Akers, Eva May Kirby -
Mrs.
Chester (Eva) Akers, 76, died at Rosary Hospital Saturday night April 2.
Funeral services were Wednesday at the Christian Church with burial in
the
Gravity cemetery.
Survivors
include her husband; three sons, Harold of Gravity, Marvin of Leon and Melvin
of Benton; two daughters, Mrs. Al Hummill of Hawaii
and Mrs. Don Lewis of Clarinda; two brothers, Lawrence Kirby of Lenox and Guy
Kirby of Brighton, Colo.; eleven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
The
Akers home is on a farm south of Lenox.

services for Mrs Chester Akers, long-time resident of
the Lenox community, who passed away at the Corning (Rosary) Hospital on April
2, 1966, were held at the Lenox Christian Church on Wednesday, April 6th at
2:00 PM. with the Rev. David Shaeffer officiating.
Interment was at Gravity, Iowa.
Eva
May Kirby, the daughter of William Wesley Kirby and Anna Mary Cree was born
September 23, 1889 at Bingham, Nebraska,
in a sod hut and passed
away
at the Rosary hospital at Corning Saturday, April 2, 1966 at the age of 76
years, 6 mos., and 10 days.
While
she was in an early age the family moved to Iowa, and she received her
education in Page and Taylor counties. In her youth she united with the Gravity
Christian
Church.
She
was united in marriage to Chester A. Akers on Jan. 22, 1908 at her home place
near Gravity with an evening service. To
this union were born five
children:
Harold Akers of Gravity la.; Marvin Akers of, Leon, la.; Mrs,
Mildred Hummel, Honolulu, Hawaii; Mrs Arlene Lewis of
Clarinda, la.; and Melvin
Akers
of Benton; la. Her eleven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren, were
her pride and joy.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Earl and a sister Mary.
She
leaves to mourn her passing her husband, Chester; the children; two brothers,
Lawrence Kirby of Lenox, la. and Guy Kirby of Brighton, Colo., along
with
a host of friends and acquaintances.
The
Chester Akers family moved to Lenox, la. from Gravity in 1945, and it was then
that Mrs Akers became a member of the Christian
Women's Fellowship
of
the Lenox Christian Church, whose Christian associations she enjoyed so much.
Mr.
and Mrs. Akers celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at their farm home
just south of Lenox in 1958.
Mrs.
Akers was of a quiet and kindly disposition, loving and serving her Lord and
family in an unobtrusive manner, content just to serve those whom she
loved.
She will be greatly missed by all who knew her friendly ways.

Bolte, Grover C -
Grover
C. Bolte, 88, of 3411 5th Avenue, Council Bluffs died
Saturday morning, April 23, 1966 after a short illness. He was a retired body
and fender
man
and had lived in Council Bluffs since 1940.
He
was born at Manning, Iowa, the son of Wm. O Bolte.
The family lived for several years in the Lenox vicinity. Grover was married
here to Rose Rogers. He was a member of
the Lenox Masonic Lodge, and of the Westminster United Presbyterian Church of
Council Bluffs, having served as both deacon and elder of that church.
He
and his wife were Skippers of the Mariners of the Southwest Presbytery.
Survivors
include his wife; a son, Roger, at home; daughter, Mrs. Joan John of Clarinda;
a granddaughter living with Mr. and Mrs. Bolte, Sally
Sue John; one brother, Roy of Lenox; two sisters, Mrs. John Krohmer and Mrs. Tom Lockhart, both of Lenox.
The
funeral was Tuesday, April 26, at the church where he was a member, the Rev.
John Gill officiating. Interment was in Cedar Lawn Cemetery at Council Bluffs.

Casey, Melvin Albert -
Melvin
Albert Casey, son of L. L. and Theresa Robinson Casey, was born March 20, 1893,
at Prescott, and passed away at the Greater Community Hospital at Creston on
April 3, 1966. On January 5, 1916, he married Ada Moser, who survives.
Also
surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Clark (Marie) Means of Villisca and Mrs. Dart
(Violet) King of Florissant, Missouri; a son, Ray A. Casey of Kent; seven
grandchildren, Larry, Duane and Stephen Casey, Stanley and Dennis Means, Susan
and Carla King; two sisters, Mrs. Clyde (Clara) Riley of Creston, and Mrs. P.
J. (Lillian) Ryan of Omaha, Nebraska; a brother, Howard E. Casey of Terre
Haute, Indiana; and a host of other relatives. His parents and a
daughter-in-law
preceded
him in death.
He
was a loving husband, father and grandfather, a wonderful friend, and a helpful
neighbor, and will be missed by all who knew him.
He
spent his entire lifetime farming in the Stringtown community until 1962 when he moved to 517 New York Avenue in Creston.
He
was a member of the Salem Church of the Brethren.
Funeral
services were held at the Keating Chapel on April 5, 1966, with interment at
the Walnut Grove cemetery in Corning.
Pall
bearers were Leonard Brotherton, John Craft, Rex
Pierce, Allen Pine, Alvy Reynolds and Fred Stillinger.

