Popken, Lulu E Swigard -
Lulu
E. Swigard, 79, died Aug. 1, 1974 at her home
in Tomkins Cove, New York. She was a native of Sharpsburg, Iowa, and is
survived by her husband, Fritz Popken and her sister,
Mrs.
Bessie Underwood as well as several nieces and nephews.
The
following tribute was read at her funeral services in Sharpsburg on Aug. 10th.
It could simply be said that with Lulu's passing another wonderful person has
left this earth. Many have counted it their privilege to have known such a
talented, kind and most gracious lady. Others have described her as a
"pioneer in her field>—a fine professional." To
others
she was a good neighbor. She loved her family and cherished the memory of her
friends in her home town. To her husband she was 'the complete wife and as
someone
has
said of them both—"they shared such a unique happiness—far above average
and rarely found" and he himself says:, "I do not weep at her passing
for she no longer suffers
and
tears would only cloud and mar the happy fond memories of my wonderful time
with her."
Their
first meeting was one of utter chance, neither knew that the other existed but
from then on as though a magnet drew them toward each other their path's would
cross again.
Then
there came a time when she was faced with physical discomfort and he was
downcast with emotional distress. They comforted each other and out of this
grew a love that lasted— happily for both of them—until she left us all.
Lulu
was a teacher first and always. She loved her profession with the total
devotion one cherishes but rarely finds. There was a lasting bond of affection
between her students and her. And though she was severe and uncompromising in
her demands he students loved her and her face would radiate with happiness
when surrounded by young eager minds seeking the truth through her.
In
her chosen field she always remained the pioneer. She searched for better
understanding and, finally although her body was racked with pain she labored
hard to write a book
to
tell how she had thought and taught.
She
was never too busy to lend a helping hand; As fate would have it she was on the
first American ship to be torpedoed by the Germans in WW II, and after being
rescued she
worked
among the sick and injured until they reached the safety of the port. The
officers of the ship adored her for the help she had given and presented her
with a sterling silver replica of a Viking ship as a token of their
appreciation. The ship symbolizes her pioneering spirit, and yet it was given
for humanitarian effort. Each of us would
treasure
its possession and yet it shall be placed in the church of her home own because
it belongs to more than any one of us.
Lulu
was a great person and where many know but by the shadows they cast she faced
it resolutely and showed us all its beauty as mirrored in her soul. [Buried Conway
Cemetery, Taylor Co. Iowa]
