Anderson, Minnie -
L. B. Anderson received word Monday of the death of his
sister, Minnie Anderson, which had occurred the day before at her home in Los
Angeles, Funeral services were held Wednesday.
Mr. Anderson visited with his sister while on a western trip
last summer and that was the first time he had seen her in twenty-two years.

George Beach
Jr., died at St. Joseph's hospital in St. Joseph, Mo., early Tuesday. He had
been in St. Joseph for several days at the home of his daughter while
taking treatment at the hospital but a few days before his death he was taken to the
hospital. Heart disease was given as the cause of his death.
Funeral
services will be held Saturday morning at 10 o'clock at St. Patrick's church in
Lenox, in charge of the Rev. McStay.

Funeral
services for George H. Beach were held Friday morning at St. Patrick's church,
conducted by the Rev. P. J. McStay. Burial was made
in the Lenox cemetery.
Obituary
George
Harding Beach was born in Monmouth, Ill., March 24, 1877. He was the son of
Luella E. and George S. Beach. When about two years of age he came
to Lenox, la.,
with his parents and spent most of his life in this community. He attended the
Lenox High school and later the Capital City Commercial College
at Des Moines.
On June 7,
1899, he was married to Kathleen O'Beirn, who
survives him. At this time he became a member of the Catholic church. To Mr. and Mrs. Beach
were born nine
children, all of whom survive. They are Mrs. Bertille Wilson of Long Island,N. Y., Dee H. of Indio, Calif.,
Herbert G. of Spokane, Wash., Howard S. of Indio, Calif., Mrs. Dorothea Walter
of Quincy, Ill.. John D. of Blackfoot, Idaho; Mrs. Mildred Cummings of St.
Joseph, Mo. and Mrs. Helen Benson of
Hollywood, Calif., and Mrs. Gertrude Van Houten of Long Beach, Calif.
After a
brief illness, George passed away very peacefully on Feb. 8, 1938, at the St.
Joseph hospital in St. Joseph, Mo. Mrs. Beach and Mildred were at his
bedside.
George was
well known throughout the community and had a host of friends — his friends
being numbered by his acquaintances. He was a kind and devoted husband and
father always having a smile and an encouraging word for everyone.
Besides his
wife and children he is survived by three grandchildren, Patricia Ann Benson,
Jay Dee Beach and Sharon Kay Van Houten, an aged father,
George S.
Beach; four sisters, Mrs. Nellie Hetz of Lenox, Mrs.
Edna Lovell of San Bernardino Calif., Mrs. Effie Jacoby of Lee's Summit, Mo.,
and Mrs. Luella
Cottrell, of Lenox, and one brother, Clifford S. Beach of
Sharpsburg.

Creswell, 62, brother of Byron Cresswell of Lenox
died Tuesday morning at I0:45 at his home in Corning. Funeral services will be
held at the Boyd Roland funeral home in Corning, Thursday afternoon at 2
o'clock,
conducted by the Rev. J. H. Krenmyre. Burial will be made in
the Lenox cemetery.

Cresswell, Hugh M. –

Press: While the general public was aware of the delicate health of Hugh M Cresswell, yet the news of his critical illness and
subsequent death was a shock, because he had seemed better than usual this
winter. Thursday morning he was taken ill with a sudden attack of what was
believed to be pleurisy and Friday a lung collapse revealed the seriousness of
his condition. He grew steadily worse until Tuesday when death relieved him of
his
sufferings.
Hugh M, Cresswell, son of Frank and Emma Cresswell was born in Adams County, Jan. 19, 1876 and died Feb. 22, 1938, at his home in
northwest Corning at 10:45 a. m., aged 62 years, 1 month and 3 days. Mr. Cresswell
had been
handicapped since early manhood because of an injury, but his excellent mind
had triumphed over physical handicaps and he had made for himself a place in a
community which respected him for his courage and fine character.
He received
his early education in the Adams county schools and later attended Highland
Park college in Des Moines where he took a business
course specializing in bookkeeping. He was employed by various firms
and from 1908
until he moved to Corning a few years ago, he served as secretary of the school
board in Grant township and as township clerk from 1915. Thus he indicated his
ability in his chosen line of work, and the
confidence reposed in him by those he served.
He was
married to Donna Gibson in Kansas City, March 23, 1910 and to this union three
children were born, Phillip, Robert and Martha, all whom survive.
He is also
survived by a brother, Byron Cresswell, of Lenox.
Funeral
services will be held Thursday afternoon at, 2:30 o'clock at the Boyd Roland
funeral home conducted by the Rev. J. H. Krenmyre and
burial was made in the Lenox cemetery.

