Adah J. Allison, daughter of Charles and Fannie Gray Jones, was born at Trenton,
Nebraska
May
1, 1899 and died at Papillion. Nebraska, on October 12 at the age of 81 years,
5 months,
and
11 days. Her family moved to Iowa when she was a small child. She attended
school in
Iowa
and the Grand Island Business College. She also taught school in Taylor County
Iowa.
Adah was united in married to Harold Allison on June 6, 1922, in Colorado Springs,
Colorado.
She
had been a member of the Presbyterian Church. She was an active member of the
United
Methodist Women holding several offices in her circle and in the general
society.
She
was proceeded in death by her husband on June 8, 1980 and by a brother and a
sister.
Survivors
include a daughter, Constance Campbell of Omaha; 1 son. Donald of Omaha;
a
sister, Connie Stewart of Eldon, Missouri; a brother, G.R. Jones of Stuttgart,
Arkansas;
and other relatives and friends.

Archibald, Ruth Swigard Dickson -
Ruth Swigart Archibald, the daughter of Grant and Eva McAninch Swigart, was born
September 11, 1915 in Lott's
Creek
Township, Ringgold County, Iowa. She died September 24 at the Memorial
Medical Center in Springfield, Illinois
following
a long illness. She was sixty-five years old.
Ruth
received her early education in the rural schools of Ringgold County and
graduated from Mt. Ayr High School in
1933.
She received her B.S. degree in home economics from Iowa State University in
1939. Following graduation she
went
into extension service, first in Adams and Union counties and then in Jasper
County as Extension Home Economist.
She
also taught briefly in Glidden and Mt. Ayr.
She
was united in marriage with Neville Dickson February 12, 1947, They had one
daughter, Ruth Annette. Following the death of her
husband
on December 2, 1949 Ruth purchased and operated a small dry goods and
ready to wear business in Lenox.
She
was united in marriage with Roy Archibald February 22, 1953. They farmed in the
Lenox and Clearfield communities until
February
5, 1964 when they moved to Knoxville. Ruth returned to extension service as
Marion County Extension Home
Economist.
Many
staffing changes saw Ruth's responsibilities shifting to include other
counties. She specialized to some degree in
human
development, family life and the applied art programs in the Ottumwa area. She
was recognized by the National
Association
of Extension Home Economists with the "Distinguished Service Award"
and "The Grace Frysinger Fellowship".
Ruth
also accepted leadership responsibilities in the American Home Economics
Association, the Iowa Home Economics
Association
and the National Association of Extension Home Economists. She was active
locally in the American Association
of
University Women, the First United Methodist Church, the United Methodist
Women, Business and Professional Women's
Club and many
other community offices.
Preceding
her in death were her parents, a sister, Cleta: her
husband, Neville Dickson; and on April 7. 1980 her husband,
Roy
Archibald.
Survivors
include her daughter and son-in-law, Annette and Scott Thomas of Springfield,
Illinois: two sisters, Dora (Mrs.
Charles
Bennett) of Mt. Ayr and Donna (Mrs. Wilbur Greimann) of Kellerton; four
brothers, Francis Swigart of Lamoni,
Merritt Swigart of Des Moines, Weldon Swigart of Creston, and Paul Swigart of Davis City, as well
as other relatives.
Services
were held Saturday, September 27 at the First Methodist Church in Knoxville.

Lloyd
Samuel Bartrem of Omaha. Nebraska, died October 21,
1980 at the age of 71 years, three months and 25 days. He
was
the son of Samuel and Nora Bartrem.
He
grew to manhood in the rural Lenox, Iowa area. He was united in marriage to
Edith Crispie in July of 1928.
Born
to bless this union were seven childre:. Mrs. George
(Betty) Isman of Lenox, Melvin Bartrem,
deceased: Melody
Bartrem of Omaha, Nebraska; Mrs. Jack (Nancy) Rusco of Lenox; Norleta Reed of Bedford, Donald Bartrem of California
and
Ronald Bartrem of Omaha, Nebraska.
Others
left to cherish his memory are a sister, Mrs. Joe (Ruth) Trost of Lenox, 23 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren,
nieces.
nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
Proceeding
him in death were his parents, son Melvin. and three great grandchildren.
He
worked for the Union Pacific railroad for thirty-five years until his
retirement five years ago. He was a kind and
loving
father and his greatest pleasure was spending time with his grandchildren and
family.

