Arnold, Reuben Henry -
Reuben Henry Arnold, son of David Henry and Adaline Arnold, was born October 14, 1881, at Peoria, Ill,
and passed away at his home in Lenox, October 6, 1934, at the age of 52 years,
11 months and 22 days.
After his father's death, Reuben and his mother moved to
Lenox, Iowa, where he spent the greater part of his life. On December 24, 1912,
he was married
to Eva Winslow at Dodge City, Kansas. To them were born two children, one of whom
died in infancy. The other, Lorraine Ellen, now resides at Clinton, Iowa. He is
survived by his wife and daughter, a half sister, Mrs Chas. Hance of Creston, two uncles and several nieces
and nephews.
Mr. Arnold joined the Presbyterian church at Sharpsburg in early boyhood and then, not being fully satisfied, he rejoined
the Presbyterian church in
Dodge City, Kansas, where
he became an active worker. In 1915 he moved to
Colorado where he kept up his church work and paid tithes.
In 1930, because of poor health he was forced to move to
Lenox. Because of his health he was not able to attend church.
Funeral services were held at the Barber funeral home in
Lenox, Sunday, October 7, at 2:30, conducted by Rev. W. A. Thompson, pastor of
the United
Presbyterian church in Lenox.
Burial was made in the Fairview at Lenox.

Christy, Mary Huber -
Mrs. Mary Christy was born in Coal Valley, Ill., October 26,
1859. The early part of her life was spent near Coal Valley and at the age of
19 she was married to Wm. M. Christy and they located near Lenox where she has
since resided.
About 45 years ago she united with the Church of Christ at
Lenox, later transferring her membership to the Blue Grove church where she was
a faithful and earnest worker as long as her health permitted.
She served as president of the Ladies Aid Society, was
Sunday superintendent Superintendent of the Cradle
Roll Department, and was a teacher of the primary class for 14 years. She was a great lover of children and was
always happiest when doing some act of service for her children and friends.
About 18 months ago she was stricken with paralysis from
which she gradually grew weaker until she passed away at her home 7
miles southwest of Lenox early Thursday morning, August 9, 1934, at the age of
74 years, 10 months and 17 days.
She is survived by three children, Chas. Elrod Christy, Mame G. Hunter and Edw W., all of Lenox, one grand, one brother, B.
Huber, and many other distant relatives.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the Christian
Church in Lenox conducted by Rev. L. V. Freeman of Guthrie Center, former
pastor of the Lenox church.

Donaldson, David S. -
D. S.
Donaldson died at his home southeast of Lenox at about midnight Tuesday night
following an illness of one day.
Mr.
Donaldson had taken care of his usual chores Tuesday morning and had planned to
drive into Lenox to vote and to attend the Wells funeral, but after finishing
his work he felt ill and layed down to rest. He
steadily became worse until he died at about midnight.
Mr.
Donaldson was born m Glasgow, Scotland, September 1, 1864 and had lived in Iowa
since he was about 10 years old.
Funeral
services will be held Friday afternoon at the Methodist church at 2 o'clock in
charge of the Rev. F. L. Shepherd.

The infant
son born to Mr. and Mrs. Glen Douglas at the Greater Community hospital in
Creston, early Wednesday, October, passed away that city. The little one was laid to rest in the Blue
Grove cemetery Wednesday afternoon.

A message was received last Saturday by Mrs. Frank Wilt from
her cousin Hugh George of Kolin, Mont. telling of the
death of his mother, Mrs. A. L. George. Mr. and Mrs. George made their home
around Lenox a few years ago and many friends will remember them.