Cunningham, C. W. -
Dr. C. W.
Cunningham, 38 Boone, la., dentist, was killed late
Monday when the car in which he was riding crashed into an interurban freight
train at
Webster
City, la. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
Dr.
Cunningham was a son of the Cunningham family that lived in Lenox many years
ago and his father is buried here. The body of Dr. Cunningham was
brought to Lenox Wednesday afternoon and burial was made beside his father. The Masonic
fraternity had charge of the services at the grave.
Dr.
Cunningham was a nephew of the late Mrs. Frank Manroe.

Jimmy Joe -
Jimmy Joe, 4
months old son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Eberle, died early
Thursday morning, Feb. 3. Cause of his death was thought to be enteritis. The
baby was in good health when it was put to bed the night before but when Mrs. Eberle went to the bed to feed it at 7 o'clock the baby was
dead.
Funeral
services were held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home and burial was
made in the Lenox cemetery.

Gordon, Ralph T. –
Ralph T.
Gordon, son of R. E. and May Gordon, was born near Sharpsburg, la., February 10, 1907, and died February 19, 1938, at the
age of 31 years and 9 days.
He received
his high school education in Los Angeles and attended a business college in
Colorado Springs, Colo. Since the death of his brother Harry in 1924, Ralph has
never been strong but was ever cheerful and always said he considered himself
lucky because he had friends in three states, Iowa,
California and Colorado.
He is
survived by his parents. Funeral services were held at Los Angeles and
interment was made there in Rosedale cemetery.

Jamison, Jennie –
Mrs. Jennie Jamison, former resident of Clearfield,
but for the past few years had made her home with her children Tom, at Redding,
and Mrs. Alta Hawk, at
Creston, passed away at the home of her son, Friday, February 4. She had been in failing
health for some time and this would not permit her to live in her own home in
Clearfield.
Mrs. Jamison
was well advanced in years, being in her eighties. She had been a resident of
Taylor county for a good number of years.

Kelley, Michael J. –
Michael J.
Kelley, a brother-in-law of James Quinn of Lenox, died Friday, February 25, at
his home near Leon. He was born January 18, 1856 at Freeport, Ill., and for a
number of years lived in Grove township, near
Lenox, before moving to Leon. Mrs. Kelley died about two years ago. He is
survived by four sons, three of whom are at home and one is living in
Burlington.
Funeral
services were held from St. Brendan's church at Leon, Monday morning, Feb. 28
at 8:30, in charge of the Rev. E. J. Schuman. Burial was made in Calvary
cemetery at Creston.

Fern Short -
Gladys Fern
Short, eldest daughter of John and Floy Short, was
born March 27, 1898, on the old Short homestead, near Conway Crossing now known
as Merle Junction. She died February 9, 1938, at the age of thirty-nine years,
10 months
and 12 days.
Her entire
life was spent in the vicinity of Clearfield, except the past two years when she
lived on a farm near Kent.
In the year
1915 she united with the Calvary M. E. church and on Dec. 6, 1916, she was
united in marriage to Wilbert B. Long. Soon after her marriage she
transferred her church membership to the United Presbyterian church of Clearfield.
She is
survived by her husband and two sons, Leroy and Darrell, also by her father,
mother and two sisters, Mrs. Sylvia Beck of Lenox, and Mrs. Delpha
Bell of Carlisle. She was preceded in death by an infant son about seven years ago.
Her most
outstanding characteristic was a sunny disposition and a sweet thoughtfulness
for the welfare of others, and a desire to be helpful wherever and whenever she
could. Her patience during her last illness was remarkable.
Funeral
services were held at the United Presbyterian church in Clearfield, Friday
afternoon, at 2 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. Mr. McKinsey, pastor of
the Methodist
church. Cousins served as pall bearers. Burial was made in the Clearfield
cemetery.

