Black, Robert F. –
Robert F. Black was born August 15, 1863, near Galesburg,
Ill., and passed away at his home at 803 North Sycamore Street, Creston, May 20, 1932.
He came with his parents to Iowa in 1870 and settled near
Lenox, where he made his home until the last five years, when he moved to
Creston.
On March 13, 1889 he was united in marriage to Anna Pearl
Safford at Tarkio, Mo. Three children were born to this union, Mrs. Edith Brown
of Creston, Edgar Black of Lenox, Mrs. Lucie Donahue
of Afton.
Mr. Black was for years a member of the Church of
Christ. He was a man of strong
convictions and after once arriving at a conclusion was as true as the needle
to the pole.
He was a constant reader of the Bible and enjoyed the
associations found in the church. At the
time of his death he was an elder in the church at Creston.
His going from us is a shock to all. He had been ill for the past three months but
did not consider it a serious ailment and insisted on being at work. Only until the last three weeks had he been
confined to his home.
Mr. Black will be missed in his home and church, the two
places where he delighted most to work. He was a loyal husband, loving father
and friend
to all.
He leaves the wife and children, also a niece, Mrs. Leora Gutch of Minneapolis, who
was raised in the home and cared for as a daughter. One brother and two sisters survive him:
George W. Black of Lenox, Mrs Sarah Lyddon of Lenox, and Mrs. Rose Hooker of Chillicothe, Mo.,
a host of nieces and nephews and nine grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Christian church at Lenox
by Rev. E. E. Lister, assisted by Rev. L. Freeman of Lenox. Burial was made at Lenox.

Brown, Anna M. Stevenson –
Anna M. Stevenson, daughter of Abram and Eliza Stevenson,
was born near Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, April 2, 1852. The family moved to
Knoxville, Illinois,
and later to Aledo, Illinois, where she grew to young womanhood and taught in the
public schools.. On March 17, 1875, she was married to George A. Brown at
Aledo. To this union was born five sons, one dying in infancy.
Mrs. Brown early made her profession of faith in Christ, her
membership being held in the Presbyterian Church, and remaining in that denomination
until,
after residing on a farm near Gravity from 1888 until 1901 the family came to
the farm one and one-half miles south of Clearfield. At that
time Mr.
and Mrs. Brown placed their membership in the United Presbyterian
church here. Mr. Brown's death occurred October 19, 1908. That winter Mrs.
Brown took up her residence in Clearfield.
Mrs. Brown's faith bore fruitage in the home, the church and
the community. She especially valued her fellowship of the Bible Class of which
she was a
member.
Only a few of her associates remain. Her friendships knew no denominational
bounds. During the last five years she
was a shut-in, being a constant sufferer, bearing her pain with fortitude.
Her death occurred on Tuesday, June 14th, at the age of 80
years, 2 months, and 12 days. Besides her four sons, she leaves eight
grandchildren; one brother, Howard Stevenson of Aledo, Illinois; several nieces and nephews,
and many friends.
Funeral services were conducted in the home by her pastor,
Rev. H. B. Hutchman, Thursday afternoon at 2:30;
interment in Clearfield cemetery.

Delaney,
Rose May Smith –
Rose May
Smith, daughter of Sam and Julia Smith was born November 4, 1874 near Lenox,
Iowa and departed this life June 16, 1932 in Afton.
She was
united in marriage on October 15, 1895 to Thomas Edison Delaney.
To this
union was born four sons and one daughter, Wilbert Martin, James
Lee, Orval Ray and Edward Paul, all of
Creston; Anna Mildred of Portland, Oregon.
At the age
of 14 she united with the Baptist church at Clearfield, where she held her
membership until 1916 when the family moved to Creston and
she transferred
her membership to the Creston Baptist church.
She was a
kind and loving wife, mother and neighbor and will be greatly missed.
Funeral
services were held at the Deitrick Funeral Chapel,
Creston Iowa, June 19. Interment was made in Graceland
cemetery, Creston, Iowa.