Beemer, Bruce O (Spike) -
Bryce
O. (Spike) Beemer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sim Beemer of
Conway, died August 23 following
a massive coronary
suffered
while camping in the mountains near his home in Cody, Wyoming. He was fifty-one
years old.
He
was born May 4. 1929 near Conway where he spent his childhood days. He was
united in marriage with Beverly Ruth
Barnett
in 1949 at the Conway Methodist Church.
Mr.
Beemer was employed as a lineman by the Department of Energy. The family had
resided in Wyoming for twenty-nine
years.
He was a past exalted ruler of the Cody Elks Lodge and a former district deputy
grand exalted ruler. He was a
member
of Professional Ski Instructors, the Cody Volunteer Fire Department, and the
Eagles Lodge.
Survivors
include his wife, Beverly; his parents, one son, Jack and wife, Linn of Palmer,
Alaska; two daughters, Janet
Woodenlegs and Connie Cook and husband. Rich, all of Cody; three granddaughters, Jackie
and Jona Woodenlegs and
Kelly
Beemer;
two grandsons, Colton Beemer and Clinton Cook; five brothers, Virgil, Dale and
Jerry, all of Conway, Dean of Cody and
Tim
of Blair. Nebraska; five sisters, Betty Boyer of Clearfield, Joyce Ridnour of Walnut, Lu Schofield of Lenox, Alice A.

Brown,
Austin Stewart -
Austin
Stewart Brown, the eldest son of Virgil Stanley and Mary Katherine Doran Brown
was born April 1, 1912 near
Witty,
Missouri. He died September 2 at the Rosary Hospital in Corning at the age of
sixty-eight years, four months
and
one day.
He
received his early schooling in Missouri and moved to Cromwell with his family
in 1926. He graduated from
Cromwell
High School in 1929 and from Creston Junior College in 1933. Austin moved to
the Stringtown community in 1933.
He
was united in marriage with Ellen Grace Gibson August 9, 1936. The couple lived
in Port Angeles, Washington for nearly
five
years where Austin was employed at a paper mill. They returned to Iowa in 1941
and farmed north of Stringtown until
he
suffered a heart attack in 1964. He then became a salesman and later agency
manager for the Iowa Farm Bureau
Insurance
Company in Adams County. He made many friends through his work and thoroughly
enjoyed visiting with people.
Austin
joined the Cromwell Congregational Church at the age of fourteen and later transferred
his membership to
the Stringtown Community Church. He was active in the church
and was presently serving as president of the
church
board.
He
was an active member of Circle Lodge #555 A.F. & A.M. at Prescott, joining
in 1957. He assisted with graveside services
whenever
requested. Austin was a past Master of his lodge, a Thirty-second Degree Mason
and a member of the Des
Moines Consistery. He was also a past Patron of the Prescott
Chapter #554 of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Austin
was active in the Farm Bureau organization, serving on several state committees
as well as being a past president of the
Adams
County organization. He was a member of the Corning Chamber of Commerce and for
many years assisted with the
soybean
and corn growing contests. He was also active in his political party.
Preceding
him in death were his parents and a sister Lorene. Survivors include his wife,
Ellen Grace; a son Byron Cecil
and
wife Marilyn of Prescott, two daughters, Carolyn Ruth Beran and husband Reverend John C. Beran of Manila,
Phillipines and Laura Cathryn Davis of Lincoln. Nebraska: seven
grandchildren, Mark, Beth and Gail Beran, Beverly
and
Lynette Davis and Jodie and Clint Brown; three brothers, Delman,
Darrel and Roscoe, all of Lenox; two sisters, Thelma
Brinker
of Pemberville, Ohio and Wilma Boswell of Treynor,
Iowa.
Services
were held Friday September 5 at 2 p.m. at the Stringtown Community Church with Reverend Gerald Rogers
officiating.
Music was by Norma Paymal, organist and Mildred
Walter, vocalist. Selections were "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In
The
Garden".
Casket
bearers were Stanley Brown, Norvan Brown, Steven
Brown, David Brown. Roger Brown and Carl Israel.
Honorary
bearers were Paul Sieddenburg, Norman Klejch, Garth Haer, Jerry Davis,
Max Blackburn, Chris Christofferson,
and

