Chenowith,
Joseph Fletcher –
Joe Chenowith, 31, of Des Moines died at the Broadlawn hospital in Des Moines, Tuesday, May 7 at 12:15
p.m. following an operation. He was the
son of Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Chenowtih of Lenox, and a nephew
of Mrs. J. C. Pearson, also of Lenox.
Funeral
services will be held today, Thursday, at the Federated Church, Des
Moines. George Cheese and Harry Cheese
drove to Des Moines with Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Chenowith Tuesday.

Joseph Fletcher -
Joseph
Fletcher Chenowith was the son of Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Chenowich, who live northeast of Lenox. He was born April
24, 1904, at St. Louis, Mo., and died May 7, 1935, at the age of 31 years, and
13 days. His death came suddenly, following an operation.
He united
with the Baptist church at the age of 15 at Anad,
Mont., and at the time of his death he was a member of the First Federated
church in Des
Moines. He was married, August 5, 1926, to Sybil C. Michael of Des Moines and to them
was born one son, Kenneth, 6 years old.
He is
survived by his wife and son and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Chenoweth. One
brother, Knelon, died July 21, 1912.
Joe was of a
friendly and cheerful disposition and was well liked by his fellow workmen who
considered him a man of character, honesty and truthfulness.
He was a
kind and loving husband, a considerate father and a dutiful son.
Funeral
services were held Thursday, May 9, at 2 o'clock, at the Federated church,
conducted by his pastor, Rev. Rash. Songs that were used were "The Old
Rugged Cross", "Dose Jesus Care" and "When I Shall See Him
Face to Face", the last of which he hummed a
great deal during his last illness. Burial was made in the McDivett cemetery at Des Moines.

Ella Zan McNeill was born May 4, 1856 in Somerset county, Pennsylvania and departed this life April 13, 1935
at the age of 78 years, 11 months and 9 days.
When 17 years of age she came with her parents to Onawa, la.
In 1881 she
was married to James M. Draney. To them were born three daughters, Katherine, Sada and Pearl. In July 1898 the Draney family
came to Lenox
and Mrs. Draney has made her home in Lenox since then. In 1906 Mr. Draney
passed away and in 1919 her eldest daughter, Katherine Draney Davidson, was
taken in death,
When 15
years of age she joined the Baptist church in Somerset county,
Penn. Upon coming to Lenox she united with the Christian church. While health
permitted she enjoyed the fellowship with the Eastern Star and M. F. C. club.
She is
survived by her two daughters, Mrs. Sada Farley of
Chicago and Mrs. Pearl Killion of Lenox—two sisters,
Mrs. Emma Hurst of Macy, Nebr., and
Mrs.
Katherine Bush of Ponka, Alberta Canada—two brothers,
Bruce McNeill of Sioux City, la., and Will McNeill of
Macy, Nebraska.
Mrs. Draney
was a kind, loving mother, a good neighbor and a true friend. She was known for
her many kind motherly deeds, often spoken of and to as
mother Draney, by the young people. Those who knew her best loved her most. Her
pleasant manner won her countless friends. She was a good Christian woman. She
was ready and anxious to meet her Savior. Only a short time before her going
she said she had no fear of death She told her
daughter
that Jesus was
going down the valley of the shadows of death with her. '
Funeral
services were held on Tuesday afternoon at the Arnold Funeral home at 2:30 p.
m., conducted by Rev. I. G. Randels of the Christian
church.
Interment
was in the Lenox cemetery.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, April 15, at 2
o'clock at the United Presbyterian church for Mrs. Emma Eckles.
The services were conducted by the Rev. W. A. Thompson. Burial was made in the Stringtown cemetery.
Emma Semmons, daughter of Gilbert
and Eleanor Semmons, was born Nov. 18, 1863, in
Janesville, Ohio, and passed away at her home in Lenox, Iowa, April 13, 1935,
at the age of 71 years, 4 months and 25 days.
While she was a child her parents moved to Iowa and settled
on a farm near Lenox where she lived until her marriage to Lafayette Eckles, October 24,
1878. To them were born Everett, William Floyd, Walter Guy,
Grace Elizabeth, Mrs. Laura Symonds of Kent, Mrs. Myrtle Herbst of Lenox and Mrs. Dorothy
Conwell of Allerton, Iowa.
Mrs. Eckles united with the
Presbyterian church in Lenox in 1911, being received
by letter from the Baptist church at Prescott, Iowa.
Her husband, three sons and
a daughter preceeded her in death, Mr. Eckles having departed this life March 6, 1907. She is survived by her daughters,
Laura, Myrtle and Dorothy, eleven grandchildren, 13 great
grandchildren, two sisters, Mattie Catlett of Millard, Nebr., and Lizzie Kane
of Corning, Iowa.