Donaldson, Andrew -
Andrew Donaldson was born at LaSalle, Illinois February 15,
1871. He was the son of David and Ellen Donaldson, and was the fifth child in a
family of eight. When he was three and a half years old the family moved to
Grove Township west of Lenox where he remained most of his life. On January 28,
1897 he was married to Miss Flora Eckler. To this
union were born three children; Harold, who died at the age of two years, 7
months; Lily Mildred, and Norval. He was a member of
the Presbyterian church of Lenox. He
died in the hospital at
Creston, Iowa on April 21,
1932 at the age of sixty-one years, two months, and five days. He is survived by one daughter, Lily Mildred Heckethorn of Oswago,
New York; and a son, Norval, of
Los Angeles, California; his sisters and brother, Mrs. Will Pegg,
Mrs. C. J. Preston, and David Donaldson, all of Lenox, Mrs. Jennie Lewis, John
Donaldson, and Mrs. Tunis Van Pelt, all of Corning, and Mr. Charles Donaldson
of Denton, Montana. Besides these there are many other relatives and friends
who mourn his passing.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, at 2:30 at the
Presbyterian church, conducted by Rev. James Douthitt, and burial was made in Lenox cemetery.

Dutro,
Franklin –
Franklin Dutro passed away Sunday
at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C. E.
Gaines, where he had been
making his home the past two months. Mr. Dutro, who was
a veteran of the Civil War was aged 80 years, 9 months
and 10 days.
The body was taken to Adair where funeral services were held
Tuesday.

Eaton,
Byron P. –
Apparently tired of life, Byron P. Eaton, 54, made all of his own funeral arrangements in Bedford Friday
morning, then walked to the court house park and shot himself. Eaton is believe to have been a railroad
engineer and is from Denver, Colo.
Left by his side was a note addressed to the coroner:
“I, Byron P. Eaton, born at
Hopkins, Mo. Jan. 22, 1877, request that my body be given in care of the
Wetmore funeral home. The expense has
been paid, a marker bought, all necessary notice given, and at the request of
my mother, that I be buried at her side. Mr. Wetmore is unaware of whose
funeral he has been paid.

A dollar was
found in the envelope and his request was carried out.
Eaton is
survived by distant relatives in Bedford. To date no close relatives have been
found.

Marguerite Elizabeth –
Marguerite
Elizabeth, 4 month old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Eberle,,
passed away at the home near Lenox last Friday, June 3. The cause of the death was whooping cough.
Marguerite
Elizabeth was born February 2, 1932, and was the only child in the family. She is survived by her parents and her
grandparents.
Funeral
services were held at St. Patrick’s church in Lenox Sunday morning, June 5, at
10 o’clock, conducted by Rev. Pouget. Burial was made at Calvary cemetery at
Corning.

Ennis, Charles H. -
Charles H. Ennis, one of Clearfield's early settlers, died
Sunday, April 17, at the home of his son, Dr. Harry H. Ennis, in Baxter, Iowa,
at the age of 87 years, 4 months, and 16 days. He was born in East Machias, Maine, and in
early manhood came west to Illinois, coming shortly after to southern Iowa,
where for twenty-five years he was engaged in business in Clearfield and other
points. He was in the lumber business here, also in the clothing business
later. He was married to Miss Carrie
Allen in 1876 and their married life was spent in Clearfield, Mrs. Ennis
passing away in 1888. He was the father
of four children, his two sons, Harry of Baxter, Iowa, and Lee of Oklahoma
City, Oklahoma, and two grandchildren being left to mourn his loss. Mr. Ennis kept his faculties of body and mind
to a remarkable degree until a short time before his death, and had a keen
interest in the events of the day. He resided in Rome, Iowa, the last six years
of his life, being taken to his son’s home in Baxter a little over two weeks
before his death. He was a member of the
First Baptist church of Rome, and for sixty-six years
was a member of the Masonic order. Funeral services were conducted at the home of
Dr. Ennis on Wednesday afternoon, at 2:30, Rev. Norstrom of the Community Congregational church officiating, and Mr. Chas. Davis having
charge of the Masonic rites there. On
Thursday the body was brought to Clearfield for burial and was accompanied by
Dr. and Mrs. Harry Ennis and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Ennis and daughter, and
a body of Masonic brethren, the Clearfield Masonic order having charge of the
Masonic services at the cemetery.
Mr. Ennis also had one son by his second wife, Elwood Ennis,
of Essex, Iowa who with wife and daughter also survive him.