was in the Stringtown Cemetery with Masonic Riles

Edward Lee -
Edward
Lee Havens, the second son of Mr. and Mrs. Marion D. Havens of Greenfield, was
born January 28, 1956
at
the Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset. He died September 26 at
Saint Anthony Regional Hospital in
Carroll,
Iowa at the age of twenty-four years, seven months and twenty-eight days.
Edward
graduated from Lenox Community High School in 1974 with the goal of entering
the field of medicine. He
graduated
with honors from Sioux Empire at Hawarden and received his Bachelor of Science
degree from Buena Vista
College
at Storm Lake. While in college, he was president of the Student Council,
Lieutenant Governor of
the
Iowa-Nebraska District of Circle K Outstanding Young Man of America 1978,
co-chairman of Muscular Dystrophy
Danceathon in 1978 and won many medals and trophies in track and wrestling.
During
the summers of his college years, he engaged in carpentry. Upon graduation, he
joined his brother, Alvin in the
carpentry
trade. He planned to attend the Des Moines College of Osteophathic Medicine and Surgery next fall.
Edward
is survived by his parents, a brother Ronald, his wife Candace and family of
Ames, a brother Alvin and wife Karen
of
Greenfield, grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Molln and Mrs. Lena Farber, as well as many other relatives.

were held Monday, September 29 at the First United Presbyterian Church in
Greenfield with Reverend
Wayne
Norris officiating. Mrs. Cindy Armstrong was the organist and Mr. and Mrs.
Wayne Ray the vocalists.
Pallbearers
were Ron Weller, Dick Wallace. Roben Easier, Larry Riley,
Howard Nelson, and Norman Parrott. Honorary
pallbearers
were Roy Barlow, Dale Amendt, Bruce Amendt, Ron Thiele, Doran Davis, and Edward Barlow.

was in the Greenfield Cemetery at Greenfield, Iowa.

Jones,
George Rex (Farmer) -
George
Rex "Farmer" Jones, 85, one of the most widely known farmers on the
Grand Prairie, died Saturday, October
18
in the Stuttgart, Arkansas Memorial Hospital.
Mr.
Jones's association with the rice industry began in 1920 and his devotion and
dedication to the promotion and
improvement
of all its facets continued throughout his life.
He
served 44 years on tin board of directors of the Arkansas Rice Growers
Cooperative Association, and in the
1950s
was twice selected by the United States Department of Agriculture to represent
the rice industry on agricultural tours
abroad.
He filmed and edited the first documentary about rice farming on the Grand
Prairie.
In
his extensive travels on five continents, so successful were his promotional
efforts on behalf of the rice industry that a letter
addressed
"Mr. G.R. Rice. Arkansas. U.S.A." found its way to his rural mailbox
at Almyra.
Born
July 16, 1895 in Hitchcock County, Nebraska, he grew up on a farm near
Sharpsburg, Taylor County, Iowa. There he
married
Sarah Marie Sweigard January 24, 1917. With his wife
and young daughter, Madelene, he moved to the Grand
Prairie
in
1920, settling on a farm just north of Almyra.
The
Joneses were recognized as Master Farmers in 1938 by the "Progressive
Farmer" magazine. The Master Farmer
award
was not only an unsolicited and well-merited honor to the farmer and his
helpmate, but something more
to
rural life, for it exemplified not only an efficient producer of agricultural
products, but also desirable type of farm life. The
Master
Farmer and his wife were not only good farmers, but also good citizens and good
neighbors.
Sarah Sweigard Jones died June 3, 1959. On June 12. 1960.
Mr. Jones married Constance Marie Renken in St.
John's
Lutheran
Church, Stuttgart.
Mr.
Jones served the Almyra community as school board
director, Sunday school teacher. 4-H adult leader, scoutmaster
and
Farm Bureau representative. He was a member of the Almyra United Methodist Church.
In
addition to many years as a member of the Quorum Court of Arkansas County, he
served on the County Board of Education,
the
Equalization Board and tenant extension programs. A charter member of the
Arkansas Flying Farmers, Mr Jones soloed
two
days before his 50th birthday and held a private ticket until health denied
renewal. He served as president of AFF in 1948,
1949, 1955 and 1956.
He
retired from active farming and moved to Stuttgart in 1967. He was a Mason and
Rotarian.
Survivors
include his wife. Constance Renken Jones, Stuttgart:
one son. Kenneth Jones Sr., Hot Springs; one daughter,
Mrs.
Dorothy Jones Core, Almyra; one sister, Mrs. Harry
Stewart, Eldon, Mo.; nine grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
One
daughter, Madelene Jones Oliver, preceded him in
death.
Funeral
services were held October 21 at the Almyra United
Methodist Church by Reverand Gene Ratekin and Reverand Cagle E
Fair. Burial was in the Almyra Cemetery by Turpin Funeral Home.

