Austin, Stanley -
Stanley
Austin, 71, died at the Rosary hospital in Corning Saturday, January 20th,
after having suffered a stroke Monday. Mr. Austin was the youngest
son
of Merritt and Sarah Linbaugh Austin and was born at
Grant City, Missouri Feb. 10, 1897. He died at the age of 70 years, 11 months
and 19 days.
He
was united in marriage at Mt. Ayr, Iowa to Phoebe
McHenry on July 4, 1917. To this union two sons were born George of Lenox, Iowa
and Claude of Des Moines, Iowa.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, Ralph, Ray, Fred, Earl and
Roy. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, two sons, and two daughters-
in-law,
Lois and Eloise. One brother, William of Redding, Iowa, nephews, nieces and
other relatives and a host of friends.
Stanley
was a kind and loving father and husband and will be sadly missed by all who
knew him.
Funeral
services were conducted from the Bender Funeral Home in Lenox, Monday, January
22nd at 2 p. m., with Rev. Floyd Newbrough, pastor of
the
Methodist
Church, officiating.
Bearers
were Gene Rogers, Larry Rogers, Hugh McCall, Kenneth Young and Walter
Stapleton.
Burial
was in Fairview cemetery.

Mrs.
Charles (Mildred) Beck, 72 died at noon Wed., Mar. 6 at the Rosary hospital in
Corning, following a lingering illness. Mrs. Beck had been a patient in
the
hospital seven weeks.
She
is survived by her husband, one son Roy and his wife Darlene and three
grandchildren of Sharpsburg, and a brother, Carl Herbst of Lenox.
Funeral

Funeral
services for Mrs. Charlie (Mildred) Beck, 72, were held Saturday, March 9th at
2 p.m., from the Methodist Church in Lenox. Rev. Floyd Newbrough,
pastor
of the church, and Rev. John Kess officiated.
Mrs.
Beck died Wednesday, March 6th, 1968 at Rosary hospital in Corning, Iowa, where
she had been a patient for seven weeks.
Mildred Herbst Beck was born December 19, 1895 in Mercer
township, Adams County, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Charlie Williams
Beck December
24,
1919 and to this union were born two children, Phyllis who passed away July 12, 1956; and Roy of
Sharpsburg, Iowa.
Mrs.
Beck joined the Mercer Center Methodist Church at an early age and in 1955 her
membership was transferred to Lenox Methodist Church, where she remained
an
active member until her recent illness. She was active in the Woman's Society
of Christian Service, serving as Circle Chairman and doing all she could in all
areas
of
the society. She taught the Adult Bible Class for several years, devoting many
hours each week to preparation to bring freshness to the study each week.
She was
a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and was presently serving as Chaplain of the
Auxiliary. She was a member of Salome Chapter No. 264 Order of Eastern Star.
Surviving
her is her faithful husband Charlie, son, Roy and wife, Darlene, granddaughter,
Judy and husband, Richard Lucht and grandsons,
Richard and Terry, and a brother, Carl Herbst of
Lenox, nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Her
parents, a brother, Clyde and two sisters, Anna Freeman and Lula Cupp preceded her in death.
Music
was furnished by Helen Brokaw and Billie Jean Barker with Irma Wilcox,
accompanist.
Bearers
were Lonnie Barker, Leonard Knott, Clark Moore, Roland Boltinghouse,
Raymond Miller and Teddy R. Boyer.
Burial
was in Fairview cemetery.

Granville
L. Bennett, 82, died Monday at his farm home two and one-half miles south of
Lenox. Mr. Bennett had retired on his own farm.
Survivors
include one daughter, Mrs. Robert Cheney of Des Moines, two sons, Robert of
Afton and Bill of Lenox and a number of grandchildren.
Services
will be held today (Thursday) at the Methodist Church in Lenox at 2 p. m.
Burial
will be in the Lenox cemetery.

