Blackman, Lavina Catherine Morton -

Lavlna Catherine Morton, daughter of George and Mary Morton, was born near Gravity, Taylor county, Iowa, January 5, 1852, and died at her home in

Clearfield, Iowa, January 8, 1937, at the age of 85 years and 1 day.

When but a small child she moved with her parents to Chillicothe, Iowa, where she grew to womanhood. There she received her education.

She was married to W. F. Blackman February 26, 1872 at Chillicothe, Iowa.  The lived near Chillicothe until the year 1876 when they came to Ringgold county, Iowa, settling on a farm near Mt. Ayr.

Mr. Blackman died August 20, 1911 and one daughter died in infancy.

Those left to mourn her passing are one daughter and three sons:  Mrs. Melissia Parkhurst of Clearfield; George Blackman of Loudon, Tenn., Frank Blackman of White Plains, New York, and Ralph Blackman of Pittsburg, Penn., 6 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives and a host of friends.

Mrs. Blackman came to Clearfield from Mt. Ayr 17 years ago and located one block west of Main street, where she spent the remainder of her life.

In the seventeen years she has lived in Clearfield she has made many friends.  She was of a quiet and retiring nature and to know her was to love her.

Her daughter, Mrs. Parkhurst, has been her almost constant companion for the past year and has tenderly cared for her.

The funeral services were held from the residence Friday afternoon at 1:30, the Rev. W. C. Henn, pastor of the Methodist church, officiating. Interment

was in the Rose Hill cemetery at Mount Ayr beside her beloved husband.

Singers were Misses Doris Baxter and Sue Swan. Pallbearers were Allie Cowell, Gene Baxter, Joe Baxter, Frank Steward, Harry Morey and Robert

Matthews.

Brisbane, Arthur –

Arthur Brisbane, long time editor in chief of the Hearst newspapers, died at 5:30 Saturday morning at the age of 72. He had been ill several days.

Brisbane, whose column appeared in the Time Table each week, wrote a dally column which appeared in all Hearst newspapers and in several hundred

other daily papers throughout the country. He commented on the daily news and his writings were read by millions.

With the death of this noted writer publication of his writings ends. His was not the type of writing that could be written far in advance. It was written from day to day and from week to week.

Posterity may consider him great or may ignore him but his day to day influence on newspaper readers cannot now be ignored.  He wrote for the common man and wrote in a way that the common man could understand.

Mr. Brisbane’s income from the Hearst newspapers and from the syndications of his writings was said to be in the neighborhood of $200,000 a year.  He was said to be the highest paid newspaper writer in the world. 

The Time Table regrets the loss of the feature “This Week” written by Mr. Brisbane.  What appears to be his last column appears in this paper.

Bubb, Robert Dale –

Robert Dale Bubb, four-month-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Bubb, died Monday, January 4, at the home of his parents. He was born September , 1936, at Lenox.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 5 at the Arnold funeral home, in charge of the Rev. E. F. Hagee, pastor of the Christian church. Burial was made at Creston.

Fudge, Virgil -

Coasting accidents in this vicinity have taken one life and resulted in two cases of broken bones within the last few days.  Virgil, 13-year-old son of Mr.

and Mrs. Joe Fudge of near Corning, died Saturday. He was coasting down hill and missed a bridge and went into a ditch. His neck was broken and he died before doctors could arrive

Hamilton, Marion Melville -

The death of M. M. Hamilton Saturday afternoon was a shock to the community. Mr. Hamilton had been in ill health for several years, but only last

Tuesday did his condition become alarming. His sons Boyd and Arthur were called from Des Moines Friday night to be at his bedside.

Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton have been residents of Clearfield 46 years and have many friends

He was a member of the United Presbyterian church and as long as health permitted he was active in its work.

Three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton, all of whom survive their father, and were at the bedside helping care for him to the last. His aged wife also survives.

Marion Melville Hamilton, son of John and Eliza Hamilton was born September 17, 1853, near Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.  When he was a small boy he moved with his parents to Woodford county, Ill. where he grew to manhood. On February 6, 1878 he was married to Emily Gilpin.

Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton came to Iowa in March of 1883, and located on a farm one mile east of Clearfield. They were received into the membership of the Clearfield United Presbyterian church on June 3 of that year. In 1890 they left the farm and moved into Clearfield where they have since resided.

Mr. Hamilton's death occurred at his home Saturday December 26, 1936.

He was the first of the family circle to be taken.  He leaves to mourn his passing his beloved wife, Emily G. Hamilton, three children, Mrs. Myrta Young of Clearfield, J. Boyd Hamilton, and Arthur M. Hamilton, both of Des Moines

three  granddaughters, one grandson and one great granddaughter, nephews, nieces and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held at the residence, Monday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock, Rev. H. B. Hutchman officiating, assisted by Rev. Watson, Methodist minister

of Creston, and a nephew of Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton. Interment was made in the Clearfield cemetery.

Pallbearers were Gene Baxter, Claude Brown, Bert Brown, Ed Owens, Ora DeBord and John Mosier.

Music was by Mrs. J. M. Stephenson, Miss Lila Brown, Messrs. Guy Henderson and Victor Brown, accompanied by Miss Maude Hamilton.

Hegwood, Elizabeth Knott Smith -

Elizabeth Knott, daughter of William and Sarah Knott, was born Feb. 19, 1854; in Peoria county, Ill., and was the youngest of 12 children, The first part of her life was spent in Peoria county where she was married to Charlie Smith. To

them were born one child, Cora Smith. Both father and child passed away the same year.

In April, 1880, she was married to Jason Hegwood. Two sons were born to them, Al and Ernest. In 1883 she and her family moved from Peoria county, Ill., to Taylor county, Iowa, to a farm west of Lenox and were among the early settlers in that section. Mr. Hegwood died May 16, 1900.

Throughout her long life Mrs Hegwood was known by her neighbors and friends as one who was always first to serve in time of sickness and death and

she came to be loved and respected by those who knew her best. Her home was always open to those who passed her way and needed a helping hand. She was loved especially by her six grandchildren who cherish fond memories of happy days spent with their grandmother, who was a great lover of children, and who gained much happiness by doing things for them,  This was especially shown by her taking Eva May Seamon from a New York orphanage

and educating and raising her to maturity.

Mrs. Hegwood died at the home of her eldest son, Al Hegwood, in Lenox, Jan. 19, 1937, at the age of 82 years and 11 months.

She is survived, by her two sons, Al Hegwood of Lenox and Ernest Hegwood of Sharpsburg, one foster child, Eva Widener, Brooklyn, N. Y.. six grandchildren,

Irma Wilcox, Clearfield; Eria Barker, Lenox, Lester Hegwood, Leon, Leland Hegwood, Lenox, Kathryn Hegwood, of Sharpsburg and Russell Hegwood,

Sharpsburg; and three great grandchildren, Donald Jean, Beverly Ann and Wilma Earline Barker of Lenox. Three nieces, Anna Boyden, Carrie Aram and Minnie Shimer, all of Sharpsburg, also survive: her.

Funeral services were held Thursday, January 21, at the Barber funeral home and were to charge of the Rev. E. P. Hagee. Burial was made in the Lenox cemetery.

Jones, Cresap Singleton -

Cresap Singleton, Jones, son of Elias and Ruth Jones, was born in Johnson, county, Iowa January 1, 1858 and died January 4, 1937, aged 79 years and

3 days.

Mr. Jones, with his father's family, came to Taylor county in 1876, where on April 8, 1883, he was married to Kate Rutledge, daughter of Wm. and Louisa Rutledge.

Early in their married life Mr and Mrs. Jones united with the M .E. church and even to the end this good man trusted his Heavenly Father. Very recent«y he said to his companion, "I pray much and often for grace to endure affliction."

Mr. Jones' life was an open book; he was honorable and upright in all his dealings with his fellow men, and was a most indulgent husband and father.

Mr. Jones is survived by his wife, one son, John of Murtaugh, Idaho; four daughters, Dessie Lindau of Murtaugh, Idaho; Clare Hegwood of Sharpsburg; Ruth Bowersox of Spokane, Wash.; Wilma Russell of St. Louis, Mo.; one sister,

Maude Marshall of Cody Wyo., two brothers, Charles of Sharpsburg and Fred of Gretna, Nebr., A son, Don, preceded his father in death Sept. 14, 1893.