Avery
Lincoln of Osage died Saturday, September 6 at a nursing home in Osage. He was
eighty-eight years old.
The
Lincoln family lived in the Lenox and Brooks vicinity until moving to Osage and
surrounding towns in 1942.
Survivors
include a son, Tom, Osage and a daughter, Mildred Stuvick of Nodaway. His wife, Francis, preceded him
in
death July 26. 1980.
Services
were held Tuesday, September 9 at the Osage United Methodist Church at 2 p.m.

Matthews, Maye Ellen Bender -
Maye Ellen Bender Matthews, daughter of Perry Martin Bender and Grace Van Winkle
Bender, was born June 7, 1898
near Maloy, Iowa. She died October 21, 1980 at the age of
82 years, 4 months, and 14 days.
On
June 14. 1916 she was united in marriage to Robert Lloyd Matthews, also of Maloy.
At
an early age she joined the Highland Church, Grant township, Ringgold county. Iowa,
later transferring her membership
to
the United Presbyterian Church in Clearfield. Iowa. When the Presbyterian Church disbanded, she
transferred her
membership
to the Clearfield United Methodist Church where she attended when able and
continued to be interested in the
church
and its activities.
Left
to cherish her memory are two sons, Kenneth and his wife Mildred of Clearfield, Carrol and his wife, Juanita of
Diagonal, a daughter, Roberta Maye Cook of Clearfield,
seven grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, one great great
grandchildren,
two sisters-in-law Margaret Jeanes Matthews of
Huxley, Iowa, and Lora Matthews Newburn of
Clearfield,
and
a number of cousins, nieces and nephews.
Preceding
her in death were her devoted husband, Robert, her father and mother, her
sister, Reva Bender Morey, and
son-in-law
George D. Cook.
Maye was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and especially enjoyed the many
clubs she belonged to.
Her
children and grandchildren were her pride and joy. She was a generous and
loving mother, always thinking of her
family
and others. She was called "Grandma" by many.
Services
were held at the United Methodist Church in Clearfield October 24 at 2 p.m.
with Pastor Kevin Hoffman
officiating.
Nancy Brown was the organist and Michelle Hoffman the vocalist.
Casket
hearers were LeRoy Beggs,
Dwight Matheny, Harvey Heimke. Bill Livingston,
Ronald Brown, and John Duey.
Interment
was in the Clearfield cemetery. Varner-Watson was in charge of arrangements.

Frances
Nagle, the daughter of John and Catherine O'Neil Nagle, was born July 18, 1885
near Lenox. She died at the
Lenox
Care Center October 24 at ninety-five years of age. She had been a resident of
the Care Center for twelve years.
Miss
Nagle was a lifelong resident of Lenox and Taylor County. She was the oldest
member of St. Patrick's Catholic
Church
in Lenox and was also a member
of the Ladies Guild.
Survivors
include four nieces, Alice Nagle, Ruth Nagle, Madeline Hartney,
and Esther Morrison, all of Canada; two
nephews,
Damian Nagle and George Nagle, also of Canada; and close friends, Mr. and Mrs.
Ray Cheese of Lenox, Mr. and
Mrs.
Erskine Blair of Lenox, Mr. and Mrs. Dean Leonard of Corning, and Antonia
Reimer of Corning.
The
funeral Mass was held Monday, October 27 at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic
Church with Father Timothy Fitzgerald
officiating.
Casket
bearers were Dean Leonard, Orville Williams, Jim Bennett, Raymond Miller, Mike
Cheese and Bill Cheese.
Wake
services were held Sunday. October 26 at 8 p.m.
Interment
was in the East Fairview Cemetery in Lenox.

eight years old.

will be in the West Fairview Cemetery.

