Barrens, Joseph Denison -
Joseph Denison, son of Thomas and Sarah Barrans,
was born on Bureau County, Ill., Feb. 9, 1873 and departed this life at
his home in West Clearfield April 25, 1954 at the age of 81 years.
He moved with his family to Lenox in 1874 and grew to
manhood there. At an early age he became a member of the Presbyterian church in Lenox. After teaching for a time he became a
farmer, later he entered the livery and horse buying business in Clearfield. At
all times he was interested in the affairs of his nation and was well informed about
its government.
On March 22, 1905 he was united in marriage to Miss Bessie Crew,
daughter of James and Viola Crew. To this union
were born 5 children, two dying in infancy. Surviving him are his wife, two
daughters, Helen Hicks of Bolckow, Mo., and Barbara Robison
of Gaylord, Ore.; one son, Joseph C of Portland, Ore., and 3
grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Christian church.
Rev Wm Howes officiated. Burial in Clearfield
cemetery.

Funeral
services were held at the United Presbyterian church in Lenox Saturday at 2 p.
m., for Mrs. Jennie Bennett, 81, who died Wednesday at 10:30 p. m., at her home
in Atchison, Kan. Services were held
there also before coming to Lenox,
Her husband,
Arthur A, Bennett, preceded her in death. She and her husband operated a
grocery store and restaurant in Lenox a number of years ago, before moving to
Atchison.
Rev. Willard
M. Morris was the Minister for the service here. Burial was jn the Lenox cemetery.

nephews, David Bennett of Lenox; Don Bennett, Clearfield; 2 nieces, Miss Marie
and Miss Flora Bennett, both of Lenox.

p. m., for Gaylene, infant daughter of Mr and Mrs Jack
Blood of Sharpsburg, who died at 8 a. m., Saturday. Survivors: Her parents, Mr and Mrs Jack Blood; a twin brother; an older brother and sister. The Bender Funeral

here received word of the death of Lee D. Jacoby, of Lees Summit, Mo. on Jan.
17. Lee was a former resident of Lenox
having spent his boyhood here and graduating from Lenox High School. He was in the clothing store here for many
years. His wife, the former Effie Beach, 2 sons, 4
daughters and 7 grandchildren survive.

Jacoby, Lee
D. -
Lee D.
Jacoby was born in Mendota, Ill., March 28, 1880, and passed away at his home
in Lee's Summit Mo., Sunday evening at 9:40 o'clock, Jan. 17, 1954 at the age
of 73 years, 10 months and 20 days. He was the oldest of two sons of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Jacoby. His brother, Gall died several
years ago in Corpus Christi, Tex.
Mr. Jacoby
was graduated from the Lenox high school with the class of 1898. After his
marriage to Effie J. Beach, daughter of the late George S. and Luella E. Beach
of Lenox, la., he engaged in the men's clothing
business here for several years, moving to Robstown, Texas in 1910 where he was
in the real estate and banking business. In 1922 the family moved to Lee's
Summit Mo., where they have since resided. Mr. Jacoby was a highly respected
citizen and businessman, and a member of the Masonic Order.
Survivors
are his wife, of the home; two sons, Lyle B. of Oklahoma City and William Royce
of Casper, Wyo.; four daughters: Mrs. Genevieve Hawkins, Mrs. Alice Acuff both of Lee's Summit; Mrs. Ora Gorrey, Springfield, Pa., and Mrs. Maxine Giles of
Kansas City, Mo. Eight grandchildren and one great granddaughter.
Norma Lee
preceded her father in death, having passed away at the age of 1 year and 10
months in Texas in 1913.

died Friday morning at her home in Hepburn after a 3
year illness.

McKee, Effie -
Mrs Minnie Polsley received word Thursday of the death of
her aunt, Mrs. Effie McKee, 82, at Marshalltown. Since the age
of 5 she had lived in Creston, where funeral services were held Saturday at 2 p. m.
Burial in Graceland cemetery. Mr. McKee preceded her in death Sept. 30, 1952.
She is survived by 4 sons and one daughter.

