Booth, Edward -

Edward Booth, born at Montalla Nov. 6, 1870, died at his home here [Sharpsburg] on Nov. 17, 1936, aged 66 years and 10 days. He came here with his parents, David and Ada Booth, in 1878 and located on the farm three fourths of a mile south of town, where has lived with his brother Elwood

since the death of their mother in 1923. His father and brother died some years ago. Funeral services were held at the M. E. church on Thursday at 2 o'clock. The services were conducted by the Rev. Wall and Rev. Hutchinson, pastor of the Presbyterian church. Burial was made in the Conway cemetery.

Cochran, Josie Pearl -

Josie Pearl Cochran was born June 16, 1889 at Atwood, Kansas and died at the St. Francis hospital, Maryville, Mo., on Nov. 15, 1936, at the age of 47 years, 4

months and 29 days. She came to Iowa with her parents in 1901 where she spent the remainder of her life.

 

In 1908 she was married to Harry Cochran. Four children were born, Floyd and Floy dying in infancy.  She is survived by her husband and two children, Marvin and Mary, both at home. Also her aged mother, four sisters and three brothers, Lena, Millie, Harmon and Frank of Malta Montana, Bonam of Spokane, Wash., Myrta of Casey, Iowa, Bessie of Maryville, Mo., besides other relatives and friends.

 

She was a kind and loving wife and mother, always ready to help others in time of need.

 

Funeral services were held 1:30 on November 16, at the Clearfield Methodist church, the pastor, the Rev. W. C. Henn, officiating.

 

Pallbearers were neighbors of the present and former residences. Beautiful

flowers graced the altar. Interment was made at Grove Center cemetery, where rest the bodies of her children, and other relatives.

Ethington, Lou Nella Deaver -

Funeral services for Mrs. H. A. Ethington were held Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 2, at the Methodist church in charge of the Rev. Thomas Kelly. Burial was

made in the Lenox cemetery.

Obituary

Lou Nella Deaver, daughter of Jonah and Lovina Deaver, was born on a farm near Lenox, Iowa, April 10, 1875, and died at the Iowa Methodist hospital in

Des Moines, Iowa, November 30, 1936, at the age of 61 years, 7 months and 20 days.

 

On November 27, 1900 she was married to H.A. Ethington, who died four years ago. One daughter, Hilda, was born to them, who survives. Mrs. Ethington is also survived by one sister and one brother, Mrs. Nancy Godden of Corydon, Iowa, and  A. Deaver of Amity, Oregon.

 

Mrs. Ethington's girlhood days were spent in and around Lenox and Clearfield.

She was a  life-long Methodist and at the time of her death held her member-ship in the Trinity Methodist church in Des Moines, where the family has

resided for the past eighteen years.

 

Mrs. Ethington was also a member of the Royal Neighbors in Lenox.

Griffen, Elizabeth Taylor -

Mrs. Elizabeth Taylor-Griffen, a native of Ireland, but of English and Welsh descent, who had lived in Sioux City 20 years died Tuesday morning at her

home at 3800 6th Ave. at the age of 80 years. She had been ill for nearly a year.

 

She was born in Dublin June 19, 1856 where she lived on her native isle until she was about 21 years old, when she came to the United States.

 

She was married to Daniel Griffin at Pierce, in Woodburry county, in 1884, and had lived in this same county ever since. Her husband and companion died in 1918.

 

She leaves to mourn her going, one son D. L. Griffen of Sioux City; two daughters, Mrs. Ethel Whitmere of Sioux City and Miss Alice Heaton of Clearfield, four sisters, Mrs. Janet Roome of New York, and Misses Emily, Phoebe and Salina of Dublin, and five grandchildren.

 

Mrs. Griffen was a member of the Grace Methodist Episcopal church of Sioux City.

 

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon from the Westcott - Doughty. Chandler chapel by the Rev. C. H. Kamphoofner.  Interment was in the Graceland Park cemetery.

Madden, Leonora Bliss –

Funeral services for Mrs. Leonora Madden were held Monday afternoon, Nov. 23, at the Methodist church in Lenox, conducted by the Rev. Thomas Kelly. Burial was made in the Lenox cemetery.

Obituary

Leonora Bliss was born in Green county, Pa., on July 28, 1846 and passed away in Creston, Iowa, on November 21, 1936, at the age of 90 years, 3 months and 24 days.

 

On November 15, 1866 she was married to John Madden, who preceded her in death on September 24, 1918. Eight children were born of whom two have

died, a daughter dying in infancy and Mrs. Katherine Essley, who died April 24, 1920.

 

Mrs. Madden is survived by four daughters and two sons, Mrs. Wm. Borland of Creston, Mrs. Ollie Estel of Falls City, Nebr., Mrs. Laura McClintock of Denver, Colo., Mrs. Clara Cresswell and Will, both of Lenox, and Walter of Omaha, Nebr. She also leaves one brother, Edward Bliss of Diagonal, Iowa, as well as 13 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.