A good man has gone from among us.

Martin, Robert Dodds -

Mrs. Gertrude Sharpe of Long Beach, Calif., sent us the following obituary of her father, Robert Dodds Martin, a former Lenox business man. The obituary was written December 24, but Mrs. Sharpe failed to state when he died. We have been unable to find anyone who has received other word from the

Martin  family.

Obituary

Robert Dodds Martin was born near Columbus City, Iowa Feb. 11, 1859 and was one of eight children. When a boy in his teens his parents, James

Dodds Martin and Amanda Harris Martin moved to Clarinda, Iowa, and from there to Coming, where he spent his young manhood.

He was married to Eunice Long Nov. 29, 1877, and to them were born two children, George H. and Gertrude Sharpe.  After farming for a few years, he went into the hardware, furniture and undertaking business in Lenox.  He sold his business in 1913 and moved to Long Beach, Calif. where the family has made its home since.

Early In life he united with the United Presbyterian church and from his eighteenth year was active in church affairs. He was chorister in the Corning

and Lenox churches.

Mr. Martin is survived by his wife and two children, three sisters, four grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.

Page. Fay Hoopes -

Mrs. Fay Page, 32, wife of George A. Page, of Ottawa, Kansas, died January 19 at Ranson Memorial hospital in Ottawa. She had been ill ten days, and in a serious condition for four days. Her death resulted from pneumonia.

Fay Hoopes was born at Richland, Shawnee county, Kansas, Feb. 28, 1904, , the daughter of George A. and Fannie R. (Beam) Hoopes. She was married to

Mr. Page at Lyndon, Kansas Dec. 28, 1926. The husband four children, Harlan Dalton, Norma Frances, Keith Alden and Benny Joe, who was five days old. The parents, who live at Pamona; three sisters, Mrs M. P. List of Kansas City, Mo.

Mrs. Lewis Kunard of Idaha Falls, Idaho, Mrs. Virgil Kurtard of Edgerton, Kans., and two brothers, Lawrence of Richland and Dale of Pamona, survive.

At the age of 13 years, Mrs Page moved with her parent to Pamona, where she lived until her marriage. Since then the family has resided in Baxter

community.

Before her marriage, Mrs Page taught school for six years in north Illinois, Pamona City and Davy schools. She was a member of the Pamona Methodist Episcopal church for many years, and of the Baxter Social Hour club.

The funeral was held Saturday morning at 11 o'clock from the Pamona M. E. church. Interment was made in Baxter cemetery four miles northwest of Ottawa.

Ross, Mrs. Cecil –

Mrs. Clara Ross received a telegram the first of last week telling of the death of her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Cecil Ross, at her home in Council, Idaho on Monday January 4.  Influenza and kidney trouble caused her death.  She leaves her husband and three small children.  Mr. and Mrs. Ross moved to Idaho four years ago from Creston.

Shafer, Stella Agnes -

Stella Agnes Shafer, youngest daughter of John L. and Lillian Shafer, was born Jan. 4, 1907 at the old homestead in Gay township, Taylor county, Iowa, and died on Friday, January 16, 1937, at the Greater Community hospital in Creston, at the age of 30 years and 11 days.

She graduated from the Bedford high school with the class of ‘24 and since that time has spent two years in college at Cedar Falls and the remaining eleven years as a very efficient teacher in the rural schools of Taylor county.

In early girlhood, she united the Christian church of Blockton.  Stella was a young lady of sterling quality and noble character. One that devoted her time and energy to her chosen vocation, and was a model example of upright, honorable living for her pupils and all who were privileged to associate with her. Her kind and loving disposition won her many friends wherever she went.

Her mother preceded her in death in 1923. She leaves to mourn her departure, her father, John L. Shafer; two sisters, Mrs. Maggie Scroggie and Mrs. Lizzie Kammerer; three nieces, four nephews and a host of neighbors and friends.