Mrs. Blanche Bruington received word Saturday of the death of her
son-in-law, E. Dale Morris, 52, on Saturday, Jan. 16
at 8 a. m. at
the hospital in Pasadena, Tex. He had formerly lived at Gravity and
Clarinda. Services were Monday p. m.,
in Pasadena
with burial there. Survivors: his aged mother, Mrs. Margaret Morris; 2
daughters, Margaret Blanche and Marjorie Jean Morris, all of Pasadena.

Pierson, Fannie Elnora Galigher -
Fannie
Elnora, daughter of Urich Nelson and America Jane Galigher was born in Port Byron, Ill., Feb. 5, 1861 and passed away at her
home here in Gravity April 15, 1954 aged
93 years, 2 months and 10 days.
Shortly
after the Civil War the Galigher family came via
covered wagon to Page County, Ia., where they lived among pioneer conditions
for many years.
She was
married to W. P. Pierson June 20, 1878 at the Galigher home ten miles northwest of Clarinda. They moved to a
farm north of
Gravity where they lived for several years later moving to Gravity, living at
the present home for over forty years.
Three
daughters are left to mourn her passing as well as one grandson, Mrs Flo Swanson of Bedford, Miss June Pierson
of Gravity and Mrs Pearl Reynolds Rice of St Joe, Ark., and one
grandson, R R Reynolds of Grand Junction, Colo. One
sister-
in-law, Mrs Emma Galigher Carrigan of Hood River, Ore., Miss Tillie Pierson of Red
Oak; besides a host of nieces and nephews and a large number of friends. Her
husband preceded her in death in June, 1945.
Funeral
services at the home were conducted by the Rev Wm J Weber, pastor of the
Methodist church. Music: pianist, Mrs
Claude Gray,
and soloist Gordon Hill singing Going Home and My Work
is Done. Pall bearers: Howard Perdew, Herman McCalla, Kenneth Lock, Kenneth Meyers, Bob Taylor, Max

Powell of Conway died Tuesday at University Hospital in Iowa City. The body was
brought by J R Crew to the

Saylor, Lawrence Lyle –
Two persons
died as a result of a two car collision four miles south and two miles east of
Lenox Saturday afternoon about
2 o'clock.
The dead are Mrs. Carl Longfellow, 32, mother of five children, who died before
help arrived, and Lawrence Saylor, 37, who died in a Creston hospital at 5:30
p. m. the same afternoon.
Carl
Longfellow was treated at the hospital for head injuries and was dismissed
Monday. His son Jerry 14, and daughter Alice, 2 1/2 years old, suffered slight
injuries. The other three Longfellow children, Paul 12, Linda, 10, and Julia,
6, were riding with their parents, but were not injured.
The
Longfellow home is on a farm southeast of Lenox. Mr. Saylor was alone in his car. He is
survived by his widow,
Mildred and two sons, Larry and Wayne.
Sheriff
Lucas said the Longfellow car was traveling west and the Saylor car was going
south at the corner near the Arlo Beggs farm. The cars were almost total wrecks. The Longfellow car was on the graveled highway after the collision. The Saylor car came to rest quite a distance
away in a corn field.
Saylor
suffered spinal injuries, a crushed pelvis and chest injuries. An emergency call was made by the Creston
hospital
for additional
blood from the Red Cross center at Omaha for use in treatment. This was taken
by plane of the Iowa-Nebraska civil air patrol, but arrived after Mr. Saylor
passed away.
Mr. Saylor
had lived in Taylor county all of his life and for the
past several years had farmed in the Clearfield area. His
home was one and
a half miles southwest of Clearfield. Funeral services for him were held
Tuesday at the Methodist
church in Clearfield, with burial in Clearfield cemetery.
Services for
Mrs. Longfellow were Wednesday afternoon at the Christian Church at Clearfield,
conducted toy Rev. William
Howes. Burial was
in Bedford cemetery. Her brothers, Paul Snyder of Alexandria, Va., and Harold
Snyder in the navy at
Norfolk, Va.,
arrived Monday evening.

Mrs Agnes
Bailey received a message Sunday of the death of her uncle, Glen Simpson of Des
Moines, a former undertaker in Diagonal. Funeral services were held Wednesday
in Des Moines with burial in the Clearfield cemetery.