Bennett,
Granville L -
Granville
L. Bennett, son of Daniel Irving and Amanda Owen Bennett, was barn August 20,
1885 in York County, Nebraska.
He
lived there, and for a time farther west in Nebraska until he was 10 years of
age. Then the family moved back to Iowa to a farm 4 miles north of
Clearfield.
He
was united in marriage to Ida Cochran on April 22, 1909. To this union was born
five children: Irvel,
of Des Moines, Robert of Creston and Bill of
Lenox.
Two passed away at birth.
He
spent his entire life farming in the Lenox community with the exception of 2
years near Corning.
He
was a long time member of the Lenox Methodist Church.
He
passed away at his home south of Lenox on Jan. 22, 1968 at the age of 82 years,
5 months, and 2 days. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1960, also
by
his father and mother, two sisters and a brother, and the 2 infant children.
He
is survived by his children: Irvel Chancy and husband
Robert of Des Moines, Robert and his wife Alberta of Creston, and Bill and his
wife Marge of Lenox.
He
has 9 grandchildren: Patty Gregersen and Betty Chancy
of Des Moines, Gary, Phillip and Denise Bennett of Creston, Tom Bennett of
Boulder, Colo., Mick Bennett of Creston, Linda Notz of Lenox and Judy Bennett of Lenox.
When
Beverly, Judy, Galen and Allen Vetterick came into
his family he was happy to have them as his grandchildren, too, and they loved
him as their own
grandfather,
There are 9 great grandchildren, who gave him much pleasure: Pam Gregersen of Des Moines, Lisa and Laura Bennett of Creston,
Chris, and Jeff Bennett
cf Creston, Johnny and Tommy Bennett of Boulder, Leslie Bennett of Creston and
Annette Notz of Lenox. He has a niece, Julia Kyle and
nephew, Glen Goldsberry of
Davenport,
Iowa and a nephew, Donald Routh of Emmetsburg, Iowa.
There
are other relatives and many friends who will greatly miss him in the days to
come.

Mrs.
Minnie Bycroft passed away at the Colonial Rest Home
at Lenox, Iowa February 22, 1968 where she had made her home since November 15,
1951.
Minnie
Groff Bycroft was born in Nodaway township, Taylor
Co., Iowa December 7, 1879, the daughter of Catherine and John Groff. It was
here, in the
company
of her brothers and sisters, that she grew to womanhood.
On
July 3, 1901 she was united in marriage to George F. Bycroft.
They spent most of their married life on a farm in the Fairview vicinity where
her son Henry now resides. They moved to Corning in the spring of 1930,
residing there until the death of her husband George on August 3, 1950.
She is survived by one son Henry and daughter-in-law
Gladys of Brooks, two grandchildren Marcia Cerven,
and husband Dale of Corning, and
Ronald Bycroft and wife Jeannetta of Gibbon, Nebraska, six great-grandchildren besides
a host of nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Bycroft had a devoted
interest in small children which she maintained throughout her entire life. She
was an active member of her church and
neighborhood as long as her Health permitted.
One
of her favorite prayers well expresses her reason for living:

feel that I have done

little thing for- someone

than myself.

by look, word, or deed

bear a burden that I feel
Was
greater than my own.
Funeral
services were held from the Roland Funeral Home in Corning February 24 at 1:30
p. m. conducted by Rev. Howard Wells. Burial was in the Prairie Rose Cemetery.
Flower
bearers were Mrs. Russell Vogel and Mrs. L. C. Anderson. Pallbearers were L. C. Anderson, Russell
Vogel, Olin Shuler, Ed Naven, Floyd Van Pelt and
Cliff Groff.

Leo Caskey, son of W. G. and Meda Caskey, passed away Feb. 23, 1968 at the Corning hospital, after
a brief illness. Leo was born March 29, 1892 in Madison
Co.,
Iowa, but has lived most of his life in Adams Co. near Lenox. He was married to
Dora Stoaks Jan. 29, 1013. To this union one little
daughter was born who passed away at birth. He was baptised Oct. 13, 1906 and all through his life he has been a devoted church worker.
He
is survived by his loving wife Dora, and three brothers, Nevin in Montana, Homer in Council Bluffs and Judson at Bedford, and a large number
of relatives and friends.
Memorial
services for Mr. Leo Caskey were held Sunday, Feb.
25, 2:00 p. m. from the Lenox Christian Church. The officiating minister was
Rev. David S.
Shaeffer.
Mrs. Dorothy Caskey of Omaha was soloist with Mrs.
Ruth Boltinghouse as accompanist on the organ.
Bearers
were: Lew Eckels, Robert Morris, Clifford Preston,
Wayne McFee, Kenneth McFee,
Joe Maynes Jr. Interment was in south Fairview
Cemetery.

Albert
Cheney, 91, who has been a resident of the Lenox Nursing Home the past six
years died Wednesday morning Mar. 6th at 11 o'clock.
Mr Chaney had recently been discharged from the Rosary hospital in Corning and
returned to the Nursing Home. Earlier this week he was re-admitted to
the
hospital and died Wednesday from coronary occlusion.
His
nearest living relative is a sister, Mrs. Sallie Shawler,
who is also a resident of the Nursing Home.
Funeral
services are pending at this time.