McArthur, Anna Russell -
Anna Russell
was born in Ursa, Ill., May 5, 1876, and died,
following an operation at the St. Joseph Methodist hospital, Jan. 4, 1938, aged
61 years, 8 months. She grew to womanhood in Illinois and received her
education
in the grade
school of that state.
On January
5, 1900, she was married to Daniel Marion McArthur and to them were born ten children, four of whom died in infancy. Mr.
McArthur followed railroading practically all his life and accordingly the
family has lived in many
towns. They lived
in Stillwater, Ill., West Point, Ill., and spent 9 years at Mt. Union, la., and the past 17 years at Sharpsburg. In December, 1937, the family moved to
Gravity with the intention of becoming residents of that town.
Mrs.
McArthur never joined any lodge or church but often attended and worked with
the Methodist church at Sharpsburg. She was a faithful wife and good mother.
She is
survived by her husband and son, Rex, of Gravity, Russell McArthur, Mrs. Hazel
Dunbar and Mrs. Marie Paterson of Rockford, Ill., Clyde McArthur and Ray
McArthur of Tacoma, Wash.
Funeral
services were held Thursday, Jan. 6, at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church in
Gravity. Pall bearers and singers were chosen from Sharpsburg
friends of the family. Burial was made at Rockford.

Funeral
services for Mrs. Mary Margaret Moore were held Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 15,
1938 at the Fair View Christian church, conducted by the Rev. O. C. Huff, of
Oakland, Iowa.
Obituary
Mary
Margaret Mahr was born in Fulton County, Illinois,
June 12, 1880, and passed away in Lenox, Iowa, on February 11, 1938, at the age
of 57 years, 7
months,
29 days. She was the daughter of Philip and Mary Mahr.
At the age of
3 years, she
moved with her parents to a farm near Brooks, la. There she spent her girlhood
days. She was converted at the age of 13 and united with the
Methodist church at Ivyville. Later she became a member of the Fair View Christian church where she
held her membership at the time of her death.
She was
married to Bert Moore and to them were born four sons, Harold E., Nodaway,
Iowa; Merle P., Conway, Carl B., Corning; and Wayne W., of Lenox, all of whom
are living, and were present at the time of her going. Her husband preceded her in death on
September 28, 1935.
Besides her
children, she leaves 7 grandchildren; 2 brothers; George Mahr,
of Indianola and John Mahr of Corning, Iowa, 3
daughter-in-laws, Mrs. Harold
Moore, Mrs.
Carl Moore and Mrs Merle Moore; and 4 half-brothers,
Henry Reihm, McComb, Ill.;
Charles Reihm, Canton, Ill.; Frank Reihm, London Mills, Ill.; and Charles Reihm,
Avon, Ill. She also had a half-sister, Mrs. Chas. Alpaugh,
who is deceased.
Her mother
passed away May 7, 1921, and her father, December 14, 1923.
A few years
after the death of her husband, she moved away from the farm home, where they
had had lived most of their married life and located at
Corning, where she remained for about 5 years.
In 1934, she
moved to Lenox, This was her home at the time of her departure.
She was a
wonderful mother. Mrs.
Moore, known to many of her friends as well as her relatives as "Aunt
Mae" had a pleasing personality, and a kind and most generous disposition. She was a good neighbor, always ready to help in time of need and her death
will leave many without a friendship which they valued highly.

L. P. Nelson,
who lived south of Clearfield, passed away Friday, February 4th about noon. Mr.
Nelson had not been well for some time and his death was
not unexpected.
Mr. Nelson's wife died about four weeks ago. The family has the sympathy of the
entire community.

City, Saturday February 19, and died the same day. The body was brought to

Pugh died Tuesday afternoon at the county home where he had been taken just a
few days before. His death was due to
apoplexy. He was born June 19, 1869.

Graham received word the first of the week of the death of Miss Margaret Scroggs which occurred in Los Angeles, Calif., on March 3.
No further
particulars were received except that as soon as the flood out subsides the body will be shipped
to Lenox for burial.
Miss Scroggs was formerly a teacher in the Lenox schools and
also taught for many years at Hutchinson, Kansas.