Mrs. Henry Tieman was called to Creston Monday by the illness of her
mother, Mrs Ben Sprague. Mrs. Sprague died Thursday
at the Creston hospital. Funeral services were held Sunday in Carbon, Iowa.

Starr, Oscar Walter -
Oscar Walter
Starr, son of Maria Minert and Adam Starr, was born
Nov 20, 1871 in Montgomery County, southeast of
Villisca,
and passed away at the Rosary Hospital in Corning Jan. 17, 1954 at the age of
82 years, 1 month, 27 days. His early life was spent on the farm and his
education was received in the rural schools of Montgomery County, la., his last
teacher be being the late Dr. J. H. Wallahan of
Corning.
On July 1,
1894, he was united in marriage to Lelia Rolston, who preceded him in death on Jan. 12, 1952. They
located on
the farm of his
birthplace, the house having been built here by his father following the Civil
War. In this home were born
their two
daughters, Mrs. Zola Ruben and Mrs. Marie Repass. After living here five years they moved a
half mile east of Nodaway, which place has been their home throughout the years
following. On July 1, 1951, Mr. and Mrs.
Starr observed their 57th wedding anniversary.
Oscar has
been active in community affairs all his life. He was united with the
Presbyterian church at an early age, was a member of
the Masonic Iroquols Lodge No. 590 for 48 years,
serving as its master at different times. Its principles
formed the pattern for his life's journey while here on earth. He also served two
terms on the Board of Supervisors of Adams County. Iowa.
He was
preceded in death by his father, mother, two sisters, Mary Starr and Mrs. Ada Poston and one brother, Emery Starr. His passing marks
the last of the Starr family. He is
survived by his two daughters and sons-in-law: Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Ruben of
Lenox and Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Repass of Villisca; one
sister-in-law, Mrs. Ben J. Gibson of Des
Moines, and a number of nieces and nephews to whom he was very devoted.
Funeral
services by Rev. Wm Niles were held Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1954 at the
Presbyterian Church in Nodaway, la. Masonic rites by Iroquois
Lodge, 690. Final
resting place, Nodaway cemetery. Pall bearers were Gilbert Rider, Fred Carruthers, Harold Everett, Chas. Wood, Ted Kennedy and
Harold Narigon.

Taylor, Virginia Morris -
Funeral
services for Mrs. Earl Taylor were held at the Christian church Sunday
afternoon. [Gravity] Benjamin A. Hollis, minister of Christian church of
Bedford had charge of services. Burial in Gravity cemetery. Mrs. Taylor had been in poor health for many months but death came unexpectedly
on Wednesday. [Feb. 10] She leaves her husband, two sons, Bob and Ted of
Gravity and two granddaughters and one sister, besides a host of other
relatives and friends.

Travis, Henry Gilbert -
Sympathy is
extended to Mr. and Mrs. Armand Travis and children Carol and Dennis in the
loss of their son and brother,
Henry Gilbert, who was killed in an automobile accident near
McCook. Neb. on
Wednesday, Feb. 10. He attended Union
No. 9 school and the Prescott High school. In 1952 he enlisted in
the army and only recently returned from Korea.
Gilbert was
driving from Ft. Carson, Colo., to Ft. Leonard where he was to be stationed for
his few remaining months of service.
Services
were held at Stringtown church Sunday afternoon with
a large crowd attending. Burial was at the Stringtown
cemetery.
Rev. Sheffel officiated at the services.

Troy, James J. A. –
The Rev.
James J. A. Troy, 69, pastor of St. Austin’s Catholic Church for the past 16
years died Jan. 23 in a Minneapolis hospital. He was the pastor of St. Patrick’s church in Lenox when the present
church was built.
Msgr. Troy
was one of the most titled clergyman in the St. Paul
archdiocese. He had served 30 years as
army chaplain and been active otherwise in the church. He was a native of Ireland, coming to
American in 1926 shortly after he was ordained.
Mrs. Leslie
L. Olson of Minnesota sent a clipping telling of his death.