Chaney,
Albert M -
Funeral
services were conducted Friday afternoon for Albert M. Chaney, 91, who died at
the Rosary hospital in Corning March 6th. Services were held
from
the Bender Funeral Home in Lenox at 2 p. m., with Rev. David Shaeffer, pastor of the Christian Church, officiating.
Mr.
Chaney was born Feb. 18, 1877, and came to Iowa Jan. 15, 1891 at the early age
of 14 years, from Weldon, Illinois.
Albert
was always interested in farming and the many problems that go with farming. As
all who knew him, Albert was a great reader and his mind was very alert until
his recent illness. He was very knowledgeable on many subjects and loved to
talk and visit on major world topics and problems of present day concern.
He
made his home for years with Abe Beck, helping farm before coming to Lenox. He
came to the Lenox Nursing Home in April 1962 where he has lived
until
his death. Albert loved to joke and kid everyone at the Home. He will be
missed. Every one knew Albert. He loved to give.
When
his illness overtook him, he was very conscientious of his approaching death
and made all arrangements in detail. Albert remained unmarried throughout his
life. Every one knew and loved Albert and he will be missed by a host of
friends-not only the town people but throughout the entire area.
Albert
leaves one sister, Sallie Shawler of Lenox, 4
nephews, Orval Shawler of
Creston, Bryan and Robert Shawler, both of
California, Jim Shawler of Lenox,
and
a niece, Pearl Barngrover of Colorado Springs, Colo.
Bearers
were Orval Bassett, Orville Bricker, John Davenport,
Homer Miller, Donald Bubb and George Jones.
Burial
was in Fairview cemetery.

Eldie Conway, 75, died at 10 a.m., January 14th at Newark, New York. Mr. Conway was
married to a cousin of Warren Eckels of Lenox,
Dorothy Eckels,
a
former resident.
Mr.
Conway was a mail carrier while of a resident of Allerton,
Iowa, and carried the mail on the east coast before his retirement.
Services
were held in Newark.

Roy
Lewis Fitzgerald, son of Ethel and Elzy Fitzgerald
was born December 1, 1903 at Eldorado Springs, Missouri, and departed this life
January 16, 1968
at
University Hospitals at Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of 64 years, one month and ten days.
Most
of his life was spent in Ringgold County, Iowa.
On
April 30, 1922 he was united in marriage with Virda Warner of Davis City, Iowa. To this union one son was born: Kenneth E.
Fitzgerald of Ontario, Calif. Also
surviving
are three grandchildren: Marcia Weeks, Jo Lynn Watson and Rodney Fitzgerald of
Ontario, Calif, one brother, Orville E. Fitzgerald of
Conway,
Iowa
and one sister, Nellie Edna Leighton of Lenox, Iowa, two sisters-in-law, Mrs.
Winnie Fitzgerald of Conway and Mrs. Fern Fitzgeraid of Grand River,
Iowa,
one brother-in-law, Forest Morgan of Kellerton, Iowa,
also six nieces and six nephews.
He
was preceded in death by his father and mother, one sister, Beulah Pearl
Morgan, one brother John Fitzgerald, one niece Joan Cordell, and one
great
grandson.
He
was a faithful member of Full Gospel Assembly Church in Omaha, Nebraska.
Funeral
services were held at the Creston Assembly of God Church January 19, 1968, with
Reverend Fred Smith of Omaha, Nebraska and George Mosby of
Creston
officiating. Burial was in the Maple Row cemetery at Kellerton,
Iowa.

Ralph
D. Gaines, 81, died Wednesday morning at Rosary hospital in Coming. Mr. Gaines
had been a long-time resident of the Lenox area.
Survivors
include his wife, Daisy and one brother, Charles of Hamilton, Missouri.
Services
will be held Friday afternoon, January 19th at 1:30 at the Bender Funeral Home in
Lenox. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.

Howard died suddenly of a heart attack Wednesday morning, January 31st at his
home in Oakland, California.
Mrs.
Bonnie Howard, the former Bonnie Maharry, is a
sister-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Orville Bricker and Mrs. Fern Bell.
Mrs. Howard is a former Lenox resident.

J. Hurley, 57, a former resident of Lenox, died Sunday at Oak Park, Illinois,
where he made his home.
The
son of the late Ott and Mary Hurley, he grew up in
Lenox and graduated from Lenox high school.
He
is survived by a son, Donald in Chicago, a brother and three sisters.
Funeral
services will be conducted at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lenox at 10
o'clock this (Thursday) morning, with burial in the Lenox cemetery.

E. (Eb) Johnson, 83, formerly of Con way, died Sunday
at the home of his son, Merly Johnson at Grant City,
Mo. His body was brought to the Shum

o'clock with burial in the Lexington cemetery.
He
is survived by his son and daughter-in-law of Grant City, also a brother, Les
Johnson and family of Lenox.