Chadwick, Fred -
Memorial
services were held at Bender's Funeral home Friday, April 22, at 10 a m, for
Fred Chadwick. Rev. David Shaeffer of the Lenox
Christian Church officiated with interment in Fairview Cemetery. Mr Chadwick passed away April 26.
The
son of Adam and Eliza Chadwick, he was born in Prescott, Iowa, Oct. 11, 1882.
He received his schooling in Prescott, and was married in 1906. His wife, Jean,
died Nov. 21, 1957.
They
were parents of four children, one son and one daughter dying in infancy. Two
daughters survive: Ethel Reed, Eugene, Ore.; and Betty Jones of Lenox with whom
he made his home until his death. There are five grandchildren and three great
grandchildren; also a brother, Ray Chadwick of Nevada, Iowa.
Mr.
Chadwick had lived on a farm his entire life, first near Prescott, then moving
to the Lenox vicinity 25 years ago. He united with the Prescott Christian
Church in 1927, transferring his membership to the Lenox Christian Church where
he served as an elder for many years, until poor health no longer permitted
this activity.
Bearers
at the funeral were Bob Reynolds, Raymond Dill, Lloyd Hamblin, Shorty Rogers,
George Reynolds and Don Miller.

Funeral
services were held in Alhambra, Calif., Feb 16 for a former resident of Lenox, Mrs Coma (Haynes) Cullen, 95. She was the aunt of Mrs Thelma
Larimer and Randall Haynes. One sister,
Viola, survives.

George A. -
George
A. Donaldson, 71, of Denton, Mont., died Mar. 30 after a long illness. He was
born Feb. 27, 1895, in Iowa, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Donaldson.
He
married Mae Crouch Dec. 29, 1921 in Moorhead, Minn. He farmed at Denton except
for the time he served in World War I.
Surviving
are the widow; a son, Duane, of Denton, two daughters; a brother John of
Denton; a sister, Mrs. Nellie Burns of Sand Point, Idaho and 8 grandchildren.
The
funeral and burial were April 2 in Lewistown, Mont.
Mr.
Donaldson was a brother-in-law of Wes Crouch and a cousin of the Donaldsons here.

Freshour, Nate -
Mrs Roy Martin received word of the death of her
brother, Nate Freshour, Friday Feb.11. He had undergone surgery for gall
stones. He is survived by 2 sons and 2
daughters, 3 brothers, and one sister. He was born in Adams county, later moving to Minnesota and his last few
years were spent in Pittsburg, Calif. Services were Tuesday Feb 15 at Pittsburg and burial there. Mrs Martin did not
attend the funeral on account of ill health.

Memorial
services for Mrs Julia Hance were held at the Bender Funeral Home Tuesday, April 19, 2 p. m. with Rev. David
A. Shaeffer, minister of the Lenox
Christian
church officiating.
Julia
H Kirkman was born March 21, 1878 in a small mining
community near Peoria, Ill., and passed away on Saturday, April 16, 1966 at
Creston, la.
She
came to Iowa with her parents while a young girl and settled on a farm near
Sharpsburg, la.
Her
confession of faith was in the Blue Grover Church at a youthful age.
Julia Kirkman was united in marriage with James W Hance on August 12, 1902. To this union a daughter, Marscel Cheryl was born. Mrs Hance was preceded
in
death by her husband who passed away in November, 1940.
Mrs Hance is survived by her daughter, now Mrs Marscel Swanson of Creston,
and her husband; one brother, 6 nieces and one nephew.
Some
10 years ago Mrs Hance moved from the Lenox community to Creston where she resided until the time of
her death.
Mrs Hance's family and friends remember her as one who
loved the simple virtues of life and found much courage in them for her daily
living.
Bearers
were Lonnie Walter, Bill Bennison, Glen Vogel, Harold
Riley, Wayne McFee and Kenneth McFee.
Rolland
Buxton was soloist and Norma Paymal accompanist. Interment was in the Lenox Fairview cemetery.

Mabel Clara Underwood -
Mrs Charles Knott, 72, of Sharpsburg died at Rosary Hospital Thursday, March 31.
The funeral was at the Methodist Church in Sharpsburg, with
Rev.
James Ferris and Rev. E. S. Tschetter, officiating.
Burial was in the Lenox cemetery.
Mabel
Clare Underwood, daughter of Clarence and Carrie Underwood, was born June 5,
1893 on a farm hear Conway. She passed away March 31, 1966 at the age of 72
years, 9 months and 26 days. She had been in poor health for some time but
became worse in the last few weeks.
Her
entire life was spent in Taylor County. On Sept, 6, 1912, she was married to
Charles W Knott. They were parents of three children, Carroll W. of Sterling,
Colo., Leonard C. of Sharpsburg, and Mrs Ellen C. Wehrhan of Lincoln; Nebr.
She
was a member of the Methodist Church at Sharpsburg and of the Happy Hour Club
until her health forced her to drop out. Last September she and her husband
celebrated their fifty-third wedding anniversary.
In
addition to her husband and children, she leaves six grandchildren, seven great
grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Gladys Elder of Lenox and Mrs Myrna Bush of Omaha, Nebr.; many other relatives and friends.