Ewalt, Charles Hicks –
Charles
Hicks Ewalt son of Clem and Margarette Ewalt was born May 1, 1851 at San Antonio, Texas.
When but two
years of age he moved with his parents to Peoria where he grew to manhood.
He was
united in marriage to Miss Raberta Brumbaugh, Jan. 21, 1875, in Peoria, Ill. To this union
were born three children one dying in infancy.
In 1887 Mr. Ewalt moved to a farm southwest of Lenox where he lived
several years. In 1901 he moved to Clearfield.
He was a
member of the Episcopal church.
Mr. Ewalt was a kind, loving friend and neighbor and will be
greatly missed.
He died at
the home of his ion Frank 2 miles east of this place [Clearfield], at the age
of 80 years, 11months and 23 days. His death occurred April 24.
He is
survived by one son, Frank, and one daughter, Mrs. George Swanson, and one
grandson Millard Lee Ewalt.
Mrs. Ewalt preceded him in death several years ago and since
that time he has made his home with his son.
Funeral
services were held at the home Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev, Hutchman. Interment was made in Clearfield cemetery.

Feeney, Agatha Barton –
Agatha
Barton was born near Martinsville, Keokuk County, Iowa, February 9, 1870.
In 1874 her
parents came to Taylor County, Iowa where she grew to womanhood, teaching in
public schools for a number of years.
She was
united in marriage to Patrick J. Feeney on June 5, 1900. After living for several years in Gravity and
vicinity, they moved to Lenox where she and her mother have since resided. Her husband passed away January 18, 1924.
Since
December, Mrs. Feeney’s health has failed rapidly, and after many days of
suffering, her Heavenly Father saw fit to call her home. She leaves to mourn her going, her mother,
Mrs. Mary Barton of Lenox, two brothers, Cassius of Braddock, S. D., Chester of
Mapleton, Iowa, three sisters, Mrs.
Celesta Smith of Gravity, Mrs. Sadie Wilson of Riverside, California, and Mrs.
Irene Rogers of Chamberlain, S. D. and many other relatives and numberless
friends.
She united
with the Lenox Methodist church in 1918. She was a member of Salome Chapter, order of
Eastern Star, and also of the May Flower Club of Lenox.
Funeral
services were held at the Arnold Funeral home on Monday, June 13 at 2 o’clock,
conducted by Rev. F. L. Shepherd. Music
was furnished by the following quartet: Mrs. W. H. Madden, Mrs. F. L. Shepherd, Mrs. Marvin Fleming, and Mrs.
Arthur Muncey.
Burial was
made in Fairview cemetery.