Dale Ginn, 12, son of Mr. and Mrs. Horace Ginn who live 2 miles north of Gravity, was killed Sunday afternoon when a shotgun
in the hands of his
brother Thomas, 16, accidentally was discharged. The shot struck Dale in the stomach.
The boys had
been hunting ground squirrels and were returning to the house, unloading the
gun as they walked along. It is reported that Mr. and Mrs Ginn witnessed the tragedy.

The
community was shocked Sunday when it was learned that Mrs. J. G. Ginn had passed away at her home east of town that day
after a very brief illness.
Funeral
services were held at the Barber Funeral home in Lenox Tuesday afternoon, May
7, and were conducted by the Rev. Arthur Mortenson of
Villisca, a former Lenox pastor. Interment was made in the cemetery at Gravity.
Happy
Frances Norris was born at Yates City, Illinois, July 6, 1885, and was the
second child of Frank and Nellie Norris. She passed away at her home Sunday,
May 5, at the age of 49 years, 9 months and 29 days.
In the early
years of her life she professed her faith in Jesus uniting with the Calvary
Methodist church, later transferring her letter to the First Presbyterian
church of Lenox.
She was
united in marriage August 27, 1903, with James G. Ginn and to them were born Frances Mildred Ginn and Ralph
A. Ginn.
Mrs. Ginn will be greatly missed by her family, friends and
neighbors as she had an unusually cheerful disposition, in accordance with her
name of Happy.
She is
survived by her loving husband and children, Mrs. Roy Schafer and husband of Lenox,
Ralph Ginn and wife of Tarkio, Mo., her mother, Mrs.
Nellie
Norris of
Gravity and four sisters, Mrs. Pearl Hollembaeck of
Sheridan, Wyo., Mrs. Mary Davis of Gravity, Iowa, Mrs. Leona Wallas of Gravity, Miss Evadine
Norris of Mt. Clemmens, Mich., and one
brother, John Norris of Crescent City, Calif. There are also five
grandchildren.
Mrs. Ginn had been in declining health for more than a year but
the end came suddenly and unexpectedly as her health had seemed to be
improving.

Thomas Henry
Gray, who was born April 21, 1878, in Taylor county, Iowa, near Lenox, died May
30, 1935, at his home 3314 West 66th Place, Chicago Ill.
He was a son
of the late, John and Mary Gray and husband of Jessie Watson.
He was also
the stepfather of Jessie Lukes, grandfather of Luella
Mae and Yvone Joan. Mr. Gray is survived by two brothers, Jesse of Albambra,
Calif., and John of Corning, Iowa and two sisters, Alice of Boise, Idaho, and
Florence of Los Angeles, Calif.
Mr Gray was
employed by the Milwaukee Railroad company where he had worked for 25 years.
Mr. Gray
died following a heart attack and was ill only five days.

Mrs. Sarah
Green, 87, one of the pioneer settlers of this community, died Sunday morning
at her home here. She had not been well for a long time, but
her heart
failure caused her sudden departure. Funeral services were held Wednesday
afternoon in the Methodist church.

Sarah Beaty, the daughter of Isaac R. and Mahala Beaty, was born near Warren, Lee County Iowa, on July
29th, 1847 and died May 26th, 1935, at the age of 87 years, 9 months and 27
days. She was one of eight children of whom only two survive her—a brother,
Edward C. Beaty of Keokuk, Iowa, and a
sister,
Mary C. Doherty of Kansas City, Missouri.
On March
1st, 1866, she was married to John L. Green of the same county. They remained
there the first year, then on March 1st, 1868, they came west
locating in
Taylor county, Iowa, southeast of where the town of Conway now is, and have
lived in Taylor county ever since, excepting two winters spent in
Southern
California.
They moved to
the old Homestead farm in 1880, which is just south of where Clearfield now is
and at that time was a raw prairie. When Clearfield was
started,
her husband located the depot, the four churches, and the first school, just
south of the present one and part of its playground yet. This was then
the second
Clearfield postoffice in the United States.
To them were
born two children, Laura and Ralph, who have made the home for her after the
death of her husband, June 10th, 1898.
When an
infant a great nephew, Harry E. Green, son of H. B. and Ellen Green,
was left motherless; she gave him a home and motherly care, educating him here and at Iowa State College at Ames, a four year course in Industrial Science to
Bachelor of Science.
At the age
of 16 she joined the Baptist Church, and when the Baptist Church was organized
here, she transferred her membership here and she has always stood for right
living, but her health would not permit her to attend church for years.
She was a
faithful wife and loving mother, a loyal neighbor and friend and will be
greatly missed by her nieces and nephews and a host of friends as well as by
her immediate family.