Goodale,
Cora -
Cora Goodale, daughter of Charles
and Loretta Goodale, was born at Kalamazoo, Michigan
November 9, 1859. With her family she came to Corning, Iowa where she resided
for many years. She resided at Lebanon, Missouri for two years, returning to
Iowa she settled with her sister, Miss Carrie Goodale,
in Lenox to make her home in the same town as their brother, Geo. L. Goodale, and his family. Ill health confined her to her
home but she was not confined to her bed until the last five days. She passed
away at 9:30 p. m. on Thursday evening, July 26 at the age of 74 years, 8
months and 17 days.
Funeral services were held a the Barber Funeral home
Saturday afternoon, July 28, conducted by Rev. F. L. Shepherd. Music was
furnished by Mrs. F
L. Shepherd, Mrs. Donald Dunbar and Miss Marcia Barber. After the services here her body was taken to
Corning and laid beside her mother and other relatives in the family lot there.

Nancy Eleanor Hammack Welliver -
Mrs. Robert Jeanes passed away at her home here [Clearfield] Wednesday
afternoon after a Illness of several months. Funeral services were held in the Christian
Church Saturday afternoon at 2:30. Rev. Phillip Nystrand officiating,
a quartet Mr.
and Mrs. J. Ralph Crew, Mrs. J. D. Barrans, and Don
Green singing.
Pall bearers
were: Gene Baxter, Elmer Nickles, Lennie Andrews U. S. Grant, Walter McKinstry, aad Ollie Stevensin; interment in
Clearfield Cemetery, Nancy Eleanor, daughter of Ephiriam and Ellen Hammack, was born in Mercer county,
Illinois, May 19th, 1858, and departed this life at her home in Clearfield Aug.
15th, 1934, aged 78 years, 2 mo. and 26 days. She grew to womanhood in Mercer county, and on November 16th, 1876 was united
hi marriage to
John Wendal Welliver and
they began their married life on a farm near North Henderson Illinois. In 1869
they moved to Alma, Nebr.
residing there until 1904 when they came to Clearfield, Iowa. Three children were born to this union,
Charley, Jessie and Myrtle, but sorrow came upon
the home,
Charley passing away at the age of six months, Jessie, at the age of three
years and Nellie, an adopted daughter,
at the age of five years. The husband died in 1905. On August 18th, she was united
in marriage to Robert Jeanes of Clearfield, where
they have since made their home. Mrs. Jeanes was a
member of the Christian church and lived a life of devotion to her savior, and
the church, especially enjoying her Bible School Class, the Loyal Women and
their activities. No one was more faithful to the work than she, untiring in
her efforts of love, she made life easier and happier
for all around her. She had been failing in health and strength for several
months, and her daughter Myrtle and her grand daughters , Thelma and Phyllis of Clarinda came often
to help
minister her. Mrs. Orn, a sister came Sunday from Mt.
Pleasant, Iowa. To cherish her memory are: her husband, her daughter, two grand
daughters four brothers, William Hammock of San Bernardino, California, Payne
and Notley Hammack of San
Diego, California, John Hammack of Wilton, North Dak., four sisters, Mrs. Mrs. Delia Long, Mary and Alice Hammack of Alhambra, California, and Mrs. Lydia Orn of Mount Pleasant, Iowa, and a number of nieces and
nephews, also the children and grand-chlldren of her
husband whom she dearly loved.

Maharry,
George M. -
Clippings
from Berkeley, Calif. newspapers tell something of the death of George M. Maharry, former Lenox resident who died at his home in that
city Oct. 16.
Mr. Maharry went to his office that morning in his usual health
but it is believed that the exertion of lifting an ice box onto the trunk rack
of his car
during the morning probably put an undue strain on his heart. He complained of feeling weak and his
brother, J. A. Maharry took him home. A few minutes later he lapsed into
unconsciousness and the fire department inhalator crew and a physician were
called. They were unable to revive him.
Mr. Maharry had lived in Berkley since 1924. Four years ago he
and his brother bought the Rush Real Estate Co. and had since operated it as
sole
owners.
Mr. Maharry was born in Adams county, Iowa, in 1882. Since
moving to Berkley he had been prominent in the United Presbyterian church in
Oakland, and served as trustee and treasurer.
He is
survived by his wife and brother of Berkeley; his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Maharry in Rock Island, Ill., three sisters and a brother,
Mrs. Frank Bell of
Lockford, Ill; Mrs. Pearl
Hofer of Rock Island, Ill.; Mrs. Ethel Bricker of Lenox and Ralph Maharry of Rock Island.