Goodale,
Effie Anna Polston –
Mrs. George
L. Goodale passed away at the Greater Community
hospital in Creston Sunday, July 3, following an illness of almost three weeks.
She was
taken ill
Wednesday, June 15, and on the following Sunday was taken to the hospital where
she suffered a great deal of pain until death came to her relief.
Her death
was due to heart trouble.
Funeral
services were held at the Methodist church in Lenox, Tuesday, July 5, at 2:30,
and were conducted by Rev. F. L. Shepherd. Music was furnished
by a quartette
composed of Marcia Barber, Audrey Gaines, Earl Beadel and Marvin Fleming. Burial was made in Fairview cemetery.
Obituary
Effie Anna Goodale, daughter of Philip and Mary Polston,
was born at Salina, Iowa, April 24, 1862. During the winter of 1878 her parents
moved to Lenox and here, in 1880, she was married to George L. Goodale and they made this community their home continuously
from that time.
To Mr. and
Mrs. Goodale were born six children: Frank E. Goodale, of Eagle Grove, la.;
Lillian M. Copeland and Betta Goodale of Lenox, Nellie E. Steffarud, Fern M. Dodds and Lucille Munger, all of
Des Moines. All the children were
present at the funeral, as was Eugene V. Goodale, a grandson,
who has made his home with his grandparents, and of whom his grandparents were
very fond.
Mrs. Goodale united with the Methodist church of Lenox on May
28, 1891, being received into the church by Rev. P. E, Campbell, and she
remained a faithful member to the end of her life.
Besides her
children, she is survived by her husband, her mother, Mrs. Mary E. Polston of Lenox, and three sisters, Osa M. Harding of Perry Oklahoma; Pearl Van Cleef of Salina, Kansas, and Bessie Sargeant of Sioux City, Iowa, and five
grandchildren, all of whom were present at the funeral service.
Among the
out of town friends who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. James McDonald

Hill, Lucy Ellen Franklin
Lucy Ellen
Franklin, daughter of Harriett and John Franklin, was born September, 11, 1855,
on a farm near Alexis, Ill., where she lived until she was married to Jack
Hill, January 22, 1874.
In 1880 they
moved to Taylor county, Iowa, where she lived the most of the remainder of her
life. To Mr. and Mrs. Hill were born ten
children, four of whom preceeded the parents in
death. Mr. Hill passed away February 11,
1914.
Surviving
Mrs. Hill are six children, Bert, Ott, Grace Schafroth, Edd, Ethel Swartz and
Faye Miller; 15 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Mrs. Hill
passed away May 16, 1932, at the home of her youngest daughter, Faye Miller, of
near Corning, with all her family at her bedside. She was 76
years, 8 months
and 5 days of age.
Mrs. Hill
was an exceptionally devoted mother and grandmother. She is the last of a
family of eight children.
Funeral
services were conducted by Rev. L. V. Freeman, assisted by Rev. F. L. Shepherd.
Prayer was offered at the home at 1 o'clock and services were held at the
Arnold funeral home at 2-30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, May 19. A mixed quartette, made up of Mrs. Alice
Preston, Mrs. Metta Porter, Leo Caskey and Will Bryant sang three numbers, “Going Down the
Valley”, “No Night There”, and “Nearer My God To Thee”. Burial was made in Fairview cemetery.

Hoke,
Ben -
Ben Hoke, 77, a long time resident of the Kent community, was
killed Sunday afternoon on highway No. 34, about five miles west of Stringtown corner. Mrs. Hoke,
who «was riding with her husband was also seriously injured and is now in the
hospital at Creston, suffering from fractured ribs, dislocated collar bone,
scalp wounds, a badly mangled hand and other bruises and cuts.
The accident
occurred about 3:30 when Mr. Hoke attempted to turn
from the road into the driveway of the Mart Miller farm. A truck, driven by
Frank
Maynes of Stuart, struck them from the rear and upset their
car.
Funeral
services were Wednesday afternoon at Christian church in Kent, conducted by
Rev. E. E. Lister of Creston, assisted by Rev. A. S. Hutchinson of Kent. Burial was made in Graceland cemetery in
Creston.

Kimball, Robert Lee –
Robert Lee
Kimball, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Kimball, was born August 1, 1931, in Lenox,
and passed away following a short illness of but a few days,
on Friday, May
6, at the Coakley hospital in Creston, at the age of
9 months and 5 days.
He is
survived by his parents, 4 sisters and 3 brothers, as well as many other relatives .
Funeral
services were held at the J. H. Barber home Sunday afternoon, at 1:45. conducted by Rev. L. V. Freeman. Mrs. Alice Preston assisted
in the service by singing “God Will Take Care of You," and "Safe in
the Arms of Jesus", with
Miss Annola Toler as pianist. Burial was made at Knowlton, Iowa.