Mrs. Dora
Haas, 53, wife of Theodore J. Haas, a former Lenox man, died at her home in
Billings, Mont., May 3, following an illness of three weeks, due to
heart trouble.
Funeral
services were held Sunday, May 5, and burial was made at Billings.
Mrs. Haas
never lived around Lenox as she was married to Mr. Haas after he left here some
twenty years ago. She has visited here several times, the last
time being about
a year and a half ago at the Frank Haas home.
Mrs. Haas is
survived only by her husband, three sisters and two brothers.

Mrs. Ella
Morrell Herren died at the home of her daughter in
Berkeley, Calif., May 4, following a heart attack. She was ill only a few
hours. Mrs. Herren
will be
remembered by some of the older residents of the community as she was the
daughter of a former Lenox grocer who lived here about forty years ago. He was a member of the firm of Humphrey &
Morrell.

Mrs. A. F. Irons
of Alpha, N. Dak., died recently from blood
poisoning, according to a clipping received by friends here this week. Mrs.
Irons developed the infection from a thorn in her finger and spent two weeks
in a hospital
preceding her death.
Funeral
services were held at Beach, N. Dak., and were
largely attended as Mrs. Irons was well known throughout the county in which
she had lived
for many years.
Mrs. Irons
was born in Sharpsburg, Iowa, October 15, 1881, and was the daughter of Charles
and Letty Boyden. She spent her early childhood in
Sharpsburg and in 1901 was married to Albert F. Irons, the son of Jacob and
Elizabeth Irons. To them were born six children, John Irons of Alpha, N. Dak., Mrs. Erma Schran of
California; Nellie Irons of Alpha, Mrs. Bernice Langberg of California; Lillian and Warren Irons of Alpha.
Mr. and Mrs.
Irons moved to North Dakota in 1906 and settled on a farm near Alpha which has
been their home ever since.
Besides her
immediate family she is survived by her father and stepmother, three sisters,
three half brothers, two half sisters and a grandson.

Mrs. Bertha Lyddon was born December 14, 1877, in Wapello county, Iowa. While still a small child she came with her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Gibson, to a farm in Taylor county,
six miles west of Lenox. Her childhood was spent on this farm. At the
age of 14 she came to Lenox where, in young womanhood, she made a profession of
her faith and united with the Presbyterian church of Lenox. The church found in
her a ready and willing worker.
She was
graduated from the Lenox high school. That she might further fit herself to
teach in the public schools, she attended the Corning academy and the State
Teachers college. Before her marriage, Mrs. Lyddon taught in the country school and, for four years, in the Lenox public school.
She was
married, June 12, 1907 to Mr. George Lyddon. They had
no children.
In 1928 Mr.
and Mrs. Lyddon moved to Indianola, Iowa. Mrs. Lyddon was
taken ill while visiting her sister, Mrs. A. L. Mitchell at Oceanside, Calif.,
and was in the hospital for some time before her death on April 19, 1935.
Brief
funeral services were held in Oceanside, Calif., after which the body was
brought to Lenox where services were held at the Presbyterian church, on
Wednesday, April 24, conducted by the Rev. W. A. Thompson. Burial was made in Fairview cemetery at Lenox.
Mrs. Lyddon is survived by her husband, three sisters, Mrs. A.
L. Mitchell of Oceanside, Calif., Mrs. Wilson of Massena, Iowa, Mrs. Wilmarth of Corning,,
la., and one brother, the Rev. Harry Gibson of Indianola, la.

Henry Thornton
Swope, eldest son of Woodson and Mary Swope, was born February 3rd 1854, in Sulphur Springs, Henry county,
Indiana, and passed
away at his home
in Clearfield, Iowa, April 22nd, 1935 at the age of 81 years, 2 months and 19
days. The family moved to near Bethany, Mo., when he was about nine years old,
later moving to Kinsley county, Kansas. In 1871 he
came to Adams county, Iowa, and after a short stay, returned to Kansas, where
he resided until 1874, when he came to Ringgold county, Iowa. On December 17th,
1885 he was married to Mary Swope of Clearfield, and here they have
resided ever since. To this union were born five children, three sons, Granville,
Orville and David dying in infancy. His wife, one son, Woodson L., and one
daughter
Lena Steward; also the son-n-law, F. P. Steward, two grand children; one
brother, W. A. Swope of Zenda, Kansas; nieces,
nephews, other relatives
and many
friends survive. For several years Mr. Swope was in the harness business in
Clearfield, then for a time in the produce business, and in January,
1898 he
became postmaster continuing in that capacity for thirteen and a half years. In
July of 1911 he again went into the Produce business, continuing
until ill health
caused him to retire four years ago.
He was a
charter member of the Clearfield Church of Christ, was for years Bible school
superintendent and Bible class teacher. He was a zealous Christian, a loving husband and father, a loyal friend
and neighbor, always
doing good
wherever his hand found it to do. He has filled various positions of trust and
honor in the town, especially in its earlier days. For fifty years he was a
member of the Masonic Order.
Funeral
services were held in the Church of Christ Wednesday afternoon, April 24th, pastor Philip Nystrand officiating,
assisted by the Rev. H. B. Hutchman of the United
Presbyterian church. Singing was by a mixed
sextette. Interment was in Clearfield
cemetery. The funeral was conducted with the ritualistic services of the
Masonic Order at church and later at
the cemetery,
Mr. Clyde Stanley of Beaconsfield giving the address and having charge of the
impressive services, both at church and cemetery.