Mrs. H. C.
Reynolds, who had been ill for some time, passed away at her home in Lenox at
six o'clock Wednesday morning Nov. 14. Funeral services will
be held Friday
afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church and will be in charge of Rev.
F.L. Shepherd.

Reynolds, Cornettie Susan Collins -
Cornettie Susan Collins, daughter of Thomas and Ellen Collins, was born April 26, 1867 in
DeWitt, county Illinois and died at her home in Lenox, Iowa, November 14, 1934,
at the age of 67 years, 6 months and 18 days.
On November
26, 1890 she was united in marriage to Henry Chauncey Reynolds. To this union
seven children were born: Henry Claude of Lenox; Clarence Guy of Clearfield,
Dennis Ray of Sheldon, Wisconsin; Sidney
Pearl; Amelia Irene Jordon and Ida May Crabtree, all of Lenox. Charles Amon passed away December 16, 1913 at the age of 13 years.
In Sept.
1915 the family moved from Leroy, Illinois, to a farm near Lenox, where they
resided until 1920, when they moved into Lenox, where they have since resided.
At an early
age she united with the Methodist Episcopal church at
Parnell, Illinois and later transferred her membership to the Lenox Methodist
church where she remained a faithful member and attendee of services until failing
health prevented.
She was a
charter member of the Lenox unit of the American Legion Auxiliary. She always
retained her membership and was greatly interested in the work
of the
organization.
Besides her
husband and children she is survived by three sisters: Mrs. Mary Johnston, Mrs.
Minnie Thompson and Mrs. Ollie Brown, all of Parnell Illinois and one brother
Bert W. Collins of Marion, Ohio. Two brothers and one sister, Curtis, Noah, and
Delia Collins preceded her in death. There are also
eighteen grandchildren and a host of other relatives.
She was a
kind and loving mother, a patient sufferer and will be greatly missed by all
who knew her.
Funeral
services were held in the Methodist church Friday afternoon,
November 16 at
2 o’clock in charge of her pastor Rev. F. L. Shepherd, assisted
by Rev. J. C.
Turner of Clearfield. Interment was in
the Lenox Fairview cemetery. Pallbearers were Lester Johnson Perry Gray, Wm.
Severn, Alfred Caven, Chris Trost, Carmon
Alexander.
Music was
furnished by a quartet composed of Mrs. W. H. Madden, Mrs. F.
L. Shepherd, Marvin Fleming and Lee Caskey, with Mrs. A. H. Peacock at the piano.

Scroggie,
Burl -
Burl Scroggie 46—for years a resident of Conway and Community
fatally shot himself with a rifle at his home in Conway early Saturday morning.
After hearing the shots behind closed doors the family summoned aid and when
his critical condition was found it was decided to take him to Iowa City and he
died just before 4 o'clock Sat. P. M. just before reaching Iowa City without
ever regaining consciousness. Poor
health and despondency is thought caused the
act. He leaves
a wife, two sons and two daughters; beside his aged mother, brother and sisters
to mourn his departure.
Funeral
services were held at Conway Church Tuesday afternoon and burial made at
Platteville cemetery.

Mrs. Frank
Severn died at her home here Tuesday, September 25, at the age of 65 years, 3
months. She was born June 25, 1869. Funeral services will be held Thursday
afternoon at 2:30 at the Church of Christ and will be conducted by Rev. L. V.
Freeman of Guthrie Center, a former pastor of the local church. Interment will
be in Fairview cemetery.

