Barr, Ida C. Bowman –
Mrs. Ida
Barr, 80, died Sunday morning at 11 o’clock at a nursing home in Bedford. She had lived in this vicinity most of her
life.
Services were
held Nov. 13 at the Bender Funeral Home with Rev. Homer Caskey of Council Bluffs officiating. Burial
was in the Lenox cemetery.
Casket-bearers
were Harold Rundlett, Francis Mohler,
Francis House, Arthur Calvin, Roy Case and Harry Cheese, with music by Marcia
Bender and Normal Paymal.
OBITUARY
Ida C.
Bowman, daughter of J N and Martha Ferren Bowman was
born in Clayton County, Iowa March 5, 1876 and passed away at Bedford, Iowa,
Nov. 14, 1956 after an illness of over four years.
She was baptized
when a young girl in the Re-organized Church of the Latter Day Saints.
In 1898 the
family moved from Clayton County to Southwest Adams County.
She was
united in marriage to Robert George Barr on March 1, 1899 and made their home
in Mercer township until 1909 when they moved to
Lenox. Mr. Barr passed away Easter
Sunday, April 9, 1939.
Two children
survive, Ruth and Robert Russell, also one son-in-law Bryan D. Mohler of Bedford, Iowa, one daughter-in-law, Mildred, and
grandson, Robert George Barr, one granddaughter, Gretchen Barr and two great
grandchildren, Donna and Robert IV, all of San Francisco, California. One brother and one sister also survive.
Her home and
family, her garden and her flowers were her chief interests in life, until
failing health caused her to leave her home and be cared for in the home of her
daughter and son-in-law.

Everett
Clifton Brand, son of William and Hattie Belle McFarland Brand, was born April
28, 1896 on a farm southeast of
Bedford,
Iowa, and departed this life Jan 2, 1957 at the age of 60 years, 8 months and 5
days. He died at his farm home near
Diagonal after several years of illness with heart trouble. His entire life was
spent in and around his last home with the exception of 1½ years he spent in
Wyoming. He was married Jan 4, 1&18 to Jennie May Johnson.
He is survived
by his widow, 2 brothers, Elmer of Bedford, Roy of Shannon City, and 1 sister, Mrs Iva Akers of Gravity,
several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by
his mother, father, 3 sisters and 4
brothers.
He was a kind and devoted husband, a good friend and neighbor and was always
ready to help others in need of help as long as his health permitted.
Funeral
services were at Clearfield Friday, the Rev Howard Ball officiating. Burial was
in Lenox cemetery.

Lori Dawn Colyn, still born daughter of Mr and Mrs John Colyn was born
at the hospital at McPherson, Kans., Feb 7.
Survivors
include the parents and three little girls, Cathy, Kay Ann and Leslie;
also grandparents, Rev and Mrs Chas
Colyn of Lenox. Committal service and burial
were at McPherson cemetery Saturday morning at 10 o'clock.

Mrs Maggie DeLean, 77, of Lewis, Iowa, died in an Atlantic hospital
after a long illness. The daughter of Marshall and
Emma McFall Keith, she was born at Fremont June 20, 1871 and was
the first person to be born in a frame house in Mahaska county.
The family
lived in Atlantic for a time and later moved to Taylor county.
She was married to Malcolm DeLean Mar., 25,1900 They lived in the Sharpsburg and Nodaway communities
before moving to Lewis.
Mrs DeLean was a member of the Methodist Church, past worthy
matron of OES and secretary of the Lewis OES for 30
years. She was a
member of the White Shrine, Rebekah Lodge, Lewis Crescent Priscilla and Garden clubs.
Surviving
are three daughters, Helen and Margaret of Lewis, Mrs Ruth McWhorter of Council Bluffs; three sisters Mrs Lela Clark of Sharpsburg, Mrs Mary King of Omaha and Mrs Wilbur Cunningham of Betha,
Alberta, Canada. Mr DeLean died in 1917 and a daughter, Ethel in 1937.
Funeral
services and burial were at Lewis, Iowa.

received word Sunday of the death of Mrs Wm Gibson 95
years old of Grand Island Neb. but formerly of
Nodaway. The burial will be at Corning.

This community
was greatly shocked by the very sudden death of Walter Greenway on Sunday
evening. He and Mrs
Greenway had
been employed at Glenwood and apparently was in good health, when he suffered a
heart attack Sunday
evening at Bedford. He is survived by his wife Mabel, a son Chub Greenway of
Bedford, a daughter, Mrs Vern Trumbo of Clinton,
several grandchildren and other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral
Services were Tuesday at the Christian in Gravity.

Funeral services were held at the U P Church in Tingley Friday afternoon for Mrs Emma Henderson, 88, who passed away
at the home of her son, E Claire Henderson here Tuesday afternoon. Services were
conducted by Rev Sidney Sandusky of
Tingley, with Rev Kenneth Dailey of Clearfield assisting. Interment was in Tingley cemetery

Emma C. Hurley the daughter of Alexander and Nancy Cochran, was born October 4, 1876 near Carthage, Illinois.
In 1900, she was married to Luther Hurley, to which union 3
children were born, 2 of them dying in infancy, leaving one
son,
Ralph, who lives in Des Moines with his wife Margaret.
Seven sisters and one brother have preceded her in death.
One brother Harry Cochran, of Lenox is left to mourn her passing.
Mrs Hurley was a member of the Methodist Church, and of the Rebekah Lodge. She served as secretary of the Rebekahs
for many years, enjoying the work very much.
Death came on Monday, June 18, 1956 at the Thomas Nursing
home at the age of 79 years, 9 months and 14 days.
Funeral Services were Wednesday June 20, at the Bender
Funeral home, the Rev. B. C. Collier officiating. Burial was
in Lenox Cemetery.