Charles R.
Thompson who lived southeast of Lenox, died at his home Wednesday morning after
an illness of several months. He was about sixty
rears old. He had
lived in this neighborhood about 18 years.
Funeral
services will be held in Lenox but the date and time has not been set at this
time.

Thompson,
Charles R. -
Charles R.
Thompson was born Dec. 23, 1869, in Boone county,
Iowa. His parents both died while he was a small child and he went to live with
his
aunt and uncle,
Mr. and Mrs. Andriville Lee, on a farm near Ogden,
Iowa, where he resided until he was 21 years of age. He came to the vicinity of
Lenox in 1895, later going to Des Moines where he resided until 1908.
He was
married to Lydia Bennett May 19, 1908, at Atchison, Kans., at the home of her
brother, A. A. Bennett. They lived in Creston until 1918, where
he was
employed as a traveling salesman for the C. L. Percival company of Des Moines.
Mr. and Mrs.
Thompson moved to their home 4½ miles southeast of Lenox in Feb. 1918. Mr.
Thompson was taken ill in July 1934 and went to the Methodist hospital in St.
Joseph, Mo., where he spent a month. He
did not recover from this illness and passed away May 8, 1935.
Mr. Thompson
was held in high esteem by all who knew him. He joined the Methodist church in
Creston, later transferring his membership to the Lenox church.
He was
preceded in death by one sister, Mrs. Effie Ellis. Besides his wife he is survived by a nephew,
Dean Ellis, who made his home with them since he was three years old. He is also
survived by two nieces, three nephews and a number of other relatives.
Funeral
services were held at the Lenox Methodist church, Saturday, May 11, conducted
by the Rev. F. L. Shepherd. Music was furnished by Mrs. W. H.
Madden and
Mrs. J. H. Barber who were accompanied by Mrs. A. H. Peacock. Burial was made
in the Lenox cemetery.

John R.
Thompson, former Lenox resident, died Wednesday morning at the home of his son
Lloyd near Clearfield. He was 84 years old.
Funeral
services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Arnold Funeral home
in Lenox and will be in charge of the Masonic fraternity of which Mr. Thompson
was long a member. Rev. Hutchman of Clearfield will
preach the service.

John R.
Thompson was born, Dec. 25, 1850, at Kalona, Washington county,
Iowa, and died at the home of his son Lloyd near Clearfield, May 1, 1935. Mr.
Thompson moved to Adams county where he lived on a
farm for 15 years. He then moved to Lenox, 38 years ago and went into the Mill
business for several years.
His wife and
two sons preceded him in death. He is survived by three children, Mrs. Daisy Howes of Blockton, Ola of Klemme, lowa and Lloyd of Clearfield;
8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Mr. Thompson
was a member of the Masonic lodge. Funeral services were held at the Arnold
Funeral home in Lenox, Friday, May 3 and were conducted by the Rev. W. A Thompson. Burial was made n the Lenox cemetery and ser~
vices at the
grave were conducted by the Masonic fraternity.

T. T. Young of
Sharpsburg was taken to the hospital in St. Joseph, Mo., Monday of last week
and passed away there, Friday, May 31, at the age of 73 years. Funeral services
were held at the Presbyterian church in Sharpsburg,
Sunday, June 2, at 2 o’clock, conducted by the Rev. A. S. Hutchinson. Burial was made in the Lenox cemetery.
T. T. Young
was born in Shelbyville, July 17, 1861 and died May 31, 1935 at the age of 73
years 10 months and 17 days.
With his
parents he moved to El Dorado Springs, Mo. when 14 years old. He was married to Senia Jane Elden, October 25, 1880, and lived near El
Dorado Spring until 1919 when he moved to near Sharpsburg, Iowa.
He is
survived by his wife, two sons, F. H. of Corning, la.,
and W. E. of Lenox, la., three daughters Mrs. Roxey Elliston,
Van Alstine, Texas, Mrs. Bertha Costin,
Sharpsburg,, and Mrs. Tura Williams, Lenox. One son Glenn, preceded him in death, last April.
He is also
survived by his mother aged 95, of Garwood, Tex., two brothers, P. P. Young of
Bartlesville, Okla., and J. L. Young of Garwood Texas, and one sister, Mrs.
Minnie Boyer, Nowata, Okla., nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Mr. Young
united with the Christian church at the age of 35.