Severn, Mary
Lucinda Burrell –
Mary Lucinda
Burrell, daughter of Lurita and Washington Burrell,
was born June 25, 1869, in Taylor county, Iowa. She
departed this life Sept. 25, 1934,
aged 65 years, 3
months.
She was married
to Francis M Severn February 14, 1884 and to them were born five children. With the exception of a few years spent in Nebraska, Mrs.
Severn spent
her entire life in Taylor county. At an early age she
joined the Blue Grove Christian church of which she remained a member until her
death.
She is survived by her husband, three children, Will and
Alpha Severn and Mayme Kilby,
all of Lenox; 18 grandchildren, one sister, Dora Schmitt of Des Moines, and one
brother, Fred Burrell of Fraser, Colo.. One daughter died in infancy and one son,
Elmer, passed away in 1916 at the age of 31 years.
Mrs Severn was a kind and loving wife and mother and was a thoughtful friend and
neighbor and she will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon, September27
at the Church of Christ and were conducted by Rev. L. V. Freeman of Guthrie
Center a former Lenox pastor. Burial was made in the Fairview cemetery.

Toland, Enos Riley

Enos Riley, son
of William and Eliza Toland was born August 20, 1855
near Industry, McDonough county, Ill., where he grew
to manhood, and passed away October 20, 1934 at 2:25 a. m.
He was one
of a family of ten children: four sisters and one brother have preceded him in
death, also three half brothers, his mother and father. The living brothers are
Steve Toland of Kent, Iowa, Milton of Rushville,
Ill., Ingram of Industry, Ill., and one sister, Mrs. George Sharps of Industry,
Ill.
When a young
man he went to Missouri where he was married to Josephine Sanders, February 27,
1876. To them were born ten children: Bertha and
Earl who
died in infancy; Walter J. of Des Monies; Huldah Pearson of Lenox; Willie R. of Industry, Ill., Branch W, of Lenox; Jesse E. of
Kansas City. Mo.,
Leslie V. of Lenox; Verne B. of Carson, Iowa and Ruth Moore of
Lenox. There are
also 13 grandchildren and five great grandchildren, who with his wife survive
him.
Many years
ago he united with the Calvary Methodist church where he remained a faithful
member.
Though he
suffered so greatly, yet he was always patient, and always had a kind welcome
for everyone, and appreciated everything that was done for him, knowing for a
long time that he must leave his family and pass on, yet he never murmured nor
complained—but often expressed a desire to go.
Funeral
services were held at the Lenox Methodist church on Monday, October 22, at 2
o'clock in charge of the pastor, Rev. F. L. Shepherd. A quartette composed of
Mrs. Alice Dunbar, Mrs. F. L. Shepherd, Mr. O. P. Arnold and Dr. W. H. Cash
sang favorite hymns. Burial was in the
Morgan cemetery.

Trost,
Margaret Stanger -
Margaret
Stanger was born on December 8, 1870, in Dettingen,
Germany, and passed away at the Greater Community hospital in Creston,
September 28, 1934 at the age of 63 years, 9 months and 20 days.
She was the
daughter of Daniel and Marie Agnes Stanger. Her parents, three sisters and one brother proceeded her in death.
She was
married Nov. 3, 1891, to George Trost, who together
with eight children, survive her. One child died in infancy. The surviving
children are Mary Cook and Freda Boltinghouse of
Lenox, Pauline Morgan, Rosa
Noerrlinger and Emma Woods of Sheldon, Wisc., Joseph Carl Trost and George
Harvey Trost of Lenox and Harry Howard Trost of Des Moines. She is also
survived by one brother, Daniel Stanger of Lenox, and by 15 grandchildren.
At the age
of 14 Mrs. Trost was united with the German Lutheran
church in Dettingen, Germany, and in later years with
the First Presbyterian church in Lenox, in which vicinity she has made her home
for the past 32 years.
Mrs. Trost was a devoted wife and a loving mother, always
thinking first of others and was a true friend to all who knew her.
Funeral
services were held Sunday, September 30. at the
Presbyterian church in Lenox and were conducted by Rev. F. C. McCallon, a former pastor of the local church. Interment was made in Fairview cemetery.