 

When she was ten years of age, Mrs. Madden came to Iowa with her parents, living for a while in Jefferson county. Later she moved to Union county and

in 1875 she moved into the town of Lenox, making that place her home until the time of her death.

 

Mrs. Madden was a member of the Methodist church of Lenox. Four weeks ago she went to Creston to visit and while there she was taken ill.

Manroe, Frances Josephine Gehr -

Mrs. John W. Manroe died at the home of her daughter, Clara Manroe, in Des Moines Friday, November 20, at the age of 78 years. Funeral services were

held at St. Patrick's church in Lenox, Nov. 23, conducted by the Rev. Father McStay. Burial was made in Fairview cemetery.

Obituary

Frances Josephine Gehr, daughter of John and Mary Gehr, was born in Joliet, Ill., March 16, 1858, and passed away at the home of her daughter, Clara

Manroe, in Des Moines, Nov. 20, 1936, aged 78 years, 8 months and 4 days.

 

She moved with her parents to Lenox, la., in March, 1883, where she has lived

since. She was married to John W. Manroe Feb. 16, 1887. Mr. Manroe died Sept. 1, 1927.

 

To them were born three sons and three daughters. Mrs. Manroe is survived by one son, Geo Manroe of Lenox, and three daughters, Clara and Estella

Manroe of Des Moines, and Mrs. Marybelle Finn of Boone, la. Twin sons preceeded the mother in death. She is also survived  by five grandchildren, Martha Jean Finn of Boone, Raymond, Francis, Helen Marie and Jackie

Manroe of Denver, Colo., two brothers, John L. Gehr of Peoria, Ill., and Joe A. Gehr of Lenox, and two sisters, Mary E. Gehr of Lenox and Mrs. A. M. Ely of Fort Morgan, Colo. One sister, Mrs. Catherine A. Schaub, passed away October 20, 1936

McCahan, Robert Newton -

Word has been received of the death of Robert McCann [McCahan] at his home in Beaumont, Calif. Mr. McCann [McCahan] died in his sleep last Thursday night and funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the church.

He was a brother of John McCann [McCahan] who passed away recently.

McCahan, Robert Newton -

The Beaumont (Calif.) Gazette of Nov. 26 came to us this week and told of the life of Robert McCahan, a former Lenox citizen who had made his home

n that community for something over twenty years. Mr. McCahan died Nov. 20. from an attack of heart disease.

 

Mr McCahan was born in Iowa 68 years ago and moved to California in 1908.  Four years later he settled in Beaumont and resided there continuously

until his death. He was engaged in the real estate business and was an active member of the Beaumont Chamber of Commerce and other civic organizations.

 

Funeral services were held at the Community Presbyterian church in Beaumont, Nov. 23, and were largely attended.

 

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Orpha McCahan, two daughters, Mrs. Bernice England of Beaumont and Mrs Ruth Frank of Chaplin, now residing in Bolivia,

South America, and a sister Mrs. Nancy Stahl, who lives in Iowa.

McNally, Charles -

Word was received the first of the week by John Slattery of the death of Chas. McNally of Honolulu, Hawaii. Mr McNally's early life was spent in and around Lenox, first on a farm southwest of town and later in town. He will be remembered by the older residents.  He died November 8, following an operation. Burial was made in Honolulu.

 

Mr. McNally had been gone from Lenox about 45 years although he had visited here several times during that period.

Mullin, Iowa –

Miss Iowa Mullin, 73, died at her home in Lenox Sunday morning, Nov. 22, following, illness of several years. She was the daughter of William and Elmira

Mullin and was born at Morning Sun, Iowa, Nov. 11, 1863.

Obituary

At the age of 17 Miss Mullin began her career of teaching in the neighborhood of Kent. Later she moved to Lenox where she taught one year in the Lenox school.

 

While in Lenox Miss Mullin  was instrumental in organizing the Church of Christ and was one of the charter members. So far as is known she is the last

of that group to pass on.

 

Miss Mullin enrolled in Drake university and upon her graduation entered upon a career of teaching in the Omaha schools that lasted 34 consecutive years. Upon her retirement she was granted a pension.

 

About four years ago Miss Mullin came back to make her home where she has acquired many friends. Dr. T. T. Harris of Omaha, one of her very close

friends, was with her when she passed away.

 

Miss Mullin loved her church and was very thoughtful of it even in the days she was unable to attend services.

 

Funeral services were held Tuesday morning, Nov. 24, at the Church of Christ, conducted, by the Rev. E. F. Hagee. Burial was made in the Morgan cemetery near Kent.

Nixon, Cova Wilson Seymour -

Cova Seymour Nixon, daughter of Jerry and Mary Belle Wilson, died Dec. 17, 1936, at Pueblo, Colo., at the age of 63 years.