Potts, Edna Elizabeth Hewitt -
Mrs Robert D Potts, 74, a native of Lenox, died at Creston Feb 16 after a
short illness. She had lived in Creston since 1936. The
funeral was at Creston Feb. 18 with burial in the Lenox cemetery.
Edna Elizabeth Hewitt was born at Lenox May 5, 1891,
the daughter of Clement D and Mary U Deaver Hewitt.
She was married here in 1912 to Robert
D Potts.
She is survived by her husband; two sons, Gerald W
Potts and Robert G Potts, both of Creston, three brothers C D Hewitt
of Conway, Glenn Hewitt
of
Omaha, and Paul Hewitt of Portage, Wisc.; two
sisters, Mrs Grace Potts of Stuart and Mrs Hazel Porter of Erie, Pa.
Mrs Potts was an active member of the Presbyterian church in Creston and had taught
in the Sunday school for many years.

Mrs.
Mattie Reed, 78, died Monday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lowell
Shum in Iowa Falls. The body is at Bender Funeral Home. The
funeral
will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Benders.
Mrs.
Reed was a resident of Lenox, but had been with her daughter this winter while
she had been ill.
Surviving
besides Mrs. Shum are a stepdaughter, Mrs. Ruth Reeder of Pomeroy and a
stepson, Cecil Reed of Bedford; also three grandchildren.
Her husband, Charles Reed died several
years ago.

Schafroth, Joseph Bell -
Funeral
services were at the Methodist church in Lenox Saturday, Feb 12, for Joe Schafroth, 80, who died at Corning Wednesday. The Rev
Albert
Clements
officiated at the service. Interment was in the Lenox cemetery.
Joseph
Bell Schafroth, the son of Levi and Mary Rickenbaugh Schafroth, was born
Feb 18, 1885 near the present site of the Mercer Center Methodist
Church.
He died about noon on Feb 9 in Corning, la., at the age of 80 years, 11 months
and 21 days. All his schooling was at the Mercer Center school.
He
married Grace E. Hill on Feb 25, 1914. To this union a son, Owen Ray, and two
daughters, Lucille E. and Mynne Mae were born. He
lived all lug life in the Lenox and Corning area and made his livelihood at
farming.
He
was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Grace in 1961, 3
brothers, Fred and John, and Ed who died in infancy; 4 sisters, Emma, Louise,
Rose
and, Lena.
Since
Mrs. Schafroth's death in 1961 he has made his home
in Corning. He has been a member of the Lenox Methodist church for nearly 41
years.
Those
left to cherish his memory are his son Owen of Corning, his daughters, Mrs James Reynolds of Des Moines, Mrs Rodney Poindexter of Denver, Colo., his brother William of Greenfield and
George of Corning, his sisters Mrs Otto Hansen of
Prescott, Mrs Charles Miller of Corning, Mrs Kate Miller of Lenox, Mrs
William Siegenhalter of Akron, Ohio, Mrs Otto Thornton of Brownsville, Ore, 9 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren,
many nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
He
was a wonderful father and grandfather and will be greatly missed by his loved
ones.

Scott, 65, of Omaha, son of Mrs Lillie Scott of
Lenox, died in a hospital there April 9. He is survived by his wife, daughter,

Ray was a former resident of this community.

C. Scott of Grand Island, Nebr., passed away Apr. 9, 1966 after four months of
illness. Services were at Roeder Mortuary April 12, the Rev. Herbert
Lilly,
pastor of First Church of the Nazarene officiating. Burial was in Omaha.
Mr.
Scott was born March 17, 1901, and spent his early childhood on the farm near
Lenox. He was baptized and united with the Methodist Church at the age of 14.
He
moved to Grand Island, Nebr. in 1919. Dec. 4, 1925 he was married there to
Irene Truckenmiller. After moving to Omaha in 1945,
Mr. Scott was employed by the Milder Oil Co. for 18 years.
Survivors
include his widow, Irene; a daughter, Mrs. Norma Bradley of Council Bluffs;, a
son, LeRoy of Omaha; his mother, Mrs. Lillian Scott
of Lenox; one sister, Mrs. Ruth Dey Ermand of Grand Island; 3 grandchildren and many friends.
He
was preceded in death by his father, James and a brother Ralph.

Thomas W.
Stapleton, 58, of Peoria, Ill., died there Thursday, Feb 24, He had been in ill
health for 6 months, and in the hospital only since Feb 22.
He
was born at Lenox Nov 22, 1907, and married Dorothy Hahn in Peoria, July 22,
1929. He had lived in that area 30 years and had been a self-employed tree
trimmer
and landscaper for 15 years. He was a member of St Boniface Catholic Church.
Surviving
are his wife, three daughters, three sons; also a brother, Walter Stapleton of Lenox; two
sisters, Mrs Alice Wynn of Corning and Mrs Martra
Sprague
of Lenox; and 14 grandchildren. Two brothers preceded him in death.
The
funeral was Monday morning in Peoria with burial there.
Mr and Mrs Walter Stapleton and Mrs Martha Sprague attended from here, leaving Thursday for Peoria.