Wells, Elza Lorraine “Zeke” -
Elza L. Wells, partner in the Copeland-Wells produce
house, died suddenly Saturday night about 10:30 after an illness of less than
three hours. He had
gone to the
produce house about 7 o'clock and shortly afterward became ill. He was taken to
his home where he did not regain consciousness and died about 10:30.
Elza Lorraine
Wells was born at Leroy, Iowa, March 28, 1884, and died at his home in Lenox
Nov. 3, 1934, at the age of 50 years 7 months and 6 days.
He lived
with his parents on a farm near Leroy but later moved to Derby, Iowa, where he
grew to manhood. On Nov. 29, 1906, he was married to Miss
Maud Hazle. They resided for a few years at Redding and Diagonal moving to Lenox in 1912 where they have since
resided.
Mr. Wells
was engaged in the restaurant business for some years and also in the garage
work. About 14 years ago he became associated with O. L. Copeland in the
Copeland-Wells firm in which he continued as a partner until his death.
Besides his
widow, he is survived by one brother, Clinton Wells of Des Moines and numerous
other more distant relatives.
Mr. Wells
united with the Lenox Methodist church in 1913 during the pastorate of Rev.
Walter Morgan. He was a member of Tremont Lodge, A. F. & A. M. of Lenox; of
the Chapter of Royal Arch Masons at Corning; of the Commandery Knight Templers at Creston; Za Ga Zig Shrine at Des Moines; the Modern Woodmen.
He was also
a member of the Order of Eastern Star in which order he had presided as Worthy
Patron.
Mr Wells, or
"Zeke" as he was affectionately called throughout the community, was
always prominently identified with every worthwhile community enterprise. He had boundless enthusiasm and energy and
while he did not hesitate to say what was on his mind if he disapproved of what
was being done, he had a way of expressing displeasure and yet retaining
friendship.
Funeral
services were held at the Arnold funeral home Tuesday Nov. 6, at 1:30, in
charge of the Rev. F. L. Shepherd of the Methodist church. Music was
furnished by Mrs. K. R. Huff, Mrs. John Porter and
W. C. Lewis. Burial was made in the Lenox cemetery and the service at the grave
was in charge of
the Masonic
fraternity. Pall bearers were employees
at the Copeland-Wells plant and were Everett Kennedy, George Larimer, Floyd
Dahlberg, E. Hurley, Ivan Carey, Vern Harvey.

Wurster, Fredericke Lieb –
Fredericke Lieb, daughter of Jacob Lieb and Anna Weible, was born March 12, 1874 in Dettingen, Germany, and died at her home near Clearfield, Iowa
November 27th, 1934, at the age of 60 years, 8 months, and 15
days.
On January
21, 1897, she was united in marriage to William Wurster,
and shortly thereafter came to America to live on a farm near Lenox, Iowa. To this union were born nine children. Albert, Carl and Alice died in infancy and
Frank at the age of twelve years. Those to survive are: John Jacob and Walter
George of near Lenox, Herman Adam and George Frederick of near
Clearfield and Anna Marie Brady of Des Moines.
At the age
of fourteen years she united with the Lutheran church in Germany. In her life
she exerted a quiet Christian influence; in the community she was a friend, in
the home she was ever faithful as a loving wife and mother. "Her children
rise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he pralseth her."
Besides her
husband, children and four grand-children, she is survived by a brother and
sister in Germany, a brother in Nebraska and a host of friends.
Funeral
services were held in the United Presbyterian church of Clearfield, Thursday,
November 29th, 1934 at 1:00 p. m. in charge of the pastor, Rev. H.
B. Hutchman. Interment was in the Lenox Fairview cemetery. A
quartette composed of Ralph Crew, Mrs. J. M Stephenson, Miss Myrta Young, and E. C. Heaton sang, Miss Mary Swan
being accompanist. Song sung were “Rock of Ages” and “Psalms 23”. Scripture readings were the 23rd Psalm, 1
Corinthians
15-58; Psalm 90, and the sermon text Isaiah 68:13.