Long, Wilbert Marshall –
Wilbert
Marshall Long was born in Mercer county, Pennsylvania,
April 15, 1867 and died at his home in Clearfield May 12, 1932, at the age of
65 years and 27 days.
When he was seven
years of age he came with his parents to Iowa where he grew to manhood.
He received
his business education at Tarkio, going from there to Omaha where he spent
several years.
He came back
to Clearfield about 40 years ago where he has since been engaged in
business.
In 1896 he
united with the United Presbyterian church of Clearfield and has always been a
consistent member.
In 1900 he
was united in marriage to Lola Henderson of this place [Clearfield].
No children
were born to this union, but two children of a brother were taken into the home
when they were small and were treated as their own, namely: Wilbert B. Long of
Clearfield and Mrs. Viva Long Hawthorne of Washington, D. C.
W.M. as he
was known to most everyone, will be greatly missed in
the home, in the church, and in the community at large.
He is
survived by his wife, Lola Henderson Long, Wilbert B. Long and Viva Hawthorne,
four brothers, J. C. of Lompoc, California; Mark Long of Long Beach, Cal.; Dr.
Lee Long of Fresno, and Dr. Sam Long of Bakersfield, Cali.; three sisters, Mrs Anna Strain of Clearfield, Mrs. Maggie Wyant of Bedford, Mrs. Suzie Gordon of Lenox, also a host
of nieces and nephews besides other relatives and friends.
The pall
bearers were the nephews, G.A. and Hugh Wyant, Roy
and Wilbert Long, Lee and Hugh Gordon. Honorary pall bearers were Paul Wilson and Claire Henderson.
Funeral
services were held in the United Presbyterian church Sunday at 1:00. Rev. H. B. Hutchinson officiated and was
assisted by Rev. J. C. Turner, pastor of the Methodist church and Rev. P. L.
Browns, pastor of the Christian church. Interment was made in Clearfield cemetery.

McCann,
James William –
James
William McCann, son of James and Margaret McCann was born at Connersville,
Indiana, June 17, 1863, and departed this life at his home in
Clearfield, Iowa April 16, 1932 at the age of 68 years, 9 months
and 29 days.
He spent his
early life and also received his education in the vicinity of his birth.
He came to
Iowa in his early twenties and located in Warren County, Iowa where he met and
married Sadie Oustott, February 14, 1887. To this
union
were born five
children, two of whom died in early childhood. Lee W of Afton, Iowa, Jennie and Anna Rusco of Athelstan survive.
Mrs. McCann
passed away April 30, 1900.
Mr. McCann
was again united in marriage on June 2, 1901 to Mrs Cassie White Goff of Blockton, Iowa. To this union
were born five children; J. William of
Shannon
City, la., Minnie Wessels of
Noyes, Minnesota; Wesley, Velma and Cassie of Des Moines, Iowa.
He united with
the Christian Church when a young man and was an active and faithful member as
long as health permitted.
He moved to
Clearfield in 1930 remaining here until his death. He met his duties of life
and every obligation of citizenship in a manly way, and leaves an influence of
kindness and unselfishness with all of his acquaintances.
He leaves to
mourn his death, his wife, three sons, five daughters and one step son, Joe
Goff of Swea City, Iowa to whom he was also a devoted
father, ten grandchildren, two half brothers, Harry and Dan McCann of
Connersville,
Indiana, a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral
services were held in the Clearfield Church of Christ, conducted by Rev. P. L.
Browns. Interment was made in Blockton cemetery.