 

The deceased was formerly a Taylor county resident and was well known to many. A daughter, and a son, Mrs. Freeda Bush of Clearfield, and Bert Seymour

of Karvel, Colo., survive; also three grandchildren, Mrs. Mildred Bartels of Clearfield, Clare Dowling of Mankato, Minn., Sylvia Garland of Tingley, Iowa, three great grandchildren, Jesse, Leonard and Nadine Bartels of Clearfield, one sister, Mrs. Etta Carter of Lenox, one half- sister, Mrs. Grace Haynes of Conway, and one brother, Bert Wilson of California.

 

Mr. Nixon died Dec. 14th, 1935. Funeral services were, held at Holyoke, Colo., Monday afternoon, with burial in the Holyoke cemetery beside her former

husband, Willard Seymour.

Orr, William Edgar –

William Edgar Orr, son of William and Sophronia Orr, was born Mar. 12, 1871 at Morning Star, Iowa, and died at his home in Lenox Tuesday November 10, 1936, at the age of 65 years, 8 months and 28 days.  Mr. Orr had been a great sufferer the past five years.

 

At the age of 14 he came with his parents to Lenox and located on a farm west of town.  Here his father passed away about three years later. 

 

He was married to Mary E. Pease, July 4, 1895, and to them were born 10 children, four of whom preceded him in death.  He is survived by his wife and children: Leslie Charles, William, Mrs. Henry Finn, Mrs. Homer Johnson, Mrs. Woodrow Benedict, and eight grandchildren.

 

There are also two brothers, S. H. Orr of Minnesota and C L Orr of Shenandoah, besides other relatives and friends.  He was a kind and loving father who will be missed by all.

 

Funeral services were held at the Barber Funeral home Friday, November 13, at one o’ clock, conducted by the Rev. L. T. Knotter. Burial was made in the Lenox cemetery.

Potts, Elizabeth Kane -

Elizabeth Kane was born in County Deny, Ireland, January 12, 1854, and died November 11, 1936, at her home in Lenox. She came to Philadelphia, Pa., when 17 years old and there she was married to James Potts. Later they moved to Iowa where she made her home until the time of her death.

 

Mr. Potts died December 28, 1928. Mrs. Potts is survived by one sister, Mrs. Sara Faulkner, Albion, Mich., five children, Minnie Summers of Chicago, William Potts of Grinnell, Bessie Stoner of Lenox and Raymond Potts of Stuart. She is also survived by seven grandchildren.

 

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. L. T. Knotter. Burial was made in the Lenox cemetery.

Richey, Abigail Matthews “Abbie  -

Saturday night about 11 o’clock, Mrs. Abbie Richey passed away at her home here in Sharpsburg.  Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church on Tuesday at 2 o’clock.  Burial was made in the Blue Grove cemetery.

Richey, Abigail Matthews “Abbie” –

Abigail Matthews Richey was born near Wooster, Ohio, Sept. 22, 1850, and died at her home in Sharpsburg, la., Nov. 21, 1936, at the age of 86 years.

 

She was married Feb. 4, 1869, to Issac P. Richey at Birmingham, Van Buren county, Iowa. To them were born six children, two of whom died in infancy.

 

In the spring of 1883, Mr. and Mrs. Richey moved with their family to Taylor county and resided on a farm near Lenox until they moved to Sharpsburg in

the spring of 1895. Mr. Richey died Aug. 19, 1901. Mrs. Richey spent the remainder of her life with her son, Shannon Richey.

 

At the age of 17, Mrs. Richey united with the Summit Presbyterian church and remained a faithful member.

 

She is survived by three sons, Ison Edward, Dallas Norman and Shannon De Forrest, all of Sharpsburg, and one daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Brown of Lenox,

ten grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

 

Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church in Sharpsburg Tuesday, Nov. 24 conducted by the Rev. A.S. Hutchinson. Burial was made in the Blue Grove cemetery.

Scotthorn, Delia –

Mrs Delia Scotthorn of Corning died Saturday morning, following a brief illness.  Funeral services were held at the Roland Funeral Home Monday at

2:00 o'clock, and the body was then taken to Oelwein, la., for burial beside her husband.

 

Mr and Mrs. Robert Badgett and Ray and Earl Bassett of Corning, and Roy Bassett of Lenox accompanied the body to Oelwein.

Wright, William L. -

Mrs. Frank Steward received a letter Friday telling of the death of a former resident, William L. Wright, at his home, Seeley, Wyoming, on Oct, 21st.

Mr. Wright and family left Clearfield for Wyoming in 1908 and have since resided there.

 

In this community, Mr. Wright worked at the carpenter's trade. A short time after he went to Wyoming, he became a licensed minister. He and Mrs. Wright

had observed their 60th anniversary some years ago.

 

To mourn his loss are the wife, one son and two daughters, and three grandchildren. The oldest daughter passed away some time ago. Many Clearfield folks will remember this family;
