.

Lowell Wilson and Mrs. Osiecki drove to Minneapolis to attend the military service on Thursday morning, and all returned home to Lenox Saturday.

Phillips, Hugh Fern -

Fern Phillips, 76, died Saturday evening at his home in Lenox.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Verna Phillips, and a daughter, Mrs. Velda Smith of Garden Grove, Iowa.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock from the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lenox, with Father Reginald Maslinski officiating.

Bearers were Leo Ryan, Larry Rogers, Byron Brown, Raymond Dill, Raymond Miller and Robert Callahan.

Burial was to St. Patrick's cemetery.

Phillips, Hugh Fern -

Final rites were held Tuesday, Dec. 30 for Fern Phillips at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lenox.

Hugh Fern Phillips, the son of Emmer and Nancy Shepard Phillips, was born near Conway, Iowa, on Oct. 10, 1893, and passed away suddenly of a heart attack

at his home Dec. 27 1969 at the age of 76 years, 2 months and 17 days.

He received his education in the country schools near Conway.

Mr. Phillips was united in marriage to Verna Hayes on March 10, 1921, and to this union was born one daughter, Velda. The first years of his married life were spent farming near Conway, moving to Lenox in 1930. He worked for the City of Lenox for several years. He had been in poor health for several years and never

complained, bearing his cross patiently until the end which came suddenly and as a surprise to his friends and relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, two brothers and a granddaughter.

Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Verna, daughter Velda and son-in-law, Dale Smith, a brother-in-law, Leslie Smith, several nieces and nephews.

Burial was in St. Patrick's cemetery in Lenox.

Mrs. Nettie Riggenberg of Kelly, Iowa, mother of Mrs. Floyd Newbrough of Lenox, died Sunday. No further details are available.

Funeral services will be held today at 11 o'clock in Kelly.

Lee Short, 79, died suddenly Tuesday afternoon at his home following a short illness. Mr. Short had retired several years ago from active farm work.

Survivors include his widow, Viola, daughters Maxine Kimball of Battle Greek, Michigan, Darlene Cole and Helen Beckman of Rockford, Illinois, Wilma,

at home, sons Wayne of Cedar Rapids, Jack of Denison, Iowa and Don of Kansas City, Mo.

Funeral services will be this Thursday afternoon from the Bender Funeral Home in Lenox at 2 p. m, with Rev. Floyd Newbrough, pastor of the Methodist

Church, officiating.                                        

Burial will be the cemetery in Lenox.

Sullivan, George Raymond -

George Raymond Sullivan, 69, a former Lenox resident, died Saturday, Jan. l0th at St. Joseph's hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. His death was due to a

heart attack.

Mr. Sullivan was born June 2, 1900. He had spent the past year and one-half at the Beatitudes Retired home in Phoenix. Prior to that he had resided with his

sister and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Weston in Phoenix.

A son, Victor, preceded him in death.

The body was returned to Lenox where funeral services were conducted Saturday from the Bender Funeral Home, with Father Reginald Maslinski officiating.

Bearers were Leo Hale, O. C. Walter, Don Tyler, Harry Walter, Geo. Barrans and Glen Leckliter.

Burial was in Fairview cemetery.

Wilson, Roscoe -

Word was received Monday evening, Nov. 10th, of the death of Roscoe Wilson, 65, brother of Lowell Wilson of this city. Mr. Wilson died at Van Wert, Iowa

of an apparent heart attack, he had been in his usual health and had spent the day working on the roof of his house.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Donald Morris of Bedford, two brothers, Lowell of Lenox, and Ed of Osceola, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday at Leon, Iowa, with burial in the Van Wert cemetery.