McIntyre, Jeremiah Ross -
Ross McIntyre passed away at his home in Lenox early Monday
morning, April 12. He had been in poor health for some time. The cause of his
death was nephritis.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist church, Tuesday
afternoon at 2:30, conducted by Rev. F. L. Shepherd. A quartet composed of Dr.
and Mrs.
Cash, Mrs. W. H. Madden an! O. P. Arnold furnished the
music. Burial was made at Fairview

Jeremiah Ross McIntyre was born near Little York, Illinois
March 10, 1855, and died Monday, April 11, 1932, at the age of 77 years, 1
month and 1 day.
He was married November 25, 1880, to Olive O. Fife and t» them were born three children, Aulora,
Minerva, and William. He is survived by two sisters,
Mrs. Margaret Fife and Mr.
Belle McCahan.
Mr. McIntyre was a member of the Methodist church and was a
faithful attendant.
Lenox

McNaughton,
William F. –
Dr. W. Readhead received a letter last week from Peter
Peterson of Chicago, which told of the death of William F. McNaughton, a former
Lenox resident.
Mr.
McNaughton suffered a stroke on April 27, and did not regain conciousness. He died May 6 and funeral services were held
May 9, under the auspices of Boulevard lodge No. 882 A.F.&A.M. He was a member of the Policeman’s
association.
In his letter, Mr. Peterson said that Mr. McNaughton had
suffered considerable unhappiness during the past year. The savings of a lifetime were wiped out when
a real estate company with which he had his money invested went bankrupt. Last fall Mr. and Mrs. McNaughton were
injured in an automobile accident and she spent six weeks in a hospital and has
been a cripple since, being able to get around with the assistance of two
crutches.
Mr. McNaughton has been a member of the Chicago police force
for over thirty years. His wife will
receive a monthly pension.

Speer,
James Walker –
James Walker
Speer died at his home here [Clearfield] Tuesday, April 26
after an illness
of several months. He had been confined to his bed but a few weeks. Mr. Speer
was born in Oil City, Pennsylvania, May 20, 1859, and at his
death was 72
years, 11 months, and 6 days old. When a young man he moved to Nebraska with
his parents and on November 2, 1892, was united in marriage to Miss Nettie Jane
Voss. To this union was born one son, Ray
who has been
his constant companion and cared for him during his declining years. In 1909
they moved to Missouri and resided there for five years, then
came to the
vicinity of Clearfield residing for a time on a farm, then moving into town.
His wife died in 1920. He leaves to mourn his passing one son, Ray,
of
Clearfield; one grandson, James Speer; three sisters, Mrs. Dell Ferris of St.
Croix Falls, Wisconsin; Mrs. Mollie Huffman of Beaver Crossing, Nebraska;
and Mrs. Jennie
Burton of McCook, Nebraska, several nieces and nephews and many other relatives
and friends. Funeral services were conducted Thursday
afternoon at 2:30, the Methodist Church, Rev. John C. Turner officiating; interment in
the Clearfield cemetery.

Wax, Clyde –
Clyde Wax,
son of Smith and Catherine Wax, was born near Knowlton, Iowa, March 29, 1878
and died at his home in Des Moines, Iowa Thursday, April 28,
1932, at the age of 54 years and 1 month.
He came to
Clearfield, Iowa with his parents in 1901. On March 17, 1903 he was united in
marriage to Miss Belva McKelvy. From here they moved to Ft. Morgan, Colorado
where they resided six years, moving from there to Des Moines, Iowa where they
have since resided.
He leaves to
mourn his loss his wife and one son, LeRoy Wax of Des
Moines, Iowa, two brothers, Geo. of Clearfield, and Will of Pomona, California;
John of
Rolfe, Iowa; two sisters, Mrs. Etta Garside of Council Bluffs Iowa
and Mrs. Simpson of Diagonal, Iowa.
Funeral
services were held Friday afternoon at the Hamilton Funeral home in Des
Moines. Interment in
Laurel Hill cemetery.