Funeral services were held at the Christian church in Blockton Monday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. C. Max Buck, pastor of the Bedford Church

of Christ. Burial was in the Platteville cemetery, beside her mother.

Strobel, Henry -

Mrs. U. S. Grant received word of the death of her brother, Henry Strobel, a brakeman on the C. B. & Q. railroad, last Friday. Mr. Strobel was killed by an overturned engine near Milan, Mo.

He was 48 years old. He is survived by his wife, one son, his aged mother, 3 sisters and 4 brothers, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Mr. and Mrs. U. S. Grant and Jake Strobel of Blockton went to Centerville Tuesday to attend the funeral.

Tuttle, Marion F. –

The body of M. P. Tuttle, who died at Kewanee, Ill., Jan. 1, was brought here Saturday for burial. Funeral services were held at the Barber funeral home

and were conducted by Dr. A. L. Davidson. Burial was made in the Lenox cemetery.

Obituary

Marion F. Tuttle, son of John Wort and Jane Flemming Tuttle, was born in Elmira township, Stark county, Ill., Feb; 29, 1860, and died at the Public Hospital in Kewanee, Ill, January 1, 1937, after several weeks of illness.

Mr. Tuttle was educated in the public schools of Elmira township, having attended the Elmira Community school as a boy. Later, as a young man, he

engaged in farming in this community for several years.

He was married, Sept. 25, 1887, to Ella M. Oliver of Elmira, who proceeded him in death March 22, 1927.  Early in their married life Mr. and Mrs. Tuttle

moved to Harvard, Nebr., where they made their home for several years and where two of their children born. Later they moved to Lenox, la., which was their home for over forty years. Since the death of his wife, Mr. Tuttle spent much of his time with his children.

As a young man Mr. Tuttle became a member of the Presbyterian church of Elmira and took an active interest in the work of the church, having been a member of the choir and taught a class of boys in the sabbath school. He was always a great lover of good literature and the natural world about him.

He is survived by two sons and two daughters, Glen O. Tuttle of Elmira, Frank T. Tuttle of Chicago, Mrs. Jean A. Reed of Clarks, Nebr., and Ruth A. Tuttle of College Springs, la., five grandchildren, five sisters and three brothers, Mrs. Anna Jackson of Elnira, Ill., Mrs. Abbie Ham of Toulton, Ill., Mrs. Rebecca Duff of Stockton, Calif., Mrs. Lottie Miner of Long Beach, Calif., Mrs. Maude Fell of Toulon, Ill., Harry L. Tuttle of Monroe, Ore., Will Tuttle and Sam Tuttle of Portland, Ore.

Funeral services were held in the Elmira Federated church Saturday, January 2, at 2:30 conducted by the Rev. Frank G. Pratt. Pall bearers were nephews. All his children were present except one daughter, Mrs. Jean A. Reed of Clarks,

Nebr., who was prevented by snow blocked roads from attending.

Whipple, Adrienne Hill -

Adrienne Hill, daughter of John and Rachel Hill, was born August. 1, 1846, near Columbia, Ohio, and died Friday, January 29, 1937, at Sharpsburg, Iowa, at the age of 90 years, 5 months and 28 days.

She was married to Orville Whipple, March 15, 1866. Mr. Whipple passed away March 25, 1890.

Eleven children were born, of whom four died in infancy. Three sons preceeded her in death, Glen Norris, April 29, 1923, Ben Evan, Sept. 11, 1928,

and Rolland Ashton, May 29, 1934.

She is survived by three sons and one daughter, Clyde M. and A. C. of Sharpsburg, Harry L. of Long Beach, Calif., Lois Gertrude Swain of Garden Grove, Iowa; twenty-two grandchildren and twenty-four great grandchildren. She is also survived by three half sisters and one half brother, all living in Ohio.

She united with the Mount Gilead Christian church in Missouri. Later she transferred her membership to the Second Presbyterian church in Long Beach

Calif.

The funeral was held Sunday at the Sharpsburg Presbyterian church. The Rev. A. P. Mathes had charge of the service.  Mrs. Whipple was laid to rest

beside her husband and children in the Allen cemetery near Eagleville, Mo.
