Ball, Myrtle Houghton -

Mrs. Myrtle Ball, wife of Ott Ball, passed away March 20, her home at Sunset Beach, Calif.  Mrs. Ball was active at all her usual duties and death was the result of a heart attack. She was a native Californian.  Funeral services were held at the Miller Funeral Home in Downey, Calif.   Mrs. Ball is survived by her husband Ott a son and a daughter and four grand-children.  Also surviving is one sister and several nieces and nephews.  Mrs. Ball, with the help of her husband, had taken care of her father, Mr. Houghton for the past 6 years. Mr. Houghton preceded Mrs. Ball in death by just six weeks.

Bordner, Frank -

Frank Bordner, farmer living one mile west of town, [Gravity] passed away Thursday. He had been in poor health for several months. Funeral services were at the Methodist church in Gravity, Sunday afternoon. Burial at Fairview cemetery in Bedford.

Denton, Wayne A. -

Wayne A. Denton, son of Coleman and Mary Denton, was born on March 28th, 1893 in Oakland, Iowa and died at Medical Lake, Wash., April 8th, 1952 at the age of 59 years. The Denton family moved to Taylor county when Wayne was in his youth and he lived near Clearfield and Lenox until 1941 when he located in Washington.

 

He is survived by a daughter, Iris Fehrman of Sioux City and a son, Allen Denton of Medical Lake; also a brother, Earl Denton of Creston and two sisters, Flora Lyddon of Clearfield and Bernice Kerns of Creston; a step-daughter, Mildred Johnson of Medical Lake and a step-son Roy Simmons of Spokane, Wash.

 

Funeral) services and burial were in Medical Lake, April 10.

Hofmeister, George -

A son was born Tuesday, May 12th to Mr. and Mrs. G C Hofmeister but he died at birth in Mount Ayr at the Ringgold

County hospital. Name, George. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the J. R. Crew Funeral Home. The Rev

Leroy Cronkhite brought words of comfort to the bereaved. Besides the parents, are two sisters, Mary Ann and Georgia.

The grandparents, Mr. and Mrs W Hofmeister and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Nickle. Burial was in the Clearfield cemetery.

Bob Swan, our local editor, [Gravity] received word Sunday night of the death of his great-grandmother, Mrs. Fannie Kimpton, at the home of her daughter in San Bernardino, Calif. The body is being brought here and burial at the Guss cemetery.

Mrs. Lottie McColm passed away Friday morning after a lingering illness of over two years, having broken her hip

and from which she never fully recovered. Funeral services were Monday afternoon at the Christian Church. [Gravity]

Mercer, Bessie Curry -

Mrs. Bessie Curry Mercer, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus Curry of Clearfield, died Feb. 24 at a nursing home

in Afton at the age of 64 years. Mrs. Mercer spent many years in and near Clearfield, later moving to the Mt. Ayr vicinity.

 

She is survived by her husband, three sons, Edwin of Mt. Ayr, Cecil of Grand River and William, now stationed in Fort

Meade, Md., and three daughters. Elgin Bisby of Mt, Ayr, Marian Jeter of Beaconsfield and Nellie Snethen of Blockiton,

and also a brother, Harry Curry and a sister, Flossie Nickle of Clearfield. One daughter, Edna preceded the mother in death.

 

Funeral services were held at the Christian Church in Mt. Ayr and interment was in the Clearfield cemetery.

Mercer, Roy -

J. R. Crew was called Sunday to Blockton by the death of Roy Mercer. He is survived by his wife and a brother Erwin Mercer of Maloy. Last rites were held at the Platteville church with burial in the cemetery nearby.

Notice has been received of the death, June 18, of Elmer Moffett, 90, who had been at a nursing home in Bedford for

some time. He is survived by his wife, a son James of Oregon, and a daughter, Mrs. Maude Abels of Washington, and several grandchildren.

Moffett, D. Elmer -

D. Elmer Moffett son of George and Ann Mclntire Moffett, was born in Jefferson county, Iowa, April 26. 1862 and died June 18, 1952 at Bedford at the age of 90 years. He came to the vicinity of Clearfield in 1876.  On October 16, 1889, he was united in marriage to Olive Kendall of Pleasant Plains, Iowa  To this home came a son, James, now of Salem, Oregon, and a daughter, Maude Abels of Randel, Washington, who, besides his wife survive him; also seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren, besides other relatives and many friends.  He as preceded in death by brothers, John, Warren and Claude and a sister, Lottie..

 

Funeral services were held June 21 at the J. R. Crew Funeral Home; burial in the Clearfield cemetery.

Word has been received by Mrs. Tom Manroe of the death of her sister-in-law, Mrs. Mattie Nelson of Longview, Wash.  Mrs. Nelson at one time was a resident of Lenox.