Coral
S. Knapp, 56, of Sharpsburg, died Friday, January 12th at the Veterans hospital
in Omaha, Nebraska. He was well known in the Sharpsburg Community,
where
he had lived since 1935.
Mr.
Knapp, son of S. I. and Alice Brower Knapp, was born June 23, 1911 near Vona, Colorado in Kit Carson County. He lived with his
parents on a ranch they homesteaded in Colorado until the family moved to Dundy
County, Nebraska where he grew to manhood and graduated from the Benkelman,
Nebr. high school.
When
arriving in Sharpsburg, he went to work for the Blair Produce, a business he
later was to operate for himself.
On
Dec. 4, 1938, he was united in marriage to Verle McMahill at Maryville, Mo., and to them one daughter, Karole Jeanne was born to bless their home.
He
was inducted into the US Army on Dec. 8, 1942 and served in the European
Theater of Operations, being discharged Nov. 4, 1945.
He
was preceded in death by his parents,
one brother, Rollo S Knapp and an infant sister, Sylvia. Left to cherish memories
of his good life are his wife,
Verle and daughter, Karole Jeanne of Bleesfield,
Michigan.
One
sister, Mrs. Robert Blair of Sharpsburg, two brothers, Eljus Knapp of Arvado, Colo., and Merril Knapp of McCook, Nebr., plus other relatives and many
friends
also mourn his loss.
Mr.
Knapp joined the Presbyterian Church in Champion, Nebr., in his youth. He was a
sincere friend and a kind and loving husband and father and will be greatly
missed by all who knew him.
Funeral
services were held in the Presbyterian Church at Sharpsburg, Iowa January 15th.
Military honors were given be Gravity American Legion Post No. 578.
Bearers
were Douglas Boyer of Newton, Iowa, Glen Mullin, Clearfield, Iowa, Richard
Chitty, Akron, Ohio, Steven Sweeney, Lenox, Iowa, Richard Gold,

Clarence
E. Rubin, eldest son of Frederick and Mathilda Rubin
was born March 27, 1895 in Adams Co. and passed away from a sudden heart attack
at his home near Lenox, February 23, 1968 at the age of 71 years and 11 months.
He
lived his entire life in Adams and Taylor Co. He was a World; War I Veteran,
He
was married to Zola Starr September 28, 1926, at the Little Brown Church at
Nashua, Iowa and they made their home in Corning where he served as sheriff of
Adams Co. for three terms. In 1934 they moved to a farm near Lenox.
Mr.
Rubin was a member of the Methodist Church in Lenox, a member of Instruction
Lodge No. 275 A. F. and A. M. Corning, Iowa 'and he was a member of
American
Legion at Corning.
He
was proceeded in death by his wife Zola, December 11, 1966, his parents and one
sister Loy Oman..
He
is survived by two brothers, Fred of Corning and Lonnie of Broomfield,
Colorado, two nephews, Carroll Oman, Denver, Colo., and Donald Oman, Cozad,
Nebraska. Also five half sisters: Minnie Huntington, Corning, Iowa, Pauline
Lindquist, Ft. Myers, Florida, Evelyn Kapple, Council
Bluffs, Iowa, Edith Bell, Loveland, Colorado, Verda Lyons, Clear Lake, Iowa, and two half brothers, Emmett Rubin, Bedford, Iowa and
Joe Rubin, Brooks, Iowa, a sister-to-law
Marie Repass of Villisca and a
number
of nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
Funeral
services were held Feb. 27 at 2 p. m. at the Methodist Church in Lenox, with
Rev. Floyd Newbrough, pastor, officiating.
Burial was in Methodist Grove cemetery.

William
Raymond Weeda, son of Dick and Kate Weeda, was born in Ringgold County, Iowa, near Tingley, on January 9, 1910. He passed away at Greater
Community
Hospital in Creston on Jan. 25, 1958 at the age of 58 years and 16 days.
He
was united in marriage to Floy Van Loon Hancock on
March 27, 1941. To this union was born one son. Surviving are his wife, his son
Delbert of Lenox, three stepchildren whom he took as his own when they were
young, Harold Hancock of Conway, Georgia (Mrs. Orval Hays) of Diagonal, Darlene (Mrs.
Curtis
Stamps)
of Diagonal, 13 grandchildren: Todd and Kip Weeda,
Debbie, Danny, Denny and Doyle Hancock, Jim, John, and Gary Hayes, Douglas,
Steven,
Janet,
and Shari Stamps. Also, two sisters: Mrs. Clyde Borrusch (Emma) of Mt. Ayr, Mrs. Paul McKay (Margaret) of Cheyenne,
Wyoming, five brothers: Ira of
Belle Plaine, Irven of Conway,
Elmer of Delta, Utah, Wayne of Mandan, North Dakota, and Allen of Osceola, also
nieces, nephews and a host of friends. He
was
preceded in death by his parents.
In
1927, he heard the Gospel story of Jesus and made his choice to walk in His
Way, which he did faithfully until the end.
He
farmed east of Lenox until he was stricken with illness six months ago. He was
a devoted, loving husband and father, a helpful neighbor and will be
greatly
missed by all who knew him. He never complained and didn't give up even to the
last. All loving care and medical skill was given him before God chose to call
him home.