Mrs Emma Hurley, 81, died late Monday night at the Lenox Rest Home.
Funeral services were Wednesday afternoon at the Bender

Cochran of Lenox.

of the sudden death of Levi Kernen at the hospital in
Shenandoah where he was
with Mrs Kernen who was a patient there. Funeral services

at Phoenix, Arizona on Monday.
Geo grew to

George Manroe, 61, bachelor, died
at Omaha, Monday, at 5 a m at St. Catherine's
Hospital. He moved from Lenox 12 years ago. Funeral services were Thursday at 9 a.m. at
St. Patrick’s church with Rev. Father Patrek O’Shea
officiating. Burial was in St. Patrick’s
cemetery. Rosary was said Wednesday at the Bender Funeral
Home.
Survivors: 3 sisters, Clara and Stella Manroe,
both of Des Moines, Mrs Mary Bell Fmn of Boone, 4 cousins, Ben, Jack and Roy Manroe and
Charles Deaver, all of Lenox.

Forrest D Marsh of LaHarpe, Kan.,
died Sunday while attending church. He was a former resident of the Conway
vicinity
and a brother-in-law of Mrs E R Pennebaker.
Survivors include his widow, Eva, and two married sons, Charles of Lawrence,
Kan., Mendoel in California.
Dr and Mrs Pennebaker, Mrs Bob Basler, Mrs J A Dresher of Sharpsburg, Mr and Mrs Ira Pfander of
Creston planned to
attend the funeral Tuesday in LeHarpe.

Clearfield passed away April 28 at the St. Joseph Hospital, Denver, Colo. He was married to Zeta Culver. Survivors are his wife, Zeta, mother Mrs.
Mary Matthews, one brother, Wm. Matthews, Spencer, S. Dakota, 2 sisters, Mrs. Hazle Erwin and Mrs. Pearle Melroy of Seward, Alaska. Funeral services were
held in Denver, Colo.

daughter of Benjamin and Emma Jared was born Nov. 17, 1898 in Wayne County,
Ia., and departed this life June 12, 1956 at 5 o’clock pm at the Lutheran
Hospital in Omaha, Neb., after a short illness.
She was
united in marriage to H Spencer Peck May 18, 1918 at Kansas City, MO., and to
this union one son, Spencer J was
born March 19,
1921.
She leaves
to mourn, her devoted husband, H Spencer Peck; one son, Spencer J who is studying law
at the University
of Iowa; her
aged mother Emma E Jared of Corydon, who has made her home with her the past
winter and one sister, Lena Jared of Council Bluffs; also 8 nephews, ,Dean Jared, Max, William and Keith Morrow, all of
Seymour, la.; Harold Peck of Kansas City; Gene Peck of Corydon, la., and two
nieces, Ernestine Davis, Nevada, la and Katheryn Hagberg, Moline,
III.; one
sister-in-law, Floy Morsett,
Corydon and 2 brothers-in-law, R A Morrow Seymour and
Louis Peck of Corydon, la.
She was
preceded in death by her father in 1914 and her sister Etoile Morrow March 9, 1955.
At an early
age she united with the Christian church in Corydon and later transferred her
membership to the Presbyterian church in Sharpsburg,
where she has remained a faithful worker. She was a member of the Sharpsburg
Presbyterian
Women's
Association and of the Sharpsburg WCTU; also she was an active member of the
Conway Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, being a past Worthy Matron and a
Past Grand Representative of Wyoming.
The family moved to Sharpsburg in the spring of 1926 and except for a
few years have made their home here where
Spencer is
manager of the State Savings Bank.
She was a
devoted companion and mother and always ready to help others. She will be
greatly missed by her loved ones and her host of friends.

Henry
Peterson, 72, night watch and marshall here [Gravity]
suffered a heart attack at his home here about 10:30 a.m. Sunday. He leaves a
wife and one son, Bernard of Hampton. Another son passed away a few years ago. Mr and Mrs Peterson had recently
moved to a home which they had purchased here, after living in Bedford for a
number of years. He also had served several years as night watch there.

Mrs Frank Bush,
who has been spending the winter at the home of her daughter, Mr and Mrs Harry Grant of
Columbus,
Nebr., was called home this past week by the death of her
brother, Ed Stroud, 76 of Guss. Mr Stroud had been in ill health for several months, but death was unexpected at
this time. Funeral services were Wednesday afternoon at the Methodist Church in Guss with burial in Guss cemetery.

Little Danny
Wells, 3 and a half year old of St. Joseph, Mo. went with his father to put up
a grave tent. His father works for a
funeral home. The little boy climbed on
a large tombstone which fell off its base and crushed him. He died a short time later in a
hospital. The father is the cousin of
Mrs. Roy Leedom.