Pine, Dollie Deweese -

Mrs. Dollie Pine, 74, died Wednesday at the Ringgold County Hospital in Mt. Ayr.  Mrs. Pine had often visited relatives in and near Clearfield.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a sister, Stella Deweese and a brother, Artie Deweese.  Surviving are her son, Ray Pine of Mt. Ayr, and a daughter, Mrs. Guy Reynolds of Clearfield, one sister, Mrs. Lucy Saylor of Conway, and one brother, Archie Deweese of Clearfield.  Funeral services were held in Rhodes Funeral Home in Mt Ayr with burial in Rose Hill cemetery.

Reed, G. F. –

Dr. G. F. Reed, father of the late Roe B. Reed, died Saturday at his home in Davis City.  He is survived by his wife and son, Shelbey Reed of San Francisco, one granddaughter, Patricia Reed of Philadelphia and Wiley Reed of Korea.  Funeral services were held on Wednesday and interment was in Davis City.  Dr. Reed was well known to many Clearfield people.

Shaffer, Clark D. -

Pfc. Clark D. Shaffer, 22, was killed in action March 12th in Korea. He was in the Infantry, and was a good friend of Jim

Maloney, who is a nephew of Miss Mary Maloney of near Lenox.  Pfc. Shaffer, Winston Tyler, who is now in service overseas, and Jim Maloney came home together several times, Erskine Blair bringing them by plane.  He was registered as a Taylor county boy and had worked in Corning at the time he entered service.  Surviving are his wife, Shirley, his mother Mrs. Homer Houck of Villisca and a number of brothers and sisters.

Smith, Mattie –

Mattie Smith, a former Clearfield resident died in Los Angeles, Calif. May 21st after an illness of many weeks.  She was the daughter of Eli and Margaret Smith.  She was a graduate of the Clearfield high school in 1900 and taught for a number of years.  She was also employed by H. Andrews in the Enterprise office.  Later she and her sister engaged in the mercantile business.  One brother, Clark Smith, survives.  She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Clyde, and a sister, Eva.  Funeral rites and burial were in California.

Stephens, Conner -

Conner Stephens, age 80 years died Saturday evening at his home eight miles south of Clearfield on March 22nd. He is survived by two sons, David of Blockton and Paul of Bedford and four daughters, Eurasian Judy of Blockton, Mary Bonebrake of Oskaloosa, Florence Dailey and Elma Wilkinson of Cheyenne, Wyo. His wife preceded him in death in 1950.

 

The remains were at the J. R. Crew funeral home in Clearfield until Tuesday when they were taken to the Methodist church in Blockton, where services were held. Interment was in the Blockton cemetery.

Swartwood, Roy -

On Monday morning, death came to Roy Swartwood, 75, at his home east of Clearfield. Roy had lived near Clearfield all of

his life and was well known by the people of the community He is survived by two sisters, Glea Bailey, Diagonal, and Luella of Kansas City and one brother Burr Swartwood, with whom he made his home; also nephews and nieces. Funeral services were held at the J. R. Crew Funeral Home Wednesday at 10:30 A. M. Burial was in the Bethel cemetery southeast of Clearfield.

Tindle, Lola G. Routh -

Lola Tindle, wife of Ralph Tindle, died at her home Tuesday, April 1st at the age of 59 years. She is survived by her

husband, Ralph, two sons, Jas. Tindle of Lorimor and Dr. Cletus Tindle of Osceola and one daughter, Mrs. Guy Nichols of

Los Angeles, Calf.; four brothers, Frank Routh of Lenox, Fred Routh of St. Petersburg, Fla., Bert and Glen Routh of

Clearfield and one sister, Mrs. Nettie Tindle of Clearfield.

 

Funeral services were held on Thursday at the Methodist :church in Clearfield with burial in the Clearfield cemetery.

Vanderbur, Vern F. -

On April 15th, following an evening of enjoyment at a father and son banquet in Clearfield Vern F. Vanderbur, 56, of Mapleton. Iowa, was seized with a heart attack and died within a few seconds. Accompanied by a son. Gene, they were guests of the Future Farmers of America instructor, Chas. Vanderbur, also a son of the deceased.

 

The surviving relatives are the wife and sons Gene of Mapleton and Charles Vanderbur and a daughter-in-law. Funeral services were held in Mapleton on Thursday, April 17th. The agriculture class of the Clearfield school drove to Mapleton to attend the services.

Whitworth, Charles -

Charles Whitworth 79, an uncle of Mrs. Earl Henderson of Greenfield, passed away April 25th in Osceola. Attending the

funeral services were Nobel Fearnot and Bill of Bedford, and Mr. and Mrs. Earl Henderson, Veryla and Susie Geneva of

Greenfield. Mrs. Dorcas Myers of Sanborn, Ind., one of the five sisters of the deceased who attended the services, remained

for a visit with her son, Mr Fearnot, and daughter, Mrs. Henderson.