Mrs. E. R.
Stroud, wife of the pastor of the Methodist church at Redfield, and formerly of
Lenox, died January 15, at Redfield. Funeral services were held
Tuesday,
January 18, at the church and the body was then taken to Red Oak for burial.
The services were in charge of four ministers. Rev. C. Hohanshelt of
Waukee, read the scriptures; Dr. H. C. Edwards of Perry gave a prayer; Rev. W. G.
Warren of Adel read the obituary and Rev. M. R. Talley of Winterset gave
the sermon.
Obituary
Sadie Mary,
daughter of the late William and Frances Jones was born in Lawrence, Kan,, April 20, 1880, and died January 15, 1938.
She was
educated in the public schools of Kansas and later taught for several terms.
On November
12, 1902, she was married to Fred C. Bates of Williamstown Kans., and to them was born
one daughter, now Mrs. Marion Spicer of Council Bluffs. Mr. Bates died in 1913.
On March 19,
1919, she was married to Evan R. Stroud, then pastor at Pleasantville, la. To
them two sons were born, Charles and Robert, There are
two step-daughters,
Mrs. Alice Dunbar of Lenox and Mrs. Virginia Swallow of Des Moines. Two
grandchildren also survive. Jimmy and Dotty Ri Swallow.
Besides the
husband and the children named above, Mrs. Stroud is survived by three sisters
and two brothers, Mrs G. R. Shultz, Mrs. Chas.
Husted, Mrs. Chester Spray and Chas. M.
Jones, all of Lawrence, Kans. and J. W. Jones of Fowler, Colo.
Mrs. Stroud
was a faithful helpmate to her husband and had served churches with him at
Pleasantville, Carson, Red Oak circuit, Lenox,
Farragut and Redfield. She found her greatest joy in her work in the church
school, but never neglected work in the Ladies' Aid, the Missionary Society or
other
organizations of the church.
She was a
member of Salome Chapter No. 264, Order of the Eastern Star in Lenox .and of
the Redfield Women's Club.

Elizabeth Pierce –
Elizabeth
Pierce Toland was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, November
11, 1852, and died at the family home in Kent, March 3, 1938, at the age of 85
years, 3 months and 22 days.
More than
forty years ago she united with the Christian church at Union City, in which
denomination she was an active member, and in that faith she remained steadfast
to the end.
On October
10, 1872, she was married to Stephen Toland, who
preceded her in death three years ago. To them were born six children, three
son and three
daughters—Charles
F. Toland, deceased, Mrs. John Peak, Mrs. L. C.
Bowers and Earl R. Toland, all of Kent; Albert Toland of Glendale, Calif.; and Mrs. F. C.
Locke, of Creston.
In 1878 she
came to Union county, where she has since resided continuously
— save for one year in Nebraska,
until her death, the last 37 years having
been spent in
the present family home in Kent. In this home for more than a quarter of a
century the Toland family and their descendants have
gathered each year for their Christmas reunion.
In addition
to her sons and daughters, there are 16 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren
together with untold numbers of friends she has gathered about her throughout
the years. She is also survived by one
sister, Josephine Pierce and one brother, Albert Pierce, both of Bushnell, Ill.
Funeral
services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:00 at the home in Kent, conducted by
Rev. E. F. Hagee of Lenox.

Uehling,
Joseph George -
Joe Uehling, 55, died at his home near Lenox Tuesday evening
about 8 o'clock. Mr. Uehling had been feeling as well
as usual and after supper was sitting in a chair reading a paper when his death
occurred. Heart disease was thought to be the cause of his death.
Mr. Uehling is survived by his wife and eleven children.
Funeral
services will be held at the Barber Funeral Home Friday morning and burial will
be made that afternoon at Hooper, Nebr.

Joseph
George Uehling was born Oct. 23, 1882 in Hooper,
Nebr., and died very suddenly at his home near Lenox March 1, 1938 at the age
of 55 years, 4 months and 6 days.
At the age
of 25 he was married to Bertha Augusta [Latri?] on
December 13, 1907. To them were born
eleven children, Mrs. Ronald Hollinger, Delmar Uehling and Leland Uehling, all of Chehalls,
Wash., Mrs. Owen Schaffroth, Corning, Mrs. Bernard
Miller, Prescott, Ernest, Marie, IrmaJean, Joseph,
Ellen and Mable, all of Lenox. In
addition there are five grandchildren.
He is also
survived by six sisters and two brothers, all of whom live in Nebraska.
At the age
of 23 Mr. Uehling moved from Hooper to Elizabeth,
Nebr. where he engaged in ranching until 1930 when the family moved to Iowa
where he lived until his death. He was a
most loving and kind father and was also a willing and helpful neighbor and
friend.
Services
were held at the Barber Funeral home Friday morning and the body was taken to
Hooper, Nebr. for burial that afternoon.