Delia
Walker Pierce, the youngest and last surviving child of Henri and Louisa (Schafroth) Walter, was born
December
28, 1891 near Lenox. She died August 24 at the Lenox Care Center where she had
been
a
resident since June 1979. She was eighty-eight years, seven months and
twenty-six days old.
Delia
was united in marriage with W.W. "Bill" Walker February 2, 1915 at
Lenox.
Following
his death in 1948, she moved to Los Angeles. California.
She
was married to Joe Pierce on April 16, 1950. He preceded her in death in 1979
at which time Mrs. Pierce moved
back
to Lenox.
She
was a longtime member of the Lenox United Methodist Church and had also been a
member of the Salome Chapter
of
the Eastern Star in Lenox for over fifty years.
Survivors
include a son, Henry Walker and wife, Virginia of Greeley, Colorado; two
daughters, Wilma Strough of
Los
Angeles, and Mildred Cheese and husband Ray of Lenox; a step-daughter, Jo Ann
Winslow of Los Angeles, eight
grandchildren,
and fourteen great grandchildren.

William John -
William
John Preston, eldest son of Charles G. and Agnes Coulter Preston, was born
August 3, 1890 in Adams
County
on the Preston homestead. He died at the Lenox Care Center, October 26 at the
age of ninety years, two months
and
twenty-two days.
He
was united in marriage with Lennie M. Sturm at
Bedford January 22, 1913.
He
joined the Lenox Methodist Church April 10, 1925, where he attended as long as
his health permitted.
His
lifelong occupation was farming until he retired and moved to Lenox in 1950.
His greatest pleasure then was
working
in his garden.
Will
and Lennie moved to the Lenox Care Center in November
of 1978. They observed their sixty-seventh wedding
anniversary
in January of this year.
Preceding
him in death were two sisters, Mrs. Edith Boyer and Mrs. Cora Herbst; two brothers, Harry and George
and
two sons-in-law, Cecil Wilson and Herman Wenger.
Survivors
include his wife, Lennie, three daughters, Mrs Thelma Wenger of Des Moines, Mrs. Velda Wilson. Dorothy
Routh and husband Marvin, all of Lenox; one son, Clifford and wife, Elsie of Lenox,

J. Shannon of Sharpsburg died Monday, August 18 at the Corning Nursing Home
after suffering a stroke.
He was
born June 9, 1900 at New Market and was a welder in Taylor County for much of
his life.
Mr.
Shannon was united in marriage with Josephine Flaherty July 1, 1928 at Aurora,
Illinois.
Survivors
include a daughter, Patricia A. MacAlister of Des
Plaines, Illinois, a son, Gerald M. Shannon of Omaha, Nebraska;
two
brothers, Wincell Shannon of Harlingen. Texas and
Vernon Shannon of Benson, Arizona; a sister, Aneatha (Mrs.
Roy) Talkington of Spokane, Washington; seven
grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Services
were held Wednesday, August 20 at 10:00 a.m. at the Shum-Novinger Funeral Home
in Bedford with Reverend
Don
Fisher of the Sharpsburg-Lenox United Presbyterian Church officiating.
Interment
was in the Conway cemetery at Conway. Iowa.

Stoner,
Grace Doris -
Grace
Doris Stoner, daughter of Rueben and Lulu Jenks Stoner, was born November 29,
1901 on a farm in Taylor County,
Iowa
a few miles south of Lenox. She died September 24 at the Rosary Hospital in
Corning at the age of seventy-eight years,
nine
months and twenty-six days.
Grace
resided on the farm where her grandparents settled when they came to Iowa from
Illinois in 1883. She was a
thoughtful
and kind person.
Preceding
her in death were her father on March 10, 1920, a brother, Glen, on November 12, 1956 and her mother on
February
19, 1965.
Survivors
include two first cousins, Lester Stoner of El Cerrito. California and Mrs.
Betty Wells of Pasedena, California, as
well
as a number of other cousins.
Services
were held Saturday, September 27 at 1:30 p.m. at the Larkin-Bender Funeral Home
with the Reverend William C.
Trembly officiating. Marilyn Beck and Billie Jean Barker sang "Good Night, Good
Morning" and "Near To The Heart of God"
accompanied
by Norma Paymal.
Casket
bearers were Art Jones, Donald Beck, Randall Riley, LaRell Wilkinson, Alfred Lucas, and Randy Samo.
Interment
was in the East Fairview Cemetery at Lenox.
The
Larkin-Bender Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
